Minnesota Shooter Wrote Letter Claiming Tim Walz Told Him to Kill Amy Klobuchar

by admin June 21, 2025

Vance Boelter, the man accused of killing a member of the Minnesota legislature and her husband, and severely injuring another Democratic legislator and his wife, was a prepper who told his family to flee to neighboring Wisconsin if anything bad happened, according to a new report from the Star Tribune. The alleged killer even claimed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz instructed him to kill Sen. Amy Klobuchar in a letter the newspaper described as “rambling and conspiratorial.”

The letter is described as 1.5 pages long and “incoherent,” claiming that Boelter was secretly trained by the U.S. military “off the books.” The letter was found in Boelter’s car, according to the Star Tribune, and says that Walz wanted Klobuchar killed so that the governor could run for senate, something he’s expressed no desire to do. There’s no evidence anything in the letter is true, but that hasn’t stopped conspiracy theorists on X from insisting it’s evidence that Boelter is actually left wing.

The 57-year-old Boelter allegedly killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband in the early morning hours of June 14 disguised as a police officer. Boelter wore a mask and repeatedly shouted “This is the police. Open the door,” after arriving at the home around 2:00 a.m. local time. After killing Hortman and her husband he moved on to the home of state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. Police first thought Boelter was a fellow officer when they arrived but figured it out and exchanged gunfire, according to court documents.

Boelter’s apparent desire to be prepared for extremist scenarios shows up repeatedly in the unsealed court documents. A police search of Boelter’s car found “semi-automatic, assault-style rifles, as well as a large quantity of ammunition organized into loaded magazines,” along with wound treatment supplies and eye masks for sleeping.

Boelter, who harbored far-right extremist views on everything from abortion to LGBT rights, allegedly told his family about a “bailout plan” if anything happened, according to the Star Tribune, which his wife may have followed. Police used cellphone tracking to determine the location of Boelter’s wife later in the morning of June 14 and found her at 6:18 a.m., according to court documents. She was pulled over and consented to a search of her phone, which revealed that she and others in the family received a text that read, “Dad went to war last night… I don’t wanna say more because I don’t wanna implicate anybody.”

Boelter apparently told his family to leave their house because he was afraid police would come looking. Another text to his family read: “Words are not gonna explain how sorry I am for this situation… there’s gonna be some people coming to the house armed and trigger-happy and I don’t want you guys around.”

Police found two handguns in the car of Boelter’s wife along with about $10,000 in cash, according to the documents. Her passport and passports for her children were also in the car.

In one of the most interesting details from the case, Boelter allegedly used data broker websites that compile information on private citizens to figure out where to find his targets. The list of targets included dozens of people. According to the court filing, the websites Boelter listed in a notebook included:

  • Truepeoplesearch
  • Spokeo
  • Pipl
  • Peoplefinders
  • Beenverified
  • Whitepages
  • Truthfinder
  • Intelius
  • Ownerly
  • USsearch
  • Peoplelooker

Boelter faces faces six federal charges for the shooting and local prosecutors have said they plan to pursue a first-degree murder charge against the man. There was an outcry on social media after it was revealed Hennepin County prosecutors had only filed second degree murder charges but first degree murder can only be brought in Minnesota after evidence is presented to a grand jury.

The Minnesota Shooting Suspect’s Background Suggests Deep Ties to Christian Nationalism

by admin June 19, 2025

The alleged shooter also said in one of the sermons, “God is going to raise up apostles and prophets in America.” It’s that language in particular, experts tell WIRED, that connects him to the world of charismatic Christianity.

“Everything that I’ve seen indicates that he’s charismatic,” says Matthew Taylor, senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Baltimore and author of The Violent Take It by Force: The Christian Movement That Is Threatening Our Democracy. “The supernatural, talking about the gifts of the holy spirit, while using a very pentecostal style of discourse in his preaching.”

Abortion in the independent charismatic Christian movement is often characterized as a demonic practice. Police say the car that the alleged shooter abandoned contained a lengthy hit list of Democratic lawmakers, abortion providers, and outspoken abortion advocates in the state. Charismatic Christians often talk about abortion in terms of “child sacrifice to demons,” says Taylor.

“I don’t think it’s hard to see how someone could get radicalized around that language,” he alleges.

The alleged shooter’s now-deleted Facebook profile also showed that he had “liked” a page for the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative legal advocacy organization known for its hardline stances against abortion and LGBTQ rights. “This signals at least a right-wing anti-abortion conviction,” says Taylor.

David Carlson, who has known the alleged shooter since fourth grade and described the 57-year-old as his best friend, told reporters that the alleged shooter was a Trump supporter, “very conservative,” and would be offended if anyone suggested otherwise. (In the aftermath of the shooting, however, far-right influencers, including people like Elon Musk, sought to blame leftists and the Deep State.)

It’s likely, according to Taylor, that the alleged shooter’s theological ideas were rooted in his time at the Christ for the Nations Institute, a charismatic Bible college in Dallas, Texas, he claimed to spend some time at, according to a biography on the archived Revoformation website. Taylor claims that a number of prominent figures in the independent charismatic Christian movement have deep ties to or attended the institute.

Dutch Sheets, an NAR pastor who popularized the “Appeal to Heaven” flag waved by Christian nationalists and rioters at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, graduated from the institute in 1978 and worked as an adjunct professor there in the late 1980s and early 1990s; he later briefly returned as an instructor in 2012. Cindy Jacobs, an avid supporter of Trump who has been described as one of the most influential prophets in America, settled in Dallas in the 1980s, and according to Taylor, was regularly on the institute’s campus lecturing or guest-teaching. The suspected shooter was enrolled at the Institute from 1988 to 1990, which means he could have overlapped with some of those figures.

When WIRED contacted the Institute, they directed our query to a statement saying it “unequivocally rejects, denounces, and condemns any and all forms of violence and extremism, be it politically, racially, religiously or otherwise motivated.” The statement also said that they were “aghast and horrified” that an alumnus of an Institute was a suspect in the Minnesota shootings. “This is not who we are. This is not what we teach.” Jacobs and Sheets did not respond to requests for comment.

Minnesota Shooting Suspect Allegedly Used Data Broker Sites to Find Targets’ Addresses

by admin June 17, 2025

The man who allegedly assassinated a Democratic Minnesota state representative, murdered her husband, and shot a state senator and his wife at their homes in a violent spree early Saturday morning may have gotten their addresses or other personal details from online data broker services, according to court documents.

Suspect Vance Boelter, 57, is accused of shooting Minnesota representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, in their home on Saturday. The couple died from their injuries. Authorities claim the suspect also shot state senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman in their home earlier that night. The pair are currently recovering and are “incredibly lucky to be alive,” according to a statement from their family.

According to an FBI affidavit, police searched the SUV believed to be the suspect’s and found notebooks that included handwritten lists of “more than 45 Minnesota state and federal public officials, including Representative Hortman’s, whose home address was written next to her name.” According to the same affidavit, one notebook also listed 11 mainstream search platforms for finding people’s home addresses and other personal information, like phone numbers and relatives.

The addresses for both lawmakers targeted on Saturday were readily available. Representative Hortman’s campaign website listed her home address, while Senator Hoffman’s appeared on his legislative webpage, The New York Times reports.

“Boelter stalked his victims like prey,” acting US attorney Joseph Thompson alleged at a press conference on Monday. “He researched his victims and their families. He used the internet and other tools to find their addresses and names, the names of their family members.” Thompson also alleged that the suspect surveilled victims’ homes.

The suspect faces several charges of second-degree murder.

Privacy and public safety advocates have long argued that the US should regulate data brokers to guarantee that people have better control over the sensitive information available about them. The US has no comprehensive data privacy legislation, and efforts to regulate data brokers from within federal agencies have largely been quashed.

“The accused Minneapolis assassin allegedly used data brokers as a key part of his plot to track down and murder Democratic lawmakers,” Ron Wyden, the US senator from Oregon, tells WIRED. “Congress doesn’t need any more proof that people are being killed based on data for sale to anyone with a credit card. Every single American’s safety is at risk until Congress cracks down on this sleazy industry.”

In many cases, basic information like home addresses can be found through public records, including voter registration data (which is public in some states) and political donations data, says Gary Warner, a longtime digital scams researcher and director of intelligence at the cybersecurity firm DarkTower. Anything that isn’t readily available through public records is almost always easy to find using popular “people search” services.

“Finding a home address, especially if someone has lived in the same place for many years is trivial,” Warner says. He adds that for “younger people, non-homeowners, and less political people, there are other favorite sites” for finding personal information.

For many in the general public as well as in politics, Saturday’s violent crime spree brings new urgency to the long-standing question of how to protect sensitive personal data online.

“These are not the first murders that have been abetted by the data broker industry. But most of the previous targets were relatively unknown victims of stalking and abuse,” alleges Evan Greer, deputy director of the digital rights group Fight for the Future. “Lawmakers need to act before they have more blood on their hands.”

Suspect in Minnesota Shooting Linked to Security Company, Evangelical Ministry

by admin June 15, 2025

A man named Vance Boelter allegedly shot and killed Melissa Hortman, a Democratic Minnesota state representative, and her husband Mark Hortman at their home at some point early Saturday morning while, according to law enforcement, impersonating a police officer. He also allegedly shot state senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman at their home. They are alive, but remain in critical condition.

Law enforcement has said they found a manifesto and hit list in the alleged suspect’s car, which included politicians, abortion providers, and pro-abortion rights advocates. There were also allegedly fliers in his car for the “No Kings” protest against President Donald Trump, which took place in cities across the US on Saturday.

The 57-year-old, who has been identified as the suspected shooter by law enforcement, runs an armed security service with his wife, and has been affiliated with at least one evangelical organization, a ministry he has also run with his wife, according to a tax filing reviewed by WIRED. (His wife could not be immediately reached for comment.) According to public records and archived websites reviewed by WIRED, the suspect served for a time as the president of Revoformation Ministries. A version of the ministry’s website captured in 2011 carries a biography in which he is said to have been ordained in 1993.

According to an archived website for the ministry reviewed by WIRED, the suspected shooter’s missionary work took him to Gaza and the West Bank during the Second Intifada, where, the website states, he “sought out militant Islamists in order to share the gospel and tell them that violence wasn’t the answer.”

A later version of the site was designed, according to an archived copy, by Israeli web design firm J-Town. Charlie Kalech, CEO of J-Town, tells WIRED that the alleged suspect was, in his recollection, “clearly religious and evangelistic. He had lots of ideas to make the world a better place.” The suspect, whom Kalech said was “nothing but nice to me,” commissioned J-Town, Kalech recalled, because they’re Jerusalem-based, and he said he wanted to support Israel.

Over the previous several years, according to LinkedIn posts, he was also the CEO of Red Lion Group, which according to an archived copy of its website had aspirations in the oil refining, logging, and glass production sectors in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a 2023 sermon reviewed by WIRED and delivered by the alleged shooter in Matadi, a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo that is on the border with Angola, he preached against abortion and called for different Christian churches to become “one.”

“They don’t know abortion is wrong, many churches,” he said. “They don’t have the gifts flowing. God gives the body gifts. To keep balance. Because when the body starts moving in the wrong direction, when they’re one, and accepting the gifts, God will raise an apostle or prophet to correct their course.”

”God is going to raise up apostles and prophets in America,” he added, “to correct His church.”
