The Longest Minecraft Journey Ever Just Reached The Edge Of The Map

by admin October 6, 2025

A man completes an absurd but humanity-affirming journey in Minecraft. Control finally gets Hideo Kojima’s voiceover on console. And the first indicator of Ghost of Yotei sales is a potentially impressive one. Welcome to the latest Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku‘s daily roundup of gaming news and culture. My co-author, Zack Zwiezen, is out on vacation to parts unknown for a while so in the meantime, you’re stuck with me. The good news is that I’m closer than ever to getting the Platinum in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. The bad news is the Birds blew their chance to go 5-0 this weekend. I’m glad I only looked up to watch occasionally while grinding the Deep Dungeon. The Eagles might not cruise to another Super Bowl, but at least I did get Ramza to learn Zodiark.

A record-breaking Minecraft hike has finally been completed

Streamer KurtJMac’s “Far Lands or Bust Marathon Subathon” finally saw its goal of reaching the glitched edge of the Minecraft map realized over a decade later, Polygon reports. The Far Lands is the infamous end of the game that appears as a bizarre swiss-cheese wall of stone and dirt reaching up to the sky. It’s no small task for people playing in survival mode without cheats. While not the first person to reach this milestone, KurtJMac’s virtual hike holds the record for longest Minecraft journey ever.

It’s also raised over $525,000 for charity since he started streaming the trek back in 2011. The stream is currently trying to raise $50,000 for UNRWA USA which provides aid to Palestinian refugees. You can see KurtJMac’s reaction to finally reaching his journey’s end at around 3:43:00 in the video below, when the Far Lands suddenly appear out of an ocean-y mist as he’s sailing.

The original Crysis has joined the GOG preservation library

“We’re thrilled to announce that the Crysis Remastered Trilogy has joined our catalog, and the original Crysis is now part of the GOG Preservation Program, ensuring it will always run hassle-free on modern systems,” the storefront announced. “Each remastered title is available separately as well, DRM-free and at great discounts, so that you can experience the evolution of one of gaming’s most iconic shooters, from the jungles of the Lingshan Islands to the streets of New York City, in their definitive modern form.”

Battlefield 6 promises a 120fps mode

MP1st reports that an email EA sent to currently registered players is promoting an extra-responsive framerate on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. “Up to 120FPS or high-fidelity visuals,” it reads, indicating the higher frame rate will be linked to the game’s Performance Mode.

An Interplay cofounder and the first video game champion ever needs your help

Rebecca Heineman won the national championship Space Invaders tournament in 1980 and later cofounded RPG powerhouse Interplay (The Bard’s Tale, Fallout) with Brian Fargo and others. She’s credited on dozens of games, from Wasteland to Heroes of Might and Magic IV, and she’s now trying to crowdsource funds for medical treatment following a diagnosis of an aggressive form of cancer.

“This is the fight for my life. Please help me,” Heineman wrote on her new GoFundMe page (via PC Gamer). “I want to keep creating games and comics and I need your help to beat this cancer.”

Ghost of Yotei was number one in the UK last week for boxed copies sold

That’s via Game Business author Chris Dring who said Sony’s open-world samurai adventure beat out the second week of EA Sports FC, traditionally the best-selling game across all of Europe every year. It also sold three times what Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 did on Switch, but was still 40 percent behind where Ghost of Tsushima was in 2020. Reasons for that drop-off could be the busier release calendar right now, and the fact that there are fewer PS5 units out in the wild at this point than there were PS4s when Tsushima was released.

The Control Ultimate Edition free update is finally out on console

The new content includes the mission “Dr. Yoshimi Tokui’s Guided Imagery Experience” which features a voiceover by Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima. Players also get access to costumes that were originally pre-order bonuses, as well as new performance settings for both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S including uncapped framerates, VRR and 120Hz display, and HDR support.

Minecraft Is Crossing Over With Dragonball Z, Including Free Super Saiyan Hair Out Now

by admin September 28, 2025

Minecraft is all about making the world your own, and part of that is making your character look how you like, whether that’s simple customization or something from your favorite show, movie, or game. The latest collab to come to Minecraft is Dragonball Z. Mojang hasn’t given us a hard release date, but says this is happening later this year.

As part of the latest Minecraft Live presentation, Mojang teased the new Dragonball Z collaboration. Details on the collab are light, but right now you can get free Super Saiyan Hair from the Minecraft Marketplace, which is available until November 4, 2025.

Minecraft has collaborated with a variety of companies previously. This includes characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Sonic the Hedgehog, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hello Kitty, Terraria, and a whole bunch more. Fashion collaborations include Burberry, Lacoste, and AAPE.

Also announced at Minecraft Live are the Copper Age update landing next week, the holiday 2025 update Mounts of Mayhem, and the educational Friendly Fishing add-on.

Minecraft Welcomes You To The Copper Age

by admin September 27, 2025

When copper debuted in Minecraft on June of 2021, it was immediately a block with tons of potential, thanks to the ability to age the material into a variety of different shades. Now, though, copper is finally living up to all that potential in Mojang’s upcoming update, The Copper Age, which brings a bunch of new options to put all that copper in your storage chests to use. The Copper Age update drops next week, on Septemer 30.

First (and finally), you’ll be able to wear and carry copper. Copper armor, which sits between leather and iron armor in terms of durability and protection, includes the full suite of armor, plus armor for your horse. You’ll also be able to create a full set of copper tools. These items won’t oxidize, and they’ll be more durable than stone tools, but less so than iron.

The copper chest, copper armor, copper lanterns, and other copper tiles.

This update also adds copper chests, golems, and golem statues. You’ll get your first copper chest when you create a copper golem (combine copper blocks and a carved pumpkin to make this new friend-shaped mob). Then, you can put items into the copper chest, and the copper golem will sort those items into normal chests around your base. Additionally, when one of these little guys meets an iron golem, legend has it that something super adorable happens.

Copper golems become golem statues when they fully oxidize. If you chip the gunk off with an axe, the golem will wake up again, and of course you can use wax to stop the oxidation indefinitely. As a statue, though, copper golems have other uses. Like an armor stand, copper golems have a set of different poses that you can toggle through by interacting with the statue. Give your base the right vibe with a welcoming or fearsome golem statue. That’s not all, though. Copper golem statues also work with redstone, with each pose emitting a different signal when they connect to a redstone comparator. We can’t wait to see what clever redstone engineers do with this, seriously.

Copper torches and copper bars.

You can also make copper lanterns, torches (which glow green), chains, and bars to give your hideout a new look, including choosing the patina that matches your preference. Lightning rods will oxidize now, too.

One of the most interesting new additions is the shelf. Shelves are blocks that hold three items that you can use to swap items quickly in and out of your hotbar. Place powered shelves next to each other and employ some redstone, and you can swap out your entire hotbar. Set up shelves with your spare equipment, loadouts for specific types of expeditions, and so on.

The new shelf block.

Lastly, this update will change the dye icons out to make them easier to identify for better accessibility.

Also announced at Minecraft Live are the holiday 2025 update Mounts of Mayhem, the educational Friendly Fishing add-on, and an upcoming Dragon Ball Z collaboration.

The LEGO Minecraft Advent Calendar Is Selling for Pennies, but Only if You Buy Early

by admin September 24, 2025

LEGO has just rolled out its new Advent calendars, and they’re giving early shoppers a real treat. Every year it’s the same story: prices are friendliest at launch then as December gets closer, demand sends them climbing back up.

Right now, the LEGO Minecraft advent calendar (2025 edition) is going for only $38 instead of the usual $44. No wonder it’s already the fan favorite among all the LEGO calendars this season, from Harry Potter to Star Wars – but Minecraft is the #1 best-seller on Amazon.

See at Amazon

LEGO just released its new Advent calendars, and they’re treating early buyers to a welcome bargain. Year after year: prices are kindest at introduction, then closer to December, demand pushes them on the rise. Currently, the LEGO Minecraft Advent Calendar 2025 is available for as low as $38 rather than its normal price of $44.99, which is its lowest ever on Amazon. No wonder it’s already the holiday favorite of all the LEGO calendars available this year, whether it’s Harry Potter or Star Wars—but Minecraft is in the spotlight.

A Christmas Deal That Brings Minecraft to Life

Why this set is exciting is pretty simple: children and adults like counting down to Christmas, and LEGO and Minecraft is as good a sure bet as you’re ever likely to get. Instead of a second box of chocolates, you’re getting 24 buildable surprises that extend the suspense through the morning. Constructed from 300 pieces, the set creates a full-sized Minecraft world to discover one day at a time.

8 classic Minecraft mini-figures are shipped inside: Alex and Steve are present, of course, but you also get a Creeper, stray, drowned, zombie, snow golem, and even a villager in Santa clothes. They all come with holiday-themed accents that still fit the vibe of the holiday countdown without losing the characteristic Minecraft look.

What’s really cool is the way the pieces interact with one another: There’s something new every day and collectively, they build a Minecraft-themed winter village scene. That playmat background in the box acts as the glue to hold everything together so instead of having 24 separate builds, kids see their own Lego world come together over the space of a month.

This Advent calendar isn’t a separate collection: it’s compatible with the entire range of LEGO Minecraft. For someone who already has Minecraft Lego pieces lying around, this slots right into the existing collection. Kids can expand on their worlds, bridge scenes together or start with it and build something even bigger.

And there’s more than just nostalgia at play: LEGO calendars like this one don’t stick around at low launch prices. Historically, these drop right around release week before climbing steadily into mid-November, as the frenzy for Advent calendars kicks in. Waiting until December almost guarantees you’ll pay list price—or risk a sell-out altogether.

Minecraft Live 2025 Is Coming At The End Of September

by admin September 15, 2025

It’s been almost six months since Mojang Studios hosted an installment of Minecraft Live, which provides a look ahead at what’s coming to Minecraft. Now, the studio has set the next Minecraft Live for September 27 with a teaser trailer that may have some hints about what to expect.

Minecraft Live will stream on Minecraft’s official site, as well as the game’s YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, and TikTok accounts. The start time will be September 27 10 AM PT/1 PM ET. So far, Mojang has only promised that the episode will feature “the inside scoop on unannounced game drops, insight from our developers, and more.”

As Mojang has done in the past, the Minecraft Live stream will be followed by a longer Deep Dig After Show, which will be hosted by Vu Bui. The after show will feature Minecraft developers and guests as they show off the game’s upcoming features.

Minecraft’s next update, The Copper Age, is likely to be featured on Minecraft Live and may even be released this month. The update will introduce multiple uses for copper and feature the Copper Golem. Earlier this month, Minecraft debuted Superman-themed DLC that was inspired by the recent reboot movie.

Outside of the franchise, Nintendo’s upcoming cozy game Pokemon Pokopia appears to be borrowing elements from both Minecraft and Animal Crossing. But with the original Minecraft still as popular as ever, it doesn’t seem likely to be dethroned anytime soon.

Pokemon Pokopia Is Giving Off Serious Animal Crossing And Minecraft Vibes

by admin September 12, 2025

One of the most surprising reveals during today’s Nintendo Direct is that Pokemon has a new game, Pokemon Pokopia, coming next year, and it’s a big departure for the franchise. From the reveal trailer, Pokopia looks like a cross between Minecraft, Animal Crossing, and Dragon Quest Builders set in the Pokemon universe.

There are no battles to fight in this cozy game, so this might be a utopia for any battle-weary Pokemon. Players assume control of a Ditto–a Pokemon that can mimic other creatures–who has taken on the form of a human. The Ditto can craft materials and buildings in addition to borrowing powers from various Pokemon to grow crops and take care of the creatures under their care.

Pokemon Pokopia will be released on Switch 2 in 2026, but it doesn’t have an exact release date yet.

Following the reveal of Pokemon Pokopia, Nintendo announced that the next game in the franchise, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, will be getting a paid DLC expansion and two new Mega evolutions. A recent video from Pokemon Legends: Z-A also introduced Malamar as an influencer in the world of the game.

Earlier this week, Nintendo secured a patent that may reshape the future of Pokemon-inspired games like Palworld. The patent covers “the fundamental gameplay mechanic of summoning a character and letting it fight another” within a video game.

New Minecraft Mod Turns It Into Portal 2 With A Level Editor

New Minecraft Mod Turns It Into Portal 2 With A Level Editor

by admin August 25, 2025

It’s highly unlikely that we’ll see a new Portal game anytime soon from series creators Valve. But now you can create your own Portal 3 in a place I didn’t expect: Minecraft. Or you can play through 50 pre-made Portal 2 puzzles via a newly released Minecraft mod.

On August 22, a group of 20+ modders and fan devs released Portal: Java Edition, a free remake of Valve’s 2011 first-person puzzler built entirely in vanilla Minecraft using resource and data packs. That technically means the project, which is free to download now on PC, doesn’t use any “mods,” though the creators do include extra third-party mods that help with optimization. And you’ll likely want to install those if you plan to play. This rebuilt version of Portal 2 in Minecraft is pushing the Java version of the popular crafting game hard, and it can chug on even beefy PCs without the extra mods.

According to the team behind it, Portal: Java Edition started development in 2020 and has taken roughly five years to complete. The mod includes all the mechanics and features from Portal 2, including portals (of course), lasers, light bridges, and mobility gels. The project is shipping with 50 levels spread across eight map packs. And if you burn through all of those, well, don’t worry, you can make some more, thanks to the included level editor. The level editor should be pretty easy to use for Minecraft vets, as it seems to function just like building anything else in Mojang’s crafting game, just with more big red buttons and companion cubes.

To play Portal: Java Edition, you’ll need to own Minecraft: Java Edition on PC and then download the project’s files from GitHub. I had to download an older version of Minecraft to get Portal working in the game, but that’s not too hard and is fully supported by the official Minecraft launcher. Once more people are playing this and building levels in it, I expect to replay Doom’s E1M1 and the first level of Super Mario Bros. in the near future.

Shovel Game combines Minecraft, Mozart and hell

Shovel Game combines Minecraft, Mozart and hell

by admin August 22, 2025

I did not expect to meet Mozart in Shovel Game, nor did I expect him to ask me to mine a pyramid of shit, with the helpful advice that I start at the top to avoid any floating shitbricks. Mozart is probably the least interesting thing about Shovel Game, actually.

It’s a shortform first-person oddity with Minecraft-style destructible voxels (yes I know Minecraft doesn’t really use voxels) and a touch of AHL_5am. The idea is to tunnel through “a sequence of strange and unfamiliar spaces”. Here’s a trailer.

Watch on YouTube

Only certain blocks can be mined, and you’ll want to dig with caution, because the catacombs are full of groaning, wailing sprites that look like Zordon from Power Rangers. It’s as if somebody had cracked the glass on his energy tube, freeing the galactic wizard’s blobby visage to wander the Earth in pain. Enemies kill you on contact and I’ve yet to discover any weapons, just my trusty shovel and an 8-ball – purpose unknown.

It’s coming to Steam, but you can find a demo on Itch.io. Expect plenty of aggravation: there’s a labyrinth full of oozy blue phantoms that requires fast footwork. Also a kind of cosmic chapel full of what appear to be flattened babies. The developer is Luke Vincent, who created it for a “shovelware horror” gamejam, ho ho.

Bonus game mention: leafing through the submissions page for that jam, I discover a new work from Mike Klubnika, architect of Buckshot Roulette and the recent S.p.l.i.t., which Nic had eloquent emotions about. Co-developed with James Dornan, Klubnika’s jam game is called Crank It and is about being stuck behind a set of gadgets in a cavernous hallway, trying to spot horrible creatures. Got to say, this sounds far worse than shit pyramid Mozart.
