5 best Hulu movies to watch on Memorial Day

by admin May 26, 2025

Traditionally, Memorial Day is at the beginning of summer, but it’s also a day when we reflect on American history and its many traditions. If you’re looking for an appropriate way to celebrate the long weekend, we’ve pulled together a list of movies that might be perfect for the occasion.

Each of the movies on this list gets at something about the American experience, and they’re also just great movies in their own right. Check them out below.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

The Thin Red Line (1998)

One of the greatest war movies ever made, Terence Malick’s The Thin Red Line is a meditative look at an entire troop of soldiers stationed in the South Pacific. It’s undoubtedly lighter on battle than your average war movie, but The Thin Red Line nonetheless finds ways to depict war that feel almost entirely unique.

The movie’s interest in all of these soldiers, and the way the camera seems to wander from famous actor to famous actor, makes us come to see how each man deals with the extremity of the circumstances they’re facing, and the way it’s juxtaposed with the beauty of their surroundings.

You can watch The Thin Red Line on Hulu.

War of the Worlds (2005)

Steven Spielberg made several movies in the wake of 9/11 that seemed to be, at least in part, about the terrorist attack and its aftermath. None of them was more bracing than War of the Worlds, though, which tells the story of a struggling father as he’s forced to deal with an alien invasion that upends his life.

The opening attack is some of the most harrowing footage you’re likely to see. Anchored by Tom Cruise in the last era when he was still willing to play regular people, War of the Worlds is an impressive accomplishment in scale and tone.

You can watch War of the Worlds on Hulu.

L.A. Confidential (1997)

A throwback to the hard-bitten noirs of the 1940s, but with an even more cynical edge, L.A. Confidential tells the story of three police officers working inside the LAPD in the 1950s.

The complex ecosystem of information and corruption the movie depicts is fascinating in and of itself, as is the ultimate heroism of the three cops at the movie’s center. L.A. Confidential is a crime movie about the foundational myths of Hollywood and about the seedy underbelly that has always existed right alongside it.

You can watch L.A. Confidential on Hulu.

Tombstone (1993)

As the best depiction of the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral, Tombstone is a throwback to the classic Westerns of the ’40s and ’50s in the best possible way. Starring Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer, the movie is romantic about the old west, even as it understands the peril that waits around every corner.

The final gunfight here is great, but what’s even better are Russell and Kilmer’s central performances as two of the Old West’s most famous heroes. Russell’s Wyatt Earp is a reluctant hero who finds himself drawn into conflict at least partially because no one else will step up. As Doc Holliday, Kilmer is even better, finding the strength for one last fight even as he becomes more and more delirious.

You can watch Tombstone on Hulu.

The Last of the Mohicans (1993)

A sensitive, fascinating depiction of Native American life at a time when it was being upended, The Last of the Mohicans follows a native tribe as they come into conflict with the colonists who live near their land. As they work to avoid getting enveloped in the broader French and Indian War, we’re treated to plenty of detail about their way of life and its disappearance.

Daniel Day-Lewis gives a characteristically riveting performance as the movie’s lead character, a half-Native American who has been adopted into their culture, but Michael Mann’s movie works in part because he is so fascinated with the texture of the world around him.

You can watch The Last of the Mohicans on Hulu.

Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air M4 drops to $850 for Memorial Day

by admin May 26, 2025

If you’ve been eyeing Apple’s new MacBook Air with the M4 chip, now’s a good time to scoop one up. The 13-inch model (16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) is over $100 off its usual starting price of $999 in a Memorial Day sale on Amazon — and a coupon available for three of the four colors brings the price down even further to $850. That applies to the 13-inch M4 MacBook Air in Midnight, Silver and Sky Blue. The Starlight variant is on sale too, but with no additional coupon, making it $899.

Apple

Models with higher storage options are on sale too, also with savings of more than $100 and a coupon for certain colors. The model with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD is down to around $1,050 from its usual $1,199, while the version above that (24GB RAM, 512GB SSD) is around $1,250 compared to the normal $1,399 price tag. The prices are unbeatable for the laptop that’s only been out for a few months, and is our pick for the best MacBook you can get in 2025.

The 13-inch MacBook Air M4 was released in March and scored a 92 in our review. Engadget’s Devindra Hardawar called it “a nearly flawless ultraportable,” especially with a starting price that’s lower than what we’ve seen in earlier models. It weighs just 2.7 pounds and measures 0.44 inches thick, but is a fast and capable laptop with a bright display and impressive battery life. In Engadget’s tests, the 13-inch MacBook Air lasted for more than 18 hours with HD video running.

Even the base model should be fine for most users, with a 10-core CPU, 8-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. As Devindra noted in his review, this year’s 13- and 15-inch MacBook Airs are “zippy, wonderfully light and can last well beyond a full day of work.”

Hisense’s U65QF QLED, which features a 144Hz panel and built-in Google TV, is down to $529.99 for a limited time.

Memorial Day weekend isn’t just for barbecues and beach trips — it’s also a chance to score some of the best tech deals you’ll find all season. And despite the fact the holiday isn’t until tomorrow, May 26th, multiple retailers are already offering steep discounts on some of our favorite gadgets, from big-ticket items to everyday essentials.

Below, we’ve rounded up a few highlights, from LG’s C4 OLED TV to Garmin’s Forerunner 265, both of which are down to their best price to date. We’ve also included practical (and affordable) finds like video doorbells and location trackers, along with a selection of miscellaneous gems, from discounted MacBooks and Hoto’s handheld vacuum to affordable trinkets that’ll make life a little better. 1. Speaker deals
  2. Earbud and headphone deals
  3. TV and streaming device deals
  4. Smart home deals
  5. Smartwatch and wearable deals
  6. Tablet and e-reader deals
  7. Outdoor and travel deals
  8. Other miscellaneous deals

Speaker deals

  • The second-gen Sonos Roam is available for an all-time low of $134 ($45 off) from Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Sonos. Unlike its predecessor, the portable speaker is ready to use right out of the box and features a dedicated button for Bluetooth pairing. It isn’t as powerful as the Move 2 — and it doesn’t offer line-in support — but it still sounds great and integrates well with the rest of the Sonos ecosystem, which makes it relatively easy to switch music between the company’s speakers.
  • Anker’s tiny Soundcore Select 4 Go is matching its all-time low of $19.99 at Amazon, down from $49.99. Along with IPX67 waterproofing, the Bluetooth speaker offers up to 20 hours of battery life and can be paired with a second Select 4 Go for stereo sound.
  • The Beats Pill is on sale for around $99.95 ($50 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target, which is $2 shy of its best price to date. The portable speaker offers noticeably improved sound over the previous model, along with support for lossless audio via USB-C. It also offers twice as much battery life, adds IP67 water and dust resistance, and includes native Find My support on both Android and iOS. Read our review.
  • You can buy the JBL Clip 5 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target for around $49.95 ($30 off), which nearly matches its best price to date. The Bluetooth speaker offers a built-in carabiner so you can easily attach it to, say, a backpack, along with IP67 water resistance. The Clip 5 also offers Auracast support, so you can pair it with compatible JBL speakers for a stereo sound.
  • The Sony ULT Field 3 is available at Amazon and Walmart for around $148 ($52 off), which is its best price to date. The portable Bluetooth speaker features a dedicated ULT button to boost bass and volume, and delivers up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge. With a detachable shoulder strap and an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, it’s also a great companion for beach days.

Earbud and headphone deals

  • If Sony’s new $449 WH-1000XM6 headphones are out of your budget, Sony’s WH-1000XM5 are on sale for around $298 (about $100 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target, which is one of their better prices to date. While they don’t fold down for easy storage, they still deliver top-tier noise cancellation, sound quality, and comfort. The new model does offer some improvements, but the upgrades aren’t significant, making the XM5 a good option at this price. Read our review.
  • Right now, you can pick up Bose’s QuietComfort Headphones from Amazon, Best Buy, and Bose for $229 ($120 off), which is one of their best prices to date. They’re foldable and exceptionally comfortable — much like their predecessor, the Bose QC 45 — and they retain lengthy battery life. However, the newer headphones sport adjustable noise cancellation and custom modes, though they lack support for higher-quality Bluetooth codecs and the immersive audio mode found on the QC Ultra Headphones.
  • The Beats Studio Pro are available at Amazon in white starting at $169.99 ($170 off) or for $30 more at Best Buy and Target. The comfortable headphones offer improved noise cancellation and sound over their predecessor, with support for lossless playback over USB-C. They also work well with both iOS and Android devices, providing native support for each platform’s fast pairing and FindMy features. Read our review.
  • Does a gaming headset count as headphones? SteelSeries’ Arctis Pro Nova Wireless for the PlayStation, Switch, mobile, and PC platforms is steeply discounted at Amazon, costing $228.93 (normally $349.99). We adore this model, having called it “close to the be-all, end-all gaming headset” in our 2022 review. Despite being a couple of years old, it’s still worth a buy, especially at this price.

TV and streaming device deals

  • You can also buy the latest Amazon Fire TV Cube at Amazon, Best Buy, and The Home Depot for $99.99 ($40 off), which is just $10 shy of its all-time low. The third-gen Cube functions as both a traditional Echo speaker and a Fire TV streaming device with support for Wi-Fi 6E, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and HDR. The 4K device also integrates well with Amazon Alexa for extensive hands-free voice control.
  • You can buy the standalone Amazon Fire TV Remote for $27.99 ($7 off) at Amazon and Best Buy, which is $3 shy of its all-time low. The remote offers a pair of programmable buttons and backlighting, along with a useful remote finder feature that lets you quickly find it using your voice or by pressing a button in the app.

Smart home deals

  • The Blink Mini 2 has returned to its all-time low of $19.99 ($10 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. If you want to use the 1080p wired camera outside, you can also grab it with the weather-resistant power adapter for $29.98 ($20 off) at Amazon. The camera offers improved image and audio over the prior model, along with a wider 143-degree field of view and USB-C. It also retains useful features like two-way audio and motion alerts in an easy-to-mount design.
  • Mill is selling its Mill Food Recycler for $874, down from $999. That’s not quite on par with its all-time low of $799, but it’s still a small way to save on the high-tech trash can, which can transform kitchen scraps into a compost-like material for your garden overnight. It helps keep your kitchen from smelling bad, cuts down on food waste, and reduces the trash you generate. Read our review.
  • The Meross Outdoor Smart Plug is on sale for $20.99 ($10 off) at Amazon, which is just a few cents shy of its lowest price to date. The IP44-rated waterproof plug features a pair of independently controlled AC outlets and support for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings, allowing you to schedule and control your outdoor gadgets with just your voice.
  • You can currently buy Coway’s Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty from Amazon and Coway for $169.99, down from $229.99, which is one of the better prices we’ve seen in recent months. The small HEPA air purifier features a four-stage filtration system that’s ideal for smaller rooms, and it automatically powers down after 30 minutes once it detects the air is clean.
  • The weatherproof Blink Outdoor 4 is 50 percent off at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target, where you can pick it up for $49.99 for a limited time. The 1080p security camera includes upgrades like person detection, improved image quality, and a wider field of view than prior models, all while retaining support for motion detection, night vision, and two-way audio. It can also last up to two years on a pair of AA batteries.
  • Amazon is selling a single Eero Pro 7, which can cover up to 2,000 square feet, for $549.99 ($150 off); you can also grab a pair for $799.99 ($150 off) or three units for $949.99 ($150 off). The dual-band mesh router supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard, offering speeds up to 3.9Gbps. Each unit also includes two 5Gbps ethernet ports and can function as a smart home hub with Matter support, a Zigbee radio, and a Thread border router.
  • The second-gen Ring Indoor Cam is available at Amazon and Best Buy for $34.99 ($25 off), which is $5 shy of its best price to date. The wired camera features a physical privacy cover that lets you block the camera and microphone, while its redesigned mount lets you easily adjust the camera’s angle. It also retains a number of features from its predecessor, including 1080p resolution, color night vision, and two-way audio.

Smartwatch and wearable deals

  • Garmin’s 41mm Venu 3S is on sale at an all-time low of $349.99 ($100 off) at Amazon and REI. The Venu 3S is our favorite Garmin smartwatch, one that combines contactless payments and other smart features with a broad swath of health tools, including period tracking, abnormal heart rate alerts, and fall detection. It features a microphone and speaker for taking calls, too, though you’ll need your phone to take advantage of said feature since the 3S lacks built-in cellular connectivity. Read our review.
  • The 49mm Apple Watch Ultra 2 is on sale for $739 ($60 off) at Amazon and Best Buy, which is one of the better prices we’ve seen this year. The rugged wearable offers the brightest display of any Apple wearable, along with the longest battery life. It also packs Apple’s S9 SiP and second-gen ultra wideband chips, allowing you to take advantage of Apple’s handy double tap feature. Read our review.
  • Best Buy is selling the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 in the 40mm / Wi-Fi configuration starting at $219.99 ($80 off) with an extra Samsung band. The latest Samsung wearable is faster than its predecessor and can track your location even more accurately courtesy of its new dual-frequency GPS. It also sports a host of new features, like FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection and irregular heart rate notifications. Read our review.

Tablet and e-reader deals

  • Amazon’s latest Fire Max 11 tablet is on sale for $174.99 ($50 off) at Amazon and Best Buy. The slate is the most powerful and capable in Amazon’s current lineup of budget-friendly Fire tablets. It sports a bright 11-inch display and support for optional accessories like a keyboard and stylus, though it’s still better suited for entertainment than real work. Read our review.

Outdoor and travel deals

  • The LifeStraw Peak Series Straw — which can filter bacteria, parasites, and microplastics from water — is on sale at Amazon and REI starting at $18.69 (about $6 off), one of its best prices to date. You can use the handy outdoor gadget to drink directly from streams or rivers, yet the convenient design also allows you to attach it to bottles or connect it to gravity hose systems. The Peak Series model also features a more durable design and faster flow rate than earlier models, which is a boon for anyone in the backcountry.
  • You can buy the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter starting at $19.54 at Amazon. The all-in-one adapter sports a single USB-C port and four USB-A ports, so you can power up a wide range of gadgets in more than 200 countries, including the UK, Japan, Australia, Italy, and more.
  • Best Buy is selling the Starlink Mini for $299.99 ($200 off). The DC-powered Mini comes with a built-in Wi-Fi 5 router that’s integrated directly into the portable satellite dish. It delivers speeds over 100Mbps and takes just minutes to set up, offering quick and easy internet access while on the go (with a qualifying internet plan starting at $50 a month). Read our review.
  • You can buy the AeroPress Original for around $31.95 ($8 off) at Amazon, Walmart, and Target right now. The 3-in-1 coffee maker is one of our favorite coffee gadgets, as it easily brews 10 ounces of regular coffee or multiple espresso-style shots in about a minute. It’s also easy to clean and comes with accessories like a scoop, stirrer, and paper macro filters, so brewing up a cup of coffee on the go is even easier.
  • The Thermacell E90 Mosquito Repeller is available for $42.49 (about $7 off) at Amazon. The rechargeable device repels bugs within a 20-foot radius for up to nine hours at a time using its built-in battery. It also comes with a nine-hour cartridge, though 40-hour refills are also available.
  • The Helinox Chair Zero — a personal favorite of several Verge staffers — is on sale at REI and Amazon for around $105 ($35 off), which is its best price to date. The collapsible backpacking chair is exceptionally lightweight and easy to pack, given it weighs just a pound; it’s also built well enough to support up to 265 pounds and is both comfortable and stable, despite its portable design.
  • REI is currently selling the Exped MegaMat Duo Sleeping Pad starting at $277.39, down from its normal retail price of $369.95. The 4-inch, self-inflating mattress is a favorite of ours for camping thanks to its extra-wide design, along with its open-cell polyurethane foam and generous padding, the latter of which is designed to keep you warm and comfortable when temperatures begin to dip. It also makes for a great air mattress for guests, regardless of where you put it.
  • The Half Dome 2 Tent is on sale at REI with a footprint for $209.29 ($90 off), which is one of the best prices we’ve seen on the REI-branded tent. The inexpensive three-season offering is easy to set up and offers plenty of space for two people, with built-in pockets for organizing gear and two large doors that roll up. It’s certainly not the lightest offering you can buy, but at this price, it’s an easy recommendation for first-time backpackers and anyone looking for a solid tent for car camping.

Other miscellaneous deals

  • Dell’s 16 Plus Windows laptop that released earlier this year is seeing steep discounts when you buy directly through Dell itself. We’re particularly impressed with the discount on the model that has a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution screen (instead of FHD+ in the base configuration), 16GB of RAM, Intel’s Core Ultra 7 256V processor, and 1TB of NVMe storage for $799.99 (normally $1,149.99).
  • You can buy an Anker 341 USB-C Hub for $25 ($14 off) at Amazon, which is just $2 shy of its best price to date (Anker is also matching the price when you use promo code WS7DV2R8BLKO). The 7-in-1 hub packs a variety of ports into a compact, travel-friendly design, including two USB-A 3.0 ports, a USB-C data port, a USB-C power port with up to 100W passthrough charging, and both SD and microSD card slots.
  • Belkin’s older MagSafe 2-in-1 Wireless Charging Stand is down to $73.99 ($17 off) at Amazon, which is one of the lowest prices we’ve seen. It delivers up to 15W of power to MagSafe-compatible iPhones, with a pad that can also charge a pair of AirPods or a second Qi-enabled device, all while propping up your phone at a convenient viewing angle.
  • You can pick up PowerA’s Enhanced Wireless Controller starting at $35.62 ($25 off) at Amazon, which is $3 shy of its best price to date. A number of designs are on sale, too, ranging from an Animal Crossing-inspired option to Mario-themed ones. Overall, the colorful gamepad is a good budget model for the Nintendo Switch, complete with support for Bluetooth, remappable buttons, and motion controls.
  • If the mere prospect of summer already has you sweating, Jisulife’s adorable handheld fan is on sale at Amazon in an assortment of colors starting at $14.39 (about $4 off), matching its all-time low. Jisulife’s bag-friendly option is a pretty no-frills affair, though it does pack a built-in stand and can charge via USB-C; it also doubles as a 4,800mAh battery pack, as if its base functionality and the adorable bear ears weren’t enough.
  • The Slice Auto-Retractable Box Cutter is on sale for $14.60 (about $5 off) at Amazon, which is its best price so far this year. The ceramic blade automatically retracts, making it a safe tool for opening packages around the house or office.
  • Anker’s 610 Magnetic Phone Grip is on sale for $12.79 (about $3 off) at Amazon. The sturdy donut-shaped ring attaches securely to MagSafe-compatible iPhones while also doubling as a kickstand.
  • The Goliath Power Saber is on sale at Amazon for $13.90 (about $37 off), its lowest price to date. The so-called “power saber” isn’t an official Star Wars toy, sadly, but it’s a fun light-up blade that can automatically extend and retract; it will also collapse when you actually press it against something, meaning it’s a relatively safe pick for kids.

Update, May 25th: Adjusted pricing / availability and added a selection of new deals, including those for Apple’s latest entry-level iPad, the Google Pixel 9 Pro, and Hoto’s portable vacuum and air blower.

5 best Amazon Prime Video movies to watch on Memorial Day

by admin May 26, 2025

Memorial Day is a holiday designed to commemorate those we’ve lost in war, but it’s also a celebration of life. While many people get an extra day off, deciding what to do with that day can be difficult.

If you’re looking for something easy to do over the long weekend, we’ve got you covered. We’ve pulled together five movies on Amazon Prime Video that are all worth your time. Check them out below.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

Bull Durham (1988)

Although Memorial Day is mainly about remembering the fallen, baseball has always been crucial to its celebration. Bull Durham tells the story of a veteran minor-league baseball player (Kevin Costner) who mentors a much younger player (Tim Robbins) bound for the majors. As the two of them learn from each other, they both become involved with the same woman (Susan Sarandon), who just happens to be a superfan of their team.

Bull Durham is a movie about what it means when your dream becomes your job and the moment you realize that while you might be great at something, you aren’t the best at it.

You can watch Bull Durham on Amazon Prime Video.

The Deer Hunter (1978)

A remarkable war movie that reminds us how much soldiers lose even if they get to return home, The Deer Hunter follows a group of friends living in a small Pennsylvania town as they prepare to ship out for Vietnam. When Nick, one of them, returns home, he finds it difficult to return to normal life, so much so that he heads back to Vietnam in search of a friend who never came home.

Anchored by remarkable performances from Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, and Christopher Walken, The Deer Hunter is a thoughtful meditation on war that spends most of its time away from the conflict.

You can watch The Deer Hunter on Amazon Prime Video.

BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Based on a true story, BlacKkKlansman follows a Black cop in the 1970s who decides to infiltrate the KKK simply by putting on a white voice. When he recruits a more seasoned cop for help, the two of them work to take down the Klan even as the organization is working hard to sanitize its own image.

Written and directed by Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman also has plenty of style. At its core, though, it’s a movie about racism in America and all the ways that it has and hasn’t changed over the decades since this film’s events took place.

You can watch BlacKkKlansman on Amazon Prime Video.

Fury (2014)

Set in the final days of World War II, Fury follows the hardened crew of a single tank as they execute a mission deep inside Nazi territory. Anchored by one of Brad Pitt’s great movie star performances, Fury is the kind of war movie that acknowledges both how much danger these soldiers are in and how much war can pervert the incentives of people who aren’t necessarily professional soldiers.

With direction from David Ayer, Fury is definitely more hardcore than any other movie on this list, and that’s undoubtedly intentional.

You can watch Fury on Amazon Prime Video.

Till (2022)

Till is an examination of one of the most well-known murders in the history of American race relations. Till tells the story of Emmett Till, a young Black boy from Chicago who is lynched while visiting family in Mississippi in 1955. Emmett’s death is a well-known story, but Till spends most of its time following Emmett’s mother as she works to seek justice for her murdered son and to prove that he was lynched.

Anchored by a phenomenal central performance from Danielle Deadwyler, Till is riveting and surprising in ways few movies of this kind manage to be.

You can watch Till on Amazon Prime Video.

Impossible, Lilo & Stitch Make Big Memorial Day Money

by admin May 26, 2025

We’ve got two major Hollywood movies this holiday weekend, Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch, and they’re both killing it in theaters.

Per Variety, the two films have made for the “largest Memorial Day holiday in history.” At $341.7 million worldwide, Lilo has blown well past initial projections and its current domestic take of $145.5 million has replaced Top Gun: Maverick (which earned $160 million through all four days in 2022) as Memorial Day’s best opening weekend.  Domestically, it’s the second-best holiday weekend start behind Black Panther’s $242 million during Presidents Day 2018. Lilo is one of the biggest debuts for Disney’s live-action remakes, just behind 2019’s The Lion King and 2017’s Beauty & the Beast, which respectively grossed $191 million and $174 million, but it’s likely to earn $183 million by the end of the four-day weekend.

Meanwhile, Final Reckoning opened to $190 million worldwide. It released a week prior in Australia, South Korea, and other territories, so its international audience made up $127 million’s worth of that haul. By weekend’s end, its $63 million domestic take may jump up to $77 million, a new record for the Mission: Impossible series. Both films have received strong critical and audience reception, helped by growing momentum ahead of their releases. Nostalgia drives both movies: Lilo is based on Disney’s 23-year-old classic, and Reckoning may be the last film in the series, or just the last to star Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt.

Regardless, audiences are going out in droves to see movies this weekend, including holdovers like Final Destination Bloodlines, Sinners, and Thunderbolts. Variety noted it’s been over a decade since people went to the theaters this much during Memorial Day, and a marked improvement from 2024’s weaker showing of Furiosa and Garfield. And the summer season continues with Ballerina, How to Train Your Dragon, and 28 Years Later in June, followed by Superman and Fantastic Four in July.

Let us know what you thought of Mission: Impossible and Lilo & Stitch in the comments below.

22 Best Memorial Day Mattress and Bedding Sales (2025)

by admin May 25, 2025

Photograph: Wired

Leesa

Leesa’s Early Access Memorial Day Sale is code-free, with 30 percent off certain mattresses on its site, plus a free “sleep bundle” that includes two pillows and a microfiber sheet set. Our favorites from Leesa are its cooling mattresses, specifically the Leesa Sapira Chill and the Leesa Legend Chill Hybrid. You can score both during the early sale, with the discount shown based on the price we usually see.

Essentia

Canadian mattress brand Essentia is throwing its name into the Memorial Day mattress sales hat, with 25 percent off sitewide and a free gift with purchase. You’ll see the discount applied once you add the mattress to your cart. The brand’s specialty is organic latex mattresses, and we’ve noted that Tatami organic mattresses are on our radar since they give off good pressure relief for those battling with back pain on the reg.

Plank

Just when firm mattresses couldn’t get more firm, Plank mattress said, “Hold my box.” This is a dual-sided mattress with two firmness levels—”firm” and “firmest”—that are ideal for spinal alignment and firm mattress lovers. WIRED reviewer Adrienne So describes hers as sleeping on a wooden floor, in the best kind of way. Use code MEMORIAL30 for 30 percent off the entire site.

Bedgear

Kick into gear for sleep with Bedgear, thanks to the Memorial Day Sale that will get you between $50 and $300 off select mattress models, no code required. Bedgear makes both our favorite cooling mattress—WIRED reviewer Molly Higgins says the H Performance series hit the mark for support and pressure relief, but especially for cooling thanks to its cooling cover—and our favorite cheap mattress, both of which are included in the sale.

Best Memorial Day Pillows and Sheets Deals

Courtesy of Cozy Earth

Cozy Earth

If you’re interested in trying bamboo sheets, our favorite splurge set is on sale right now. Cozy Earth is known for its decadently soft bamboo sheet set, and while there’s a Memorial Day sale already live that gives you a discount for buying three items or more, you can use our code WIRED to get 35 percent off anything on Cozy Earth’s site. We’ve tested tons of Cozy Earth items, from bamboo sheets and comforters to its towels and even socks, and have been impressed at every turn with how soft the items are.

Rough Linen

Linen bedsheets can be a hard sell for some because of the rougher texture, and the name Rough Linen might intimidate you. But linen sheets are not only some of the most breathable sheets you can sleep on (perfect for summer!), they last longer, making for a great investment. They’ll soften up over time, too. Our favorite heavyweight linen comes from Rough Linen, and we’re testing the brand’s smoother linen set next. Score both sheet sets for about 10 percent off right now.

Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle makes both bedding and mattresses, including the newest addition to our linen sheets guide. The bedding company’s linen-cotton blend sheets are softer than your usual linen (great for anyone who wants to dip their toes into linen!) but still pack breathability and structure. Tuft & Needle has 40 percent off select bedding right now, plus 20 percent off mattresses, and that sale includes this comfy set. Even my husband, a certified linen hater, said he liked sleeping on these sheets. They’ve also got percale sheets that use Supima cotton, making those softer than your usual percale sheet.

The Citizenry

I’ve slept on every major sheet brand and every type of sheet, and the brand I recommend shopping the most is The Citizenry. This artisanal brand makes he best soft yet breathable percale sheets and the best linen sheets for the price, both of which are organic. You’ll even find The Citizenry’s sheets in the WIRED 101 that lists our 101 favorite gear ever. The sheets are already a great price for what you’re getting and aren’t often on sale, which makes the current Memorial Day Sale so exciting. Everything on the site is 20 percent off, no code required, including both sheet sets we can’t stop recommending.

Brooklinen

Brooklinen is a big favorite in the world of bedding, and the company makes a huge range of products. Sheets! Comforters! Pillows! Towels! Bathrobes! You name it, Brooklinen probably has it, and it’s all on sale for 25 percent off right now for Brooklinen’s Memorial Day Sale. We’re especially big fans of the down comforter and down pillow, but Brooklinen’s super crisp organic percale sheets is one of our favorite sets of organic bedding.

Slumber Cloud

If you’re struggling to sleep as the heat only picks up, Slumber Cloud makes our favorite cooling sheets that use a combination of Tencel lyocell and the brand’s own patented fibers to help you stay cool all night long. I’m usually not a big fan of sheets with special technology and fibers in them, but these sheets aren’t like anything else I’ve tried. Not only are they perfect for summer, but Slumber Cloud is running a 30 percent off Memorial Day Sale on its site, so you can get them for much cheaper than usual. The brand’s cooling pillows are on sale, too, and I found the UltraCool both nice and chilly and pretty supportive (and you get a pack of two!)

Sonos portable speakers are 25 percent off for Memorial Day

Sonos portable speakers are up to 25 percent off for Memorial Day

by admin May 25, 2025

Sonos’ speakers are known for their premium price tags, but if you’re looking for a more affordable entry-point to the ecosystem, you can get up to 25 percent off some of the company’s portable speakers and speaker bundles for Memorial Day. That includes $113 off the Sonos Move 2, which brings the speaker’s price down from $449 to $336.

The Sonos Move 2 was introduced in 2023 as the more expensive follow-up to the original Move, Sonos’ first “portable” speaker. You can argue over it’s portability — the Move 2 makes more sense as something your carry to your backyard than take on a hike — but the speaker packs a punch and lets you play music over both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. We liked the Sonos Move 2 when we originally reviewed it, but took issue with how expensive it was, so this sale helps make splurging on it more palatable.

Sonos

Sonos’ powerful portable speaker is available for $339, $113 off its normal price.

$336 at Sonos

If you’re looking for something even more portable and affordable, the Sonos Roam 2 is also on sale for $45 off. Like the Move 2, the speaker has the ability to connect to a smartphone over Bluetooth outside while still being able to hook into your larger Sonos sound system over Wi-Fi at home. The Sonos Roam 2 offers some key improvements to the original Roam’s design, too, like new colors and easier to understand buttons, while still providing the company’s signature sound profile and 10 hours of battery life.

On top of the two speakers, you could also buy a bundle of a speaker and an accessory, like the Sonos Roam 2 and an OtterBox case, or a bundle of multiple speakers. You can get two Roam 2’s for $268 or a Sonos Roam 2 and Sonos Move 2 for $479, for example.

Sonos has faced issues in the last year ironing out software problems — the bugs and missing features were so bad the company’s CEO stepped down — but the fundamentals of how the company’s speakers sound have remained great. With the ship mostly righted on the software side of things, a sale is a great time to see what all of the fuss is about.

3 action movies to watch on Memorial Day

by admin May 25, 2025

Memorial Day is more than just an excuse to get out the grill. It’s also a day designed to honor those we’ve lost in combat, an important hallmark of the wars America has fought over its history.

In that context, we’ve pulled together three action movies that all focus on what it means to be a soldier in one way or another. Some of these movies are more serious than others, but each one should resonate on this particular long weekend.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

One of the best war movies of the past 25 years, Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down follows a platoon of U.S. forces attacked by local rebels in Somalia during the early 1990s. As the soldiers on the ground face relentless fire and are forced to fight to survive, we also come to appreciate the folly of U.S. forces assuming that they can bring peace to the world.

Black Hawk Down is filled with young actors who would eventually become stars, but what really makes the movie work is the fact that none of those actors are more important than the relentless pace of the story being told.

You can watch Black Hawk Down on Netflix.

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

A brilliant examination of the Vietnam War and its aftermath, Da 5 Bloods tells the story of a group of Black veterans of that war who reunite in the country decades later to find the treasure they buried there during the conflict.

As they argue about the state of modern America and discuss how they were abused by the country they call home, the men also find themselves forced to fight for their right to leave with the gold. Anchored by a remarkable central performance from Delroy Lindo, Da 5 Bloods is one of Spike Lee’s more impressive and exciting efforts of the past decade.

You can watch Da 5 Bloods on Netflix.

The Great Escape (1963)

The Great Escape is an action movie that strikes an impressive tonal balance between comedy and drama. Set in a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp, it follows a group of imprisoned soldiers who see it as their obligation to attempt to escape from the camp. As they slowly dig a tunnel to escape, a rogue amongst them keeps trying to break out in more reckless ways.

Although it might minimize some of the horror of living in a Nazi prison camp, The Great Escape is an effective, action-oriented depiction of how much soldiers can fight even after they’ve already been captured.

You can watch The Great Escape on Amazon Prime Video.

5 best Netflix war movies to watch on Memorial Day

by admin May 24, 2025

War is hell, but for the movies, it’s something more complicated. Some directors see war as a stylistic challenge, while others view it as an opportunity to drive home the trauma of the men and women on the ground. Netflix has a selection of war films spanning costume drama, science fiction, and recent history, all valuable in reflecting on the human drama of combat.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

The King (2019)

Pl

A David Michôd-directed adaptation of several of Shakespeare’s history plays, The King was arguably the first big-budget film anchored solely by Timothée Chalamet, whose two Oscar nominations followed shortly thereafter. Chalamet, in his gruff-young-striver mode, plays the young King Henry V during his invasion of France as part of the Hundred Years’ War. The sword-clanging action is pleasurable, solid, and steely in places and realistically anti-climactic in others.

Joel Edgerton, also a co-screenwriter, is Henry’s fictional drinking buddy Falstaff; most entertaining, though, is Robert Pattinson as Louis, the Dauphin of France, with an outrageous accent and a Lord Fauntleroy simper that make him a perfect foil to Chalamet.

Black Hawk Down (2001)

Co

If you prefer your war films jaw-rattling and glamor-less, Ridley Scott’s brutal verité will be right up your alley. In October 1993, the United States led a UN peacekeeping operation in Mogadishu to capture the leader of a Somali terrorist group. A Black Hawk helicopter carrying a contingent of American Special Forces was shot down over the insurgency-torn city.

The men aboard were forced to fight their way out, and Hollywood came calling about eight years later. Black Hawk Down is suffused with eardrum-shattering gunfire and almost relentlessly unwilling to depict soldiery as anything but horrifying. A mile-long cast list led by Josh Hartnett heaves with sweat and anxiety.

Stream Black Hawk Down on Netflix.

Charlie Wilson’s War (2007)

Re

Aaron Sorkin’s script for this Mike Nichols film, about the United States’ arming of the mujahideen during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, is Sorkinesque to its bones, down to the obligatory Gilbert and Sullivan reference. (Philip Seymour Hoffman’s sclerotic CIA agent, roaring out his qualifications, finishes with “And I’m never ever sick at sea!”)

That’s why it’s so curious that the story has the air of being unfinished, leaping from the meddling of one wily Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) to its consequence — the attacks of 9/11, carried out by the very men the US had trained — without deigning to trace the line between points A and B. Still, the film, Nichols’ last, is delightful, an absurd exploration of the backroom kibitzing that populates battlefields.

Stream Charlie Wilson’s War on Netflix.

Dune: Part Two (2024)

Le

Director Denis Villeneuve has made plenty of films about violent conflict —2010’s Incendies (2010) is about the Lebanese Civil War, and 2015’s Sicario is about a CIA strike against a drug cartel. An artistically minded Villeneuve is drawn to the elegant warfare of science fiction. His two-film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune tells the orange-saturated, visually stunning tale of an interplanetary war that is both technologically unsophisticated — our heroes fight with blades and crossbows — and high-tech. (The threat of nuclear warfare hovers.)

The action sequences in Dune: Part Two drift rather than rush and sweep rather than shudder. It’s war as a visual exercise, like a battle plan plotted on an otherworldly map.

Stream Dune: Part Two on Netflix.

Starship Troopers (1997)

Sony Pictures

A more literal transposition of America’s imperialistic desert wars onto science fiction can be found in Paul Verhoeven’s gloriously dumb adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s crypto-fascistic 1959 novel. Verhoeven wanted to make a satire — a film about an expansionist human species defeating an insectoid alien species called the Arachnids. The goal was to question the militaristic undertones of twentieth-century sci-fi by seeming to espouse them. In Verhoeven’s words, the film’s characters are “fascists who aren’t aware of their fascism.”

This metafictional component of the story doesn’t entirely work because the movie lays on the stupidity too thick to be entirely satirical. However, Starship Troopers is a rare film that seems to profit from its shallowness. It was made for a popcorn era that seems to have faded, with Verhoeven’s trademark borderline-softcore love scenes and a cast (Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris) of surpassingly dopey gorgeousness. (Verhoeven says he cast the film to recall the preferred subjects of Leni Riefenstahl, the Nazi documentarian.)
