EA’s takeover, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, and “vanity mega projects”: Human Rights Watch assesses the impact of gaming’s latest controversy

by admin October 4, 2025

Earlier this week, history was made in both the world of video games and private equity. The trio of Affinity Partners, Silver Lake, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced a plan to take EA private for $55bn. This leveraged buyout would be the largest in history and, if approved, will mean the industry giant would be a private company in 2027.

This immediately raised concerns throughout the industry. Despite a statement by EA CEO Andrew Wilson saying the company’s values would remain the same, many were concerned at the $20bn of debt the company would be saddled with. Would EA still support studios like Bioware to make the games it wants to make? Among all this, there were also concerns of a moral nature, due to the involvement of Saudi Arabia’s government in the deal.

Eurogamer spoke to Human Rights Watch’s Saudi Arabia researcher, Joey Shea, to discuss the ethical dilemma at the heart of the buyout. Human Rights Watch – which has yet to issue a comment on the deal – has comprehensively covered the ongoing human rights abuses taking place in Saudi Arabia, and how the Public Investment Fund is directly tied to such abuses.

Watch the Battlefield 6 multiplayer trailer here.Watch on YouTube

“We have found that the public investment fund has contributed to, and is responsible for, human rights abuses” states Shea. “This is a trillion dollars in Saudi state wealth that should be invested to realise the economic and social rights of Saudi citizens. We’ve found it’s been invested in vanity mega projects inside and outside of the country.

“We see this as a deliberate attempt to distract from the country’s human rights abuses […] MBS himself wields enormous power over what is effectively public funds, and he wields this power in a highly arbitrary and personalised manner, rather than the benefit of the Saudi people more broadly. Effectively, Saudi Arabia’s vast fossil fuel-derived state wealth is controlled by one person, which isn’t good for human rights, or business either.”

Saudi Arabian investment through the Public Investment fund is generally broken into two categories: investments to improve the standing of Saudi Arabia worldwide, and investments to bring foreign business and investment to Saudi Arabia itself. According to Shea, video games fall inside the former category as sports entertainment.

“Vision 2030 (a major Saudi government investment plan) is the core economic diversification plan for Saudi Arabia, and within the earliest versions of this plan it explicitly stated that these large investments in sports entertainment options was part of a strategy to enhance the reputation of the country nationally.”

Some have argued that accepting Saudi Arabian investment through the PIF can be separated from the actions of its government, that no country is innocent and everything is tainted. However, according to Shea, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund is directly linked to its human rights abuses. The money used for the EA buyout may itself be attached to these acts.

Shea explains: “In a report we released last year, we documented how the PIF itself has benefited from Human Rights abuses. For example, if we go back to 2017 and the notorious corruption crackdown and the Ritz Carlton, we found that assets that were seized outside of any recognisable legal process wound up in the PIF. Your investment vehicle contains assets that were stolen – that’s a problem!

“We also found that one of those assets that were seized illegally was a company called Sky Prime aviation. This is the company that owned the planes that transferred the hit squad to Istanbul where they murdered Jamal Khashoggi. So if one of the assets your investment fund owns is committing transnational murder in a consulate… that’s pretty outrageous.

“Our call is never ‘don’t invest in Saudi Arabia, don’t invest in Saudi Arabia’. We don’t have a standing boycott. But businesses have a responsibility under the UN guiding principles of Business and Human Rights to do due diligence assessments before engaging in a business relationship, to assess whether that relationship will lead to human rights harm. If it does you should, of course, not engage in that relationship.”

Once the deal goes through, all of EA’s games will be connected to the Saudi state and its human rights abuses. | Image credit: EA

One important detail within the announcement of EA’s leveraged buyout is that it’s pending regulatory approval, which some experts believe won’t be much of a hurdle due to US president Donald Trump’s son-in-law’s involvement with Affinity Partners. When asked whether a deal like this has any chance of being stopped by US regulators, Shea had little hope due to the current political climate in the region and America’s strategic partners there, Saudi Arabia included.

“I don’t see it coming under scrutiny. I think there was a moment in 2023 before October 7th, when there was some political will from some senators in the US to scrutinise Saudi investments through the PIF in the USA. There was some hope that these investments would come under greater scrutiny rather than just for national security impacts – that’s basically the only standard to which foreign investments will be scrutinised, mostly foreign investments from China.”

“We had hoped this could be broadened to include human rights concerns, but at this point, globally, I don’t personally have that much hope.”

Eurogamer contacted EA for comment on matters regarding the private buyout from Affinity Partners, Silver Lake, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds adds Mega Man next year, with post-launch roadmap now revealed

by admin September 27, 2025

Sega has revealed the post-launch roadmap for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, including last night’s announcement that Mega Man will be joining next year as paid DLC.

Capcom’s iconic hero will be joined by Proto Man too, plus there will be a Dr. Wily’s Castle course and a vehicle inspired by canine companion Rush.

The DLC will be available in Q2 next year in the third patch of the game’s Season Pass. That begins later this year with the addition of Minecraft and SpongeBob Squarepants, with Pac-Man to follow early next year.

Then, Q3 of 2026 will see the arrival of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and anime Avatar Legends. Each Season Pass Content Pack includes playable characters, a new vehicle, a new track, emotes and sounds.

In addition, there will be a number of free updates adding new characters and more. Hatsune Miku and Sonic Prime characters are available at launch for Digital Deluxe owners. Then later this year Joker from Persona 5 and Ichiban from Like A Dragon will be added, along with another unknown character.

More free additions will arrive in each quarter next year. You can see the roadmap in the image below.

Mega Man’s inclusion leaked last week, so his reveal at last night’s PlayStation State of Play came as little surprise.

However, the back of the physical box includes artwork for Sega Saturn icon NiGHTS, with fans presuming the jester character will be one of the free characters coming to the game.

Who else do you hope to see join Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds?

Mega 312,233 SOL Deposit Worth $75 Million Crashes Into Coinbase

by admin September 22, 2025

A whale-sized move has just hit Solana (SOL), once again shifting attention back to order books. A total of 312,233 SOL, worth $75,156,559 at the spot price, was transferred to Coinbase Institutional, making it one of the largest individual Solana transactions of recent days and instantly triggering speculation across trading desks.

Whale Alert sounded the first alarm and Arkham confirmed the path: The funds were routed from a Coinbase Prime deposit to a Coinbase Prime hot wallet, with FalconX infrastructure visible in the transaction trail two days earlier, reinforcing the institutional footprint.

At $238 per SOL, this transaction cannot be ignored. This inflow is equivalent to weeks of typical retail flow compressed into a single transaction.

SOL/USDT by TradingView

Against this background, the significance of the transaction is even clearer: Solana has been on an aggressive climb in September, rising from $190 at the end of last month to reach $257.91 at the upper Bollinger Band, before settling in the $238 zone where buyers and sellers are now locked.

The chart is boxed in: $226 is the level that must hold, while $258 is the breakout number that could change market positioning in a matter of hours.

Bottom line

What this transfer means depends on its purpose. If it’s for distribution, then the $75 million held on Coinbase could quickly impact the order books.

However, if it is internal reshuffling or liquidity routing, the chart will remain in play, and the question will be whether bulls have the strength to force a clean push through the $258 ceiling and turn resistance into support.

Pokemon Legends Z-A Is Getting DLC, Raichu Mega Evolutions

by admin September 13, 2025

I’m sure Nintendo expected the biggest news of this morning’s Direct to be all the Mario 40th anniversary news or the new Fire Emblem, but in actuality, it was Pokémon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Dimension DLC. We know nothing about the premise or how it will tie into the RPG’s broader story, but we do know that it is adding not one, but two Mega Evolutions for Raichu, the long-disrespected final evolution of Pikachu. Life is worth living, actually.

The teaser trailer shows Hoopa, the dimension-opening Pokemon, opening a portal to a realm full of new Mega Stones, including two for Raichu. Interestingly enough, both Mega Raichu variants seem to combine elements of both it and Pikachu, with Mega Raichu X having two Pikachu-like tails, and Mega Raichu Y having a body more like Pikachu, with a longer Raichu-style tail and antler-like horns that resemble the lightning bolt at the end of Raichu’s tail. X’s color scheme is also more yellow, similar to Pikachu’s, while Y maintains Raichu’s orange base. Check out the teaser below:

There will no doubt be folks bummed that Mega Raichu X and Y are apparently gated behind a paid DLC. I’m annoyed I likely won’t be able to use either during my main playthrough of Legends: Z-A when it launches next month. After decades of complaining about Raichu not getting any love from Game Freak, I cannot afford to be too picky right now, though. Hopefully there will be some way to access Raichu’s Mega Stones early on in a playthrough after the DLC launches. I am just brainsick enough to play the entire game over again if it means I get to have a Mega Evolution of my favorite Pokémon for the entire run. We don’t currently know how much Mega Dimension will cost, or how long after Legends: Z-A‘s October 16 launch it will be come out.

Reports of mind control exaggerated as Pokemon Legends: Z-A debuts new Mega Evolution

by admin September 10, 2025

Mega Malamar has been announced for Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Eurogamer couldn’t be happier to see its favourite Pokémon get a glow up.

Mega Evolution refers to when a Pokémon undergoes a temporary transformation to increase its power and alter its appearance. In the case of Malamar, its head tentacles have twisted together to resemble a brain and it now has spiked shoulderpads. Unlike its traditional form, Mega Malamar also has longer tentacles and a thinner body, all of which have a beautiful rainbow glow.

Best of all, however, is how Mega Evolution greatly increases Malamar’s hypnotic powers. Perfect for this Dark and Psychic-type squid! If it chooses to, Mega Malamar can rewrite a person’s memories and personality, turning them into a whole new (better) person. We’re sure Mega Malamar would never use these powers for evil or self-promotion though. The official Pokémon website and social media accounts are Malamar-themed, because everyone just wanted to celebrate its special day. Just watch Mega Malamar’s debut video to see people celebrate the joy of Malamar out of their own free will.

SPECIAL REPORT: The Truth About Malamar | Pokémon Legends: Z-AWatch on YouTube

Malamar was already highly notable in the Pokémon universe thanks to the unique evolution requirement you need to meet. Unlike all of those other Pokémon evolutions where you simply stare at the screen, evolving Inkay into Malamar requires turning your whole console upside down. What other Pokémon asks you to put your mind to such good use? I’m sure we can all agree that this, combined with its cool Mega Evolution look, proves Malamar is truly everyone’s best friend.

Mega Malamar is the fourth new Mega Evolution to be announced for Legends: Z-A, with the reveal of Mega Dragonite, Victreebel and Hawlucha coming before it. Since the release of Legends: Z-A is drawing close, we’ll hopefully get a look at more new Mega Evolutions in the coming month. (But none of them will be as awesome as Malamar.) We’ve taken a look at all of the new Mega Evolutions and every returning Pokémon in Legends: Z-A if you want to get an early start on planning your team. Though six Malamars will work for any occasion!

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Mega Matrix (MPU) Files $2B Shelf to Fund Ethena (ENA) Bet

Mega Matrix (MPU) Files $2B Shelf to Fund Ethena (ENA) Bet

by admin September 4, 2025

NYSE-listed firm Mega Matrix (MPU) filed a $2 billion shelf registration on Thursday to establish a digital asset treasury focused on ENA (ENA), the governance token of stablecoin protocol Ethena.

According to the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the firm could sell up to $2 billion of securities, with plans to use proceeds from future offerings to accumulate crypto assets.

The company’s stock declined as much as 6% before recovering following the news. It’s still down nearly 30% since the firm disclosed its crypto pivot on August 25.

With the move, Mega Matrix said it aims to be the first publicly traded company to anchor its digital asset treasury in stablecoin governance by stashing Ethena’s ENA token.

Ethena is the decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol behind the $12 billion USDe “digital dollar,” a token designed to keep a steady $1 price and generate yield by holding spot cryptocurrencies like bitcoin BTC$110,890.28, ether (ETH) selling (shorting) equal amount of derivatives. The protocol’s governance token ENA could benefit from protocol revenues once the mechanism is activated.

In July, a newly-formed company called StablecoinX announced similar plans to go public through a SPAC merger and establish an ENA treasury, targeting to close the deal by the end of the year.

Digital asset treasury firms, or DATs, took Wall Street over by storm, with listed firms pivoting to amass cryptocurrencies by raising funds on traditional capital markets. Strategy (MSTR) pioneered this playbook to eventually become the largest corporate owner of bitcoin, while recent entrants increasingly turned their focus to smaller tokens.

However, the trend may have already burst with several names plunging 70%-80% in the past months and some already trading below the net asset value of their holdings.

Mega Matrix seeks $2b war chest to amass stablecoin governance tokens

by admin September 4, 2025

Mega Matrix is mobilizing a potential $2 billion in capital through a new shelf registration, aiming to execute a corporate-scale accumulation of key stablecoin governance tokens and corner nascent markets for protocol influence.

Summary

  • Mega Matrix filed $2 billion universal shelf registration with the SEC.
  • The capital will fund systematic acquisition of stablecoin governance tokens.
  • Shares fell 3.83% to $1.75 following the announcement, per Yahoo Finance.

According to a press release dated September 4, the Singapore-based holding company, which trades on the NYSE exchange under the ticker MPU, filed a universal shelf registration statement on Form F-3 with the SEC.

The filing seeks to provide Mega Matrix with the flexibility to issue up to $2 billion in various securities, including shares, debt, or warrants, over a three-year period. The company said the capital is earmarked for its “DeFi Asset Treasury,” DAT, strategy, with Ethena’s ENA token named as a primary target for systematic accumulation.

“The $2 billion universal shelf registration, once effective, provides MPU with the flexibility to support our DAT strategy in this new era. Governance tokens are the equity of stablecoin ecosystems, such as ENA. By building strategic positions, MPU gains both financial upside and a seat at the table where the future of money is being coded,” Mega Matrix management said.

Mega Matrix pivots to stablecoin governance

Mega Matrix, which operates the short-drama streaming platform FlexTV through its subsidiary Yuder Pte. Ltd., is now channeling its ambitions toward the core infrastructure of decentralized finance and aims to build “the largest” stablecoin governance token DAT company.

The company’s thesis, as stated in the release, is that governance tokens like ENA represent the equity of stablecoin ecosystems. Besides accruing potential financial returns, Mega Matrix is betting that its crypto treasury can accumulate significant voting power and give it a “seat at the table where the future of money is being coded.”

Per the statement, the company will offer securities “from time to time,” in response to specific capital needs and favorable market conditions. It clarified that the exact terms, including what type of security is sold and at what price, will be determined at the time of each individual offering and detailed in a subsequent prospectus filed with the SEC.

Initial market reaction was cautiously skeptical. Following the announcement, the company’s shares dropped 3.83% to $1.75, according to Yahoo Finance data.

Helldivers 2's Mega Worm Has Been Killed, But It Took 10 Nukes

Helldivers 2’s Mega Worm Has Been Killed, But It Took 10 Nukes

by admin September 2, 2025

After a new Helldivers 2 update, players are discovering that developers Arrowhead have sneakily added a massive and nearly impossible-to-kill super worm, known as the Hive Lord, to the online sci-fi shooter. But one team has felled the beast, though it reportedly took nearly a dozen nukes.

On September 2, PlayStation and Arrowhead pushed out a new, free Helldivers 2 update known as “Into The Unjust.” This big update, available now on PS5, Xbox, and PC, added intricate caves to explore, new missions to complete, and a little surprise. Well, more of a big surprise. The Hive Lord, a bug the size of a skyscraper, is now an enemy you might encounter in Helldivers 2.

While the Hive Lords appeared in the first Helldivers, they hadn’t yet shown up in the sequel. Hive Lords were hinted at in the update’s trailer and have been teased in-game since launch. But Arrowhead didn’t officially list the new massive enemy in the game’s patch notes, so some players discovered the Hive Lords completely by chance and were shocked by their scale. These things are big. Huge. Easily the largest enemy in Helldivers 2. And they are very hard to kill.

At first, players weren’t even sure Hive Lords could be killed, with some reporting the beasts had survived tactical nukes and many, many bullets. But players spotted that sometimes a bullet would penetrate the beast’s armor and that it did react to explosions. “If it bleeds, it can be killed” became a rallying call under some posts of Hive Lords laying waste to players and vehicles. Even still, some weren’t sure. Maybe it was too much for the forces of democracy to handle.

Eventually, one squad of brave and dedicated Helldivers killed a Hive Lord, likely becoming one of the first teams, if not the first team, to do so. According to one of the people involved with killing the massive sand worm, it took 10+ Hellbombs, 8+ 500KG bombs, and “a ton of Ultimatums and Spears/RRs.” According to IsJustSophie, one of the Hive Lord slayers, “I shat my pants when it burst out of the ground.” Seems like a totally fair and reasonable reaction to encountering a massive god worm.

Every Mega Evolution Revealed So Far

by admin August 30, 2025

Pokémon Legends: Z-A is shaking up the series’ formula in more ways than one when it launches in October. It’s got real-time combat, it all takes place in one city rather than an entire region, and it has a new take on multiplayer to take advantage of that new battle system. Even with all this newness, perhaps the most exciting thing Game Freak is adding is more of something old: Mega Evolutions. These superpowered temporary transformations have long been one of Pokémon fans’ favorite battle gimmicks from over the years, and since we’re heading back to Kalos, their region of origin, what better time than now to add a wave of new Mega Evolutions? A list of possible new forms leaked earlier this year, and so far it seems to be accurate. Here are all the Mega Evolutions we know of so far.

Mega Dragonite

Mega Dragonite was the first new form revealed for Legends: Z-A. It emphasizes traits from its pre-evolution, Dragonair, by including a jewel on its tail and adding wings to the sides of its head. It maintains its Dragon/Flying typing, but becomes exceptionally faster and stronger in this form. Mega Dragonite views taking out an enemy quickly as an act of kindness, and has a jolly big smile when it uses powerful attacks because it knows all this violence will be over soon. It’s basically Superman.

Mega Victreebel

Pokémon used a spooky found footage video to reveal Mega Victreebel, but if you take it out of that environment, it is one of the goofier looking Mega Evolutions in the series. The pitcher plant Pokémon’s body has become so engorged with acid that it ties one of its own vines around its throat in order to contain all of it within its bulbous stomach. Now it hops around on its belly as it stalks its prey and loosens the grip around its neck when it needs to projectile vomit its acid onto an enemy.

Mega Hawlucha

Hawlucha’s new Mega form is probably the most straightforward one we’ve seen thus far. It gets buff like it’s been downing creatine, dons a new mask and cape combo, and its feathers form a belt around its waist. Mega Hawlucha also gets a signature move called Flying Press that it used on Machamp in its reveal cinematic.

That’s all the Mega Evolutions we know of so far. Game Freak will no doubt reveal more between now and when Pokémon Legends: Z-A comes to Switch and Switch 2 on October 16. Will Mega Raichu be among them, or will I be made to suffer another slight for my favorite electric rodent? We all know the answer. I don’t need you to rub it in.
