The UK Needs Regulatory Clarity That Matches Ambition

by admin September 27, 2025

Opinion by: Azariah Nukajam, head of regulation and compliance at Gemini

The UK is at a critical juncture in its approach to the rapidly evolving digital assets space.

Having solidified itself as a financial powerhouse in the modern global economy, the government has often spoken about making the UK a “leading global crypto hub.” Policy development has, however, been slow, fragmented and insufficiently ambitious.

Hesitation carries costs for a sector as fast-moving as crypto and decentralized finance (DeFi). Capital, talent and innovation are highly mobile. The UK risks losing ground to more proactive jurisdictions such as the US and Singapore.

To preserve its competitiveness, the government must match its ambition with action while learning from international peers.

Bold ambitions and slow delivery

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK’s financial services regulator, and the UK government should work hand-in-hand to support the growth of the space and ensure these rules are both complied with and achievable. The UK government is responsible for setting the legal framework, while the FCA implements and enforces these rules, providing guidance and timelines on how to adhere to them.

Clear and progressive legislation is essential for any healthy market. A contrasting example is the previous US administration, which took a “regulation by enforcement” approach to regulating the crypto industry, with no clear agency defining the rules by which the crypto industry was governed.

The UK government recently proposed a Draft Statutory Instrument (SI), a forward-thinking framework for regulating crypto assets, hoping to create a crypto-friendly environment within the UK. Theoretically, it’s a significant milestone for the UK’s digital asset sector. But in practice, it’s only a modest step forward for many reasons.

Ongoing discussions among industry participants consistently highlight the slow pace of reform; institutions have long awaited clarity on the UK’s stance on listed crypto products, and in August, the FCA opened retail access to crypto exchange-traded notes. Meanwhile, the increasingly popular crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) remain banned.

Additionally, concerns about the lack of definition of the regulatory boundaries for DeFi — a fast-growing segment of the industry — make it difficult for crypto firms to navigate the DeFi and centralized finance (CeFi) perimeter.

Related: 40% of UK crypto users report blocked payments amid rise in ‘anti-consumer’ practices

The proposed legislative and regulatory rules also require considerably more reporting requirements, burdening firms’ compliance teams and undermining the privacy ethos associated with decentralization. Automated tax reporting to HMRC (the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority) is one example of this, which many argue will discourage investors from using a UK-based exchange and push them to jurisdictions with more favorable tax offerings.

Unless the government takes industry feedback seriously and adjusts to create a holistic framework balancing consumer safeguards and innovation, it risks being left behind in the global crypto race.

An engaged regulator

On the other hand, the FCA has taken a more structured and engaged approach to the UK’s crypto sector, demonstrating that it is willing to engage with crypto firms to prevent market abuse and protect consumers while remaining competitive.

Unlike the government, which often appears reactive, the FCA has been proactive: hosting roundtables, canvassing industry input and setting out a phased approach to regulatory development with its Crypto Roadmap. They have also provided more detailed guidance on effectively implementing specific rules, including consumer protection, market integrity and support for responsible innovation. Even if market participants disagree with the FCA’s proposals, this matters hugely in an industry that values transparency and predictability and is key in giving confidence to UK crypto businesses and investors.

Nevertheless, the challenge lies in the FCA ensuring that its rules are proportionate. While large firms may be able to absorb heavy compliance burdens, smaller startups may struggle to comply, which would deter them from operating out of the UK.

A path toward crypto leadership

The good news is that there’s still time to change course. Other jurisdictions have already moved more decisively with their crypto regulation. The EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation framework gives businesses clear and comprehensive rules to operate within, the CLARITY and GENIUS Acts put the US on the path to global crypto dominance, and the Monetary Authority of Singapore has introduced a rigorous licensing process alongside regulatory sandboxes and pilot approaches. While a second-mover advantage will allow the UK to learn from the experiences of others, it also risks being left behind if they don’t act quickly to address the industry’s concerns.

The regulator has laid a promising foundation, and through greater coordination with government, bold ambitions and precise implementation, the UK can lay fertile ground to become a leader in the global crypto economy.

Battlefield 6 Battle Royale: Touching Ring Is Insta-Kill, 100-Player Matches, Destruction, More Revealed

by admin September 11, 2025

Battlefield Studios has shared lots more official information about Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode, including match sizes, gameplay systems, and how the game has the “deadliest ring” in the genre. Battlefield Studios will allow people to try the battle royale mode before it is released through the Battlefield Labs testing program, so be sure to sign up for a chance to play early.

“We see a great opportunity to infuse the core Battlefield pillars of class-based squadplay, tactical destruction, and vehicle combat into the battle royale genre to create a high-stakes and adrenaline pumping gameplay experience,” the developer said. “This is Battlefield’s twist on the classic formula, so you can expect to find all of the core principles of Battlefield taking place within this mode; gadgets, explosives, destructible environments, and vehicles can all be used to secure the win.”

A sneak peek at the Battlefield 6 battle royale map.

Battlefield 6’s battle royale map, which doesn’t have an official name yet, was built specifically for battle royale, the developer said, and it will feature a “diverse array” of points of interest that provide “unique gameplay opportunities.”

The mode will have vehicles, too, including “common” transport vehicles and “powerful armored vehicles to turn the tide of battle.” Battlefield Studios said the goal is to “offer more ways for players to traverse the map early on in a match and to create interesting combined arms action in the process.” The battle royale mode will also carry forward Battlefield’s trademark destruction elements, allowing people to blast down walls to gain the advantage.

“We look forward to seeing players’ ingenuity with destruction and how they use it to defeat their opponents,” the developer said. In this new battle royale test, matches will be composed of 100 players, divided into 25 four-player squads. The goal, as you might have guessed, is to be the last squad alive. Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode also supports “second chances,” as Support class players can revive downed allies, while the game also has “Mobile Redeploy” options to stay alive longer.

In terms of what Battlefield Studios is calling the “deadliest ring in BR,” the studio said the ring will instantly kill players upon contact. In other games, including Call of Duty: Warzone, you can survive outside the ring for a period of time. “With urgent warnings as the fire approaches, soldiers will be pushed into more intense firefights as the game space continues to shrink,” the developer said. “There’s no jumping in and out of it, no using it for cover, no walking through it–if you get caught in it, you are done. We’re excited to see how the ring affects the pace of the game and how it creates spontaneous showdowns.”

Battlefield’s class system will carry forward to battle royale, so players can pick a class and assemble a team however they see fit between the Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon classes. Once a match begins, however, players cannot change their class for the duration of the match.

Each class gets two default gadgets from their chosen class to begin a match, and then during matches, players earn XP by defeating players and completing missions. Each class has a “Training” element to it as well, and as players level up their Training, they’ll get new traits that “enhance” a given class. “One example would be the Assault class being faster in equipping an armor plate which makes them harder to defeat in their next (or current) firefight,” the developer said.

In terms of weapons and items, there are five tiers of weapons to loot, as well as attachments, throwable items like frag grenades, gadgets, strike packages, armor, upgrade kits, and “custom drops of favorited weapons.”

“These items can be found across the experience through general loot crates, class-specific crates, unlocking armored trucks, mission rewards, or looting defeated enemies,” Battlefield Studios said.

Battlefield 6 battle royale matches will also include “Missions” that squads can work together to complete for extra rewards. “Tasks range from unlocking high-value caches to planting explosives to eliminate mission-critical targets. Mission details will outline the available rewards like a weapons cache, vehicle key, or Mobile Redeploy unit, leaving it up to each squad to decide if the risk is worth the potential reward,” the developer said. “Once the mission objective is complete, rewards are airdropped in, so squads should stay alert for others who may attempt to steal them.”

The upcoming Battlefield Labs test for the battle royale mode requires players to sign an NDA and agree to not share gameplay footage, but if history is any indication, there will be lots of leaks.

Battlefield 6 launches on October 10 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There is no word yet when the battle royale mode could be released, or if it’s a premium game that’s part of Battlefield or a standalone download.

Overwatch 2 will overhaul its progression systems to show more visual flair in matches

by admin August 26, 2025

The next season of Overwatch 2 will bring more than the usual new hero and battle pass to the team shooter. Blizzard announced that Season 18 will introduce a new take on the progression system. As they currently stand, the progression numbers feel pretty divorced from the gameplay; this revamp introduces new ways to display your prowess to teammates and foes in matches as well as some welcome changes to how you see and equip your rewards.

The new Progression 2.0 system has overhauled the visual side. For starters, there will be new portrait frames that increase in fanciness every 20 levels, capping at level 60. These Ascended borders will be displayed when you pick your hero for a match. Between the different Ascended frames, players will unlock five tiers of hero badges that also display in Hero Select under your portrait.

In addition to the new flash, the Hero Select screen will show your allies a card with your top heroes on it. I doubt anyone will pay too much attention to cards in the Open Queue matches, so this seems like a Competitive-angled addition. It could help make it easy to build a team composition based on the whole group’s strengths, creating a test of your crew’s cooperation ability before the game even starts. Blizzard clarified that in Competitive, opponents won’t be able to see your portrait borders until 10-15 seconds after a match begins, and hero cards won’t be displayed to an enemy until one of you eliminates each other. That means nobody should be able to use your hero card against you in the ban phase.

I’ve almost never thought about the rewards I get for progression stats because it’s unclear when I’ve gotten a new item and I rarely bother searching for them in my cosmetics collections, so having a dedicated progression menu added should place a new focus on tracking how far you’ve gotten with a particular character. The hero-specific rewards on the horizon will be displayed on that page, and already-unlocked items can be equipped directly from that menu. Blizzard is also offering occasional Epic and Legendary loot box freebies as you rise through the ranks for each hero, which is always welcome.

The progression levels will be rewarded retroactively when the season starts. For long-time fans, that means you can expect to see a whole bunch of rewards to browse through when you first log in during Season 18. For new players, there will be more credits and cosmetics available to unlock in the first 20 levels. That first set of 20 levels will also be scaled to be quicker to complete, while later levels will require more time.

The new season kicks off tomorrow, on August 26. Season 18 will also bring a new option for keyboard and mouse controls on console and the permanent addition of watery support hero Wuyang.

AI Now Matches Prediction Markets in Forecasting Real Events, Study Finds

by admin August 21, 2025

In brief

  • Prophet Arena tests AI models by having them predict real-world, unresolved events, with GPT-5 currently leading the rankings.
  • AI models show distinct prediction “personalities” and often diverge from market consensus, sometimes generating high returns.
  • Early results suggest AI can forecast as accurately as prediction markets, potentially transforming institutional decision-making.

A new artificial intelligence benchmark launched in August shows that AI models can forecast real-world events as accurately as prediction markets—and sometimes better, according to researchers at the University of Chicago’s SIGMA Lab.

Prophet Arena evaluates AI systems by having them predict the outcomes of live, unresolved events drawn from platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket—ranging from election results to sports matches and economic indicators. Unlike traditional benchmarks that test models on historical data with known answers, Prophet Arena tests AI against future predictions.

“By anchoring evaluations in unresolved, real-world events, Prophet Arena ensures a level playing field. There is no pre-training advantage, no secret fine-tuning trick, no leakage of test samples,” the Prophet Arena team said in the benchmark’s official blog post.

The benchmark says it is trying to address a fundamental question about artificial intelligence: “Can AI systems reliably predict the future by connecting the dots across existing real-world information?”

Early results suggest they can. GPT-5 currently leads the leaderboard with a Brier score of 82.21%. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s o3-mini model has emerged as the profit champion, generating the highest average returns when its predictions are translated into simulated bets (usually an underdog with enough chances to win can provide a lot more return, given the proper conditions).

DeepSeek R1 appears to be the contrarian AI in the group, frequently making predictions that diverge sharply from both other models and market consensus, so probably not the best model to trust if you want to make a quick buck on Myriad Markets.

The platform reveals distinct “personalities” among AI models when facing identical information. In one example, when predicting whether AI regulation would become federal law before 2026, the market assigned just a 25% probability. But the models diverged wildly: Qwen 3 predicted 75%, GPT-4.1 estimated 60%, while Llama 4 Maverick stayed conservative at 35%.

In another case, o3-mini earned a simulated $9 return on a $1 bet by correctly predicting Toronto FC would beat San Diego FC in a Major League Soccer match. The model gave Toronto a 30% chance of winning, while the market priced it at just 11%. Toronto won.

“(Prophet Arena) tests models’ forecasting capability, a high form of intelligence that demands a broad range of capabilities, including understanding existing information and news sources, reasoning under uncertainty, and making time-sensitive predictions about unfolding events,” the researchers wrote.

The Prophet Arena also enables human-AI collaboration. Users can supply additional news and context to see how predictions shift, while AI models provide detailed rationales for their forecasts.

As prediction markets themselves integrate AI—Kalshi recently partnered with Elon Musk’s Grok, while Polymarket generates AI-powered market summaries—Prophet Arena offers the first systematic comparison of machine forecasting against collective human judgment.

And, if they get really good at it, then machines can be purely factual, with no sentiments or emotions playing a role in the decisions. They could potentially match or exceed the wisdom of crowds, changing the way institutions approach risk assessment, investment decisions, and strategic planning.

The Prophet Arena platform continues updating daily as events resolve, providing an evolving picture of whether artificial intelligence can truly predict the future by connecting today’s dots.
