Lego Fortnite Expeditions is a mission-based PvE mode where you’re up against an evil mask maker

by admin June 18, 2025

Lego Fortnite Expeditions’ existence isn’t much of a mystery given all the teasing Epic’s been giving it on social media recently, but the teasing has now made way for a full reveal. And what is it? Expeditions, it turns out, is a mission-based PvE mode where players join forces to thwart the nefarious plans of an evil mask maker. As for the when, it’s out this week.

Those wishing to embark on an Expeditions adventure will be enrolled in the Supernova Academy, where they’ll hang out with other players, chat with members of the faculty (including founder Vengeance Jones), and take on co-op missions pitting them against Mask Maker Daigo’s minions – which include sentient crystals, demon guards, and formidable Titans.

These missions whisk players (and as many as three friends) to key locations around the world map, including Utopia City, Spire Excavation Site, and Busted Bridge, with more – such as Demon’s Domain, where Daigo resides – coming after launch. As for what you’ll be doing out in the field, there’s talk of rescuing civilians, setting up comm relays, and deploying field generators, all while fending off waves of enemies – and if players can find moment to explore amid the chaos, they might uncover useful resources, currency, gear, and more.

To aid in their adventures, players can switch between three distinct classes at will, each with their own XP-based skills trees. Shadow Caller, for instance, can summon projectiles that heal or deal damage; The Hunter is all about inflicting massive damage to a single target, while Rift Rippers can use their rift abilities against either single or multiple foes. Players can also randomly acquire gadgets and weapons – including Plasma Pistols, Dual Daggers, and the War Hammer – by spending Essence found during missions back at the academy.

As missions are completed, they’ll contribute to global goals known as Team Projects, and Epic also mentions Academy Assignments, additional objectives players can pick up from faculty members and tackle during their downtime.

Lego Fortnite Expeditions comes to all versions of Fortnite on 18th June, and can be accessed via the Battle Bus in either Odyssey or Brick Life modes. Additionally, Expeditions monsters will begin infiltrating Odyssey in July (hero classes will follow, according to Epic), and players can start crafting Expeditions weapons in preparation soon.

Barbie, Hot Wheels Toy Maker to Use OpenAI Tech to Boost Productivity

by admin June 13, 2025

In brief

  • Mattel has partnered with OpenAI to launch AI-powered products later this year.
  • The collaboration marks OpenAI’s first major move into consumer entertainment.
  • Safety, privacy, and age-appropriate design are central to the deal, Mattel says.

Toy giant Mattel announced Thursday it will team up with artificial intelligence giant OpenAI to create the first AI-powered products from a major toy company, marking OpenAI’s expansion beyond enterprise software into consumer entertainment.

The collaboration will use OpenAI’s technology to develop new products for Mattel’s brands, with the companies’ first AI-powered product expected to be announced later this year, as per an OpenAI statement.

The deal also includes deploying ChatGPT Enterprise across Mattel’s business operations to enhance product development and creative processes.

It comes as AI continues to expand into consumer products, and could shape how children interact with toys in the future.

It also positions OpenAI to tap into Mattel’s growing entertainment empire, which includes upcoming films based on Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, and other franchises.

Decrypt has approached Mattel for further comment and will update this story if the company responds.

The technology could result in digital assistants based on Mattel characters or make traditional games like Magic 8 Ball and Uno more interactive, according to a Bloomberg interview with executives from both companies.

“Each of our products and experiences is designed to inspire fans, entertain audiences, and enrich lives through play,” Josh Silverman, Mattel’s chief franchise officer, said in a statement. “AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways.”

Silverman described the first product as spanning “across the spectrum of physical products and some experiences” but did not provide any specifics.

An AI on child safety

Safety and privacy concerns are significant to the deal, given Mattel’s young customer base.

“As a central part of this collaboration, Mattel and OpenAI will emphasize safety, privacy, and security in the products and experiences that come to market,” Mattel said in a statement, noting the importance of age-appropriate play experiences.

Mattel retains full control over its intellectual property and product development, with Silverman noting the company is not licensing its brands to OpenAI. Initial discussions between the companies began late last year.

“With OpenAI, Mattel has access to an advanced set of AI capabilities alongside new tools to enable productivity, creativity, and company-wide transformation at scale,” said Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer.

The announcement comes as OpenAI continues expanding across industries.

OpenAI has also struck big league partnerships with Microsoft for cloud computing services and Apple for integrating ChatGPT into iOS devices, while also securing content licensing deals with major news publishers, including The Associated Press.

The company dominated last month, with ChatGPT handling 80% of all generative AI traffic, resulting in 5.5 billion visits, significantly outperforming other AI models.

Bored Ape Yacht Club Maker Sells Moonbirds IP to Gaming Startup

by admin May 30, 2025

In brief

  • Gaming startup Orange Cap Games acquired the Moonbirds NFT IP from Yuga Labs.
  • Bored Ape Yacht Club creator Yuga Labs acquired Moonbirds and creator Proof in early 2024.
  • Yuga Labs also recently parted with the CryptoPunks and Meebits IP as it refocuses on Bored Ape projects.

Yuga Labs is serious about refocusing on the Bored Ape Yacht Club, the Otherside metaverse game, and related projects.

On Friday, the crypto startup said that it had sold off yet another previously acquired NFT project IP, dumping the Moonbirds property that it purchased just over a year ago.

The buyer is Orange Cap Games, a young gaming startup that builds digital and physical trading card games. The firm’s first game, the Pudgy Penguins-themed Vibes TCG, launched on Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract.

Moonbirds has been acquired by @ocapgames

— Garga.eth (Greg Solano) (@CryptoGarga) May 30, 2025

“Spencer [Gordon-Sand, CEO] and the team at Orange Cap Games are among the smartest, most detail-oriented builders in consumer crypto,” Yuga Labs co-founder and CEO Greg “Garga” Solano wrote on X. “Moonbirds deserve a team whose whole world is the birds, and there’s no one better than Orange Cap Games to help them reach their potential.”

Orange Cap Games has yet to share concrete plans for the Moonbirds IP and associated Mythics and Oddities collections. However, in an X post, the studio said that any future on-chain assets tied to Moonbirds will either be minted on a layer-1 chain or on the Yuga-linked ApeChain, an Ethereum layer-2 network.

Additionally, Moonbirds characters will still come to Yuga’s long-in-the-works Otherside game.

Terms of the deal were not announced. Decrypt reached out to both Yuga Labs and Orange Cap Games seeking that information, but did not immediately receive a response.

Already this year, Yuga Labs has parted ways with the CryptoPunks and Meebits IP that it acquired from Larva Labs in 2022. The Meebits IP was sold in February to a new startup, The Meebit Company, while the nonprofit Infinite Node Foundation picked up the influential CryptoPunks IP earlier this month.

The original Moonbirds NFT collection was launched on Ethereum in April 2022, with immense demand generating $280 million worth of primary and secondary sales in the initial weekend.

Original creator Proof, led by Digg co-founder and venture capitalist Kevin Rose, raised some $60 million in funding after the mint to create a crypto ecosystem of content, assets, and events. However, as the NFT market collapsed into late 2022 and throughout 2023, the firm faced increasing pushback from collectors.

Yuga Labs ultimately acquired Proof and the Moonbirds IP in February 2024, with Rose becoming an advisor to the Bored Ape maker as part of the deal.

Apple buys the maker of Sneaky Sasquatch

by admin May 27, 2025

Apple has bought a game studio for the first time. Digital Trends reported on Tuesday that the company has scooped up RAC7. The two-person team is behind the Apple Arcade hit Sneaky Sasquatch.

For years, some investors have hoped Apple would apply its full clout to the gaming industry. Although recent years have seen the launches of Apple Arcade and Game Mode for Macs, there’s still untapped potential. Another piece of news on Tuesday makes it easier to speculate that something is brewing. Bloomberg reported that the company will launch a revamped gaming app at WWDC. The new app is said to replace the oft-forgotten Game Center.

However, Giovanni Colantonio of Digital Trends suggests the acquisition isn’t necessarily a sign of what’s to come. He notes that Apple described the RAC7 purchase as a unique situation to help the small studio grow. “We will continue to deliver a great experience for Apple Arcade players with hundreds of games from many of the best game developers in the world,” Apple told the publication.

Sneaky Sasquatch was a launch title for Apple Arcade in 2019. Engadget’s Devindra Hardawar described it as an example of how the service can let developers “cut loose and get weird.” And weird, it is. (Delightfully so!) You play as the mythic Bigfoot, tiptoeing around a forest. What starts as a quirky stealth game takes even stranger turns. As you progress, you’ll learn to drive cars, disguise yourself as a human and hit the slopes.

Over five years later, the quirky title is still one of Apple Arcade’s tentpole games. It sits alongside favorites like Katamari Damacy Rolling Live, Skate City: New York and Threes! And we can’t forget one of Engadget’s all-time favorite games, Balatro. The “almost perfect” port of the deck-building game hit the service last year.

Top Chinese memory maker expected to abandon DDR4 manufacturing at the behest of Beijing

by admin May 27, 2025

Top Chinese DRAM manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) will reportedly phase out DDR4 memory for servers and PCs by the middle of next year. According to Digitimes, the company is making this sudden shift to accommodate the directives of the Chinese Communist Party, especially as Beijing is pushing the country to take the global lead in AI and cloud infrastructure. In line with this, CXMT is also believed to be prioritizing work on HBM technology, targeting validation of its HBM3 chips by late this year.

This announcement caught many in the industry off guard, especially as the company had just begun mass production of DDR4 memory in late 2024. This ramp-up in capacity, paired with aggressive pricing, has caused leading memory manufacturers Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix to end production of DDR3 and DDR4 chips by late 2025.

But as the Chinese government focuses on AI to compete against the U.S.’s technological supremacy, Beijing is likely directing its local tech giants to give their support. Because of this, industry analysts anticipate CXMT issuing an end-of-life notice for its DDR4 as early as the third quarter of this year. Despite that, DD4 supply has seemingly dried up, with some 8 GB chips jumping in price by 150% because of the lack of supply.

You may like

The overall market is heading towards DDR5 production to accommodate the demand for newer devices, but a few DDR4 manufacturing lines will remain. DigiTimes Asia says that CXMT will keep making it for GigaDevice to satisfy demand for consumer memory, while Samsung and SK hynix will keep on producing them using 1z-nm nodes. That means they do not require EUV tools, which are better utilized to produce newer chips.

Despite CXMT’s success in DDR4 memory, its DDR5 chips reportedly still face some issues. It’s been reported that some of its latest samples have failed some tests, with the memory chips becoming unstable when they hit 60 degrees Celsius and up, some 25 degrees lower than the up to 85 degrees Celsius that Samsung chips can operate in. There’s also doubt whether CXMT’s DDR5 memory would perform as expected in sub-zero temperatures. This likely would not be an issue with most users, though.

Sonic Labs announces GSR as the official market maker for S

Sonic Labs announces GSR as the official market maker for S

by admin May 23, 2025

Sonic Labs has picked crypto capital markets firm GSR as the official market maker partner for Sonic blockchain’s native token.

GSR will help Sonic (S) token gain market traction by delivering deep liquidity and strategic guidance, the Sonic Labs team said in an announcement.

As well as becoming the official market maker partner, GSR, a trading firm founded in 2013 and regulated by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority, will offer full-stack support for S.

The partnership targets the broader decentralized finance, with GSR set to offer support to early-stage projects building within Sonic’s DeFi ecosystem. Sonic Labs says GSR’s emphasis on transparency is key to this collaboration.

“In today’s market, we look for more than just liquidity providers,” said Michael Kong, chief executive officer of Sonic Labs. “We seek partners who are embedded in the network, contribute to DeFi, engage with projects directly, support global community events, and keep open, proactive communication. GSR exemplifies this standard.”

Sonic Labs launched the mainnet of Sonic in December 2024, with the S token and transition from Fantom’s FTM token happening at a 1:1 swap in early 2025. The layer-1 blockchain offers Ethereum Virtual Machine compatibility, verifiable 10,000 transactions per second and sub-second finality.

Meanwhile, GSR’s footprint in the digital asset market includes over-the-counter trading, derivatives and market making. The firm is also a multi-stage investor. Its latest portfolio investments include Sei, The Open Network and Ethena, the synthetic dollar protocol on Ethereum.

In a comment on the partnership with Sonic Labs, GSR head of U.S. business development Alex Taaffe said:

“At GSR, our role goes beyond trading, we’re here to help teams scale and build what’s next. We support innovative protocols with liquidity, helping founders get tokens market-ready, and encourage sustainable on-chain activity to drive long-term growth. Sonic’s speed, infrastructure, and community-first approach stand out in a meaningful way.”
