Borderlands 4 Finally Introduces Harlowe, The Team’s Own Mad Scientist

by admin August 24, 2025

The Borderlands series is well known for many things, including its emphasis on co-op, unique visual style, and humor, but it is also quite famous for its distinct player characters, who often use advanced tech or psychic superpowers to lay waste to enemies. Harlowe, one of Borderlands 4’s new playable characters, is no different, and Gearbox has finally provided some insight into how they play.

Harlowe has a bunch of toys at their disposal considering their past as a combat scientist for Maliwan, one of the Borderlands universe’s weapons manufacturers. They seem to be particularly great at using this high-tech weaponry for crowd control, often debuffing or straight up incapacitating enemies to create advantages for themself and their team.

For example, one of Harlowe’s main abilities is the Chroma Accelerator, which fires an unstable ball of energy that drifts forward and plows through crowds, all the while dealing cryo damage to anyone it floats past. Harlowe players can also detonate it an anytime to deal radiation damage or seemingly wait for it to burst on impact. This skill can be further upgraded to bounce haphazardly between enemies, store damage overtime to be dealt when it eventually explodes, and it can even be given a greater gravitational pull.

Harlowe can also throw out a flux generator that emits an freezing energy field, and enemies that are caught in it are also entangled. This means that other enemies with the same debuff share weapon and skill damage dealt to them, like a chain effect. Additionally, it can gain a slew of new properties, including a greater radius, secondary area-of-effect triggers, and can even be used to simultaneously buff teammates and debuff enemies.

Harlowe’s flashiest tool appears to be their Zero-Point ability, which suspends enemies in mid-air via a colorful, high-tech bubble. They can fire upon enemies trapped in them, but they can also press the action skill button again to slam these foes in whatever direction Harlowe is facing, which sounds like something I may never tire of. It can also be upgraded to provide healing to Harlowe or their teammates, attract ricocheting bullets to suspended enemies, or create a singularity and subsequent cryo explosion upon slamming an opponent in a bubble.

If you want to start planning your Harlowe builds, there is already a preview of their skill trees available, but you also won’t have to wait too long to play the game for yourself. After all, Borderlands 4 is releasing on September 12 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Switch 2 port coming about a month later on October 3.

‘Gachiakuta’ is Mad as Hell and Ready to Trash Everything

by admin June 9, 2025

Summer is here, and that means there’s new anime for the season. For the shonen heads, there’s returning fan favorites like Dan Da Dan and Kaiju No. 8, plus a new show by the name of Gachiakuta dropping next month.

Based on Kei Urana’s ongoing manga, the series stars Rudo Surebec, a teenager living in the slums of the Sphere who comes home to find his foster dad dead. Charged and found guilty of murder, he’s condemned to The Pit, a massive dump site below town that’s home to criminals and anything else considered trash by the Sphere’s wealthy class. A man named Enjin rescues Rudo and invites him to join the Cleaners, a group of people who create weapons out of objects they imbue with their power and use them to hunt monsters made of literal trash.

Rudo joins up with the Cleaners, mainly because he has dreams of making it back topside to get revenge on the Sphereites who dumped him to the surface. Gachiakuta is developed by Studio Bones, which helmed My Hero Academia and its current Vigilantes spinoff, and the contrast between the two shonen is so sharp. Rudo is so much more angrier than Deku, the pivot (and equally furious social commentary) may be enough to entice viewers to see what Bones does with darker material.

Gachiakuta premieres Sunday, July 6 on Crunchyroll, with respective opening and ending themes by Paledusk (“HUGs”) and Dustcell (“Tomoshibi”). Global premiere events with advance screenings will be held before then on July 4 and 5 in several locations, including the US, Japan, and Brazil. You can find the locations here.

Is She Really Mad at Me? Maybe ChatGPT Knows

by admin May 19, 2025

Kate’s real-life therapist is not a fan of her ChatGPT use. “She’s like, ‘Kate, promise me you’ll never do that again. The last thing that you need is more tools to analyze at your fingertips. What you need is to sit with your discomfort, feel it, recognize why you feel it.’”

A spokesperson for OpenAI, Taya Christianson, told WIRED that ChatGPT is designed to be a factual, neutral, and safety-minded general-purpose tool. It is not, Christianson said, a substitute for working with a mental health professional. Christianson directed WIRED to a blog post citing a collaboration between the company and MIT Media Lab to study “how AI use that involves emotional engagement—what we call affective use—can impact users’ well-being.”

For Kate, ChatGPT is a sounding board without any needs, schedule, obligations, or problems of its own. She has good friends, and a sister she’s close with, but it’s not the same. “If I were texting them the amount of times I was prompting ChatGPT, I’d blow up their phone,” she says. “It wouldn’t really be fair. I don’t need to feel shame around blowing up ChatGPT with my asks, my emotional needs.”

“I was just like, hey, did she break up with me?”

Andrew, who uses ChatGPT to navigate relationships.

Andrew, a 36-year-old man living in Seattle, has increasingly turned to ChatGPT for personal needs after a tough chapter with his family. While he doesn’t treat his ChatGPT use “like a dirty secret,” he’s also not especially forthcoming about it. “I haven’t had a lot of success finding a therapist that I mesh with,” he says. “And not that ChatGPT by any stretch is a true replacement for a therapist, but to be perfectly honest, sometimes you just need someone to talk to about something sitting right on the front of your brain.”

Andrew had previously used ChatGPT for mundane tasks like meal planning or book summaries. The day before Valentine’s Day, his then girlfriend broke up with him via text message. At first, he wasn’t completely sure he’d been dumped. “I think between us there was just always kind of a disconnect in the way we communicated,” he says. The text “didn’t actually say, ‘Hey, I’m breaking up with you’ in any clear way.”

Puzzled, he plugged the message into ChatGPT. “I was just like, hey, did she break up with me? Can you help me understand what’s going on?” ChatGPT didn’t offer much clarity. “I guess it was maybe validating, because it was just as confused as I was.”

Andrew has group chats with close friends that he would typically turn to in order to talk through his problems, but he didn’t want to burden them. “Maybe they don’t need to hear Andrew’s whining about his crappy dating life,” he says. “I’m kind of using this as a way to kick the tires on the conversation before I really kind of get ready to go out and ask my friends about a certain situation.”

“If I were texting them the amount of times I was prompting ChatGPT, I’d blow up their phone.”

Kate, a ChatGPT user

In addition to the emotional and social complexities of working out problems via AI, the level of intimate information some users are feeding to ChatGPT raises serious privacy concerns. Should chats ever be leaked, or if people’s data is used in an unethical way, it’s more than just passwords or emails on the line.

“I have honestly thought about it,” Kate says, when asked why she trusts the service with private details of her life. “Oh my God, if someone just saw my prompt history—you could draw crazy assumptions around who you are, what you worry about, or whatever else.”
