Nintendo Doesn’t Care About Donkey Kong Lore & That’s Great

by admin June 19, 2025

During today’s Donkey Kong Bananza Direct, it was officially revealed that DK’s sidekick throughout the adventure is a young version of Pauline. That’s fun! Now let’s check the internet to see how people are reacting to the Direct… oh…oh no. Way too many of you care about Donkey Kong/Mario lore! That’s weird, because Nintendo don’t give a shit about any of that stuff and that’s wonderful.

Princess Peach’s Leading Role And More New Releases

Donkey Kong Bananza launches next month. On Wednesday, Nintendo shared a 15-minute Direct all about the game. As a result, I’m very excited to play Bananza. It looks awesome, letting DK punch and destroy everything. It also co-stars a young Pauline, who is DK’s companion in the game, riding on his shoulder and using her singing ability to help the big ape solve puzzles and destroy more stuff. I think that inclusion alone wouldn’t have broken too many people’s brains, but at one point in the Direct we briefly see Donkey Kong and young Pauline interact with Cranky Kong. And that has caused chaos among Nintendo lore nerds.

The “problem” is that in past games, Cranky Kong has been implied to be the original Donkey Kong who kidnapped an adult Pauline during the events of 1981’s Donkey Kong arcade game. So seeing Pauline as a child hanging out with an aged Cranky Kong makes it hard for wiki editors and super fans to figure out how to connect Bananza to the other Mario and Donkey Kong games.

Over on YouTube, there are literally hundreds of comments from many people debating how to make the lore work.

Some speculate that Bananza is retconning the original game. Others hypothesize there might be some time travel. Gamespot postulates it could be a multiverse situation (though the writer acknowledges they might be overthinking all of this). Some DK / Mario purists are denouncing the game as non-canonical. Some think Pauline is actually Pauline’s daughter. Still others are expecting this to be a prequel to Super Mario Odyssey, and it will reveal the origins of New Donk City, where we meet an adult Mayor Pauline.

A huge YouTube comment about DK lore. Screenshot: YouTube / Kotaku

I found one YouTube comment that was over 1,300 words long and dug deep into the canonical Mario and Donkey Kong games and Bananza’s place in that timeline and the problems it creates.

How A Young Pauline Can Meet Cranky Kong In Bananza

I want to help you all. So, here’s the answer you’ve been looking for. Here’s why and how Pauline, as a kid, is talking to Cranky Kong. You ready? Here you go: Nintendo doesn’t care about lore and just wants to make fun games. That’s it. Simple as that.

And honestly, that’s so nice. I love it so much. Truly, Nintendo devs couldn’t care less about canon, timelines, and Donkey Kong lore. They just make great games that make you smile. The company doesn’t let decades of backstory impede its ability to be creative and do new things. Pauline is a kid in this game because the people making Bananza thought it would be a fun idea, and Nintendo agreed.

Besides, the Donkey Kong lore is a mess anyway. Cranky Kong’s appearance in the Direct is seen by many as a smoking gun that reveals Bananza to be a reboot or a time travel story. But on the Mario Wiki page for Cranky, you’ll find a nearly 800-word section about how his connection to Donkey Kong has never been consistent. Sometimes he’s DK’s grandpa, sometimes he’s DK’s dad, sometimes he might not even be related. Sometimes Nintendo has acknowledged this nonsense; other times, they just treat the current Donkey Kong as the sole big ape that long ago kidnapped Pauline. None of this has ever been nailed down consistently, and acting like it has is silly!

Look, I get it. I love Star Wars lore. I get nerdy about it, too. I’m not trying to say people can’t have fun. But far too many of the comments I’ve seen about this Bananza lore debate seem to be taking it far too seriously, as if Nintendo is vindictively shitting on Rare’s legacy. That doesn’t make sense considering all the references to Rare’s DK Country games included in the Direct.

The thing about lore is that it’s fun to ponder and discuss, but it should never be allowed to completely derail anyone’s ability to tell a new story or make something cool with classic characters. Donkey Kong Bananza seems like a blast. Don’t let the lore get in the way of that.

Love and Deepspace’s latest update introduces a new story for Rafayel, making him the first character to get a third Myth lore drop

by admin June 17, 2025

Today marks the start of a major new Memory Pair event in Love and Deepspace, the mobile dating sim people can’t stop talking about. The new event is called Submerged Eclipse, kicks off today, and will be available until July 1.

That’s a pretty lengthy runtime for a limited-time event, but there’s plenty of new content to unlock in this one, especially for fans of Rafayel.

Submerged Eclipse tells a story about the Sea God and his bride, and marks the debut of Rafayel’s Lemurian Sea God Companion form. In case you haven’t already caught on, this one is all about Rafayel.

This is the third Myth pair for Rafayel, who is now the first character in Love and Deepspace to get a third Myth dedicated to them. Until now, each character got a Myth pair as part of the standard banner, and another one in a limited-time event.

Since all existing characters already have two Myths, Love and Deepspace fans were expecting the sixth love interest character to be added soon, but it looks like the plan now includes expanding on the lore of existing characters.

Submerged Eclipse introduces two limited 5-Star Solar-slot Memories. You have Rafayel: Mistsea Descent and Rafayel: Mistsea Lament. You can get them through a special event Wish Pool, and you’re guaranteed both at 150 gacha pulls.

Rafayel’s new Companion, Lemurian Sea God, is unlocked after obtaining both. You’ll also be able to claim a new 3-Star Memory titled, Distant Prayer, as well as a 4-Star Memory Pair titled Tidefall Waves, and Tidefall Allure for free via the Merling Oath.

There’s a new combat outfit for Rafayel, too, which gives him the Lemurian Sea God look – complete with new dialogue and animations. As for the new myth, Tears of Romirro, it’s available to read in game today. It tells an original story of the Sea God and his imprisoned bride.

Beyond that, the new update also doubles the rewards for Core Hunt missions, and adds the next round of Hunter Contest (v9.1). Fans of Zayne will also find a new daily check-in campaign for the fella.

Once again, you have until Tuesday, July 1 to take part. For an idea of what you can expect, watch the video embedded above. If you’re new to his hot dating sim, we have a few resources that break down concepts like Memory Pairs for new players, and explain what banner events are and how they work. You should also definitely check out all these Love and Deepspace codes for free stuff.

Epic Universe’s Monster Lore Gives Us the Best Possible Dark Universe

by admin May 29, 2025

When you visit Epic Universe’s Dark Universe, you get hints of a story that’s so mysterious you’ll want to keep coming back to learn more. In Darkmoor Village, where monsters and humans co-exist—barely—the relationship between the villagers, the mad scientist in her castle with her monsters, and the vampires below is a very fragile menagerie of the macabre.

When io9 visited Darkmoor during Epic Universe’s opening week, we couldn’t help but wonder if the dense canon introduced would offer some insight into Universal’s abandoned Dark Universe film franchise. It turns out that some elements in the attractions, details in the land offerings, and immersive interactions echo what was once supposed to herald an Avengers-like assembly of the Universal Monsters on the big screen.

Landmarks

When you enter Darkmoor, you pass by a massive crypt where you hear Victoria Frankenstein’s assistant Ygor shuffling about with the land’s version of Frankenstein’s Monster looking for victims to use in her experiments. There’s squelching noises and creepy creature screeches, and it’s so cool to get the sense of story as soon as you walk in.

We previously covered how when you meet Frankenstein’s Monster along with the Bride, she’s not his Bride but his friend. The Monster we’re more familiar with is displayed in a glass resting place within Frankenstein Manor. However, before you get that deep into the land, you first come across the village square which features a well that at night glows blood red. The familiars in the land shared that it’s there as a monument to the dominance the vampires have on the village, and is where blood sacrifices are made to the vampire hive below in the catacombs—dark unipart of a pact to keep a balance struck between the living and the dead.

In the ride Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, you see that the original Dr. Frankenstein played a huge role in the careful and sensitive cessation of carnage, and it’s something his granddaughter fights to maintain. We also learn that Victoria Frankenstein has assembled monsters under her “control;” the last remaining one she’s trying to dominate is Dracula, but he’s playing very hard to get.

When the Dark Universe films were still in play, Alex Kurtzman, the director of the only entry that actually made it to theaters—2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise—talked about the framework that was to have anchored the planned series. In his film, Russell Crowe’s Dr. Jekyll headed up an organization devoted to keeping tabs on supernatural bad guys.

“We wanted to know that monsters existed for millennia. And we knew that as the story evolved there was going to be an organization that was maybe cataloging them, following them, collecting them,” Kurtzman explained at a December 2016 press event io9 reported on at the time. “That would determine the good ones from the bad ones. That was sort of the keeper of that secret history.”

That idea carries over into the theme park, albeit very minimally. Dr. Jekyll currently only has a brief interactive moment at his apothecary window, where you can hear him tell you to discover more monsters at the Burning Blade Tavern—and to tell the bartender Dr. Jekyll sent you. We didn’t get to try this as alcohol was not provided to press but it results in you being offered a choice between two shots: a Jekyll or Hyde one. You can guess that in Darkmoor, Jekyll might side with Victoria’s initiative, while Hyde is definitely with the monsters.

The comic-themed merch

In the panels of comics decorating Epic Universe merch (we’re waiting for real issues!) and in the Monsters Unchained ride queue, we see Victoria front and center doing just what was envisioned for the movies: cataloging, following, and collecting. So it feels like the concept for the theme park canon retained that through line. There are definitely some monsters who are more heroic than others aligning themselves with the side that will have the lowest body count.

Yet, it still mirrors the Dark Universe’s cinematic plans. In 2016, The Mummy director Kurtzman looked to the Dark Universe future at that same press event. “To me, the fun of the promise of bringing them together is that they’re probably going to fuck each other up pretty badly,” he said then. “It’s not going to be a pretty room with those guys in it. And that’s a lot more exciting than people who are going to behave nobly and predictably. It just makes it a more interesting experience, and a more interesting prospect.” And that’s pretty much what happens on the ride between Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and Dracula and his Brides (while the Phantom of the Opera plays sweet tunes on his organ).

Other pieces of merchandise that will get you other glimpses of the lore are the designs in the Dark Universe collection that depict the blueprints of Frankenstein Manor. Also, if you get transformed into a monster at the park’s Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, then run into Ygor, you’re recruited even more relentlessly than the average human to volunteer for the Frankenstein Experiment. Ygor is by far one of the most interesting walk-around characters created and really drives the lore in his interactions.

Restaurant lore

© io9 Gizmodo

When asked back in 2016 how the Dark Universe monsters would end up teaming up, Kurtzman said ideas around that were still being formulated. But most important, he said, was the question “Why would you bring them together? There has to be some kind of unifying reason if you’re going to do that.”

Dracula. Dracula is the drama. And I wonder if he was meant to be the big bad in the film universe just as much as he is the big bad in the theme park canon. When you go into the Das Stakehaus restaurant, you see the former vampire leaders of Darkmoor staked and on display atop the bar. Why? Well, Dracula felt their bending the knee to the Frankenstein family to try and co-exist to further the scientists’ agendas was an affront to their kind. (Really, the familiars have all the tea, it’s fabulous.) So the conflict is there—Dracula wants to take control back of the village for a feast, instead of letting Victoria Frankenstein continue her experiments.

Clearly, it’s an ongoing battle. Like the familiars at the restaurant, the interactive characters at the Burning Blade Tavern have even more to share. The monster hunters that hang out there motion to the monster heads on display behind the bar, including another “creature” from the Darkmoor swamplands, and be careful going in there in monster makeup.

We also got hunter knowledge as to why Dracula is barefoot with the ugliest toenails on the ride (a detail that’s going viral). Their version of why—and we are not sure if they were joking—is that allegedly it was done as a way to shame Dracula when he was captured, by taking his shoes off when he was chained. And honestly, that’s so foul I would be so mad about it too.

It’s rumored that the stories they tell of monsters they’re on the hunt for (and that we have yet to meet) are Easter eggs for future Dark Universe expansions and we hope it’s true. And it really ties in the monsters that were all floated for the cinematic universe, which included the Invisible Man (who is a roaming character at the park), Dracula, Jekyll/Hyde, the Wolfman, the Creature From the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Bride. We’d love to see a boat ride featuring the Creature some day.

Dark Universe is now open at Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida.

Indie Fallout wiki joins forces with the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages, ensuring a bright future for looking up RPG lore uninterrupted by half-page video ads

by admin May 24, 2025

The Independent Fallout Wiki and the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages (UESP) have announced a new partnership joining the two endeavors. Both sites’ curation, expansiveness, and, crucially, user experiences with minimal/unobtrusive ads make them cherished resources on the internet of 2025.

“We’re now proud to be the host of the Independent Fallout Wiki,” UESP wrote on Bluesky. “We don’t want to become one of those wikifarms that tries to trap sites, so we’ve also set things up to allow for them to freely change hosts in the future if they ever wish, without us leaving a zombie site behind.”

That last bit was a fairly direct jab at Fandom, formerly known as Wikia, the hosting service behind the majority of well-trafficked pop culture wikis on the internet. Fextralife is another prominent wiki host gamers will be familiar with, with a specific focus on RPGs and Soulslikes.

There’s a long, complicated history behind the hosting of wikis, but as a reader, it’s impossible not to notice the way their user experiences have degraded in the past ten years.

Fandom wikis tend to be saddled with enough ads that they become slow to load, particularly on mobile, with autoplay videos taking up half the screen—and that’s when they load in after a delay, partially resetting the page.

Fextralife, meanwhile, has more user-friendly pages but a serious curation/manpower issue: I’ve found incorrect information, links to missing pages, and placeholder text on its wikis years after games launch. Wikis for Pillars of Eternity, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and even explosively popular games like Elden Ring and Divinity: Original Sin 2 all have frustrating gaps in information.

These detriments allowed the more well-maintained BG3.wiki to supersede Fextralife’s pre-existing Baldur’s Gate 3 wiki, which was started at the time of early access, after the game’s 1.0 launch.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Both Fextralife and Fandom tend to dominate the search engine optimization (SEO) of properties in their portfolios (Google search: [Insert Game] Wiki), making it difficult for competitors to become visible. There’s also a legitimate question of long-term maintenance.

Many wikis turned to Fandom hosting in the first place for the stability and continuity of a large organization. For more niche games and topics, a wiki farm is insurance that a site will not be entirely abandoned if interest in the subject wanes. There’s also the question of upkeep costs for hosting such large websites.

Even still, many wikis have chosen to migrate away from Fandom in recent years, a process outlined in a Medium editorial from 2023 by Wikipedia enthusiast Linden Clayton.

A previous great migration from Fandom to the hosting service Gamepedia had an awkward ending, however, when a portion of parent company Curse was bought by Fandom in 2018, bringing the schismatic wikis back into the fold. We come full-circle back to Fallout, whose Fandom wikis seem to have had a particularly long and complicated history.

UESP, meanwhile, has been independent since 1995, and has recently expanded its offerings to include podcasts, a fan Discord, and Elder Scrolls merch drops while accepting reader support through Patreon.

UESP’s retro, no-frills interface looks much as it did when I first went there around the releases of Skyrim and Oblivion, a stalwart old friend who has survived the years unchanged. The Independent Fallout Wiki looks to be in good hands.

PCG weekend editor Jody Macgregor shouted out Bulbapedia and the Team Fortress 2 Wiki as notable independents in his recent love letter to UESP, and I’d also like to praise the Baldur’s Gate 3 Wiki one more time: It really is an amazing resource. I’ll also always carry a torch for the Souls series Wikidot wikis, even though Chrome flags them as a security risk—I still haven’t gotten a virus there yet!
