Cloud Chamber lays off “unspecified” number of staff as Rod Fergusson is parachuted in to lead troubled BioShock 4 production

by admin August 21, 2025

Update, Wednesday August 20, 2025: 2K Games has confirmed it has “reduced the size of the development team” working on BioShock 4.

Sharing an internal Cloud Chamber memo with our sister site, Eurogamer, 2K president David Ismailer told staff “we’ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work.”

“BioShock is woven deeply into the fabric of 2K,” Ismailer wrote. “It’s one of our most beloved franchises and respecting its legacy and meeting our fans’ expectations is critical to its future success.

“Work on the next BioShock game has been underway for several years. While we’re excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we’ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development.

“I know this is tough news for everyone. If your role is being affected, you’ll hear from your manager or studio leadership today with details on severance, career services and support resources. There is no easy way to do this, but we hope to do whatever we can to support you through this. I want to thank each of you for your dedication and hard work.”

“I recognise that today is a day of mixed emotions,” Ismailer concluded. “We’re excited to have Rod [Fergusson] joining us, and are equally grateful to everyone at Cloud Chamber who has helped us get this far. These changes are rooted in 2K’s firm confidence in BioShock as one of the most beloved franchises, and our commitment to deliver the best game in franchise history.”

2K did not confirm how many developers have been impacted by the cuts.

Original story:BioShock 4 developer Cloud Chamber has reportedly appointed former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson as studio head and laid off an “unspecified number of staff.”

Firaxis veteran Kelley Gilmore departed earlier this month after Take-Two Interactive reportedly overhauled parts of the upcoming BioShock and reshuffled its leadership team following a failed internal review by publisher 2K Games.

At the time, “people familiar with the situation” claimed the next entry in the BioShock series “recently failed a review by executives at 2K Games,” with the game’s narrative highlighted as needing improvement.

Now, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reports layoffs at the BioShock 4 developer as Rod Fergusson takes over as Cloud Chamber’s new studio head.

Fergusson announced his departure from Blizzard on August 8. While there’s been no formal confirmation that he has joined the BioShock production, he was similarly parachuted in to lead the troubled BioShock Infinite project, staying at Irrational just eight months before moving on.

In a post on social media, Fergusson wrote: “Would you kindly allow me to share some news? Some of you guessed it, I’m returning to 2K to lead a series that means a lot to me as the new Head of the BioShock Franchise. I’ll be heading up Cloud Chamber and overseeing development of the next BioShock game, along with franchise extensions like the in-development Netflix movie.

“While I’m excited to get started in the coming weeks, I recognize the studio restructuring is a difficult time for the team. I’m deeply grateful for the work done so far, and I’m committed to building a BioShock game we’ll be proud of and that our players will love. For now, the firehose of onboarding awaits, and I look forward to sharing more when I can.”

The fourth mainline entry in the BioShock series was confirmed to be in development at 2K Games-owned studio, Cloud Chamber, back in 2019. This upcoming entry will be the series’s first new entry since BioShock Infinite’s release in 2013.

Splitgate 2 developer 1047 Games lays off “small group of valued staff”

by admin June 21, 2025

Splitgate 2 developer 1047 Games has laid off a “small group of valued staff”.

In a statement posted to LinkedIn, the studio said that while it continues to “perfect” Splitgate 2, it was “redirecting resources to build the best game for our players”. It did not clarify just how many developers were impacted, but co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian will reportedly not be drawing salaries as the team “locks in to deliver the next phase of the project”.

Let’s Play Splitgate 2 Gameplay – SPLITGATE 2 DEBUT DAY ALPHA GAMEPLAY!Watch on YouTube

“Today we parted ways with a small group of valued 1047 Games team members. We’re still perfecting the Splitgate 2 gameplay experience in response to community feedback, and we are redirecting resources to build the best game for our players,” the statement said (thanks, XboxEra).

“We are sad to see our teammates go, and we are actively working to help them secure new opportunities. Further, our co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian have opted not to take salaries as we lock in to deliver the next phase of the project. Thank you to those who’ve built alongside us — we are sad to say goodbye and would not be here without you.

“To everyone who’s playing Splitgate 2, we’re continuing to work hard to deliver more things we know you’ll love. We are committed to building this game for the long haul.”

It’s been a tumultuous time for 1047. Last week, Proulx apologised for causing “division in the community” following his controversial Summer Game Fest appearance, in which he wore a MAGA-style “Make FPS Great Again” hat while onstage just days after the studio apologised for a $145 cosmetic, slashing the cost to $40 and refunding the difference for those that had already purchased it.

Days Gone Developer Bend Studio Lays Off Roughly 40 People

Days Gone Developer Bend Studio Lays Off Roughly 40 People

by admin June 12, 2025

Days Gone developer Bend Studio has confirmed layoffs at the company. Yesterday, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier posted on Bluesky that Bend was laying off 30% of its staff, or roughly 40 people. Later that day, Bend confirmed the news on X, stopping short of revealing how many employees had been affected.

“Today, we said goodbye to some incredibly talented teammates as we transition to our next project,” the post on X reads. “We’re deeply thankful for their contributions as they’ve shaped who we are, and their impact will always be part of our story. This is a difficult moment for our team, but we hold immense respect for everyone who got us here. As we move forward, we remain committed to building the future of Bend Studio with creativity, passion, and innovation in the titles we craft.”

Bend helped developer Climax Studios release Days Gone Remastered back in April, roughly six years after the launch of the original game. Earlier this year, PlayStation canceled two live-service multiplayer games in development, one being a game from Bend (thanks, Eurogamer). The studio is now working on a new IP.

The hearts of the Game Informer staff go out to everyone affected by these layoffs.

People Can Fly cancels two games and lays off developers

by admin June 3, 2025

People Can Fly, the developer of Outriders and Gears of War: Judgement, announced Monday that its ending development on two of its upcoming games due to issues with its publisher and an inability to secure funding to continue development. As part of this decision, People Can Fly will be forced “significantly regroup” and “scale down [its] teams,” the studio’s CEO Sebastian Wojciechowksi shared in a statement on LinkedIn.

The statement doesn’t elaborate on how many staff will be impacted by the cuts, but does call out Project Gemini and Project Bifrost as the two games being cancelled. People Can Fly made the decision to shut down Gemini because the game’s publisher failed to provide a publishing agreement and didn’t communicate “its willingness to continue or terminate the Gemini project.” Without that publishing deal or the funds to continue working on Bifrost — a self-published VR game — the studio was forced to cancel it, too.

This isn’t the first time People Can Fly has shut down a project or made cuts to its teams. In December 2024, the studio announced that it was ending development on a game called Project Victoria and also reducing the number of people working on Bifrost. In that same announcement, People Can Fly also revealed that Square Enix was publishing Gemini.

People Can Fly last worked with Square Enix to publish Outriders, somewhat of a minor cult hit now, but not a commercial success at launch. Even with the cuts and cancelled games, the studio still has multiple upcoming projects in the works, including Project Delta, which People Can Fly is creating for Sony and Gears of War: E-Day, which the studio is co-developing with Xbox studio The Coalition.

Ethereum Foundation Lays Off Some Staff Amid R&D Restructuring

by admin June 2, 2025

The Ethereum Foundation has laid off some members of its research and development team as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at refocusing on critical protocol design challenges, the organization said in a blog post Monday.

The shake-up comes as the Switzerland-based nonprofit grapples with ongoing criticism over its management and strategic direction. Some in the Ethereum community have warned for over a year that failure to address key technical hurdles could threaten Ethereum’s status as an industry leader, and the organization has already undergone leadership changes in part to address these concerns.

The foundation is rebranding its Protocol Research and Development division under the simplified name “Protocol,” and is repositioning the group around three main priorities: scaling Ethereum’s base layer, expanding blobspace (a key part of its data availability strategy), and improving user experience.

“The changes we’re announcing today are a departure from our previous ways of working, but we feel these set us on a more responsive and effective path,” the foundation said in its post.

The EF did not disclose how many staff were affected by the layoffs. “[S]ome members of PR&D won’t be continuing with the Ethereum Foundation,” the blog stated. “We hope these individuals continue on in the Ethereum ecosystem and encourage others building out their teams to seek them out.”

A spokesperson for the foundation did not respond to a request for comment.

The restructured Protocol team will serve as a hub for Ethereum’s core development efforts, aiming to improve public visibility into upgrade timelines, technical documentation, and research.

“We’re hopeful that this new structure will empower our internal teams to focus more clearly and drive key initiatives forward,” said Hsiao-Wei Weng, the co-executive director at the EF in a post on X.

Niantic Spatial lays off “small number” of employees

by admin June 1, 2025

Niantic spin-off company Niantic Spatial has announced further layoffs.

As reported by Game Developer, Niantic confirmed that a “small number” of employees had been let go from Spatial which is building a geospatial AI model.

“As a result of reorganisation of Niantic Spatial, we identified a small number of additional positions that were unfortunately no longer required in the new company.”

Game Developer spotted that five employees had been let go via a WARN notice published by the State of California’s Employment Development Department.

Niantic Spatial was previously hit with layoffs in April, when 68 employees were affected by job cuts.

This came after Scopely’s $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic. Scopely later clarified that “it will not be making any workforce reductions” in Niantic’s gaming segment following the purchase.
