Chess meets roguelike dungeon crawler Below the Crown gets an early access launch date and a demo that’s smarter than me

Am I good at chess? I’ll take no for $1500, Alex. But do I love a funky twist on games that are older than time itself? You bet your bottom dollar I do! Enter Below the Crown, a chess video game that is also a roguelike, ,and is also a turn-based strategy game, and is also a dungeon crawler on top of that. It’s a lot! It also works very well, and in a demo that just came out today (alongside an early access release date), there’s a suggestion of something a touch more… unsettling… going on under the hood.


In Below the Crown, you are a wizard who is working to get The Emperor the gold he knows is down in the dungeon below his castle. This wizard version of you places a single king on a chess board in each run, with a selection of other, occasionally remixed versions of classic pieces at your disposal. You slowly add pieces to the board as you try to strategise your way towards taking down opposing kings, adding abilities to your various pieces as you go room by room. Sometimes you’ll be offered the opportunity to buy certain useful cards too, like one that will freeze an enemy piece in place for five turns.


It’s chess! And it’s not chess. The important thing is that the essence of the age-old game is there, that feeling of thinking where you’re going to place which piece where, albeit in a refreshingly different way. Though, it definitely is a game that is smarter than me, at least when it comes to chess, because I really would like to stress I’m pants at actual chess. Still fun though! And then there’s the creepy bits.


In between rounds, you might get asked to do things like placing a marker on a graph that reads loneliness on the Y axis and anxiety on the X axis. Upon beating a run I was asked to rank my pieces based on how I felt about them, and was then questioned on my choices afterwards. Methinks there is a bit more than just retro, roguelike chess going on here, and I’m curious to find out more.


Which I’ll be able to do soonish! As developer Misfits Attic (who also made Duskers) shared that Below the Crown will be launching into early access next month, November 10th. Better keep practicing at regular chess in the meantime so I don’t totally suck at this twisted video game version of it.

Republicans Launch Inquiry into Gary Gensler’s Lost SEC Texts

House Republicans have formally notified US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins that they are investigating the loss of text messages from former SEC Chair Gary Gensler during his tenure, amid concerns over the handling of official records.

In the official letter sent by the Republicans on September 30, 2025, they said that they are working with the SEC’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) to learn more about the deleted text messages of former SEC Chair Gary Gensler.

Earlier on September 3, the SEC’s  OIG had released a report titled “Special Review: Avoidable Errors Led to the Loss of Former SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s Text Message”. According to the report, on July 6, 2023, former Chair Gensler’s “smartphone stopped communicating with the SEC’s mobile device management system.” 

Even though the phone “worked normally and was used often, the SEC’s mobile device management system thought the phone was “inactive” for 62 days. The problem was brought up many times, but OIT staff did nothing to look into or fix it.

OIT instituted a “new policy of remotely wiping any SEC mobile device that did not

communicate with the mobile device management system for at least 45 days.”

Gensler’s phone was eventually wiped on September 6, 2023, well past the policy’s 45-day threshold.

Since there had been no backup since October 18, 2022, the factory reset erased all data, including text messages. The OIG attempted to recover the messages using forensic methods but was unable to retrieve everything. To partially restore the records, SEC staff compiled a list of 34 internal contacts they believed Gensler had communicated with.

However, this list did not include other commissioners, and Gensler staff were not involved in making it. Many think that the deleted messages contained important conversations between Gensler, commissioners, senior officials, and staff that went beyond just coordinating administrative tasks.

Crypto giants vocalize criticism 

This incident has raised fresh concerns about the way agencies deal with sensitive information, especially records of high-ranking officials. Critics have also alleged that the SEC has a double standard because it has punished outside groups for breaking recordkeeping rules, but hasn’t done anything to protect its own leaders’ digital communications.

Earlier, on September 11, Coinbase had also asked a federal court in Washington to punish the regulator. The exchange said this after the OIG released its report on September 3. 

Further, Tyler Winklevoss, Co-Founder of Gemini, criticized Gary Gensler following his September 18 interview on CNBC. In the interview, Gensler highlighted that the SEC handled nearly 100 fraud cases during his tenure and emphasized his strict approach to cryptocurrency, aimed at protecting investors. Winklevoss argued that Gensler’s methods have made it more difficult for the crypto industry to grow and innovate.

Battlefield 6’s first season arrives just 18 days after launch and over two weeks before Black Ops 7

As a multiplayer game releasing in the year 2025 – and one that’s very much modelled after Call of Duty – there was very little chance Battlefield 6 wasn’t going to adopt the now-standard live service content pipeline.

But sometimes it’s good to get things in writing, which is what EA just did.

We’re about ten days away from the official launch of Battlefield 6, and this week, EA announced what its Battlefield Studios squad will deliver post launch – at least the first batch. The developer detailed Season 1, which will kick off October 28 – only 18 days post launch.

The season’s content rollout has somewhat of an unusual structure, but it’s one that looks to guarantee something new every month. Season 1 is split across three stages, each adding new content to the game.

Rogue Ops is the first one, arriving with the season’s kick-off on October 28. This phase adds a new large-scale map called Blackwell Fields, which EA says will support land, and air vehicles. The map is set in/around an airbase in the California badlands.

We’re also getting Strikepoint, a new 4v4 mode where each player gets a single life. Rogue Ops will expand the game’s content further with three weapons – the SOR-300 carbine, Mini Fix sniper rifle, and GGH-22 sidearm – as well as a new APC.

Another unusual thing about Battlefield 6’s seasons is the fact that they’re going to add new attachments for use with its weapons. In the first phase of Season 1, we’re getting the Rail Cover, and the Low Powered Variable Optic (LPVO).

California Resistance takes over on November 18 with another new map, Eastwood. This is another large map, though it only supports land vehicles, and helicopters. Eastwood is another California-set map located around a suburb and a golf course.

The new mode in this phase is Sabotage, an 8v8 affair where teams race to destroy as many sites as they can before time runs out. Teams alternate between attacking and defending each round.

California Resistance introduces the Battle Pickups feature to Battlefield 6, which are superpowered weapons anyone can pick up and use. They’re often scattered around the maps in fixed locations, but come with limited ammo.

Speaking of weapons, you can look forward to another two new arrivals: the DB-12 shotgun, and the M327 Trait revolver sidearm. The attachment pool grows with the Troy Angled grip, too.

The last stage of Season 1 arrives December 9 with Winter Offensive, which has the least amount of content compared to the other two. Rather than a new map, the game’s Empire State launch map is getting covered in ice for a limited time as part of the Ice Lock event.

The developer says the event will introduce a new mechanic called Freeze. It doesn’t explain how it’s going to work, but it does confirm that it’s a gameplay modifier, so presumably it will be available in Portal. Speaking of which, all the new content being added will also be available for use in Portal experiences.

The only weapon getting added with that last phase is the Ice Climbing Axe, which joins the game’s melee weapons roster.

More details about Season 1 will arrive closer to launch, but it’s safe to say this is a nice salvo of content to kick-start the game’s live service journey. Battlefield 6 is out October 10 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The first batch of seasonal Battlefield 6 post-release content will arrive 28th October, a few weeks after the game’s 10th October launch, EA has announced. It’ll bring new modes, new maps, new weapons, and more. And it’ll be free.

“All gameplay-impacting features will be free or earnable as part of our commitment to fair play and access for all players,” a press release says. And a blog on the game’s website has “free post launch content” emblazoned across a promotional image.

Battlefield 6 Season 1 will unfold in three phases. The first phase will arrive on 28th October and be known as Rogue Ops, and it’ll introduce a new four-versus-four mode called Strikepoint, in which you’ll only get one life per round; a new map called Blackwell Fields, which looks like an oil-field but is apparently a recommissioned American air base; three new weapons, a new APC, and some new weapon attachments.

The second phase, dubbed California Resistance, will land on 18th November, and bring a new eight-versus-eight mode called Sabotage, in which you have one round each on offence and defence, to see how many sites you can blow up; and a new Southern California map called Eastwood, which is a sleepy affluent suburb turned warzone; two new weapons and more.

The third and final phase will drop on 9th December and bring a winter-themed and limited time Ice Lock event based around a mechanic called Freeze, appropriately enough; and a seasonal update to the Empire State map.

2XKO’s closed beta seems to be going pretty well, with the tag fighter throwing open the doors to the masses on October 7. Despite executive producer Tom Cannon saying in July that “our goal is to keep the game up, online, and available” from the closed beta’s launch, it seems that Riot needs just a few days to get everything straightened out.

A post on the 2XKO X account reads: “We need a little more time to get early access up and running, so we’ll be shutting down closed beta a few days early on Oct 3 @ 9pm PT.” Servers will be back up and running in time for the early access launch on October 7 at 8am PT/11am ET/4pm BST.

Riot says that offline mode will still work, so players should still be able to hit the lab, play local multiplayer, and face off against CPUs. Three-and-a-half days to do some tinkering behind the scenes is nothing in the grand scheme of things, especially when I think about other fighting games who took their betas offline and straight-up vanished for a year—looking at you, Multiversus.

The downtime news was released alongside a trailer for 2XKO’s tenth champion, verifiable League mascot Teemo. And as someone who doesn’t play the MOBA, I finally understand all of the Teemo hate.

Riot has really leaned into the gremlin vibes here, with Teemo being an all-out terror as both a zoner and a trap character, using his signature blow darts and mushrooms to create space while also laying down grass patches that he can quickly teleport to for some solid mixups.

The trailer is steeped in self-awareness in the best possible way. Halfway through sees a fake Twitch-like chat appear with comments like “2XKO SAVED,” “this game is cooked” and various iterations of cringe/based. Riot knows of Teemo’s crimes, and is doing everything it can to lean into that.

It even ends with a reference to Evo Moment 37—one of the most iconic FGC moments that continues to haunt Justin Wong over 20 years later—which, if I wasn’t already sold on the sheer tomfoolery Teemo had been displaying in the two minutes prior to this, I certainly am now.

Crypto ETFs Suffer Worst Streak Since Launch as Bitcoin and Ethereum Record Heavy Outflows

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs experienced their worst weekly stretch since debut, as risk appetite declined and investors de-risked heading into quarter-end.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw approximately $902.5 million in net outflows for the week of Sept. 22–26, ending a four-week inflow streak. Ethereum ETFs lost about $795.6 million, marking their largest weekly redemptions since launch.

The outflows were uneven: Fidelity’s FBTC led BTC outflows, while BlackRock’s IBIT and Invesco’s BTCO defied the trend with $173.8 million and $10 million of inflows, respectively. On the ETH side, several issuers experienced large single-day withdrawals, showing how quickly flows can reverse when macro risk increases.

Macro Headwinds Keep Buyers Cautious

The reversal came as traders weighed new U.S. tariff announcements and lingering uncertainty about the Fed’s rate cuts ahead of key inflation data. Those headlines revived fears of a growth and liquidity squeeze, driving a quick reset across risk assets.

Bitcoin briefly slipped below pivotal support intraday before rebounding, while Ethereum mirrored the move with a shallow bounce. Despite the week’s pain, September still shows net inflows for Bitcoin ETFs ($2.57B), a notable improvement from August’s outflows, evidence that institutional adoption remains intact.

For now, the market’s message is clear: without a more dovish macro backdrop or cleaner inflation prints, allocators may remain selective, trimming core BTC/ETH exposure when it is strong and adding only on clear confirmations.

Alternative Crypto ETFs Take Spotlight Over Bitcoin and Ethereum

Beneath the headline of redemptions, some desks report rotations toward thematic or alternative crypto ETFs (e.g., Solana, XRP) as allocators seek uncorrelated catalysts.

That discussion overlaps with speculation about a potential BlackRock XRP spot ETF, with market models suggesting $4–$8B of first-year inflows if such a product were filed and approved. Although no filing has been confirmed, XRP’s quick settlement times and low fees keep it on institutions’ radar.

Nevertheless, the week’s outflows serve as a reminder: macro factors outweigh micro in the short term. As October progresses, focus on whether BTC funds resume steady inflows, if ETH redemptions decrease, and how upcoming inflation data influences Fed expectations.

Until these factors align positively, volatility will remain high, and ETF flow reports will continue to be the best real-time indicators of institutional confidence.

OpenAI is preparing to launch a stand-alone app for its video generation AI model Sora 2, WIRED has learned. The app, which features a vertical video feed with swipe-to-scroll navigation, appears to closely resemble TikTok—except all of the content is AI-generated. There’s a For You–style page powered by a recommendation algorithm. On the right side of the feed, a menu bar gives users the option to like, comment, or remix a video.

Users can create videoclips up to 10 seconds long using OpenAI’s next-generation video model, according to documents viewed by WIRED. There is no option to upload photos or videos from a user’s camera roll or other apps.

The Sora 2 App has an identity verification feature that allows users to confirm their likeness. If a user has verified their identity, they can use their likeness in videos. Other users can also tag them and use their likeness in clips. For example, someone could generate a video of themselves riding a roller coaster at a theme park with a friend. Users will get a notification whenever their likeness is used—even if the clip remains in draft form and is never posted, sources say.

OpenAI launched the app internally last week. So far, it’s received overwhelmingly positive feedback from employees, according to documents viewed by WIRED. Employees have been using the tool so frequently that some managers have joked it could become a drain on productivity.

OpenAI declined to comment.

OpenAI appears to be betting that the Sora 2 app will let people interact with AI-generated video in a way that fundamentally changes their experience of the technology—similar to how ChatGPT helped users realize the potential of AI-generated text. Internally, sources say, there’s also a feeling that President Trump’s on-again, off-again deal to sell TikTok’s US operations has given OpenAI a unique opportunity to launch a short-form video app—particularly one without close ties to China.

OpenAI officially launched Sora in December of last year. Initially, people could only access it via a web page, but it was soon incorporated directly into the ChatGPT app. At the time, the model was among the most state-of-the-art AI video generators, though OpenAI noted it had some limitations. For example, it didn’t seem to fully understand physics and struggled to produce realistic action scenes, especially in longer clips.

OpenAI’s Sora 2 app will compete with new AI video offerings from tech giants like Meta and Google. Last week, Meta introduced a new feed in its Meta AI app called Vibes, which is dedicated exclusively to creating and sharing short AI-generated videos. Earlier this month, Google announced that it was integrating a custom version of its latest video generation model, Veo 3, into YouTube.

TikTok, on the other hand, has taken a more cautious approach to AI-generated content. The video app recently redefined its rules around what kind of AI-generated videos it allows on the platform. It now explicitly bans AI-generated content that’s “misleading about matters of public importance or harmful to individuals.”

Oftentimes, the Sora 2 app refuses to generate videos due to copyright safeguards and other filters, sources say. OpenAI is currently fighting a series of lawsuits over alleged copyright infringements, including a high-profile case brought by The New York Times. The Times case centers on allegations that OpenAI trained its models on the paper’s copyrighted material.

OpenAI is also facing mounting criticism over child safety issues. On Monday, the company released new parental controls, including the option for parents and teenagers to link their accounts. The company also said that it is working on an age-prediction tool that could automatically route users believed to be under the age of 18 to a more restricted version of ChatGPT that doesn’t allow for romantic interactions, among other things. It is not known what age restrictions might be incorporated into the Sora 2 app.

Like the previous entries, Nioh 3 is a fast-paced third-person action RPG that moves quicker than most souls-likes. Playing as Tokugawa–whose appearance is fully customizable–you’ll fight the Yokai plaguing the land in intense combat. The main twist this time is the choice between two distinct combat styles: Samurai or Ninja. With the Samurai style, you can perform a “Ki Pulse” to regain stamina after a combo and build up an Arts Proficiency gauge that unleashes powerful finishing attacks. A new parry system has also been introduced to the gameplay.

Opting for the Ninja path grants agile, evasive techniques and faster strikes. Instead of weapon stances, you’ll wield ninja tools alongside unique abilities. Mist, for instance, creates a clone that distracts enemies, while swift dashes let you slip behind foes for lethal backstabs. Each style has its own gear, but you can switch between them on the fly to adapt in battle. Returning mechanics include guardian spirit transformations, Soul Cores, and Yokai abilities. Set in a “dark samurai world” teeming with sinister spirits, your journey will uncover hidden secrets as you march toward the calamity known as the Crucible.

If you’d like to catch up on the previous Nioh games, you can get both of them in a bundle deal for $34.80 (was $70) on PS5. This is a limited-time deal at Amazon, and the Nioh Collection includes remastered and enhanced editions of the 2017 and 2020 games. All of the previously released expansion packs for each game have also been included.

Nioh 3 isn’t the only Souls-like action RPG launching in earl 2026. Code Vein 2 will launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on January 30, 2026, and it’s priced at $70.
