Crypto Industry Urges National Stablecoin Plan For The United Kingdom To Compete With US

In a recent open letter to Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, figures from the cryptocurrency industry are calling for the United Kingdom (UK) to develop a national stablecoin strategy, seen as essential for positioning the UK at the forefront of the digital asset landscape.

This comes after the US positioned itself to capitalize on the growing adoption of digital assets through pro-crypto legislation, fulfilling President Donald Trump’s mission to establish the country as the crypto capital of the world.

UK’s Crypto Sector At Risk?

The letter, which garnered support from 30 industry players, emphasizes the need for a proactive and coordinated approach to dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies. It argues that they should not be viewed merely as potential risks but as integral components of a financial infrastructure that can be responsibly embraced. 

The letter highlights that the United Kingdom must act swiftly to ensure it remains competitive with countries like the United States, which have taken significant steps to integrate stablecoins into their financial systems with the passage of the GENIUS Act.

Industry players have voiced concerns regarding the UK’s current regulatory stance on stablecoins, suggesting that it places the nation’s crypto sector at a disadvantage. 

One of the primary issues is the legal classification of stablecoins as “crypto-assets with reference to fiat currency.” Critics argue that this definition focuses too much on the form rather than the function of stablecoins, likening it to defining a cheque solely as paper that references currency. 

The establishment of a national stablecoin strategy could enhance the UK’s status as a global financial center, they assert, and generate new revenue streams, particularly in fees and foreign exchange, while also supporting demand for government bonds.

The Key To Unlocking Stablecoin Potential

The letter received endorsements from executives and firms such as crypto exchange Coinbase, Kraken, Copper, Fireblocks, BitGo, and asset manager and crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF) issuer VanEck.

Daragh Maher, HSBC’s head of digital assets research, has highlighted the potential of stablecoins to bridge the gap between traditional finance and the digital asset world. 

He described them as the cash equivalent of digital assets, serving as a foundational currency for almost all crypto transactions. Maher also pointed out that stablecoins can facilitate money transfers using blockchain technology, offering a modern alternative for the UK financial system.

Despite their potential, regulatory hurdles remain a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of stablecoins. Maher emphasized that creating a suitable regulatory environment is crucial for unlocking the full potential of stablecoins in the UK.

You can build 136 million different houses in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s new DLC, if you really must

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s forthcoming Legacy of the Forge expansion introduces a new home customisation system, as part of a story about restoring a legendary burnt-down blacksmith’s joint where your dad once worked as an apprentice.

Out September 9th, the expansion takes Henry of Skalitz back to Kuttenberg to climb the ranks of the blacksmith guild, with unique armour and weapon blueprints. Expect “quirky” requests from clients, but above all, expect a nagging sense of failure, because the aforesaid customisation system “supports over 136 million combinations”, and always, always at the back of your mind, the creeping suspicion that yours is the very worst.

Do I sound needlessly weary? I’m sorry, I just hate when PRs do the “XX million possible combinations thing” (obligatory disclosure: I’ve probably enthusiastically written up such promises in the past). I can poke myself in the face 136 million ways while eating dinner, Warhorse – that doesn’t mean I care to do so. Nobody needs a million different versions of anything, not even the Pokemon Company.

Also, I confidently predict based on gruelling experience and the below trailer that 120 million of those combinations will be indistinguishable. It’ll be a case of moving mead cups fractionally sideways on tables to drive the chatbox crazy, you mark my words. When they release this DLC, somebody (not me) should try to make all 136 million possible houses out of spite. Then we can turn Kingdom: Come Deliverance 2 into a giant game of spot-the-difference. Or perhaps an absolutely terrible medieval version of Blue Prince.

The overabundance of house variations is more relatable when you consider that finding a safe place to sleep, rest and eat your vittles is one of Deliverance 2’s earlier challenges. There may indeed be 136 million places in pre-industrial Bohemia where it would be unsafe to sleep, even if the game permitted it.

When not building houses and fighting the sense that there are 135 million, nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine ways you could have done it better, you’ll spend the new DLC venturing “down memory lane”, seeking after friends of your dead father and uncovering a part of his life “that has remained hidden – until now.” Perhaps your dad was secretly the 15th century equivalent of Dorothy Draper.

You’ll forge new friendships alongside fancy swords, and explore the effects of different home furnishings on your abilities. It’s probably good fun, on the whole. I did quite enjoy the base game, on balance. Still, stop threatening me with large numbers, Deep Silver, I am a person of culture.

Link, in all his variations, is a hero. The sword-wielding savior of Hyrule is always doing heroic shit in every Legend of Zelda game. He’s the embodiment of courage, goes to great lengths to defeat evil in whatever form it appears, and has saved the day countless times across the series’ convoluted timeline. It’s only natural, then, that he would also embody the important virtue of respecting women. Now, thanks to the Switch 2 version of Tears of the Kingdom, we know that he does.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Tears of the Kingdom comes with a few perks not found on the original console. It looks better and runs smoother, but perhaps the most enticing thing Nintendo has added for the new system is Zelda Notes, an assortment of voice and text logs from different characters that you can read on your phone while you play. Many of them are from the princess herself, and actually do a lot to flesh out our hero, who is typically a silent protagonist. One entry has Zelda recounting the time the two went to Eventide Island, and how Link, having been there before and being stripped of his gear, expected the same to happen to Zelda, and thus covered his eyes so he wouldn’t see anything indecent. That, my friends, is a gentleman.

‪Link came along to protect me, but he suddenly covered his eyes the moment we landed. Fortunately, it seems all the monsters vanished with the Calamity… Regardless, when I asked him what he was doing, he said last time he was here, he had been stripped of…ahem…all his possessions when he arrived. He…could have mentioned that possibility before I set foot on the shore…‬

That’s my Hero of Time. Or whatever we’re calling him these days. Tears of the Kingdom is a huge game, so the prospect of going back to it feels a little daunting, even with all the Switch 2 enhancements. But I am looking forward to what other story secrets fans might find in the Zelda Notes.

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom faster on Nintendo Switch 2

On top of being the upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2 might be the best way to experience some of the previous generation’s most critically acclaimed titles.

Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom already stole our hearts with their scale, presentation, and gameplay when they were released in 2017 and 2023, respectively. Whether it’s your first time playing or your 50th, the Switch 2 editions of these titles are an absolute dream experience. Nintendo’s modern masterpieces didn’t suffer despite relatively low resolution and frame rates and slow loading times — one of the most common gripes with the games when they were released. But the Switch 2 Edition of each game feels like the upgrade the titles deserve, especially when it comes to reduced loading times. And I mean significantly reduced.

During our testing, we ran five different test cases five times, then calculated an average for each of the five trials. For the original versions of the games, we used a Switch OLED. For the Switch 2 editions of the games, we used a Switch 2.

We tested the time it takes to boot up the game from the Switch 2 home screen, a load a save file from the title screen, reload a save file, fast travel across the map, and enter a shrine. I picked these test cases because they are actions you repeat many times in a given play session, and those load times add up.

To no one’s surprise, the Switch 2 dominates the performance of the Nintendo Switch. The Switch 2 takes the load times of both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and cuts them roughly in half. In some cases, the load time has been reduced by more than half, specifically in Tears of the Kingdom. Overall, Tears of the Kingdom saw bigger performance increases on average compared to Breath of the Wild, probably because the game is just better optimized.

The Nintendo Switch 2, paired with the Switch 2 Edition of each title, offers a significant improvement to the modern Zelda experience. You can also play the original versions on Switch 2, in theory, though we have yet to test those load times.

Nonetheless, the Switch 2 editions feel more fluid and responsive. If you have yet to lose yourself in the most recent iteration of Hyrule Kingdom, there’s no better time than now — that is, if you’re willing to pay the extra $10 per game, or for a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion membership, to upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition, which is only available on Switch 2.

CDPR says the Kingdom Come style of systems-heavy RPG is ‘super great’ and, when it comes to The Witcher 4’s direction of travel, ‘these are our next steps for sure’

Yesterday brought our first proper look at The Witcher 4, thanks to a highly impressive tech demo, and the Ciri-led sequel is now CDPR’s next big thing. PCG’s Josh Wolens recently sat down with several of the studio’s core figures to discuss the series’ past and future and, with this happening around The Witcher 3’s tenth anniversary, one prominent topic was how the gaming landscape has changed over that time.

The Witcher 4 will release in a very different world from The Witcher 3, and there are several high-profile examples of studios that don’t seem to have kept pace with the times. Bioware’s Dragon Age: Veilguard, for example, was a perfectly decent RPG, but the visuals aside it was almost like a game you could’ve been playing in 2015. But then there are those games that do feel like they’re pushing the RPG forward, like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and perhaps most prominently Baldur’s Gate 3. So where is CDPR and The Witcher 4 going to find itself?

“Bioware has changed for sure, but the industry has changed too,” says CDPR co-CEO Adam Badowski. “We have a different strategy for our company. We definitely would like to continue keeping and truly understanding our core rules, how we develop our games, and of course, on top of that, we need to find new things, especially in gameplay, because there’s not such a great progress when it comes to good stories.

“So here we feel very strongly at the same time, so many great things happened in gameplay [since The Witcher 3]. What are players’ expectations here? And there are great games, great mechanics and plus UI [improvements]. So this is the idea for our development, and we are focusing on that, but at the same time we strongly believe in the core of what we are doing here.”

Badowski goes on to say that he thinks one of CDPR’s strengths is that, while The Witcher and Cyberpunk are very different worlds, at their heart are some pretty similar goals.

“So even if we have multiple games, it doesn’t mean that we are focusing on one big thing, because our games are similar when it comes to the core aspects,” says Badowski. “Of course, Cyberpunk is different from the Witcher, but different enough to feel that it’s something maybe more for me, less for you. But I think the core, the pillars, how we make games stay the same and we continue. Maybe that’s the difference, the difference between our strategy and Bioware’s strategy these days.”

To get down to brass tacks, then, what does CDPR see when it’s looking at the likes of KCD2 and BG3?

“I love Kingdom Come because of the realism and the feeling, the sense of humor,” says Badowski. Would he even say it’s a little Witcher-y?

“Thank you,” laughs Badowski, before going on to explain how some of the more simulation-y and systems-heavy aspects of KCD2 are the things CDPR watches with interest, because this is partly The Witcher 4’s direction of travel.

“The Kingdom Come kind of simulation, it’s great,” says Badowski. “There’s so many options, you can change the world, it’s super great. And we would like to keep that, we’d like to follow this trend as well. So these are our next steps for sure, and it’s kind of a similar challenge to what we have in The Witcher 3 because of the open world and storytelling here, freedom of choices. But at the same time, we would like to build very fleshy, very well-motivated characters. So it’s kind of in contradiction from time-to-time. That’s a great design challenge.”

With Larian the influence is less direct. “In Larian’s case it’s turn-based so it’s a different kind of game, and the way you interact with characters is totally different,” says Bakowski. “We like to fully build the characters, understand the past and the future of the character motivation. That’s why it takes so much time. [In BG3] there are great characters as well but sometimes your choices, because there’s freedom of choices in Larian’s work, it pushes you to use different tricks than ours. But I think we observe each other, and there are not that many games like that, so that’s natural, yeah, and we see how players react, how fans react to those tactics.”

It’s a theme that joint CEO Michał Nowakowski echoes: Baldur’s Gate 3 has clearly impressed an awful lot of people at CDPR, even if they’re conscious that The Witcher is always going to be a different type of RPG.

“I think we’re still more in the, you know, we’re a big open world,” says Nowakowski. “But a lot of what Baldur’s Gate 3 showed was an inspiration, and to be honest there’s no shame in that. I think everybody who launches games nowadays is looking back on what was done before, and is looking at what worked and what was great and how and if they can fit it into whatever they are doing.

“So for sure there was a lot of inspiration and what BG3 did, but I think we’re still more sticking to what was The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, even if we don’t want to just make another game like that, just with better graphics. We do want to innovate in terms of what’s available in terms of gameplay and so on. I hope when the time comes, that’s going to become clear for the fans as well.”

If that’s all sounding a little fuzzy, Nowakowski circles back to make it clear what CDPR is not doing:

“It’s a bit of an unclear answer, but to make it more clear, we definitely are not going to make a game like Larian did,” says Nowakowski. “That’s the kind of game they can make. But a lot of stuff with how the characters can interact with the world and what it does was for sure some inspiration to us.”
