‘Payday’ Dev Starbreeze Kills Co-Op ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Game

by admin October 4, 2025

After the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s been talk of Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast releasing more games based on Dungeons & Dragons. Bad news for fans looking forward to that: one of them, a title codenamed “Project Baxter,” has been fully canceled.

The title was in development over at Swedish developer Starbreeze, best known for the Payday franchise and 2012’s Syndicate. In a recent announcement, CEO Adolf Kristjansson said the “difficult but necessary decision” came as the studio is prioritizing a full revamp of its co-op heist franchise Payday. As such, “Baxter” development has been ended, and some of its assigned developers will be “redeployed across Starbreeze’s projects.” Others will be let go and given help by Starbreeze to find employment elsewhere.

“Baxter” was first announced in 2023, with Starbreeze at the time stating it’d feature “signature cornerstones” of its prior works like a live-service model and cooperative play. While the studio’s been quiet on it since then, the game would’ve released sometime in 2026 for “all major platforms.” Around this time in 2024, Starbreeze showed off concept art with a tease that it would show more in the near future.

Dungeons & Dragons is no stranger to live-service games: before Baldur’s Gate 3, there was a co-op-focused reboot of Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance in 2021, and its online servers shut down this past February. Wizards of the Coast, which owns D&D, also cancelled five unannounced games prior to Baldur’s release, some of which were likely D&D games. At the time of writing, a single-player action game from Giant Skull set in the D&D universe—and led by Star Wars: Jedi director Stig Asmussen—remains in development.

Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode is borrowing some of the worst aspects of Call of Duty: Warzone, but at least its ring of fire instantly kills you

by admin September 11, 2025

Battlefield Studios has officially unveiled the first details of the Battlefield 6 battle royale mode, which was first announced in August at the game’s multiplayer reveal event. At the time, the developer didn’t confirm its official name, or really discuss any of its aspects.

It did announce, however, that the mode would be coming to Battlefield Labs, the community testing environment that’s been running in the background since February. That moment has now arrived.

In a blog post, the developer revealed some key, top-level goals for Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode. It still doesn’t officially have a name, but the post essentially makes it sound like a modern version of Battlefield 5’s Firestorm battle royale mode, with some features from Call of Duty: Warzone.

Destruction will play a key role in the mode, of course, but you can also expect many of the core game’s gadgets and vehicles to be present – including ways to acquire armored vehicles for late-game situations.

Anyone who played games like PUBG, Apex Legends, or Fortnite should be very familiar with how it’s going to flow. The post confirms respawn mechanics, for instance.

That said, this iteration comes with its own interesting twists on the battle royale formula. For one, classes from the multiplayer side will be present here, with one example being the Support’s ability to revive downed teammates.

Indeed, classes in general will play a larger role than you might expect. Each member of the squad gets to choose the class they’re going to play as, just like traditional multiplayer. These choices cannot be changed after the match has begun.

Each player starts the match with two gadgets from their class, and they’re able to level up during the match to unlock new Traits (like faster armor plate equip speed) for use within the same match. Throughout the game, there’ll be ways to earn XP, such missions with a variety of goals.

Battlefield 6’s BR mode will, of course, feature an ever-encroaching ring of fire that gradually makes the playable area smaller and smaller. Unlike most BR games, however, this one will instantly kill anyone caught outside of it, eliminating any out-of-ring play.

Ground loot is present, split across five tiers of rarities. Attachments appear to be separate lootable items this time around, which is an interesting change. Outside of other, expected items, you’ll also come across Strike Packages, which are effectively killstreaks.

Unfortunately, the mode will also allow players to bring in custom weapons from multiplayer, which can be called in using an item found in loot chests and on the ground.

This particular test will focus only on four-player squads, with a maximum of 100 players in each match. It’s not clear how high the player count is going to be in the final version, but 100 is within expectations for BR modes.

Battlefield Studios promised to return later to share more after feedback has been collected, and it’s certainly going to be interesting to see how players respond to some of that.

Hollow Knight: Silksong kills it on its launch day on Steam with over half-a-million concurrent players

Hollow Knight: Silksong kills it on its launch day on Steam with over half-a-million concurrent players

by admin September 5, 2025

There was really no chance Hollow Knight: Silksong wasn’t going to be a major hit for Team Cherry; the only question was how much of a hit it was going to be. We no longer need to guess, because the game is out and everyone seems to be onboard.

Silksong has officially become one of Steam’s biggest releases of 2025, and certainly one of the most significant launches for any indie game.

Quickly after Silksong went live last night on Steam, it started shooting up Steam’s Most Played chart, overtaking heavy-hitters like Path of Exile 2 (which, incidentally, just had a major update that boosted its spot), and perennial multiplayer titles like PUBG.

Silksong had no trouble landing into the top five – and staying there. Even at the time of this writing, the game occupies the number three spot, just below DOTA 2, and Counter-Strike 2 with over 317,000 in-game.

Its peak concurrent was a staggering 535,213 players (via SteamDB), which it managed to achieve around 14 hours ago. Silksong is also, of course, Steam’s current number one top-seller, with the game and soundtrack bundle at number two. It is especially impressive that it only spent one week in the top 100, no doubt the result of its gamescom revival and subsequent release date news.

The original Hollow Knight even saw a boost off the back of that reemergence, beating its own all-time Steam concurrent player record just two days ago, as many booted up (and bought) the game in anticipation of the expansion-turned-sequel

And, just like how beloved that game was, it seems Silksong is getting the same level of love from players. As it stands, Silksong has an Overwhelmingly Positive Steam user review rating, based on nearly 16,000 reviews.

All that time spent in development has also seemingly resulted in a polished game, because there’s barely any mention of bugs or any other technical problems. Given this incredible momentum, it’s possible the weekend will boost Silksong’s numbers even further.
