Shadows of Doubt’s hilarious new modifiers let you play as a wall-crawling rat detective and evade a killer snail

by admin September 21, 2025

I didn’t think there were many ways to make Shadows of Doubt a better detective game—aside from giving the whole thing a vigorous polish. ColePowered Games’ sleuthing simulator procedurally generates an entire city’s worth of crimes to solve, somehow creating genuine deduction puzzles out of a bucketful of random numbers. Granted, it also tends to create a lot of bugs and dead ends in the process. But when Shadows of Doubt works, it’s one of the best games ever made.

Yet the latest update somehow makes Shadows of Doubt even more conceptually appealing, by letting you play as a detective who is also a rat. The modifiers update injects a bunch of optional mutations into the sim’s algorithmic genes, one of which lets you prowl its rain-slicked alleys as a trenchcoat-wearing rodent.

Simply titled “rat detective”, the modifier shrinks your character down to a mere 10cm tall, letting you experience the powers and perils of being a city-dwelling rodent. The advantage of being a rat detective is you can climb on walls and ceilings, and sneak past people more easily. The downside is that you can’t question people, and citizens may even be hostile to your presence.

I gave the rat detective modifier a quick spin earlier today, and it immediately adds a different flavour to Shadows of Doubt. While a few people in the street were sympathetic to my presence, when I scurried up to a bunch of people warming themselves around a burning barrel, they immediately started trying to stomp on me, yelling things like “disgusting rat!”.

I clawed my way up the side of a building to get away, but you can only ascend so far (this is rat mode, not Spider-Man mode). Cornered on the top of a dumpster, eventually I had to leap back down to the street and dash for an alley to escape.

Rat detective is far from the only modifier the update adds. Another standout is “Snail Nemesis”. Apparently inspired by the “immortal snail” meme by Gavin Free, this makes your detective impervious to all damage, except for being touched by a tiny snail that pursues you throughout the city. I like to think of it as Terminator mode, although that makes me pine for an open-world Terminator game, so maybe don’t think about it like that.

Other modifiers include a classic Ironman mode that deletes your save if you die, a house arrest scenario that makes it a crime for you to leave your in-game home, a “gambling debt” option that starts you off with a big bank balance, but an even bigger debt to a loan shark that you must pay off in instalments or risk being confronted by debt collectors. Finally, the film noir toggle desaturates the screen for a classic sleuthing experience.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

It’s worth noting that the modifiers are not mutually exclusive. You can play with all of them switched on if you want, which sounds incredibly appealing and explosively chaotic. Indeed, some might argue Shadows of Doubt needed less chaos in its systems, not more, so I should mention the update also fixes a bunch of bugs and mechanical issues. It adds a cooldown timer to muggers so they won’t repeatedly inspect your wallet, and ensures loan sharks will fight players when you fail to pay them on time.

These fixes arrive on top of multiple quality-of-life patches released earlier this year, including updates issued in June and April. All told, if you drifted away from Shadows of Doubt after launch, now might be the perfect time to give your gumshoes another airing.

It’s not every day that you find a laptop discounted by more than $3,000 in a flash sale, but that’s what we’re looking at with this insane new Dell Inspiron 15″ model (AMD Ryzen 7 7730U, 15.6″ FHD, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD). Now on Amazon, you can grab this beast for just $959, down from its usual price of $3,999. That’s a 76 percent discount. Honestly, if you’re looking to snag an incredible deal or even flip it later for a profit, this is the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come around often.

Killer Specs

This Dell laptop is powered by the AMD Ryzen 7 7730U processor which packs 8 cores and 16 threads and can reach speeds up to 4.5GHz. It handily outdoes the Intel i7-1355U in real-world tasks which means it handles almost anything with ease and without any lag. The laptop features Radeon RX Vega 8 graphics which are more than adequate for smooth visuals and video work and perfect if you do any design work or want clear displays for meetings.

Memory-wise, this laptop is loaded with 64GB of DDR4 RAM, so you can keep a bunch of heavy programs open without missing a beat. On top of that, it’s got a massive 2TB PCIe NVMe SSD, so you’ve got plenty of super-fast storage. Don’t worry about slow boot-up or juggling files around: the data access is immediate, so your workflow will be smooth.

The screen is a 15.6-inch Full HD touchscreen with a 1920×1080 resolution and IPS technology for wide viewing angles. Thanks to an anti-glare coating, the display remains clear even under bright office lights or when you’re on the move. The laptop itself weighs just 3.59 pounds and offers all-day battery life which is handy if you’re working on the road or long periods of time when you’re not near a power source.

What’s more, it has fast Wi-Fi for video conferencing and cloud access without lag, and the ports have everything you require: USB-C 3.2, USB-A, HDMI 1.4 for external displays or projectors, headphone/microphone combo jack, and an SD card reader for fast data transfers.

Along with the hardware, Dell also includes a 6-in-1 accessory kit (worth $199) that adds real value including a USB-C Hub, 3-in-1 charging cable, USB-C cable, and Bluetooth earbuds. It’s ready to go right out of the box with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed so you can get right to work.

This deal is one to jump on fast because with a price this low and performance this high, it won’t last long.

Samsung Is Announcing a New iPad Pro Killer at IFA Next Week

by admin August 28, 2025

September, which starts *checks calendar* next week, is going to be a jam-packed month for new gadget announcements. In case you thought Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event on Sept. 9 where it’ll announce the iPhone 17 family of phones, new Apple Watches, and possibly AirPods Pro 3, was the only big tech extravaganza, let me remind you that IFA is happening right after Labor Day next week. IFA is like CES, but smaller and in Berlin instead of Las Vegas. Coinciding with IFA, Samsung is doing yet another virtual Unpacked event to announce a new tablet.

Live streaming on Sept. 4 at 5:30 a.m. ET (a dead giveaway that it’s IFA-related, since it’ll be 1:30 a.m. Berlin time) on Samsung.com, Samsung’s YouTube channel, and Samsung’s Newsroom, the virtual Unpacked will take the wraps off the “next evolution of Galaxy Tab.” In typical Samsung fashion, the company has already put up a reservation page with a limited time offer to receive $50 “Samsung Credit” for use toward other Samsung products, as well as up to $800 toward the next Android tablet with an eligible device trade-in. The reservation needs to be made by Sept. 3 and the Galaxy Tab has to be purchased between Sept. 4 and Oct. 5 in order to get the $50 credit.

Samsung sent Gizmodo the above event “invite.” Do you guys see anything in there? If I were a betting man, I’d say those stars inside the box hint at Galaxy AI stuffed into the new Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Galaxy Tab S11?

As for the Galaxy Tab itself, we’ll likely see successors to the Galaxy S10+ and S10 Ultra that were released last year. Do tablets—including iPad Pros—need to be on an annual refresh? No, but that’s not how capitalism works. Like any consumer tech maker, Samsung’s looking at its portfolio and wondering how to sell new versions of existing things to boost its quarterly earnings. The new tablets would presumably follow the same naming convention, so it wouldn’t surprise us if Samsung calls them the Galaxy Tab S11+ and Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra.

© Artem Golub / Gizmodo

What I’ll be watching out for next week is whether any tablet(s) will feature the Tab S10 Ultra’s gargantuan 14.6-inch screen or potentially an even larger one. How big a display is too big for a tablet? These things are friggin’ dinner trays at this point, stupidly thin dinner trays—sorry, tablets—that you could comfortably eat off.

Samsung’s next Unpacked is a virtual one, so we won’t be live-blogging it like we did at the event for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and Galaxy Watch 8/8 Classic in July. But stay tuned; Gizmodo will be covering all the news that’s worth checking out from IFA 2025, which officially starts on Sept. 5 and runs through Sept. 9. Press days fall on Sept. 3 and 4, so expect a torrent of product announcements to drop then.

CobraJet Nvidia AI-powered drone killer takes out ‘overwhelming enemy drone incursions’ at up to 300mph

by admin August 18, 2025

Defense startup SkyDefense LLC just launched an autonomous combat drone designed to take out enemy drone swarms at a much lower cost than traditional weapon systems. The company calls it the CobraJet — an uncrewed aerial vehicle (basically, a drone) designed for C-UAS (counter-unmanned aircraft system) missions. The drone combines Teledyne FLIR electro-optical and infrared sensors that do not contain restricted foreign parts, and Nvidia AI chips, allowing the drone to process the information that it sees with onboard sensors.

A different kind of VRAM

The CobraJet is also equipped with its proprietary Visual Realtime Area Monitoring (VRAM) system, allowing ground commanders to monitor the drone during autonomous operations and communicate with and control it, if needed. This gives its operator the option to let it operate on its own during reconnaissance, patrol, and identification, but still have a human making decisions when required. It can also use the same technology to communicate with other CobraJet units, allowing them to act together as a single entity to protect against enemy swarms.

Aside from its AI brain, the CobraJet also boasts an internal weapons bay and external hardpoints, allowing it to carry kamikaze drones, small missiles, or even fragmentation projectiles. It can also be modified to carry precision bombs and loitering munitions, making it a multirole drone. Its external design mimics that of the U.S.’s latest air superiority and multirole fighters, the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, with vertical take-off and landing capabilities and thrust vectoring nozzles. This means it can operate from the back of a truck and have improved maneuverability, allowing it to go toe-to-toe with small and nimble drones.

Asymmetric warfare answered?

CobraJet is SkyDefense’s solution to the emerging threat of drone swarms on the modern battlefield. These small and cheap weapons are widely used in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the defending Ukrainians effectively using drones to initially counter the larger Russian army. Today, both sides in the conflict use UAVs, and actions on the battlefield highlight the U.S.’s need to develop a cost-effective counter.

While existing weapons like surface-to-air missiles and air-to-air missiles can engage drones, there’s often a huge mismatch in price between these two platforms. Missiles often cost between half a million to more than $4 million — while you can buy a cheap drone for just $200, with the more sophisticated ones, like Iran’s Shahed-136, only costing $20,000. You can also send up a platoon of combat choppers to engage a drone swarm with guns, but you’re risking several multi-million-dollar weapon platforms to combat cheap suicide drones.

“Our USA-made CobraJets can communicate and coordinate as a flight team, enabling them to operate as an AI-powered unmanned Air Force,” said SkyDefense LLC President Nick Verini. “This team approach increases the effectiveness of the squadron while also significantly reducing the costs of destroying a swarm of enemy drones.”

SkyDefense LLC hasn’t released the unit cost of the CobraJet, but it’s going to be so much more affordable than the fighter jets it looks like, and the missiles they carry. The company is offering the drone to law enforcement, Homeland Security, and the U.S. military, giving them the ability to protect against hostile drone swarms without needing to spend copious amounts of money to take down such cheap weapons.
