He Got Us Talking to Alexa. Now He Wants to Kill Off AI Hallucinations

by admin June 7, 2025

If it weren’t for Amazon, it’s entirely possible that instead of calling out to Alexa to change the music on our speakers, we might have been calling out to Evi instead. That’s because the tech we know today as Amazon’s smart assistant started out life with the name of Evi (pronounced ee-vee), as named by its original developer, William Tunstall-Pedoe.

The British entrepreneur and computer scientist was experimenting with artificial intelligence before most of us had even heard of it. Inspired by sci-fi, he “arrogantly” set out to create a way for humans to talk to computers way back in 2008, he said at SXSW London this week.

Arrogant or not, Tunstall-Pedoe’s efforts were so successful that Evi, which launched in 2012 around the same time as Apple’s Siri, was acquired by Amazon and he joined a team working on a top-secret voice assistant project. What resulted from that project was the tech we all know today as Alexa.

That original mission accomplished, Tunstall-Pedoe now has a new challenge in his sights: to kill off AI hallucinations, which he says makes the technology highly risky for all of us to use. Hallucinations are the inaccurate pieces of information and content that AI generates out of thin air. They are, said Tunstall-Pedoe, “an intrinsic problem” of the technology.

Through the experience he had with Alexa, he learned that people personify the technology and assume that when it’s speaking back to them it’s thinking the way we think. “What it’s doing is truly remarkable, but it’s doing something different from thinking,” said Tunstall-Pedoe. “That sets expectations… that what it’s telling you is true.”

Innumerable examples of AI generating nonsense show us that truth and accuracy are never guaranteed. Tunstall-Pedoe was concerned that the industry isn’t doing enough to tackle hallucinations, so formed his own company, Unlikely AI, to tackle what he views as a high-stakes problem.

Anytime we speak to an AI, there’s a chance that what it’s telling us is false, he said. “You can take that away into your life, take decisions on it, or you put it on the internet and it gets spread by others, [or] used to train future AIs to make the world a worse place.”

Some AI hallucinations have little impact, but in industries where the cost of getting things wrong — in medicine, law, finance and insurance, for example — inaccurately generated content can have severe consequences. These are the industries that Unlikely AI is targeting for now, said Tunstall-Pedoe

Unlikely AI uses a mix of deep tech and proprietary tech to ground outputs in logic, minimizing the risk of hallucinations, as well as to log the decision-making process of algorithms. This makes it possible for companies to understand where things have gone wrong, when they inevitably do.

Right now, AI can never be 100% accurate due to the underlying tech, said Tunstall-Pedoe. But advances currently happening in his own company and others like it mean that we’re moving towards a point where accuracy can be achieved.

For now, Unlikely AI is mainly being used by business customers, but eventually Tunstall-Pedoe believes it will be built into services and software all of us use. The change being brought about by AI, like any change, presents us with risks, he said. But overall he remains “biased towards optimism” that AI will be a net positive for society.

‘A Different Era’: Bored Ape Creator Yuga Labs Wants to Kill the ApeCoin DAO

by admin June 5, 2025

In brief

  • Yuga Labs CEO Greg “Garga” Solano drew up plans for the elimination of the ApeCoin DAO.
  • If passed, the proposal would spin out DAO assets to a new Yuga Labs entity, ApeCo.
  • Solano said the move would allow the ApeCoin ecosystem to obtain clarity and focus.

The creator of the Bored Ape Yacht Club wants to take control of ApeCoin, after years of distancing itself from the Ethereum token created for its ecosystem.

In a new ApeCoin Improvement Proposal idea, Yuga Labs CEO and co-founder Greg Solano (aka Garga) outlined potential plans to disband the ApeCoin DAO, eliminating all governance rights for APE token holders in the process.

The idea, which started gaining attention on social media earlier this week, would transition all assets and responsibilities of the DAO to a new entity created by Yuga Labs, called ApeCo.

“ApeCoin DAO was a bold experiment, but one born of a different era. What started with promise has devolved into sluggish, noisy, and often unserious governance theater,” wrote Solano in his post on the ApeCoin forums. “Too many resources have gone to vanity proposals and low-impact initiatives. That stops now.”

It’s time for ApeCoin to sunset the DAO and get back to winning.

The AIP creates a new entity, ApeCo, whose mission will be to supercharge the APE ecosystem by supporting high-quality builders and reinforcing three core pillars: ApeChain, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and Otherside.

— Garga.eth (Greg Solano) (@CryptoGarga) June 5, 2025

The “bold experiment” came to life in 2022 at the peak of the Bored Ape frenzy, acting as the decentralized entity responsible for launching ApeCoin (APE) on the Ethereum blockchain—not Yuga Labs itself. The ApeCoin DAO was treated as an independent entity, despite being closely aligned with Yuga and the Bored Ape ecosystem.

But over time and as the token price has fallen substantially, the DAO has faced criticism for funding proposals that didn’t add value to the ApeCoin ecosystem or Bored Ape Yacht Club brand.

If the drafted plan is ultimately passed, then the ApeCoin DAO would be fully dissolved and all prior ApeCoin Improvement Proposals (AIPs) would be nullified, with exception given to those that have executed AIP contracts. Additionally, it would terminate all working groups, delegated authorities, elections, and the ApeCoin forum.

“The AIP creates a new entity, ApeCo, whose mission will be to supercharge the APE ecosystem by supporting high-quality builders and reinforcing three core pillars: ApeChain, Bored Ape Yacht Club, and Otherside,” Solano posted on X.

Per the proposal, ApeCo would be granted all assets held by the DAO or ApeCoin Foundation, only after the new entity funds the ApeCoin staking contract and the DAO infrastructure is disabled.

According to Solano, this would create notable benefits to the ApeCoin ecosystem, including “decisive clarity” and “strategic focus”—key themes that have been highlighted since Solano was reinstated as Yuga Labs CEO early last year and the firm began parting ways with IP it picked up since its explosive growth started in 2021.

“Since returning as CEO, everything I’ve worked on has aimed at one thing: getting back to the spirit and velocity of year one, when Gordon Goner [Wylie Aronow] and I were building Yuga from scratch,” he posted on X. “We’ve made huge progress. But the biggest unlock would be in getting ApeCoin rowing in the right direction.”

Just last week, Yuga Labs parted ways with the IP for Ethereum NFT collection Moonbirds that it acquired in February 2024. Earlier this year, it also sold the IP rights to the CryptoPunks and Meebits collections it acquired from Larva Labs in 2022.

The IP shedding, plus the spinout of its HV-MTL game to Faraway in early 2024, has the Bored Ape creator once more focused on its core collection, along with the ApeChain network and long-in-the-works Otherside metaverse game.

“We’re building the best chain in crypto and expanding the most iconic brand in NFTs. ApeCoin should be the economic engine for that future,” Solano wrote in his conclusion.

Early reception to the idea has been broadly positive, with community members and other Web3 builders speaking out in support.

Based on existing ApeCoin DAO governance rules, the idea will need to be reviewed by the ApeCoin DAO Special Council before it can be sent to a vote. Voting periods open on the first and third Thursday of every month at 9:00pm ET.

A representative for Yuga Labs did not immediately respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

ApeCoin, the native token of the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem and the governance token for the ApeCoin DAO, is down more than 7% in the last 24 hours to $0.66. The token is more than 97% off its April 2022 all-time high of $26.70

Neowiz signs global rights to Shadowlight’s inaugural game, Kill the Shadow

by admin June 5, 2025

Lies of P publisher Neowiz has signed a deal with Shadowlight for the global rights of the studio’s inaugural game, Kill the Shadow.

As spotted by GamesBeat, the Shanghai studio said Neowiz shared its “philosophy on game development,” and emphasized the publisher’s openness to collaborating.

“What initially drew us to Shadowlight was a collaborative development philosophy to deliver premium narrative games for PC and console audiences,” said Neowiz CEO, Kim Seung-chul.

“We look forward to working closely with the team to release Kill the Shadow globally, and we hope audiences find the same charm we experienced as we reveal more about the title.”

CEO of Shadowlight said of the deal: “Neowiz is a reliable global publisher, and we were grateful to find a partner who shares our philosophy on game development. As we see the games industry evolve to be inclusive of other cultures, it’s important to have a publisher that is open to collaborating and emphasizing the significance of your content.”

Neowiz similarly signed a $8 million deal with Warsaw-based developer Zakazane at the end of last year to publish its upcoming neo-Western RPG. In 2023, Neowiz invested $17 million in Polish developer Blank Game Studios. It also acquired a 21% stake in the developer.

EA, fresh from killing a big Marvel game, reassures fans it still has three other Marvel projects it could kill in the future

by admin May 31, 2025

Yesterday, EA announced it was cancelling its in-development Black Panther game, and closing down Cliffhanger Games, the studio making it. But don’t worry gang, EA and Marvel have come forward to reassure fans that there are still other games in development that have yet to be suddenly and unceremoniously killed.

In a statement to IGN, an EA spokesperson provided the following quote, which was attributed to EA Entertainment president Laura Miele: “Our partnership with Marvel remains strong and our multi-title, long-term collaboration continues.” In addition, a Marvel statement was also recived by IGN, which reads as follows:

“The multi-title, long-term relationship between Marvel Games and EA, a creative collaboration focused on original storytelling with various, beloved Marvel characters, remains strong. Development of our console and PC titles, beginning with Marvel’s Iron Man, is led by Motive Studios.”

IGN would follow up to clarify whether or not this still meant that three Marvel games were in development as part of the original deal signed by both Marvel and EA back in 2023, and were told that is indeed the case. This includes an upcoming Iron Man game in the works over at Motive Studios.

The problem with this is that EA has been on such a roll recently when it comes to shutting down games, projects that it’s already spent millions upon millions of dollars on for nothing, that it’s somewhat hard to get overly excited about games we’ve not seen much of. Already this year it has killed various projects at Respawn including a new Titanfall game, so can you really expect folks to get excited?

And all the while, the people actually making these games have to sit down at their workdesk and trust that their team will be fine, even as entire offices are walking out the door with cardboard box in hand. It sucks dude! You want to reassure people that EA are still making games? Try releasing one!

Frank Castle’s Back and Ready to Kill as the Punisher Once More

by admin May 24, 2025

Earlier this year, we got Frank Castle back on our TVs, and now it’s time for the Punisher to make a return to comics, too.

Marvel’s gun-toting antihero is coming back to the page in Punisher: Red Band, a five-issue miniseries from Ben Percy (Wolverine) and Julius Ohta (Iron Man). The last time we saw Frank was back in 2023 when he took control of the Hand ninja cult, learned his wife was alive and wanted a divorce, and was later sent to Weirdworld. This new comic sees Frank back in New York without any memories of his past life, but still good at taking lives, so that’s what he’s gonna do. Much like his TV counterpart, this Frank is gonna get up to some bloody stuff, and his miniseries comes with a “Red Band” label to signify it’s got more explicit content than usual.

“Frank Castle is one of my all-time favorite characters, and Punisher is a series I’ve been gunning to write for a long, long time,” wrote Percy. “I’m going to lean in fully and push the very limits of my favorite genre: hairy psychopaths. This is going to be as gritty and bloody as it gets. Street-level mayhem awaits you.”

Marvel has often seemed uncertain about what to do with Frank. Some of that was owed to his Netflix series and the timing of a heavily armed vigilante in a show airing weeks or months after mass shootings; other times, it was because of how police had co-opted his symbol and used it to decorate their vehicles. Daredevil: Born Again confronted that latter point during its first season by having Frank kill a bunch of Punisher cops and telling them they suck.

We’ll see what comics Frank does when Punisher: Red Band begins September 10.

Here’s Why You Can’t Kill Animals In Assassin’s Creed Shadows

by admin May 20, 2025

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a very good game that animal lovers can enjoy because there’s no way to harm a single creature in the game (except for people, of course). That’s a first for the franchise and I wanted to learn why Ubisoft went this route for its latest open-world adventure.

The Week In Games: Pokémon With Guns And More New Releases

When I played and reviewed Assassin’s Creed Shadows in March, I was surprised to discover that the player can never attack or kill any animals in the game’s virtual recreation of feudal Japan. You can, however, pet them and draw pictures of the various wildlife you encounter. Unlike so many other open-world games, including previous Ubisoft projects, there aren’t even any aggressive predators in Shadows. You are never forced to kill any wolves or bears to survive and craft upgrades. I recently asked Ubisoft about this change, and learned from AC Shadows creative director Jonathan Dumont that there were a few reasons behind it.

Kotaku: In Shadows, players can’t hurt or hunt animals. The only way you can interact with them is by petting or painting them. What was the rationale/design decision behind this?

Jonathan Dumont: There are several reasons behind this design choice. Firstly, feudal Japan didn’t have many large, aggressive animals to challenge players. When we reviewed the available animal roster, it seemed more appealing to observe and pet them rather than engage in combat.

Additionally, we wanted to incorporate world activities that offer a zen-like experience, providing spiritual or contemplative moments in nature to balance Naoe and Yasuke’s journey.

When did the idea of letting players add animals to the base happen? And did you expect people to start building petting zoos (like I did)?

JD: It happened really early on. In a team meeting, we saw the first implementation of the Sumi-e activity, where the initial design was to collect only the paintings, but as soon as we saw the animals it was unanimous that we needed to make them pets for the hideout. And yes, it immediately led to team members making cool-looking petting zoos and animal shelters.

Has the team appreciated the mostly positive online response to the lack of violence against animals in Shadows?

JD: I can’t speak for everyone, but I think players appreciated that it gave a different dimension to the exploration we were going for.

Does the team/Ubisoft feel like hunting animals could return in future installments, or is this a new direction for the series?

JD: I think it will depend on the setting and player fantasy. For AC Shadows, it made sense.

This interview has been lightly edited and formatted.
