The Division 2 kicks off 10th anniversary year with The Division 2: Survivors, “an updated take on the survival extraction experience”

by admin August 23, 2025

The Division 2: Survivors is “an updated take on the survival extraction experience” coming to The Division 2.

At a panel at Gamescom, the company confirmed that though development is currently “in the early stages” under the watchful eye of creative director and “veteran of the Division from the early days of the original game”, Magnus Jansén, the team is keen to involve the community from the off.

“The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby as it is ours, and we strive for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” said executive producer, Julian Gerighty.

There was no in-game artwork or screenshots to share, but Ubisoft did reveal a handful of concept art pieces, which you can see below.

We don’t quite know when to expect it – it’s still labelled as TBA for now – but we did get a little update on what else players can expect over the course of this year and next:

Interested in trying before you buy and maybe giving a little feedback as you go? Ubisoft is looking to refresh its Elite Task Program, so sign up now if you’re a “committed player [looking] to engage directly with the development team and assist in guiding the future of the Division”.

The Division Resurgence – the free-to-play mobile RPG shooter that picks up a few months after the events of the original game – is also looking for participants for closed tests on both iOS and Android. Ubisoft says it offers “the same gameplay experience as the Division games adapted to mobile gaming”, and “with a familiar map updated to reflect the passage of time, the Division Resurgence will bridge the narrative gap between the Division 1 and 2, adding to the existing lore with additional story beats over time.”

What we’ve been playing – cops, kicks, cups and climbs

by admin June 21, 2025

21st June

Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we’ve been playing. This week, we’ve got a bumper crop! Alex tries out being a police officer, Tom O tries out being a footballer, Dom excels as a monk, and Connor lets it die.

What have you been playing?

Catch up with the older editions of this column in our What We’ve Been Playing archive.

The Precinct, PC

The Precinct trailer.Watch on YouTube

My internet went down the other day. When this happens, it’s always pretty stunning to realise how reliant we are on a constant internet connection; most of the stuff I’d been playing requires some sort of internet validation. Even though you can play Magic the Gathering: Arena against bots, you can’t do it without a connection. While you can boot Hitman, it feels a bit pointless to play it without the persistent progression online hooks provide – something that feels likely to make the Switch 2 version more irrelevant than it should be. So, with Virgin Media bequeathing me 24-hours of downtime, I had to find something truly offline.

I already had The Precinct installed, after a friend of mine mentioned it. A game recommendation in a ‘boys chat’ of guys I went to school with is pretty rare, so I figured this was worth a look… and then promptly forgot about it. But here it was, installed, ready, with no connection required. Fate.

The Precinct is an interesting thing. Brazenly inspired by the 2D Grand Theft Auto games, it’s a top-down(ish) perspective title set in an open world city – but this time, you’re on the other side of the law. I never quite know how to feel about stuff like this – there’s always the risk of sliding into weirdly reverent copaganda, but I have a soft spot for the Police Quest adventure games, and there’s shades of that here.

The Police Quest echoes come in the form of how procedural the gameplay feels. There’s a heavy focus, literally, on police procedure. You can patrol the open-world city streets and issue parking tickets for being incorrectly parked or having expired tickets, or issue verbal warnings to graffiti artists. There’s a bit of discretion here – do you arrest, fine, or simply warn someone who was speeding? You’re meant to follow the book, and only use force as necessary. There’s also shootouts and car chases, of course, but so far the charm comes from the focus on the minutiae of the process, hammering a separate button to ensure someone is read their rights as you cuff them.

I’ve only played a few hours – I’m not that far removed from the game’s late, title card drop, in fact. But what I’ve played so far is a promising little start. I’ve no idea if it’s going to become grindingly repetitive, as is always the danger in games structured like this, but I intend to return. That’s a pretty good start for a game picked out on a no-internet whim.

Rematch, PS5

The Rematch trailer.Watch on YouTube

“The idiots are winning.” Fans of underappreciated British TV comedy will recognise that one, but importantly it sums up a lot of my time with the recently released 3/4/5-a-side footy game, Rematch. It’s a team-based online game, and let me tell you, the people playing are testing me. Usually a calm, level-headed man, a few sessions this week have taken me close to breaking point.

In the spirit of playground football, goalkeepers are fluid. If one player leaves the zone around the goal they become a standard outfield player while another can run over and magically have gloves on and be ready to dive about. This is great, in theory, but it encourages people to go on little walks up the pitch. Again, fine, as it pulls opposing players towards them, leaving gaps for attackers to exploit. That is, if the goalie doesn’t fluff it almost every time.

It’s early days in Rematch, a game that has only been on release properly for a day at the time of writing this, so I’m hoping people learn from failure. A goalie who has discipline is far better than one who thinks they’re Mbappé, gets dispossessed by the first attacker and then leaves the goal wide open. Fair play for having the belief in yourself to do such a brazen act of team sabotage, over and over, I guess – I feel sheepish if I accidentally misplace a pass. If there is a gaming god out there, please tell these fools to understand the very basics. The fact that my team mates, absolute liabilities to be kind, generally score more points in each game than I do is bananas.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster, Switch 2

The Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster trailer.Watch on YouTube

“I just summoned your Tiz,” reads a text from a friend I got at some point in the last week. “And he absolutely one-shotted the boss I was fighting!” Mmm. Yes. Good. My minions are doing their work. This was always my favourite part of the original Bravely Default on the 3DS, making use of the social elements to feel like you’re almost shortcutting through the grind of the game.

But you’re not, you see: it’s designed this way. The devs at Square Enix were incredibly smart in the way they balanced the Final Fantasy-like RPG, allowing for little areas where super-powered friend summons could rush in to help you out and trivialise otherwise difficult boss fights. After a few hours of play time, you can customise your Limit Break-like attacks with unique names, effects, and animations.

My Tiz, for example, is a beefed-up monk that can deal 4x unarmed damage to human enemies – which a lot of early bosses are – and apply debuffs whilst he’s at it. My friend used this to great effect. The move I crafted, I’m afraid to reveal, is called “Get Fisted”. Monks gonna monk. You still need to pay attention to the gimmicks and the way things work (many boss fights have multiple enemies, and typically a Friend Summon will only take down one), so this isn’t some sort of game-breaking panacea.

Another little boon is that by connecting with mates, you can start rebuilding an in-game town. Gather 10 in-game NPCs or people from your friends list, pop them all into the item shop, and have them work for 45 real-world minutes, and you’ll be able to purchase new wares from travelling merchants. Commit enough resources to, say, the weapons shop, and you can start getting late-game items as early as 10 hours in. It’s a wonderful way of utilising player downtime, and a delightful reworking of a tool that used to rely on the oft-mourned StreetPass feature on the 3DS.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster is a charming little game. And I should hope so, since it’s pretty much the biggest draw the Switch 2 had for me at launch.

Let it Die, PC

The Let it Die trailer.Watch on YouTube

Every now and again I’ll remember some bit of games industry news from a year or so ago, and it’ll send me down a rabbit hole. Let it Die has been this rabbit hole for me recently.

I really like Let it Die! It’s this super bizarre, charming action game with a rad multiplayer component which allows other players to invade your base for spoils. Sounds simple enough, but it’s a Grasshopper Manufacture game, so there’s a lady obsessed with mushrooms, you pull different bodies from an industrial chain of body bags, and Death is your companion throughout. Not, like, the concept. The literal reaper – and he does kickflips.

The game remains a lot of fun. It’s a free-to-play title so there are some pretty gnarly microtransactions present but I’ve yet to feel the desire to buy any. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. It’s got jagged edges and can feel a tad repetitive from time to time, but it’s got soul to it which I value more, the older I get.

There was a multiplayer PvP spinoff called Deathverse: Let it Die which had an incredibly brief life. It wasn’t great, but again, it had that golden soul to it that I loved. The game was taken offline some time ago, and as far as we know, it’s still in the process of being remade into a totally new thing. I’m aware that you can’t keep a game running with only 100 players online, but darn it, I do find myself missing Deathverse every so often.

Anyway, tangent over. Let it Die is a bombastic little game that has had years of free updates, so if you’ve got little else to do this weekend, why not give it a try!

Stellar Blade is now Sony's biggest ever game on Steam by concurrent players
Game Updates

Stellar Blade director kicks the horny nest, says steamy stuff’s fine, but modders adding fresh twists would be cooler

by admin June 17, 2025

Stellar Blade modders have made a lot of sexual stuff so far. As it turns out, the game’s director is cool with that, though he is hoping that despite the game not having any official tools, modders’ll have a go at creating fresh wrinkles that add to what the Stellar Blade experience offers.

Hyung-tae Kim gave his opinion on where the game’s modding scene is currently at in a recent interview with South Korean site This Is Game, translated by Automaton and Genki.

First of all, the director’s general view on Stellar Blade modding’s pretty positive. He doesn’t see the need to interfere with them except by encouraging folks from being careful with or avoiding stuff that could mess up their base game. Exactly the kind of view you’d hope a developer would have, rather than panicking and calling the lawyers the moment someone figures out how to replace a texture.

He’s also cool with the idea of folks making reams of NSFW stuff like nice suits for the game, since Stellar Blade has a strong rating and is therefore aimed at adults. I’d caveat that as adults you might find a bit weird, but I digress. To be clear you can do the dirty to whatever floats your boat, as long as it’s not doing any harm. The trouble with Stellar Blade has been misogynistic players and online dicks treating Eve, jiggle physics et al, as an example of how all women should look in games – see some of the Steam reviews.

Anyway, the director’s less of a fan of paid mods that charge high prices, but generally seems to trust players not to engage with anything that crosses a line or involve material that could be classed as harmful or sensitive.

All of that said, Kim is keen to see Stellar Blade modders spread their wings a bit. While acknowledging that the game’s lack of official tools will likely make this more difficult, the director’s interested in seeing folks make mods that switch up what it’s like to play the game, but without straying too far from its original vision.

According to Genki’s translation, that wish was accompanied by Kim using the killer phrase “modders’ firepower is still weak”, as part of suggesting that he thinks the current crop of new cosmetics and minor tweaks don’t go much beyond the stuff the base game offers. Which, to be fair, is the norm for games that haven’t been out on PC long.

So, we’ll have to see if the SteamyBladers accept this challenge, put aside their jiggle physics manipulation for a second, open up new tabs that cover their pretty out there desktop backgrounds, and set about pushing the limits of modding potential rather than the limits of taste. You can do it, high-five Stellar Blade modde…actually, you know what, maybe not. I don’t know where that mitt’s been.

Crypto Just Got Pricier In Brazil: 17.5% Tax Kicks In

by admin June 15, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Brazil’s finance ministry has moved to simplify crypto taxes, swapping a tiered system for a single flat rate. On June 12, Provisional Measure 1303 took effect, scrapping the old break that let residents sell up to R$35,000 (about $6,300) in crypto each month tax‑free. Now, every capital gain from digital assets faces a 17.5% levy.

Flat Tax Applies To All Investors

According to local reports, the new rule ends the exemption and treats all traders the same. Small‑scale sellers who once paid nothing now owe 17.5% on every gain. Big players could actually save money. Before, anyone moving more than R$30 million in a month hit a 22.5% top rate. Now they pay just 17.5%.

Small Traders Face Bigger Bills

Based on reports from Portal do Bitcoin, someone who sold R$30,000 in crypto last month would have owed zero under the old law. Under the new flat rate, that person now owes R$5,250. That’s a steep rise for casual users and hobbyists.

NEW🇧🇷: Brazil ends crypto tax exemptions with a new flat 17.5% tax on all profits—no more R$35K monthly buffer! Under Provisional Measure No. 1303, even small $BTC or $ETH gains are now taxed equally. Retail traders hit hardest, while bigger players may benefit.#Brazil… pic.twitter.com/3eETcLCV5i

— FinanceFeeds (@FXFinanceFeeds) June 13, 2025

At the same time, a trader handling R$10 million in a single deal would drop from roughly R$1.75 million in tax under the old system to R$1.75 million now, so no change. But those above R$30 million save up to R$150,000 per R$1 million traded.

Quarterly Reporting And Losses

Crypto holdings held in self‑custody wallets or abroad did not escape this overhaul. All gains are tallied every three months. Investors can offset losses from the previous five quarters.

After 2025, that window shrinks. From January 2026 onward, only losses within the last few quarters will count. Traders will need better record‑keeping and careful timing.

Total crypto market cap currently at $3.24 trillion. Chart: TradingView

Other Assets And Betting Targeted

This measure isn’t limited to crypto. Fixed‑income papers like LCAs, LCIs, CRIs and CRAs now carry a 5% profit tax. Betting operators saw their rate jump from 12% to 18%. The ministry won’t say how much extra cash it expects.

But lawmakers want a steadier flow after a failed attempt to raise the Financial Transaction Tax, which was pulled amid strong market and congressional pushback.

Meanwhile, in parallel, a separate bill would let employers pay part of a salary in crypto, capped at 50%. Full crypto pay would only be allowed for foreign staff or contractors under strict rules.

Wages for standard workers must stay in fiat. Contractors could opt for 100% crypto if both sides agree. All payouts would use official exchange rates set by Central Bank‑approved platforms.

FIFA Kicks Off Avalanche L1 to Power Soccer NFT Collectibles Platform

by admin May 22, 2025

In brief

  • FIFA is migrating its FIFA Collect digital collectibles platform from Algorand to its own dedicated blockchain built on Avalanche.
  • FIFA Collect offers NFT-based digital collectibles based on key players and moments from international soccer competition.
  • Avalanche enables developers to launch their own dedicated, customizable L1 or layer-1 chains.

FIFA, the governing body of international soccer, is planning to migrate its FIFA Collect NFT collectibles platform to its own Avalanche Layer-1 blockchain.

FIFA Collect, which allows users to purchase and trade NFT-based soccer highlights, was previously launched on Algorand and also issued some collectibles on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon.

In April, the platform said it would leave Algorand and migrate assets to a new FIFA-centric blockchain, which is now confirmed to be powered by Avalanche.

“This move enhances our ability to deliver unique digital collectibles and immersive fan experiences, powered by the speed, scalability, and EVM compatibility. That means seamless integration with popular wallets, easier access, and a future-proof foundation for growth,” Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex and FIFA Collect, said in a statement.

“We’re proud to help lay the groundwork for a new era of digital football, and this technology aligned best with the long-term vision and the technical requirements needed to support the continued growth of our digital ecosystem.”

The decision to migrate from Algorand was made by analyzing factors like performance, scalability, and customizability, according to Abbate.

“FIFA is a world-renowned brand and league. Avalanche gives it the infrastructure and scale to leverage their global audience, fan base, and business ambitions on their terms and to expand with assets, applications, and use cases as they grow,” Ava Labs Chief Business Officer John Nahas told Decrypt.

Now with FIFA’s digital soccer collectibles platform migrating to its own chain, Nahas said the industry should consider it a step towards broader adoption of blockchain.

“I’m excited, I’m sure the Avalanche community will be thrilled, and the broader industry should see the largest sports league in the world expanding on-chain, with their own chain, as a step towards real world adoption of this technology that can bring about new assets, applications, and use cases,” Nahas added.

The migration of FIFA Collect is the first of FIFA’s plans for its new blockchain, but future business cases are planned, according to a statement, though no further details were shared.

Cardano Kicks Off Independent Audit Of ADA Redemption

by admin May 21, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

A third-party forensic review of the long-running Cardano (ADA) voucher redemption programme is finally in motion after Input Output Global (IOG) confirmed that the global law firm McDermott Will & Emery (MW&E) and the audit heavyweight BDO have been retained to “audit and prepare a public report of the ADA redemption,” according to IOG’s chief legal and policy officer Joel Telpner.

The engagement seeks to neutralise weeks of controversy over allegations that hundreds of millions of unclaimed ADA were quietly diverted during a 2021 ledger event and to provide a definitive historical ledger of every presale token, its status and its current location.

Cardano Engages Firms To Audit Unclaimed ADA Vouchers

Emurgo, one of the three founding entities of Cardano, welcomed the move and urged the community to “await the independent audit results,” insisting that only a tiny fraction of presale vouchers remain outstanding after a seven-year search that even involved door-to-door visits in Japan.

In his post on X, Telpner wrote that MW&E, “a global law firm with more than 1,400 lawyers and 24 locations,” and BDO, “a global accounting and audit firm with worldwide locations,” would begin work immediately and have been instructed to deliver the report “as soon as humanly possible.” MW&E’s fintech and blockchain group has been ranked in Chambers FinTech for two consecutive years, reflecting deep regulatory and transactional expertise in digital assets.

BDO, for its part, advertises a dedicated digital-asset forensics practice that combines on-chain analytics with open-source intelligence to trace complex token flows. Telpner added that a specialist blockchain analytics firm will be added to the engagement once conflicts checks are complete.

Emurgo’s thread, posted less than 24 hours before Telpner’s announcement, stressed that “the vast majority of the pre-sale ADA vouchers have been successfully redeemed” and that the remaining unredeemed slice became technically unspendable after the Shelley hard fork, necessitating an on-chain move to preserve redemption rights. The company acknowledged community frustration but warned that some criticisms had crossed into “excessive, unwarranted FUD” that ignores the full context of the painstaking redemption effort.

The Cardano Foundation, which was not directly involved in post-2021 voucher operations, issued its own statement on May 19 noting that “the effort to locate and support remaining voucher holders has been led by the IO team over the past four years” and welcoming the coming audit.

Pressure for a comprehensive report intensified after NFT artist Masato Alexander published a thread on May 7 accusing IOG founder Charles Hoskinson of using “genesis keys” during the Allegra hard fork to reassign about 318 million ADA—worth roughly US $619 million at the time—from unredeemed presale wallets to treasury accounts via a Move Instantaneous Rewards (MIR) transaction in October 2021.

Hoskinson called the charge “false and misleading,” asserting that “IOG never gave itself 350 million unclaimed ADA. This is a lie,” and said the unredeemed remainder—less than 0.2 per cent of the crowdsale—was ultimately donated to Intersect, Cardano’s governance body. He also threatened legal action against those repeating the allegations.

No target publication date has been set; Telpner conceded that “as of today I honestly don’t know” when the final report will be ready, but stressed that both firms have been asked to “complete the audit and prepare and make the report available as soon as humanly possible.”

At press time, ADA traded at $0.727.
