Low Risk DeFi Could Drive Ethereum Fees While Keeping Values Aligned

by admin September 21, 2025

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said revenue from low-risk decentralized finance protocols could give the network economic stability — much like Google Search supports Google — while letting nonfinancial apps uphold Ethereum’s cultural values.

Low-risk DeFi could address “important tensions” in the Ethereum community over whether apps that bring in enough revenue to economically sustain the ecosystem align with the cultural and ethical values that brought people to Ethereum in the first place, Buterin said in a blog post on Saturday.

The former has been a combination of nonfungible tokens, memecoins, and speculative trading, while the nonfinancial and semifinancial apps that reflect Ethereum’s cultural values have either struggled to gain widespread adoption or haven’t generated enough fees, he said.

“This disjointness created a lot of dissonance in the community,” Buterin said, before making his case for low-risk DeFi being Ethereum’s main fee generator. One example Buterin highlighted was deposit rates for stablecoin lending on DeFi protocol Aave, which hover around 5% for blue-chips like Tether (USDT) and USDC (USDC) and above 10% for higher risk stables.

Similarly, Buterin noted that Google does many “interesting and valuable things” — such as its Chromium family of browsers, Pixel phones, its open-source AI Gemini models, and more — but the revenue they make from those products is a fraction compared to what it makes through search and advertisements.

It comes as the total value locked on Ethereum DeFi recently surpassed $100 billion for the first time since early 2022. DeFi TVL tanked massively across the ecosystem during the 2022-2023 bear market, and TVL figures have largely trailed the performance of top layer 1 tokens this bull market.

However, DeFi has picked up lately amid an increase in regulatory momentum, particularly the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which is tipped to push DeFi adoption even further. A recent survey from the DeFi Education Fund found that over 40% of Americans are open to DeFi if stronger laws are put in place.

Ethereum has the potential to “do much better” than Google

Ethereum has the potential to “do much better” than Google due to its decentralization. Unlike Google, Ethereum’s decentralized structure better positions low-risk DeFi to align financial success with ethical outcomes, creating harmony between “doing well” and “being good.”

“The revenue generator does not have to be the most revolutionary or exciting application of Ethereum. But it does need to be something that is at least not actively unethical or not embarrassing.”

Buterin criticized Google’s incentive model, noting that advertising revenue pushes the company to hoard user data, conflicting with its original open-source and positive-sum ethos.

Vitalik advocates for basket currencies, flatcoins

While low-risk DeFi is often about enabling easier access to the US dollar — particularly those in low-income and high-inflation countries — Buterin would like to see other innovations that provide economic support to Ethereum.

Buterin pitched the idea of building cryptoassets that track a basket of currencies and flatcoins that are based directly on consumer price indices.

Final Fantasy Tactics remaster devs built a replacement for its lost source code from fansite downloads, director says: ‘I do want to thank all of the fans for all of their help in keeping that information archived’

by admin September 2, 2025

Back in June, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles director Kazutoyo Maehiro offered something of an explanation for why it’s been more than a decade since FF Tactics has been playable on current platforms: Square Enix had lost the game’s original source code.

At a recent PAX West 2025 panel on August 30, Maehiro offered additional details on how the devs of the Ivalice Chronicles remaster stitched together a replacement for the original FF tactics source code, and how we should all thank fan archivists for their contributions to that effort.

“It’s true that we didn’t have the source code,” Maehiro said via translator. “The reason we didn’t have that has to do with how we managed things at the time.”

Today, Maehiro said, Square Enix has “some really nice resource management tools” that archive a new version of a game’s code with every minute, daily update. But during the original development of Final Fantasy Tactics, the protocols were… a bit more lax, particularly while localizing the game in different languages.

“We would take the data from the Japanese version and overwrite the English data on it. And then if we wanted to do another language, we would just keep stacking data on top and overwriting and overwriting,” Maehiro said. “Basically, because we kept doing all that overwriting, the true original ceased to exist.”

That sound you hear is the collective shuddering of all the world’s programmers.

While Square Enix didn’t have to start from scratch for The Ivalice Chronicles, Maehiro said it was “difficult” to reassemble “the true original” of Final Fantasy Tactics from its PS1 release and its ports on PSP and mobile. Eventually, the Square Enix devs turned to the ultimate archival authority: the devoted sickos on Final Fantasy fan sites.

“We were using whatever resources we had available to us. We analyzed all those different versions to try and find what we felt was the original,” Maehiro said. “On top of that, we actually went to different websites made by fans and looked for data there, because we know you guys do such a good job of keeping that all up to date.”

After acknowledging the efforts of the “really good” engineering team that analyzed the various versions to reconstruct the ur-Final Fantasy Tactics, Maehiro offered his gratitude for fan archivists and game preservationists.

“I do want to thank all of the fans for all of their help in keeping that information archived like you do,” Maehiro said. “I think with all of that put together, we were able to make a very good version of the game that is true to the original.”

As Battlefield 6 commits to ‘keeping it grounded’ with skins, Call of Duty director makes an unconvincing promise to ‘calibrate’ cosmetics in Black Ops 7

by admin August 19, 2025

We’re set for another Call of Duty vs. Battlefield face-off this year, and it’s already been fascinating to watch how these two military shooters present themselves. When it comes to one of the most incendiary topics in multiplayer games at the moment, the rising prevalence of goofy Fortnite-style skins, Call of Duty has become the poster child of ugliness run amok.

The growing exhaustion over incongruent cosmetics that erode Call of Duty’s art style is what prompted Battlefield Studios’ stance on skins in Battlefield 6: “It has to be grounded. That is what BF3 and BF4 was—it was all soldiers, on the ground. It’s going to be like this. I don’t think it needs Nicki Minaj. Let’s keep it real, keep it grounded.”

Time will tell if Battlefield 6 actually sticks to that mission statement—the allure of tacky crap might be irresistible when enough players are eager to buy them—but it’s telling that, given the same opportunity to renew its stance on cosmetics, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 developers were decidedly wishy-washy about the whole thing.

“We have thought about this, and I think if you look at us, we’re always looking at community feedback”, Treyarch associate creative director Miles Leslie told IGN in an interview ahead of today’s Blops 7 reveals.

“We always try to make sure that we are trying to touch the widest audience. I’ve had the pleasure of working on Call of Duty now for almost 20 years, and we’re constantly looking at ways to push into different audiences and fans, and that’s what you saw with that; there are fans that really love it. Obviously, there are fans who those may not be their favorite. We’re going to try to calibrate that as we move forward, and we take that feedback seriously. But again, we are trying to make sure that all fans feel represented in the game and figuring out that tight balance is something we’re paying attention to.”

Watch On

It’s the usual marketing-approved gobbledygook that almost sounds like something meaningful was said, but wasn’t: Activision has heard the complaints, is taking them “seriously,” and will “calibrate” going forward.

What sort of calibration it has in mind is open to interpretation, and non-specific enough that Blops 7 can still comfortably cash in on collaborations with cartoons, ’80s action heroes, and Amazon Originals without going against its stated stance.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

My read on it is that, while Call of Duty’s full-bodied embrace of goofy skins probably isn’t loved by many of the developers actually creating the art that gets slopped over by the Store tab, the backlash is not a particularly pressing concern for Activision at large. There are two sides to this, after all—lots of people enjoy uglifying their operators (to the tune of $20 per bundle).

There’s another wrinkle to Blops 7’s “calibrated” cosmetic plan: Starting with Season 1 of Blops 7, all weapons and cosmetics from Black Ops 6 will carry forward, inviting a tidal wave of fashion nightmares introduced over the previous 12 months to the new game.
