Monterrey 4-0 Urawa Reds (Jun 25, 2025) Game Analysis

by admin June 26, 2025

Monterrey booked a spot in the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup with a thumping 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday to claim second place in Group E and set up a last 16 meeting with Borussia Dortmund.

Three goals in eight first-half minutes sent Monterrey on their way to victory, with stunning long-range strikes from Nelson Deossa and Jesús Corona coming either side of German Berterame’s cool finish.

Deossa put Monterrey in front on the half-hour mark with a swerving shot from 35 yards and Berterame doubled the advantage four minutes later.

Corona added the third with the pick of the goals from distance in the 38th minute before Berterame added the fourth in second-half stoppage time.

The win, coupled with Inter Milan’s 2-0 victory over River Plate, means Monterrey finish second and will take on Dortmund in Atlanta on Tuesday.

“I’m really very happy we’re in the next stage,” said Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent. “On Saturday the club is celebrating 80 years so it’s a very special moment.

“We’re very happy because we have a clean sheet, it’s not easy in this group especially with the group that we had.”

Urawa, who were already eliminated after losing their opening two games, should have gone ahead midway through the first half when Ryoma Watanabe slid a pass through to Yusuke Matsuo but his poor first touch gave Ricardo Chavez enough time to block the goal-bound strike.

Monterrey’s opener came on the half-hour mark when central midfielder Deossa found space to hit a thunderous, swerving left-foot strike from midway inside the Urawa half that left goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa flapping.

Monterrey’s second came four minutes later as José Alvarado slipped a pass into Berterame, who bent a low shot into the bottom corner of the Urawa goal.

Worse was to come for the former Asian champions as Monterrey struck again from distance, Corona smashing his attempt from 30 yards out beyond Nishikawa’s dive.

Nishikawa prevented Monterrey from adding to the mauling early in the second half when he blocked Chavez’s effort, and Berterame missed out on his second when he pulled his shot wide in the 52nd minute.

Watanabe put a late free kick over the bar as the Japanese side looked for a consolation goal but Berterame slid in to stab the ball over from close range in the 97th minute to seal an emphatic Monterrey win.

Bayern 2-1 Boca (Jun 20, 2025) Game Analysis

by admin June 21, 2025

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Michael Olise fired Bayern Munich into the knockout stages of the Club World Cup, scoring in the 84th minute for a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors on Friday night.

German champion Bayern made it two wins in Group C and advanced to the round of 16 with a game to spare.

Olise secured the victory at Hard Rock Stadium after Miguel Merentiel had put Boca in position for a draw with a brilliant solo goal in the 66th.

Bayern, which tops the group, took the lead on Harry Kane’s clinical finish in the 18th and went on to miss of a slew of chances before Merentiel’s equalizer.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, we knew we were coming into a hostile environment, hot weather, it was tough,” Kane said. “It’s a massive tournament. We are playing against the best teams in the world. We just have to compete to our highest level and we should be able to beat most teams.”

The victory did come at a cost.

Star German midfielder Jamal Musiala went off injured only 25 minutes after entering the game and was substituted by national team veteran Thomas Müller in the 82nd minute.

The nature of his injury wasn’t immediately known. The 22 year-old had been recovering from a torn hamstring during the Bundesliga season.

Boca Juniors still have a chance to advance, but they would need to rout Auckland City on Tuesday and have Benfica lose to Bayern the same day.

“We have to find a way (to advance). A draw would’ve been great but it’s up to us to compete and do our best and I would not be surprised if that happened,” coach Miguel Angel Russo said.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Boca 2-2 Benfica (Jun 16, 2025) Game Analysis

by admin June 17, 2025

After Lionel Messi lit up the Club World Cup opener, Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium was awash in Argentine passion again as Boca Juniors fans turned it into a little Buenos Aires for their team’s 2-2 draw with Benfica on Monday.

A day after draping the shores of Miami Beach in blue and gold on the eve of their team’s debut, the Boca fans chanted their way into the arena and through the game, which put them in second place in Group C behind Bayern Munich after the German champions demolished Auckland City 10-0 on Sunday.

Both teams finished with 10 men after Benfica’s Andrea Bellotti and Boca’s Nicolas Figal picked up straight red cards in a heated contest that saw the Portuguese team cancel out a two-goal deficit.

Boca next face Bayern on Friday in Miami while Benfica will face Auckland City in Orlando, Florida.

After a scrappy opening 20 minutes, the stands trembled when Boca went ahead in the 21st as Lautaro Blanco’s low cross was met by Miguel Merentiel, triggering wild celebrations.

Nicolas Otamendi heads home the tying goal for Benfica in a Club World Cup game against Boca Juniors.

Six minutes later, the Argentine side doubled the tally with a Rodrigo Battaglia header, stunning Benfica, who had been dominating from the onset.

Nicolás Otamendi was then brought down in the box and Benfica earned a penalty following a VAR review and Ángel Di María coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to cut the goal deficit down to one at the stroke of halftime.

Former Manchester United star Ander Herrera, now with Boca and withdrawn after an early injury, was sent off at halftime for arguing the VAR call.

Benfica were down to 10 in the 70th after Bellotti was shown a straight red card for a high kick in the back of the head of Ayrton Costa. It was the first red card of the 31-year-old Belotti’s career.

The Portuguese side, however, levelled six minutes from time when Otamendi found the back of the net with a powerful header, with seven of his eight goals this season coming in such fashion.

The result kept the six-time Copa Libertadores champions’ hopes alive to advance into the knockout phase, which would be a boost for the tournament as South American fans are expected to bring the biggest amount of passion into the stadiums.

Mexico 3-2 Dominican Rep (Jun 14, 2025) Game Analysis

by admin June 15, 2025

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Defending champion Mexico overcame a slow start to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Saturday night in a Concacaf Gold Cup group stage match.

West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez added a goal in the 47th and defender César Montes got another one in the 53rd.

Jiménez now has 40 goals with the Mexican national team and is six away from Jared Borgetti, in second place on the career scoring list for El Tri. Javier “Chicharito” Hernández is Mexico’s top scorer with 52.

“It was a good win to start with. I congratulate my team, who maintained their emotional balance. It was a hard-fought, but fair victory,” said Mexico coach Javier Aguirre. “Our rival did a lot of merit, they demanded us, they did a good job.”

Mexico leads Group A with three points while the Dominican Republic is at the bottom. Costa Rica and Suriname, the other countries in the group, will face off on Sunday in Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

Raúl Jiménez scored his eighth Gold Cup goal to help Mexico beat the Dominican Republic.

“We were patient, we scored three goals and it was an attractive match for the fans, although there are things that need to be corrected,” Aguirre added.

Peter González in the 51st minute and Edison Azcona in the 67th scored for the Dominicans, who earned their first qualification as one of the four group winners in League B of the Concacaf Nations League.

The match was played at SoFi stadium before 54,309 fans, most of them rooting for Mexico.

There was uncertainty on how many Mexican fans would attend the match. On Friday, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum urged U.S. officials not to target individuals attending the game.

Dozens of workers have been detained by federal immigration authorities in a series of raids in LA’s fashion district and at Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. More than 100 people have been detained.

Mexico will try to qualify for the next round Wednesday when they play Suriname while the Dominican Republic will play Costa Rica. Both matches will be played at AT&T stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Portugal 2-1 Germany (Jun 4, 2025) Game Analysis

by admin June 5, 2025

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner as Portugal fought back to beat Germany 2-1 on Wednesday and reach the Nations League final.

Ronaldo became the oldest player to ever score against Germany while ending his “curse” against the country. The former Real Madrid star lost each of the previous five games he’d played against Germany, while Portugal hadn’t beaten the 2014 World Cup champions since 2000.

Germany dominated the first half, but it remained goalless thanks to the heroics of Portugal keeper Diogo Costa.

The shotstopper made an excellent start to the first half, keeping out a low shot from Germany’s Leon Goretzka after four minutes with a strong save.

Costa came to Portugal’s rescue again with an incredible save from Nick Woltemade’s close-range effort and two minutes later, he produced another quick reaction stop, diving low to tip away another attempt from Goretzka.

Germany took the lead in the 48th minute, as Florian Wirtz headed in unmarked in the box, following a pinpoint lobbed pass from Joshua Kimmich.

However, Portugal turned the match around, first equalizing through substitute Francisco Conceição in the 63rd minute.

Then Ronaldo, 40, captained Portugal and scored his 137th international goal five minutes after substitute Conceição had made it 1-1.

Portugal players celebrate after scoring a goal against Germany in the Nations League semifinals.

For Conceicao, the win carried extra significance, as his father Sergio scored a hat trick the last time Portugal beat Germany — at the European Championship in 2000.

“We need to enjoy the victory — we won for the first time in a while against Germany,” said Portugal coach Roberto Martinez. “Tactically we were exceptional and our commitment helped. It was a team victory.

“Now we can recover and evaluate. We want another performance with personality in this shirt.”

Germany looked to shift the momentum when substitute Karim Adeyemi unleashed a powerful rising strike with his left foot, only to see it crash against the outside of Costa’s right-hand post.

Vitinha excelled as Portugal finished the game in the ascendancy just four days after he helped Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League final against Inter Milan in the same stadium on Saturday.

Germany goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen made several great saves down the stretch to prevent the visitors from scoring any more.

PSG wing backs João Neves and Nuno Mendes both started for Portugal, while Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade started for his Germany debut.

Conceição needed only five minutes to make a mark with a brilliant long-range strike inside the far post after he surged past Robin Gosens like the defender wasn’t there. Mendes gave Ronaldo a simple finish five minutes after that.

“It could have been more,” Mendes said.

It was a disappointing 100th appearance for Germany captain Kimmich.

“The defeat is absolutely deserved,” Kimmich said. “We weren’t playing well enough in the first half. After going 1-0 up, nothing came of it in the second half.”

Spain and France will clash in the other semifinal in Stuttgart on Thursday to determine who will face Portugal, who won the inaugural edition of the Nations League in 2019, in the decider on Sunday.
