Nintendo denies lobbying over genAI, but stresses it will continue fighting IP infringement “whether AI is involved or not”

by admin October 5, 2025

Nintendo has denied reports that it has been lobbying Japanese lawmakers against generative AI, insisting it “has not had any contact with the Japanese government” about the highly controversial emerging tech.

The denial comes after Japanese politician Satoshi Asano posted an apology on social media after claiming Nintendo was lobbying the Japanese government. This was followed by a further apology earlier today, after which Satoshi deleted the original post.

While the megacorp typically declines to comment on speculation, on this occasion Nintendo was keen to shoot the rumour down and stressed that while it was not lobbying, “whether generative AI is involved or not, we will continue to take necessary actions against infringement of our intellectual property rights”.

“Contrary to recent discussions on the internet, Nintendo has not had any contact with the Japanese government about generative AI,” the company wrote.

Nintendo recently shared its thoughts on generative AI, and assured fans that its games will always have “a human touch”, with Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser saying: “We still believe that what makes our games special is our developers, their artistic capabilities, their insight into how people play. So, there’s always, always going to be a human touch, and a human engagement in how we develop and build our games.”

Nintendo’s position is at odds with many of its contemporaries. Back in 2024, Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu stated the company would be “aggressive in applying AI”, with developers admitting they “dabbled” with AI for the ill-fated shooter Foamstars, Professor Layton studio Level-5 has used AI tool Stable Diffusion, and even Capcom has admitted experimenting with generative AI too. Sega also has an in-house AI team.

In fact, a recent survey conducted by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), the organiser of Tokyo Game Show, showed that over half of Japanese game companies are using AI in their development.

U.S. CFTC Moves Toward Getting Stablecoins Involved in Tokenized Collateral Push

by admin September 23, 2025

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission is starting an initiative to allow stablecoins as tokenized collateral to satisfy margin needs in the vast derivatives market, inviting input from the industry on how to bring such a policy online.

In the latest move toward crypto inclusion in the U.S. financial sector, the acting chief of the CFTC, Caroline Pham, continues to advance policy in the absence of President Donald Trump’s current nominee to be the chairman, former Commissioner Brian Quintenz. As the confirmation process for Quintenz remains mired in delays and some open conflict, Pham has been regularly announcing initiatives as part of a “crypto sprint” and working with Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Paul Atkins.

“For years I have said that collateral management is the ‘killer app’ for stablecoins in markets,” Pham said in a Tuesday statement. “I’m excited to announce the launch of this initiative to work closely with stakeholders to enable the use of tokenized collateral including stablecoins.”

Pham had been pushing since last year for a so-called regulatory sandbox for tokenization, when she served as a commissioner during the previous administration, and when she took over as acting chairman, she announced the pursuit of a pilot program on stablecoin-backed tokenization.

Stablecoins, newly regulated under the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins Act (GENIUS) Act, are the dollar-based tokens that are key to the plumbing of crypto markets and smart-contract-driven digital finance. In an agency press release that also rounded up comments from Circle, Coinbase and Ripple executives, the CFTC said it’ll take written ideas until October 20.

The recent President’s Working Group report on crypto policy called on the CFTC to “provide guidance on the adoption of tokenized non-cash collateral as regulatory margin.”

According to Pham, “these market improvements will unleash U.S. economic growth because market participants can put their dollars to work smarter and go further.”

Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar is a good farming simulator, but it’s made great by its sense of community and willingness to get you involved

by admin August 31, 2025

Faming simulators are known for creating worlds for us to throw ourselves into, so it’s not too surprising that Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar—a remake of the 2010 DS game—follows suit. But, instead of just being your bog standard, friendly but still somewhat stand-offish farming simulator setting, there is something incredibly special about Zephyr Town. Whether you’re speaking to its human inhabitants or interacting with its nature sprites, it feels like everyone really has a place here, and before long it’ll sink its small town claws into you too.

It sounds pretty obvious, stating that every character in a game has a place there. But what I mean is everyone works in tandem with one another to create the kind of community spirit I haven’t experienced in a farming simulator before. Each character still has their own stories and routines, but their lives are so intertwined with one another it’s hard to really see them as standalone units. It feels different to a game like Stardew Valley, or even other Story of Seasons remakes—Friends of Mineral Town or A Wonderful Life—where each character knows what they’re doing, and sticks to it without showing much care for anyone else.

Each time you speak to someone in Zephyr Town, they’ll bring someone else into the conversation as soon as they get the opportunity. Whether that’s saying something along the lines of “did you hear what they said to that person?” or “I heard from so-and-so that you…” there’s always someone to talk about. These small interactions helped me feel far more involved in the going-ons of the community without having to constantly interact with each person. Even though that’s also made easier with the addition of the call out button, which lets you run past groups of people and greet them all in passing as your daily conversation.

Once I’d dealt with all my crops, pet and fed my animals, taken materials to the windmills to craft with, and stocked my stall for the upcoming bazaar, there was little to no time in a day for in-depth conversations with every single one of Zephyr Town’s inhabitants. I’d happily take the notes from other people if it meant I could still get all of my chores done before my stamina ran out and my avatar once again threatened to pass out.

There’s still the initial uncertainty of a new character infiltrating their town—there always is with games like this—so it takes time to develop these friendships. Depending on how often you’re stopping for a chat, it could be a while before you’re trusted enough by others for them to speak more openly about what’s happening. But once you’ve reassured the locals that you are capable of helping them re-establish the town as a solid location for a weekly bazaar, everyone is keen to learn more about you and is more than willing to stop for a conversation.

Interactions mentioning other people can sometimes be vital to getting information about the preferences of characters too, which is incredibly handy when you realise there are no guidebooks for gift giving here. There is little to no guidance on how to earn the affection of other characters, besides vague phrases like “Dislikes: quick bites” and “Likes: yellow.” Whereas the conversations you have as you develop deeper friendships will reveal things like a character’s favourite meal, or a fond memory they share involving a specific item you can conveniently craft in a windmill.

Outside of talking about one another, the community spirit is echoed through the favours you’re asked to complete and the events that occur throughout the year—helping the game feel more unified. For example, there’s a friendly rivalry between vendors at the bazaar to see who can make the most money (though conveniently, it’s always you) and everyone will always sing your praises if you win a competition such as the pet show or the horse derby.

If there’s one thing to remember though, it’s that no one in Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar misses an opportunity to talk about you either. The amount of times I’ve completely forgotten to check how much stamina I have before heading to the mountains to mine, and ended up hitting one too many rocks and passing out is frankly embarrassing. But to make matters worse, I haven’t just been able to dust myself off and get back to work the next day. Oh no. Every single character has been talking about you and what could’ve happened while you were out, and will express their concern to you whenever you get around to speaking to them next.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Occasionally you’ll get the odd telling off too, especially from Lloyd who, in his defence, does express the importance of not overworking yourself from the day you meet him. You’re bound to make some mistakes as a first time farmer. Yet as embarrassing as it was the first time this happened, it definitely made me feel like the people of Zephyr Town did care for their new resident. Not in an overbearing, doting way either. In the exact same way you’d care for a friend if they suddenly fell unwell in real life, which only reinforces this feeling of being so involved in their world.

Interpol Arrests 1,209 Involved In Illegal Crypto Mining And Investment Scams

The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has successfully conducted a continent-wide cybercrime crackdown in Africa, targeted against illegal cryptocurrency mining operations, inheritance scams, and fraudulent investments. Coordinated under the code name Serengeti 2.0, the three-month operation ran from June to August 2025, leading to more than 1,200 arrests and the recovery of close to $100 million in stolen funds and confiscated assets.

Operation Serengeti 2.0

According to Interpol’s press release on August 22, investigators from 18 African countries, working alongside the United Kingdom and supported by private-sector partners, dismantled 11,432 malicious infrastructures linked to almost 88,000 victims  of targeted high-impact online crimes, including ransomware, scams, and business email compromise (BEC).

Notably, law enforcement authorities in Angola shut down 25 illegal cryptocurrency mining sites operated by 60 Chinese nationals while also commandeering 45 unauthorized power stations feeding these operations. In addition, officers also confiscated IT and mining machinery worth over $37 million.

Meanwhile, in Zambia, officials uncovered a massive crypto investment fraud with 65,000 victims and $300 million in total losses. The operation led to 15 arrests, alongside the seizure of domains, SIM cards, and bank accounts tied to the scam, which had promised investors sizable returns. Notably, another sting in Lusaka disrupted a suspected human-trafficking network, where 372 forged passports of seven countries were confiscated.

Interpol also reports that the Ivorian police dismantled a cross-border inheritance scam believed to originate in Germany. Unsuspecting victims were deceived to pay fees for fake inheritance claims, generating around $1.6 million in illicit gains. The primary suspect in this case has been detained while authorities seized cash, jewelry, and vehicles, among other valuables.

Commenting on the successful Serengeti 2.0 operation, Interpol’s Secretary General, Valdecy Urquiza, emphasized the importance of cooperation in amplifying results:

Urquiza said:

Each INTERPOL-coordinated operation builds on the last, deepening cooperation, increasing information sharing, and developing investigative skills across member countries. With more contributions and shared expertise, the results keep growing in scale and impact

Operation Serengeti 2.0 was conducted under the African Joint Operation Against Cybercrime with other participating nations, including Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, etc. Meanwhile, private partners of this operation are TRM Labs, Trend Micro, and Team Cypru, among others.

Kick bans streamers involved in Jean Pormanove broadcasts as France vows “justice”

by admin August 20, 2025

Kick has responded to the death of French streamer Jean Pormanove by banning co-streamers involved in his controversial broadcasts.

On August 18, 46-year-old Raphaël Graven, better known online as Jean Pormanove, died in his sleep while streaming on Kick.

In the days leading up to his death, he was reportedly subjected to “ten days and nights of torture” from fellow streamers Naruto and Safine. The alleged abuse included extreme violence, sleep deprivation, and forced ingestion of toxic products.

A day later, French authorities opened a judicial investigation. Clara Chappaz, France’s minister for digital affairs and AI, said Pormanove had been “humiliated and mistreated for months live on Kick” and criticized the platform’s lack of intervention.

Viral clips circulating on social media show Pormanove being hit, strangled, and shot at with paintball guns while live on stream.

Kick issues bans and launches social media review

Kick’s French account has now confirmed that all streamers who participated in the broadcasts have been banned while the company conducts its own internal investigation.

“We are committed to fully cooperating with the authorities in this process,” the platform said.

The company also announced it had ended its collaboration with its former French social media agency after facing backlash for posts that used images of Pormanove to promote merchandise. Kick says it is conducting a full review of its French operations to prevent similar incidents.

“Our priority is to protect creators and ensure a safer environment on Kick,” the statement concluded.

The response has not silenced critics. Sarah El Haïry, France’s High Commissioner for Children, condemned Kick for failing to step in earlier.

“Platforms have an immense responsibility in regulating online content so that our children are not exposed to violent content,” she wrote on X.

Meanwhile, one of Pormanove’s accused abusers, Owen ‘Naruto’ Cenazandotti, has claimed he is now the victim of a “cyberbullying campaign.”

His lawyer announced that a complaint will be filed with the Paris Prosecutor’s Office’s cyberhate division targeting those who have harassed him since Pormanove’s death.

On August 20, Minister Chappaz echoed those statements and confirmed “an investigation is underway into the alleged actions of the streamers following reports by Mediapart, conducted by the Nice judicial police service under various charges.”

“Justice will carry out its work to advance this investigation and to clarify the tragic circumstances of Jean Pormanove’s death… All platforms have the legal responsibility to remove clearly illegal content of which they are aware,” she explained.

“The largest platforms also have the new responsibility to combat systemic risks such as the protection of minors, public health, or the safety of individuals. Investigations are underway regarding some of them.”

Kick star Adin Ross has called for “severe consequences” following Pormanove’s death. Ross also said he had spoken with rapper Drake, and together they will cover the streamer’s funeral expenses.

The situation has reignited long-standing concerns about Kick’s moderation policies. While the platform has made efforts to distance itself from controversial content in recent years, French officials are now demanding stronger safeguards in the wake of Pormanove’s death.
