Senator Accuses Crypto Billionaire of Dodging Puerto Rico Tax Evasion Investigation

by admin October 2, 2025

In brief

  • Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) alleged Wednesday that Pantera Capital founder Dan Morehead may have used Puerto Rican residency to improperly dodge U.S. taxes, and has avoided cooperating with an investigation into the matter for months.
  • In a letter sent this week, Wyden said Morehead’s attorneys “have all but disappeared” since pledging to cooperate with the inquiry in January.
  • Meanwhile, Pantera has greatly expanded its crypto footprint, including by launching a $1.25 billion Solana treasury company on Wall Street.

The top Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee has accused a prominent crypto investor of refusing to cooperate with an investigation into an alleged billion-dollar tax evasion scheme running through one of the digital asset community’s most popular enclaves: Puerto Rico.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) first opened an investigation into the finances of Pantera Capital founder Dan Morehead in January, as part of a broader inquiry into how “ultra-high net worth” Americans have used Puerto Rican residency as a means to obtain lucrative tax exemptions.

Wyden had not previously publicly announced that investigation until now, however. This week, the senator blasted Morehead in a published letter accusing the hedge fund manager and crypto investor of refusing to cooperate with the Senate’s investigation into his finances.

“While your attorneys initially suggested to my staff you were willing to cooperate with this inquiry, they have all but disappeared,” Wyden wrote, “heightening my concerns that you may have improperly avoided over $100 million dollars in federal taxes on capital gains that accrued while you still lived in San Francisco.”

The letter, sent to Morehead on Tuesday, said the crypto-focused venture capitalist may have received improper tax counsel which led him to obtain Puerto Rican residency shortly before earning hundreds of millions of dollars on the sale of a large Pantera position, and then declare that income exempt from U.S. taxes.

Wyden argued this was an incorrect interpretation of Puerto Rican tax law, which he said requires new residents of the island territory to pay U.S. taxes on such transactions for 10 years following their move.

“These are serious allegations of potential abuse of Puerto Rico tax incentives to avoid the payment of U.S. taxes that you must immediately address,” Wyden wrote.

Morehead did not respond to Decrypt’s request for comment on this story.

As the Trump administration has moved aggressively to create favorable conditions for crypto companies and investors, Morehead’s Pantera Capital has spun up several new ventures to take advantage of the moment.

The firm has spent hundreds of millions of dollars investing in Wall Street-traded digital asset treasury companies, which have taken off in popularity this year amidst promises of lucrative, risky returns. It recently launched a $1.25 billion effort to convert a publicly traded neurotechnology company into a massive Solana treasury.

Earlier this week, the company, Helius Medical Technologies—which once created medical devices designed to improve the lives of people with neurological diseases—formally changed its name to Solana Company. Tabs on the company’s website titled “Our Technology” and “Our Research” appear to have been deactivated.

JasonTheWeen says he was “never close” with D4vd amid ongoing investigation

by admin September 20, 2025

Twitch streamer JasonTheWeen has withdrawn his earlier support of singer D4vd after new evidence emerged in the investigation surrounding a body found in a vehicle registered to the artist.

On September 8, 2025, authorities discovered a body in the front trunk of a Tesla registered to D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke. The body was later identified as 15-year-old Celeste Rivas, who had been reported missing in April 2024.

Streamer walks back support after backlash

Having initially spoken in D4vd’s defense, Jason commented on the changing situation during a September 19 stream on his own channel, stating: “I do not condone anything that D4vd has done or is doing. That sh*t is wicked and just unbelievable.”

Jason, who collaborated with D4vd on the song Summer Uptown, had stated in a previous stream with Ludwig, that “He [D4vd] didn’t do it. He literally performed the next day. If he was a suspect, the police would have been after him.”

JasonTheWeen retracts his statement defending D4vd, clarifying they were never close friends, only collaborated on one song, and had dinner once.

He also states the Celeste he met on stream is not Celeste R. pic.twitter.com/wabcKhED5f

He also clarified that a girl named Celeste he had met previously at the FaZe House, was not the same person found in D4vd’s car.

The streamer continued, saying, “I’m not even close friends with D4vd. I made a song with him. I had dinner with him one time in a group setting. That’s it.”

D4vd has since canceled the remaining dates of his U.S. tour. The announcement came just hours after authorities confirmed the identity of the body. His team has not issued a public statement beyond confirming that he is cooperating with the investigation.

Costa Rican authorities raid hotel in Gardner investigation

Costa Rican authorities raid hotel in Gardner investigation

by admin September 12, 2025

Sep 11, 2025, 06:54 PM ET

Nearly six months after the death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, authorities in Costa Rica on Thursday raided the hotel in which the boy was found dead, and a prosecutor suggested the investigation could result in a manslaughter case.

In his first media interview about the case, prosecutor Kenneth Alvarez told ESPN on a video call that the three-hour raid at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio was to collect additional evidence related to what an autopsy determined to be Miller Gardner’s carbon monoxide death. It was the first formal search of the hotel since authorities went to the resort a week after the death.

“Let us remember that what was done at that time was the measurement of toxic substances at the site,” Alvarez told ESPN. “Based on those tests, a second proceeding was scheduled, which was carried out today to collect evidence.”

With television cameras waiting at the hotel entrance, three pickup trucks carrying agents from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) arrived to conduct the raid.

Alvarez, who has said the investigation centers on the potential allegations of manslaughter, told ESPN that authorities searched the offices of management, maintenance and accounting, retrieving physical and digital evidence. The prosecutor also said that several members of the hotel staff have been interviewed and “have always shown themselves to be collaborative.” There have been no arrests or charges in the case.

Brett Gardner could not be reached for comment Thursday, and a representative from the Yankees did not immediately respond.

Alvarez said Public Ministry officials have had “constant contact with the lawyers that the Gardner family hired in Costa Rica.”

“They knew about the operation, and we have remained in communication,” he said.

He added that authorities have coordinated with an FBI attaché in Costa Rica to help “guide the initial investigation and learn a bit about the profile of the persons.”

Miller Gardner died March 21 at the Costa Rican resort where he was staying with his family. Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, announced their youngest son’s death two days later in a statement released by the Yankees. According to the statement, Miller Gardner fell ill along with several other family members while on vacation.

Two days after that statement, a representative from the OIJ told ESPN that Miller Gardner and family members had “gone to eat at a restaurant and that the food had made them sick.” In that interview, the spokesperson said the OIJ considered asphyxiation before ruling it out. The OIJ later confirmed to ESPN by text message that investigators believed the death to be accidental rather than the result of foul play.

On April 2, authorities said the death was caused by carbon monoxide, which might have emanated from an adjacent “machine room.” In June, a representative from the prosecutor’s office told ESPN that the case remained under investigation and that prosecutors sought “to determine whether the cause of death was a homicide or not, and, if so, to establish responsibility.”

Miller Gardner played high school football in South Carolina and wore No. 11, which his father donned during 14 MLB seasons, all with the Yankees. Brett Gardner, a popular team leader, was a member of New York’s 2009 championship team and retired in 2021.

Nexon launches investigation into claims AI-generated The First Descendant ads were used on TikTok

by admin August 18, 2025

Nexon said it has launched an investigation after The First Descendant players noticed a number of seemingly AI-generated advertisements on TikTok, including one that used a content creator’s likeness without permission.

The developer/publisher issued a statement after Reddit user iHardlyTriHard penned a viral post collating four AI-like advertisements they had found after “only 10-15 minutes” browsing their For You Page.

The statement did not apologize directly for the AI advertisements but did apologize for “the delay in providing notice as the [investigative] review is taking longer than expected.” Nexon did not, however, explain when it was notified of the adverts, or when it launched its review.

Nexon said it wanted to “inform [players] of certain irregularities identified in the operation of [its] TikTok Creative Challenge for creators,” and said the campaign “allows creators to voluntarily submit their content to be used as advertising materials.” It also stressed that all submitted videos had been “verified through TikTok’s system.”

“However, we have become aware of cases where the circumstances surrounding the production of certain submitted videos appear inappropriate,” the statement added. “Thus, we are conducting a thorough joint investigation with TikTok to determine the facts.

“We sincerely apologize for the delay in providing this notice as the review is taking longer than expected. Once the verification is complete, we will promptly share an update through an official notice. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Nexon has yet to respond to DanieltheDemon’s public claim that he “did not consent for my likeness to be used.”
