Spanish bank BBVA advises wealthy clients to invest in Bitcoin: report

Spanish banking giant BBVA is reportedly advising its wealthiest clients to buy Bitcoin, just months after announcing plans to offer cryptocurrency trading to its customers.

According to a report by Reuters, BBVA has advised its top money clients to have 3% to 7% of their portfolio allocated to Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies. 

The suggested allocation depends on an investor’s risk appetite, said Philippe Meyer, Head of Digital & Blockchain Solutions at BBVA Switzerland. Speaking at the DigiAssets conference in London, Meyer revealed that the bank has been advising its private clients on BTC investment since September 2024.

“The riskier profile, we allow up to 7% of crypto,” Meyer noted.

The Spanish lender announced announced plans to offer crypto trading and custody services to customers in Spain. The initial rollout allowed a select group of private clients to purchase Bitcoin Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH), with full access gradually expanding to all private banking customers.

BBVA’s move to actively recommend crypto exposure aligns with a growing trend among traditional financial institutions.

Notably, the European Securities and Markets Authority has previously warned that crypto could pose risks to the global financial stability. An ESMA report also noted that most EU banks do not engage in crypto activities. Despite this, the overall sentiment is that more and more are willing to make a foray. Market experts believe its a matter of time before banks begin to stockpile Bitcoin.

BBVA, on its part, has executed client requests for BTC purchases since 2021 when it launched bitcoin trading for private clients in Switzerland.

Elsewhere in the industry, JPMorgan recently announced it would allow clients to buy and hold Bitcoin. While CEO Jamie Dimon has long been a vocal crypto skeptic, he acknowledged earlier this year that he would defend the right of the bank’s customers to access digital assets.

JPMorgan has also said it will accept spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as collateral for loans to wealthy clients. BlackRock’s BTC ETF will reportedly be the first accepted for this initiative.

ARK Invest Offloads Over $50M in Circle (CRCL) Shares as Stock Extends Rally

Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest trimmed its holdings on its sizable Circle (CRCL) position Monday, selling $51.8 million worth of shares, as the stablecoin issuer’s stock extended its rally.

ARK sold a total of 342,658 shares across three of its actively managed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), according to a daily email. The ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) offloaded 196,367 shares, ARKW sold 92,310 and ARKF trimmed 53,981.

Circle, the issuer of the USDC stablecoin, rose 13% on the day, closing Monday in New York at $151.06. It has gained every day but two since it listed on June 5. The shares have climbed almost fivefold from their IPO price of $31.

ARK bought $373 million worth of Circle on its first day of trading on the NYSE.

Wood’s fund also recently trimmed positions in other crypto-linked firms like Coinbase (COIN) and Robinhood (HOOD).

Ripple to invest $5M to Asia-Pacific blockchain research

Ripple Labs will invest $5 million to strengthen blockchain education and research across the Asia-Pacific region.

According to a June 10 announcement on the company’s blog, Ripple is expanding its University Blockchain Research Initiative in Asia-Pacific with a new $5 million investment. The fund will support academic research and student-led innovation in six countries. This marks Ripple’s latest move to grow its influence in a region known for progressive fintech regulation and rapid digital asset adoption.

Through UBRI, Ripple is deepening ties with top institutions in South Korea, Japan, and Singapore, while forging new partnerships in Taiwan and Australia. The funding brings Ripple’s total UBRI contribution in Asia to over $11 million since launch, reflecting its long-term focus on building a pipeline of blockchain talent and real-world applications using the XRP (XRP) Ledger.

In Taiwan, Ripple is partnering with the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology to research real-world asset tokenization across XRPL, Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL). The grant will also support a student builders club and validator node on XRPL.

Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University received a grant to build an autonomous AI agent network on XRPL, while Ripple renewed its support for the National University of Singapore, where past UBRI funding led to the first university-based DAO in Asia.

In South Korea, a renewed $1.1 million partnership with Korea University will fund advanced blockchain research, alongside ongoing initiatives at Yonsei and Hanyang universities, including privacy-enhancing zk-SNARKs and layer-2 scaling technologies.

Australia’s Victoria University joins UBRI with a focus on blockchain curriculum development, while the Australian National University will continue research into blockchain law and smart contract platforms like Evernode.

Ripple’s UBRI expansion complements other recent Asia-Pacific ventures. These include the XRPL Japan and Korea Fund launched in 2024 to support local developers, a partnership with Web3 Salon in Japan to fund XRPL startups, and Ripple’s role as an anchor investor in HashKey Capital’s XRP Tracker Fund, Asia’s first institutional fund focused on XRP.

This year’s UBRI Connect event will take place at XRP Ledger Apex, with a pre-summit hosted at NUS, stressing the region’s growing role in global blockchain research and adoption.

NewGenIvf to invest $30m in Solana staking strategy

NewGenIvf Group Limited, a leading fertility services provider in Asia, announced plans to invest $30 million in Solana staking, deepening its expansion into the blockchain sector.

The move follows a $1 million investment in Bitcoin (BTC) made by NewGen in December 2024. 

This latest decision marks a significant increase in its digital asset exposure. The company said the $30 million investment will be financed through existing credit lines with ATW and White Lion.

Solana (SOL), renowned for its high-speed transactions and expanding decentralized app ecosystem, enables token holders to earn staking rewards while supporting the network’s operations.

CEO Siu Wing Fung Alfred described the investment as a “natural evolution” of the firm’s digital asset strategy and a way to diversify NewGen’s portfolio. 

Long term value in DeFi and staking

He highlighted the company’s belief in the long-term value of decentralized finance and the potential for shareholder returns through staking.

As part of this strategic shift, NewGen will form a dedicated subsidiary to manage its digital asset activities, separating its blockchain investments from its core fertility business, which operates clinics in Thailand, Cambodia, and Kyrgyzstan.

While NewGen remains focused on reproductive services, the company’s increasing exposure to blockchain investments signals its intent to capitalize on emerging technologies for long-term growth. 

Interest from corporations in digital assets is increasing, with public companies allocating Bitcoin and Ethereum to their balance sheets, according to a recent report from Binance. 

Last week, Trump Media and Technology Group closed a $2.44 billion private placement with approximately 50 institutional investors, aiming to establish one of the largest Bitcoin treasuries among publicly traded U.S. companies.
