Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 players hopping into the beta right now are taking in all the sights of Activision’s upcoming AAA FPS, though one thing they won’t be able to see is the name of another massive release coming out this year. That’s because the words: “Arc Raiders” are censored in the game’s chat function.

Censoring words in-game isn’t anything new, and is usually used to block out profanity, toxic terminology, and other potentially offensive words from multiplayer lobbies. Blocking out game names is a strange one though, especially given the fact that Black Ops 7’s biggest competitor this year Battlefield 6 is not censored. It’s worth noting the words “Arc” and “Raiders” on their own don’t get censored, it’s only when you put them both together where censoring occurs.

A clip of this censorship in-action has been circulating online, and Eurogamer confirmed that the term Arc Raiders is starred out in the Black Ops 7 beta. Funnily enough, Arc Raiders players found the term “Arc Raiders” also got automatically censored from the EA App chat feature, while other game names like Call of Duty did not. This was quickly patched out once publicised.

Aside from this small, peculiar quirk, the Call of Duty beta seems to be going down rather well. Over the weekend new tweaks and game modes were added to the game to the joy of its community, and while there were initial reports of cheaters running rampant, Activision has claimed the vast majority of them have been dealt with.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is set to release on the 14th November, so this early taste of the game is meant to test features out and tide the ravenous FPS community over until next month. Arc Raiders, on the other hand, is set to release on the 30th October, and has an open beta on the weekend starting the 17th October. It’s brilliant fun and well worth trying out, at least if the first beta was any indication of quality.

Eve Vanguard is a strange proposition: part-MMO, part-FPS, part-companion game to the seemingly eternal juggernaut that is Eve Online, it’s developer CCP’s latest attempt to make a shooter that works as part of the storied universe. And I think, so far, it shows a lot of promise. The potential in Vanguard is the result of a passionate team being given (relatively) free rein to do what they want, as long as it’s fun and abides by the Eve bible. In a world where many developers are looking at smaller games with shorter development cycles, Vanguard’s gestation time – and trust from its parent company – is an increasingly rare thing.

But it’s driven by trust, and a genuine desire to see something like Vanguard finally take off. Bigwigs at CCP have told me, directly, that getting a shooter in the world of Eve to work is “an age-old dream CCP has been wanting to realise.” And it’s not for lack of trying. Previously, we’ve had Dust 514, the cult MMOFPS PS3 game that CCP worked on with Sony in 2013, which shut down in 2016. Since then, we’ve heard about both Project Nova and Project Legion, neither of which made it to release. Now, there’s Vanguard – a game I’ve personally been following for quite some time.

As such, I’ve seen the development process first-hand, seen how the ambitious shooter fleshes out. I’ve played it when the guns didn’t even really have models, when enemies were just amorphous grey blobs. But CCP London has been open about it every step of the way – and when it unveiled the new direction (more 00s space shooter than bland military sim), I was thrilled. It offered something different: a take on the Tarkov-like shooter that puts fun before punishment.

Now, the developer is ready to show off the next aspect of its vision: from the FPS side to the MMO side. Right now, there’s a flotilla of dissatisfied players from Destiny 2 looking for a new home. Marathon’s internal and external issues are well-documented, and it doesn’t bode well for launch. There’s Arc Raiders, which has some hype, and Helldivers 2 continues to dominate the landscape, but there’s just about enough room for Vanguard to muscle in on the action, thinks CCP London. But the social aspect of these games is skinnier than what Davis envisions for Vanguard.

This past week, Vanguard launched ‘Operation Nemesis’, a huge update that was designed to explain the tenets of the game. It has a complete tutorial, a taster of the sort of content you can expect in the final game, and – perhaps most importantly – a live environment where you can meet, interact with (and perhaps get absolutely obliterated by) other players. Generally speaking, when you’re on the ground, you’re fair game: you can work with other teams to extract loot and materials – a rising tide helps all ships, so they say – or you can be a dick and eliminate another team and snatch their loot. It’s the PvPvE way, alas, and has a high-percent chance of being incredibly toxic. But therein, perhaps, lies the fun.

“There are some safeguards we can already draw in,” explains Scott Davis, game director on Eve Vanguard. “Eve Online already has this concept of high-sec, low-sec and null-sec.” For clarity, high security spaces have a higher presence of NPC enforcement troops, which diminish as you go down in classification – mess with other players in high-sec, and you’re going to get some bad attention. “You always start at high-sec, and you tend to be moving into low-sec areas. And that helps to give some guardrails or some safety nets around the more player-versus-player driven parts of the game. We’ll be using those same aspects in Vanguard.”

Some of the persistent, strategic zones (which are called ‘bastions’ in Vanguard parlance) will, therefore, have no PvP at all. If you don’t want to get ganked whilst going on a nice mining mission to pick up some ore, you can chill out there. “I play Final Fantasy 14 like a single-player game,” explains Davis, “just with lots of other people around me. And it feels richer because of that. And that’s something I think we can lean into.” That’s what these high-sec ‘bastions’ will look like: pleasant MMO hubs, with “me and my friends running around, doing lots of PvE things”. It’s “mingleplayer”, says Davis.

I love that term: that’s how I spent a lot of my time in both Destiny and FF14. In Destiny, I’d often go off and play PvP as a lone wolf, head back to The Tower, dance with some randos, and then jet off to do some strikes. Seeing other people going about their business was all part of the joy. In Final Fantasy 14, I liked to play a chef; getting ingredients and cooking dishes for players before hitting up a raid. It’s a good way to make friends. But any game operating in an online space has the potential for bad behaviour. That’s not a problem for Vanguard, though.

“But even in that first bastion, you’ll be aware that there are these high-sec planets and low-sec planets and null-sec planets. So if you want to be an absolute bastard, there are specific places you can go to do that. And then anyone who goes there knows that there’s a higher propensity for bastardry in those spaces.”

But that’s not to say that the high-sec portions of the game will be completely safe for the pacifists amongst us. “We’re also thinking, ‘how can we make high-sec cool?’,” explains Davis. “The idea that I shoot you but I’m just not dealing damage to you is an easy way of solving that problem, but are there much more interesting ways of doing that? I think there are. In Eve Online, you can destroy other ships, but then you get a ‘wanted level’, and then police are after you – what if, in these high-sec worlds, you can kill another player, but then all this stuff happens.

“Suddenly, a Space Police Concord drops right next to you. You show up on the map. Security forces announce: ‘right, everyone’s got infinite respawns until this person dies!’ It takes me back to playing DayZ, when you get a player-killer on the server, and then all of a sudden the whole server now wants to rally against the player killer. It’s putting more power into the people to solve the problem. It dissuades you from wanting to do PvP, but sometimes you might just think, ‘I want to cause that to happen. I want a big fight, I want the whole server against me’.”

One of the very Eve Online anecdotes I was told at CCP’s studio is that, recently, the leader of an in-game corporation sided with another corporation out of nowhere. This person started deleting the assets of all the other corporations before he was caught. It was a scandal. “That’s not something you would ever engineer,” laughs Davis. “There’s a system that you make and players just rip, tear, and rend in their own way.”

It very much sounds like CCP London wants to take that philosophy from the main Eve game and shape it into something that works in an MMOFPS. As we see Helldivers 2 devs act like dungeon masters as players opt to cause in-universe havoc, and people bounce off Destiny 2 as its narrative and development direction feels increasingly out-of-touch with the players, it’s a fascinating prospect. Of course, it’s still early days and there is plenty that will be ironed out as the game heads towards a proper early access release next year, but for now, I’m very much picking up what Vanguard is putting down. I just hope it can stick the landing.

The president of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Lula) has signed a ban on loot boxes for under 18s into law. This ban is set to go into effect in March 2026.

This ban comes as part of a wider digital protection law aimed at protecting young people from abuse and exploitation online. Chapter seven of the law focused on electronic games prohibits loot boxes aimed at children or adolescents for games without an 18+ age rating.

In addition, the law requires games that are likely to have adolescents interact with other people through text, audio, or video messages to adhere to legal safeguards. These include a report system, information on the progress of said reports, and instruments to request review and reconsideration of imposed penalties.

Debates surrounding a loot box ban have been widespread and global for years now. Back in 2022 Dutch political parties backed a loot box ban, however after some deliberation there was no outright ban. Loot boxes were declared illegal in Belgium back in 2018, though in the following years it’s become clear this hasn’t been strictly enforced. The UK has slapped some game companies on the wrist due to not declaring loot boxes in advertisements, but a ban has been far from reach.

As such, this Brazilian ban for under 18s is a big step forward for those against loot boxes, putting up barriers between what many consider gambling mechanics and younger people. It’s been a long time coming, with investigations into loot boxes starting in 2021. There remain two larger questions: will clear age ratings for games actually prevent young people from buying loot boxes in games they want, and will this law’s implementation in a strong market for video games influence change in the industry at large?

Epic Games to allow Fortnite developers to sell in-game items

From December, Fortnite creators will be able to sell items directly from their Fortnite islands.

Epic Games announced the new in-game sales feature on September 18, 2025, revealing that creators will be able to create and sell “digital durable and consumable items they build for their games,” using Verse-based API and new UEFN tools. They can’t, however, sell physical items, such as t-shirts.

While developers will “ordinarily” earn 50% of the V-Bucks value from item sales, from December 2025 until December 2026, the rate will be 100%.

However, that doesn’t mean they’ll creators will earn 100% of sales revenue.

In the press release announcing this new sales feature, Epic Games explained how the share of in-game sales is distributed to creators.

To determine the V-Bucks value in US dollars in a given month, the company totals all customer real-money spending on V-Bucks (converted to US dollars) and then subtracts platform and store fees. These can range from 12% on the Epic Game Store to 30% on current consoles. Epic Games then divides this by the total V-Bucks spent by Fortnite players.

Fortnite’s average platform and store fees are currently 26%, Epic Games said, with “specific fees” ranging from 12% to 30% on consoles.

So, from December 2025 to December 2026, the 100% V-Bucks value creators will earn will translate to a roughly 74% cut of in-game sales.

From January 1, 2027, however, that amount will drop by half, a 50% V-Bucks value equating to a roughly 37% cut of in-game sales for creators.

Epic Games said the other 50% enables the company “to cover the costs of servicing the Fortnite ecosystem.”

“The funds that don’t go back to creators contribute to server hosting costs, safety, and moderation costs, R&D and other operating expenses,” Epic Games said. “In recent years, Epic has been investing and operating the business at a loss.”

In addition, Epic Games is updating its engagement payout formula, which issues payouts to creators based on engagement in their islands, to “better reward creators for bringing in new or reengaging lapsed players in Fortnite.”

The current payout formula adds 40% of the net revenue from Fortnite’s Item Shop and related real-money purchases into the engagement pool, which is distributed among creators’ and Epic’s islands.

But, from November 1, 2025, Fortnite creators “that bring in new or lapsed players” will receive 75% of those players’ contributions to the engagement payout pool for their first six months.

To identify players and islands that fall under this banner, Epic Games will factor in “signals from direct links, in-game search usage, and first-day playtime patterns.”

Epic Games is also changing the retention component of these engagement payouts, now rewarding “island-specific retention, rather than ecosystem-wide retention” to “better align with creators’ own efforts in growing this metric.”

However, to combat fraudulent engagement, this engagement payout formula will only consider players who have made purchases on their accounts.

Epic Games has said this will “not reduce the total engagement payout pool,” it instead “shifts the calculation” so that the playtime of non-payers isn’t considered.

As such, the engagement payout formula now covers minutes played, new user acquisition, lapsed user acquisition, playtime surrounding V-Bucks spend, and island retention.

Epic Games is also introducing a “prominent” Sponsored Row in Discover on November 24 2025, so that “creators can choose to spend money to receive increased visibility for their islands.”

“All creators will have transparent market data to bid for placement in the row and enter an auction to surface islands in the new Sponsored Row,” Epic Games said. “All other rows in Discover will remain unchanged, continuing to provide organic visibility to islands.”

In the “long-term,” 50% of revenue from sponsorship generated by this feature will go into the engagement payout pool, but from launch until the end of 2026, 100% will enter the pool.

Other creator-focused additions coming to Fortnite include the ability for creators to set up campaigns in the creator portal, starting November 17, 2025, and the launch of Fortnite Creator Communities “in the next few months,” allowing creators to connect and share updates with their players.

“Since UEFN launched, players have spent over 11.2 billion hours across 260,000 live creator-made islands, which has resulted in $722,000,000 paid out to date,” Epic Games said.

“We’ll continue investing in new tools that unlock more development possibilities for creators.”

Fortnite creators will soon be able to sell in-game items to make more money, but are Creative Mode offerings like Steal A Brainrot what players want?

Epic will soon allow Fortnite developers to sell in-game items from their Fortnite islands, allowing creators to make more money.

This will begin in December 2025, and for the first year developers will earn 100 percent of the V-Bucks value from sales – usually this is at 50 percent.

The news comes as Fortnite’s Creative Mode of fan-made content is proving exceptionally popular – recently, the Fortnite version of Roblox meme game Steal A Brainrot had more concurrent players than Epic’s official maps.

Fortnite’s Creative Mode first launched back in 2018, and allows players to create their own maps and modes. Epic then offers a payout based on engagement – last year it paid out $325m to creators, with seven receiving over $10m.

Since Creative Mode’s release, Epic has revealed, players have spent over 11.2bn hours across 260,000 creator-made islands, resulting in $722,000,000 paid to creators.

The amount of money creators will make in Fortnite is only going to increase when they’re able to sell in-game items directly from their islands, in addition to receiving an engagement payout from Fortnite’s item shop sales.

Epic has a formula for calculating the V-Bucks value in US dollars each month, which takes all real-money spending towards V-Bucks (in dollars), subtracting platform and store fees, and dividing by total V-Bucks spent. With creators usually earning 50 percent of V-Bucks value from sales, this equates to 37 percent of retail spending. Roblox offers 25 percent, by way of comparison.

In addition, Epic will add a Sponsored Row to Fortnite’s Discover, meaning creators can pay for increased visibility by bidding for placement in the row. That’s a further investment in generating more in-game sales.

Epic has also announced Fortnite Creator Communities, to allow creators to share updates directly with players on the web and within Fortnite. Creator posts will be text and image-based and allow for sharing information and gathering feedback – much like on Steam.

But despite the huge success of creator islands, is this really what Fortnite players want?

Take Steal A Brainrot. It’s proven to be a phenomenal success – as Dexerto reported, it had 24 million players in a single day across both Roblox and Fortnite versions. While the Roblox version peaked at 23.4 million players in a day, Fortnite’s version contributed 542,000. That vastly outweighs Fortnite’s primary Battle Royale modes that generate around 100,000 players during peak weekend play.

“They are promoting AI slop, copy and paste creative maps more than their own BR season,” wrote one player on reddit. “This is going to prove to be extremely unhealthy for the game in general I believe, and with the already low player counts this season Epic needs to do something to steer back to the basics, this metaverse stuff has RUINED Fortnite. This game has become a corporate shell of what it once was and I believe the remainder of this year will very much so make or break Fortnite as a whole.”

“Stuff like this cluttering the overview makes me disinterested in random creative maps. Those who put genuine effort into their maps often get hardly any attention,” wrote a user on a separate reddit post. Others point to the casual nature of user-made maps, as well as the high XP offered, as reasons for players to flock over.

Still, this new update for Fortnite creators is further shifting the game away from its Battle Royale roots into a Roblox-rivalling metaverse.

Creators building experiences in Fortnite are getting a new way to earn revenue. Epic says developers will soon have the ability to make and sell in-game items in Fortnite, and earn a cut of the V-Bucks users spend to buy them. Previously, developers only earned money through Fortnite based on the amount of time users spent on their “islands,” the in-game name for third-party experiences creators can offer through Fortnite.

Developers will be able to create their consumable and durable in-game items using soon-to-be-released tools in Unreal Editor for Fortnite and a new “Verse-based API,” according to Epic. The company also plans to be generous with the revenue split its offering, at least at first. Developers “will ordinarily earn 50 percent of the V-Bucks value from sales in their islands,” but from December 2025 through the end of 2026, they’ll get to keep 100 percent.

Epic says its 50 percent cut — notably more than the 30 percent popularized by Apple’s App Store — is to help “contribute to server hosting costs, safety and moderation costs, R&D and other operating expenses” of running Fortnite. It’s also a make-good of sorts, since Epic claims it’s been “investing and operating the business at a loss.”

How much 100 percent or 50 percent of “V-Bucks value” actually equals in real money unfortunately isn’t as simple as converting Fortnite’s digital currency to dollars, though. Epic offers the following explanation for how it calculates V-Bucks value:

Alongside the new ability to create in-game items, Epic says Fortnite developers will be able to pay to be featured in a new “Sponsored row” inside Fortnite‘s Discover feed. And to better engage new and returning players, developers are also getting access to new tools for creating community forums and sharing updates on their islands.

All of these changes are in service of further extending Fortnite‘s ability to act as a platform for games and social experiences, rather than just a battle royale game (with racing, rhythm game and LEGO spin-offs). Epic clearly wants Fortnite to be Roblox, and reap the benefits of having an active community of adult and child users creating experiences for its platform. Cultivating that audience has led to all sorts of child safety problems for Roblox, but Epic clearly views the risks to be worth it.

Nintendo patents in-game characters summoning others to battle

Nintendo has secured a new patent that protects a common gameplay mechanic wherein an in-game character to summon another sub-character to support it in battle.

As noted by Games Fray, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted Nintendo patent number 12,403,397 on September 2, 2025. Submitted in March 2023, the patent application was approved uncontested despite the mechanic already existing in prior games, both within and outside of Nintendo’s own portfolio.

This means games that use features like those detailed below could now be in breach of Nintendo’s copyright.

  1. There must be a PC, console, or other computing device, and the game is stored on a drive or similar storage medium.
  2. You can move a character in a virtual space.
  3. You must be able to summon a character. They call it a “sub character” by which they mean it’s not the player character, but, for example, a little monster such as a Pokémon that the player character has at their disposal.
  4. Then the logic branches out, with items 4 and 5 being mutually exclusive scenarios, before reuniting again in item 6.
  5. This is about summoning the “sub character” in a place where there already is another character that it will then (when instructed to do so) fight.
  6. This alternative scenario is about summoning the “sub character” at a position where there is no other character to fight immediately.
  7. This final step is about sending the “sub character” in a direction and then letting an automatic battle ensue with another character. It is not clear whether this is even needed if one previously executed step (4) where the “sub character” will basically be thrown at another character.

As Games Fray stressed, the ramifications for the wider industry cannot be understated, and may now prompt other developers and publishers, in turn, to file patents to protect other common in-game mechanics.

“The ‘397 patent poses a fundamental threat to creativity and innovation in the games industry,” the report stated. “That question is not specific to [the existing copyright lawsuit concerning] Palworld, but to a large number of games that already have that mechanic as well as future releases that will have it.”

GTA 6 leak reveals potential in-game sites that parody Uber and more

A number of in-game websites and apps which may well be a part of GTA 6 have leaked, and they appear to parody the likes of Uber and WhatsApp.

A post on the GTA Forums from insider Tez2 (known for their Rockstar tips) revealed they had come across “domains all registered on May 27 under Take-Two’s nameservers” which they believe relate to Grand Theft Auto 6.

“These domains could be in-game sites that [Rockstar] may redirect to 6’s page later on, like what we’ve seen with 4 and 5,” they wrote.

These sites are:

  • what-up.app
  • rydeme.app
  • buckme.app
  • leonidagov.org
  • brianandbradley.com
  • hookers-galore.com
  • wipeoutcornskin.com

What-up.app is a name you may recognise. This chap was uncovered in the GTA 6 leaks from 2022, and is supposed to be the copycat for Whatsapp.

Some in the GTA Forums have surmised that rydeme will be an Uber-like app, and buckme could be something along the lines of a Patreon or PayPal equivalent (though, my first thought was some kind of deliverable bucking bronco like rodeo stall you find in Western bars). Hookers-galore seems pretty self explanatory.

Some have speculated that brianandbradley.com, meanwhile, is a spin on Florida law firm Morgan and Morgan, which despite where my Rockstar trained mind went, is unrelated to Red Dead’s Arthur Morgan. Anyway, I had a quick google, and apparently historically Morgan and Morgan is considered a firm focused on personal injury, medical malpractice and class action lawsuits. Personal injury sounds like something many GTA characters will be dealing with, so that would fit.

Again, there is nothing official to say these apps and websites will definitely appear in GTA 6, but it doesn’t seem unreasonable to imagine Jason and Lucia using an app to call a car to take them across Vice City.
