China's inaugural 'Robot Olmypics' delivers impressive feats and disastrous falls

by admin August 17, 2025

The first-ever World Humanoid Robot Games have come to a close with some new world records, but don't expect them to beat humans in a 100-meter dash any time soon. The three-day robotics event in Beijing, China that saw humanoid robots compete in everything from boxing to cleaning concluded this weekend. According to the World Humanoid Robot Games, more than 280 teams from 16 countries, including the US, Germany, Brazil and the host country, entered their robots into the event.

A majority of the teams came from universities, but several teams came from established robotics companies like Unitree and Fournier Intelligence. Hundreds of robots competed in traditional sporting events like running, soccer and table tennis, along with events for more practical tasks, like cleaning or sorting medicine. Unitree snagged gold medals in four categories, including the 1,500-meter, 400-meter, 100-meter, and 4×100-meter dash events. According to Unitree, the fastest speed achieved by one of its robots during the event was 4.78 m/s, which is roughly 10 mph.

In the 100-meter sprint, Unitree boasted a 33.71-second time, but that's nowhere near the world record holder Usain Bolt's time of 9.58 seconds, which was achieved in 2009. Instead, most teams took this event as an opportunity to showcase the abilities of their designs, while also stress-testing their robots in a competitive environment. We're still a long way from widespread adoption of these humanoid bots though, especially if they can't avoid running into each other.

Tesla’s inaugural Robotaxi rides will have a human ‘safety monitor’ on board

by admin June 22, 2025

A select few will soon get to experience Tesla’s robotaxi service for the first time, but they won’t be alone in the car. The company plans to launch its fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Austin, Texas tomorrow, but a “Tesla Safety Monitor” will accompany the first riders, according to email invitations sent out to “Early Access Riders.” It’s unclear what capabilities the safety monitor will have, but they will sit in the front passenger seat of a self-driving Model Y.

The email outlined several parameters, including that users were limited to a geofenced area that excludes airports, could run into unavailability due to bad weather and can only hail a robotaxi between 6 am and midnight. This restrictive launch will reportedly only offer 10 cars and comes after a delay from an initial launch date on June 12.

With the official date set, Tesla will only offer its robotaxi service with its Model Y for now. This robotaxi service will lay the groundwork for an eventual Cybercab release, which isn’t expected to start production until at least 2026, according to the company. For now, Tesla’s robotaxi service will face competition from Waymo, which started offering its competiting services in March to Austin residents.

Neowiz signs global rights to Shadowlight’s inaugural game, Kill the Shadow

by admin June 5, 2025

Lies of P publisher Neowiz has signed a deal with Shadowlight for the global rights of the studio’s inaugural game, Kill the Shadow.

As spotted by GamesBeat, the Shanghai studio said Neowiz shared its “philosophy on game development,” and emphasized the publisher’s openness to collaborating.

“What initially drew us to Shadowlight was a collaborative development philosophy to deliver premium narrative games for PC and console audiences,” said Neowiz CEO, Kim Seung-chul.

“We look forward to working closely with the team to release Kill the Shadow globally, and we hope audiences find the same charm we experienced as we reveal more about the title.”

CEO of Shadowlight said of the deal: “Neowiz is a reliable global publisher, and we were grateful to find a partner who shares our philosophy on game development. As we see the games industry evolve to be inclusive of other cultures, it’s important to have a publisher that is open to collaborating and emphasizing the significance of your content.”

Neowiz similarly signed a $8 million deal with Warsaw-based developer Zakazane at the end of last year to publish its upcoming neo-Western RPG. In 2023, Neowiz invested $17 million in Polish developer Blank Game Studios. It also acquired a 21% stake in the developer.
