10 years after it launched, one of the best roguelikes of all time gets a surprise update on Steam with quality of life improvements and a new controls menu

by admin June 25, 2025

It was 2015—10 years ago—that we called Nuclear Throne “a crowning achievement for Vlambeer, and one of the finest action-roguelikes ever made” in our 90% review. Seven years later, in 2022, we said it was still the best roguelike around. And now, in 2025, eight years after its last update, Nuclear Throne has suddenly sprung back to life.

“Good news for (future) Nuclear Throne fans: there’s an updated beta build on Steam with many quality of life improvements like 120fps support, different aspect ratios, and a new controls menu!” Vlambeer wrote in a surprise announcement on Bluesky. “Oh, and a new melting loading screen tip. 😎

Vlambeer celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020 by closing its doors, not over any discord between co-founders Rami Ismail and Jan Nijman, but simply because it felt like the “natural” thing to do at that point in their careers. Four years later, however, it was back, although without Ismail, who sold his half of the studio to Nijman. And Nijman has apparently decided to go back to where it all began.

The studio said in a separate post that it would “be nice” to get the new update out to console versions of Nuclear Throne, but it wants to “make sure everything is rock solid on PC first.”

To give the new Steam beta a shot, you’ll need to right-click on Nuclear Throne in your Steam library, then select “Properties,” “Betas,” and “openbeta_win64” from the dropdown. Wait for the game to update, and then “enjoy your silky smooth gaming.”

11 little Death Stranding 2 improvements that made me say ‘hell yeah’

by admin June 24, 2025

When the original Death Stranding comes up in conversation, you can count on someone citing its tedious writing, pace-destroying exposition dumps, and reckless use of unexplained proper nouns as the biggest hurdle to enjoying it. Fair enough, but I submit that nothing sucked more in Death Stranding 1 than the menus.

Kojima’s first apocalyptic hiking sim had dozens of tiny annoyances that chipped away at my patience over two playthroughs totaling over 100 hours: Holding X to confirm every time Sam made the slightest cargo adjustment, navigating three layers of menus to recycle used-up grenades, plotting routes on an unhelpful map, the laborious process of emptying Sam’s backpack. I can feel my blood pressure rising just thinking about it.

Thankfully, I’m finding Death Stranding 2 to be a sequel in the best way possible—targeting my list of “this better be better” demands and satisfying almost every one of them. My first two hours have been full of little quality-of-life discoveries that have me saying “hell yeah” to myself in a hushed tone. If you played the first game a ton, maybe they’ll also excite you.

Cargo shortcuts!

Yes, I’m telling you the best new feature in Death Stranding 2 is six buttons in a radial menu. Holding up on the d-pad brings a bunch of handy cargo shortcuts that cut out a lot of menu time, the most important being “Auto-Arrange Cargo.” Balancing Sam’s cargo load now takes three seconds, but you can still enter the full Cargo Management screen at any time to move items around manually (no X confirmation needed).

Also handy are buttons that will only offload cargo/materials (not tools), one that offloads everything, and another button that’s so good it’s getting its own section below.

Handgun holster

Death Stranding has always had pistols, but now Sam has a dedicated place to carry them. Similar to the boot clip and grenade pouch, the handgun holster means Sam can always carry a weapon without adding to his backpack Tetris stack. You also have the holster from the start, an early signal that Death Stranding 2 has a bigger focus on stealth action.

Route Simulator

Drawing lines on maps just got slightly more pleasant. Sam’s route planner got an upgrade that automatically highlights hazards along drawn routes—stuff like deep rivers, bandit patrols, and BTs. The route tool has also been folded into the prep screen before accepting an order, and routes now include summaries that show its distance, elevation changes, total hazards, and overall risk level. It’s kinda like a real-life pilot flight plan.

Stats!

Stats got an expansion, too. Sam used to automatically improve his cargo capacity and stamina over time, but DS2 seems to go a lot deeper with stealth and combat upgrades. I haven’t messed with this much yet, but you still improve Sam automatically by doing things, not by dumping points into a tree.

Backward hats

Death Stranding 2 casts Norman Reedus in the role he was born to play: A backwards hat-wearing single dad. The hat menu was my first stop after getting control of Sam. That’s where I found the “wear backwards” option, gasped, and never looked back.

Offload backpack

No backpack, no problem. You can (finally!) take Sam’s backpack off when you’re about to walk him into dangerous places. The button’s in that same cargo shortcut radial, and it’s already come in clutch at a bandit camp. It’s pretty cool that Sam can still carry a handgun, rifle, and grenades without his backpack, so you basically shed 100 kg of “Cargo mode” and enter “Solid Snake” mode.

Quicker order turn-in

Turning in a bunch of orders at once used to require spamming X to skip through each completion screen. Since that was stupid, now all of Sam’s turned-in orders are summarized on one screen.

Optional exposition

The citizens of Death Stranding sure like to prattle on about stuff I didn’t ask about, but in Death Stranding 2, a lot of that extra exposition is optional. In the screenshot above, I had the option to skip this guy’s life story and detailed Timefall Shelter explanation and move on with my life.

Offload all unusable items

Another big time saver for Repair Spray power users. Now you can hold a button to drop all of your empty grenades, sprays, and guns at once (though you should still recycle them for the materials).

Recycle shortcut

Speaking of, recycling doesn’t suck anymore either. When you’re at a place where recycling is possible, it’s now listed as one of the options when moving an item in Cargo Management. I know that sounds dull, but if you know how much that rules, you know.

Goodbye emails, hello posts

Death Stranding 1’s emails were charming and occasionally helpful, but I ain’t reading all that. In DS2, characters have upgraded from email to live-tweeting unsolicited advice on social media. The Social Strand Service is both a feed of tips from friends and a photo log of players’ photo mode pictures. It’s still mostly fluff, but it’s not as busy or wordy as Sam’s old inbox.

FBC: Firebreak will keep you busy fending off a bunch of weird stuff right through to 2026 with multiple free updates
Game Updates

After a bit of a rough launch, Remedy promise that FBC: Firebreak improvements are on the way

by admin June 21, 2025

As it stands, Remedy Entertainment’s latest entry into their Connected Universe, FBC: Firebreak, is not doing so hot. Across the board it’s not been received entirely positively (including by our own James, you can read his review here), not exactly the ideal launch for a live service game. All the same, it being a live service game might ultimately be its benefit thanks to the power of that mystical force called “updates.” In a Steam post shared by the FBC: Firebreak team, some planned improvements were outlined, which certainly sound like they’d make for a better experience.

First of all, the team made one thing clear: the game “will improve.” Remedy explained that they’ve been listening to all of the feedback so far, and asked for any more that anyone might have. In terms of immediate plans for changes, the first thing they list is improving the first hour experience. They acknowledge that this is due to a “combination of things,” like poor onboarding, how the shooter’s systems actually work, clarity in what to do in jobs, and there being too much of a grind for higher-tier weapons.

In terms of onboarding, Remedy plan to better communicate the “synergies between Crisis Kits and giving players much better information on what to do in the Jobs and how to be more effective in doing the work that Firebreakers must do.” That means harmful conditions, like being on fire, being more readable.

A new patch that arrived yesterday has already made it easier to access jobs, as you no longer need to play the first two clearance levels of each job, and completing the full job unlocks the next full job. The patch has also made Lost Assets and Research Samples more highlighted visually, so that it’s harder to miss them. It’s also rebalanced how much all of the unlockables cost too, and things like Altered Augments, Improvised Devices, and powerful weapons are easier to access. All of this was done to help with dealing with that grind.

There’s a few more specifics in the Steam post you can read for yourself, and you can check out the full patch notes here.

With technical improvements, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are utterly transformed on Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 users create superlist of games that have seen significant technical improvements

by admin June 16, 2025

Nintendo Switch 2 users have compiled a massive list of original Switch games playable on the new console, as well as the technical improvements present if players boot them up on newer hardware.

This list, posted on the official Nintendo Switch reddit by user wtfimdoingwithmylife, is an extensive list of tested games by both the original poster and the community of people noting their own experiences in the comments.

As of writing, the list includes 147 games. Alongside these entries are whether or not these games have received Switch 2 patches, as well as FPS, resolution, and loading times both docked and undocked.

Check out our hands-on preview here!Watch on YouTube

The Nintendo Switch 2 is interesting under the hood. Its tech specs include a 8x ARM Cortex A78C CPU, it’s got DLSS support, and 12GB of LPDDR5X memory. A far leap beyond what the original Switch had to offer, and the source of these reports of improved performance.

Due to the beefier hardware present in the Switch 2, it’s worth noting even unpatched games have seen ample performance improvements thanks entirely due to the difference in power between the Switch and Switch 2. Take Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen! According to the list, this unpatched game is capped at 30FPS, but remains at cap with greater consistency. Loading times too are shorter when played on the Switch 2.

What this means is that many older games that struggled to run well on the Switch now have seen a new lease on life. An example of a game that, while great, ran poorly on the Switch 2 was Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity! A musou spin-off, it now sticks to a 30FPS cap even without a patch.

So now is a wonderful chance to break down your back-catalogue. Some additional suggestions include Pokemon Scarlet & Violet and Bayonetta 3, both great games benefit wonderfully from the Switch 2.

With technical improvements, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet are utterly transformed on Nintendo Switch 2

by admin June 4, 2025

I can scarcely think of a game as hampered by its performance as the original Nintendo Switch release of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. I can think of loads of games that perform worse, of course – broken, shattered releases – but I struggle to think of a great game so thoroughly compromised just from how it runs.

That was the log behind my 2022 review of the games, where I called the games a “super-effective new vision” for the series but bemoaned how it ran. The game became famous for stop-motion windmills and distant cliffsides that looked like they’d fallen out of a Nintendo 64 game. The truth is, Scarlet & Violet’s brilliant design and peppy attitude deserved better.

Now, three years on from release, Scarlet & Violet is about to get better with a Switch 2 update that I’m going to go ahead and call a total barnstomer. If Scarlet & Violet’s design was super-effective in 2022, on Switch 2 it’ll finally have the performance to match.

I was invited by The Pokemon Company to take an early look at the patched Switch 2 version of the game – which is always a sign of confidence, given I was quite a noisy detractor of the original game’s performance.

I’m honestly not sure what to say other than: wow, what a difference. It is absolute night and day stuff. To the sort of people who say that frame rate doesn’t really matter, I challenge them to play Scarlet & Violet on Switch 2 and then go back to the original. I dare you. As friend of the site Joe says in Serebii’s video preview embedded below, it ain’t doable.

Watch on YouTube

With a crisp presentation at a higher resolution and with a frame rate that as far as I can tell sits at a rock solid 60fps for the vast majority of the time, this is a world apart from the stomach-turning rollercoaster highs and lows of the original release. Distant Pokemon and world elements are no longer slideshows – yes, those infamous windmills are fixed!

This isn’t just about technical bragging rights. The difference in how this game now runs is profound enough that it changes the flow and feel of the game. Scarlet & Violet were by design the most footloose and expansive Pokemon games of all time, channeling the open world chops of everything from Skyrim to Breath of the Wild into a Pokemon setting and setup. The performance was a drag on that – if the frame rate tanks every time you whip the camera around to see a nearby approaching threat or take in a distant vista, you’re ripped right out of the game. By stabilising everything, the performance is utterly transformed.

Aside from the nebulous concept of ‘game feel’ being improved by the technical advancements, there are also real boons in terms of gameplay. Wild Pokemon spawn in and swarm across the rolling fields and the like in greater numbers. The subtle delay that you’d perceive, that hitch when encountering a wild Pokemon, is eliminated. Menus that were sluggish are now snappier and more responsive. Pokemon Box sprite icons now spring to life instantly.

These are small quality of life changes that add up to something greater. Perhaps most importantly battles are now less plodding in their pace, which was frequently obliterated by certain move animations could send the frame rate crashing.

It has to be said, it’s not all perfect. The level of detail settings remain pretty aggressive – which means as you’re galloping along at a glorious 60 frames atop your trusty Poke-steed, flowers and other micro detail pop in around you. It’s not ideal. Also, to be honest, the game now being technically accomplished does help to expose the art style for what it is – which is in need of a bit of tightening, I feel. The addition of HDR does really help the colorful exuberance of Paldea to shine, though.

In all it’s a triumph, anyway. This is the game Scarlet & Violet should’ve been. Moreover, it feels like the most technically accomplished main-line Pokemon game… possibly ever? Certainly of the 3D era. As with 120fps mouselook Metroid, playing 3D Pokemon at 60fps feels like you’re doing something illegal, frankly. But this is now the way to play these excellent games – and with good-performing Pokemon games now on the table, my excitement for this year’s Pokemon Legends Z-A has skyrocketed.

AMD just gave us our first glimpse of FSR 4’s ‘Redstone’ update, with a host of machine learning-based improvements

by admin May 21, 2025

AMD just gave us our first look at a significant update to FSR 4, codenamed “Redstone.” The new update is due to arrive in the second half of this year, and looks like something of a catch-up phase to counter Nvidia’s recent efforts with DLSS.

Top of the list is Neural Radiance Caching, which is presumably the equivalent of Nvidia’s Neural Rendering tech. FS4 Redstone will also feature machine learning-enhanced ray regeneration, with some more machine learning magic (it’s not actually magic, I know) added to its Frame Generation tech, too.

And a very shiny AMD-red car, of course. The news comes as a bit of a surprise as it didn’t turn up in our pre-briefing slides, but yours truly is sitting in Taipei right now at the press conference typing furiously on his laptop to catch you up.

More details to come, but enjoy some pretty pictures for now.
