Mexico President Sheinbaum calls for no ICE action at Gold Cup

by admin June 14, 2025

Jun 13, 2025, 05:22 PM ET

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday urged U.S. authorities not to conduct immigration enforcement targeting attendees of a Gold Cup soccer match in Inglewood, California, where Mexico’s team is due to play the Dominican Republic on Saturday.

Her comments followed recent raids by immigration authorities in the Los Angeles area targeting undocumented migrants under policies associated with President Donald Trump’s administration, which have sparked protests across major cities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in a now-deleted post to social media, had also promised to be “suited and booted” at the first round of Club World Cup soccer matches, the curtain-raiser event for next year’s World Cup.

“We don’t believe that at any soccer match there will be any [immigration] action. … We call for none to be taken by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” Sheinbaum said in her morning news conference.

Asked if she would still advise fans to attend Saturday’s match at SoFi Stadium, Sheinbaum noted that Mexican consulates in the U.S. have established protocols to assist citizens if detained.

“This campaign we are carrying out through the consulates will provide all the information on what to do if detained, as well as ongoing contact with families,” Sheinbaum said.

In response to its social media post, CBP said it regularly provides security at big sporting events.

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the FIFA Club World Cup 25 is safe for everyone involved, as we do with every major sporting event, including the Super Bowl. Our mission remains unchanged,” it told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Sheinbaum also addressed viral social media images of demonstrators in Los Angeles holding Mexican flags, dismissing them as “potential provocations.”

“Mexico will always promote peace,” she said, adding that its nationals in the U.S. are hardworking individuals who do not seek to incite violence.

Usually, the Mexican national team matches attract large crowds whenever it plays in Southern California. Its last match there was in March, when more than 50,000 fans attended a Nations League semifinal against Canada.

For safety concerns, the Mexican national team decided to change hotels earlier in the week and moved from downtown to Long Beach.

Mexico will play its next two Concacaf Gold Cup group stage matches in Arlington, Texas, and Las Vegas. The tournament also features Central American countries with sizable migrant populations in the United States.

Information from Reuters and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Social Media Is Now a DIY Alert System for ICE Raids

by admin June 12, 2025

Alerts about operations are disseminated through direct messages, WhatsApp, or posts on each page’s feed. In turn, it is possible to anonymously report the presence of immigration agents through private text messages or calls to specific phone numbers.

In general, users are asked for basic data such as time, date, city, state, and exact location of the operation, as well as photographs or videos when it is possible to document them. In addition to issuing real-time alerts, many of these pages offer free legal guidance, not only on migration issues, but also on labor rights, access to health, education, and other key services.

Some of the networks active in this work include:

Union del Barrio California

This grassroots pro-immigrant organization maintains an active presence on Facebook. It conducts community patrols to detect ICE movement, shares urgent alerts, and organizes workshops on legal rights.

Chirla

With constant activity on Facebook and other platforms, Chirla publishes notifications about raids, provides legal advice, and calls for citizen mobilizations in the face of new raids.

Stop ICE Raids Alert Network

This network distributes emergency alerts and offers assistance to people affected by ICE raids. In addition to its social network accounts, it has a web page that allows people to receive geolocalized notifications in real time.

Siembra NC

This organization operates primarily in North Carolina. Through its Facebook page, it promotes a whistleblower hotline (336-543-0353). Although its focus is on Alamance, Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Orange, Wake, Randolph, and Rockingham counties, it has a statewide presence across North Carolina.

RadarSafe

This project uses the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), a system for sending out digital emergency alerts, to provide secure information on immigration stops and operations. It also publishes community-submitted reports and verifies information with support from local residents.

Inmigración y Visas

Focused on immigration issues, this portal offers a WhatsApp channel where users can report raids, exchange experiences, and receive advice. It also shares informative content on its Facebook page and website.

SignalSafe

Adding to this assistance network is SignalSafe, an application created by a team of anonymous developers that provides real-time alerts on ICE activity. Through collaborative reporting, the app maps sightings of federal agents and unidentified vehicles, allowing migrants to avoid potential checkpoints.

Since Trump’s return to the presidency, SignalSafe has gained widespread popularity. The tool allows the integration of various filters based on the user’s location, type of activity by immigration authorities, and time range.

This platform is fed by citizen reports, which are verified by a group of specialized moderators. The system is bilingual, with support for Spanish and English, and has advanced security protocols to help protect user privacy.

Key Access

Given the growing number of raids in the United States and the lack of certainty about the safety of those detained in these operations, examples such as the above show that some sectors of the citizenry seem to have taken an active role in digital spaces against the implementation of immigration policies.

In this context, the widespread use of social networks among the migrant community has turned these platforms into key tools within the resistance movement. According to data from the International Organization for Migration, by 2023, 64 percent of migrants in transit through Central America, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic—mostly bound for the United States—had access to a smartphone and internet connection during their journey. Of these, 47 percent of men and 35 percent of women used these devices to access social networks.

Ice Spice cast for major role in The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants

by admin June 10, 2025

Spongebob: Search for Squarepants is the latest Spongebob movie, and Ice Spice is set to not only play a character in the film, but also to have a full song made for the movie.

Since the original movie came out in 2004, Spongebob has been gracing cinemas as one of the most popular kids’ animated shows ever. It’s Nickelodeon’s flagship for a reason.

Just the same, there have been a number of celebrity cameos, whether they be voicing characters in the film or be starring directly themselves in the case of David Hasselhoff’s iconic role in the very first Spongebob movie.

However, The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants has a celebrity guest starring in it that’s rather unexpected: Ice Spice.

With a total count of Spotify listens that number in the billions, Ice Spice is one of the most popular hip-hop artists in the world.

And, despite much of her identity as a musician being related to topics that aren’t the most appropriate for children, she’s been chosen to play a major role in Spongebob: Search for Squarepants.

One of Ice Spice’s most popular songs is titled Bikini Bottom, and, though the lyrics would need to be reworked in order to fit into a movie for kids, she’s already proven she can turn a Spongebob-esque beat into a song that’s great on its own.

As for her actual role in the film, it’s up in the air. Maybe she’ll play an animated character? Maybe she’ll be herself? Perhaps she’ll have a whole musical number? Who knows?

Outside of this, the majority of the listed cast so far is side characters and original cast members reprising their roles, including Mark Hamill returning as the Flying Dutchman. Regina Hall and George Lopez have also been confirmed for the film, though their roles are yet unclear.

This may not even be the most bizarre role she’s ever had considering she’s got a skin in Fortnite.

Self-Driving Waymo Cars Torched During ICE Protest in Los Angeles

by admin June 10, 2025

In brief

  • Waymo self-driving cars were vandalized and set ablaze during a protest against ICE raids in downtown Los Angeles.
  • Waymo temporarily pulled its fleet from the area and is cooperating with authorities.

Several Waymo autonomous taxis were vandalized and set on fire Sunday during a protest against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles and the Trump administration’s deployment of National Guard into the region.

What the vehicles were doing there—who sent them, and why—is thus far unknown. Viral videos posted to social media show demonstrators climbing atop the self-driving taxis, smashing windows, and spray-painting the sides of the taxis. At least five vehicles were severely damaged and set on fire as the protest escalated on Sunday evening, according to a report by KTLA.

As the electric vehicles burned, officials warned that the chemicals in the cars’ batteries could release toxic fumes.

⚠️ Traffic Advisory⚠️ To our media partners, demonstrators and others who may enter the area of Los Angeles St, North of Arcadia and South of Alameda:

Burning lithium-ion batteries release toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride, posing risks to responders and those nearby.…

— LAPD Central Division (@LAPDCentral) June 9, 2025

While Waymo appeared to scale back its operations in the Los Angeles area on the Waymo app, the company said it is being cautious with further deployments.

“Waymo is still operating in Los Angeles,” a spokesperson told Decrypt. “However, out of an abundance of caution, given the recent activity, we removed vehicles from Downtown Los Angeles and will not be serving that specific area of LA at the moment.” The spokesperson noted that Waymo did not appear to be the target of the attacks.

Waymo said it was working with local authorities in the aftermath of the incident. The Los Angeles Police Department did not respond to Decrypt’s request for comment.

The Trump Administration Is Turning ICE Raids and Protests Into Reality TV

by admin June 9, 2025

Since the very beginning of the year, President Donald Trump’s administration has worked to build a self-sustaining digital media ecosystem in support of its controversial immigration policies. That system is now working overtime as protests bubble up in Los Angeles and get planned across the country, spawning an onslaught of AI-generated slop and reality television-style content.

Protests broke out on Friday shortly after ICE officers conducted a series of raids targeting Latino communities in Los Angeles. Reality star Phil “Dr. Phil” McGraw and the camera crew for his new Merit TV network embedded with immigration officials during Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Friday’s raids, CNN reported. Merit TV announced in a press release that its footage will be aired throughout a “2-Night Television Event” on Monday and Tuesday. The broadcast includes an exclusive one-on-one interview with Trump’s border czar Tom Homan. (There is already an interview with Homan currently streaming on Merit TV’s site.)

“Dr. Phil and Tom Homan break down the multi-agency raid targeting cartel-linked businesses in LA’s garment district,” states the Merit TV email about Monday night’s program. “With $80 million in undeclared imports uncovered, $17 million in unpaid tariffs identified, and 41 undocumented immigrants detained, the high-impact operation drew fierce public protests. Homan addresses the growing backlash and explains the zero-tolerance policy for interference with federal enforcement.”

It’s unclear where the highly specific numbers mentioned in the press email come from, or what the source of information is for the claim that affected businesses are tied to cartels. Homan and other heads of law enforcement agencies have repeatedly threatened protesters and even California politicians with arrest. Trump also said he would arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom.

MAGA’s independent influencers also spent the weekend parroting the Trump administration’s talking points. On Sunday, Rogan O’Handley, who goes by DC Draino online, posted what appears to be an AI-generated video on Instagram of Trump pummeling a man holding a Mexican flag on a dirt bike. As the man falls over, a triumphant Trump raises the flag which magically transforms into an American one.

“MAGA won the popular vote and this is what we want,” the caption of the post reads. It currently has more than 50,000 likes.

Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA and host of an eponymous podcast, posted to X in an apparent attempt to rally the right’s outrage over LA into support for the Trump administration’s budget plans. “Infuriated about what you are seeing in LA? Pass the BBB [Big Beautiful Bill]. Watch this and support the bill. We must reclaim America,” Kirk posted on Monday.

This didn’t come out of nowhere. The Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration has been broadcasted across television and the internet for months, as influencers and content creators have been invited to participate in broadcasts and ride-a-longs with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials.

“That’s been a pretty routine thing. Libs of TikTok was embedded, Tomi Lahren.” CJ Pearson, a conservative influencer tells WIRED of the ridealongs. “I’ve been asked as well, so, I think there definitely will be more to come.”

ICE Quietly Scales Back Rules for Courthouse Raids

by admin June 5, 2025

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has quietly rescinded guidance that advised ICE agents conducting courthouse raids to take steps to avoid violating state and local laws while carrying out civil immigration arrests. The subtle policy change could lead to an escalation in enforcement tactics and legal disputes.

Revised policy guidance recently posted to ICE’s website and reviewed by WIRED reveals efforts by the agency to enhance the discretion and autonomy of the federal agents making arrests in and around courthouses—one of the more aggressive initiatives employed by the Trump administration as part of its all-out push to round up migrants across the United States and its territories. The policy revision has not been previously reported.

In recent weeks, ICE agents have made high-profile arrests of immigrants attending routine court hearings, as part of the administration’s effort to conduct what Trump calls the largest deportation campaign in American history.

The change in guidance comes amid sweeping ICE raids across the US, some sparking protests and heated confrontations with citizens, threatening an erosion of local autonomy and democratic governance over law enforcement operations within communities, while further blurring the line between civil and criminal enforcement.

Interim guidance, issued in January by ICE’s former acting director, Caleb Vitello, ordered agents to ensure that courthouse arrests were “not precluded by laws imposed by the jurisdiction in which enforcement actions will take place.” Todd Lyons, the current acting director, issued a superseding memo dated May 27 that removes the language about respecting local laws and statutes that limit ICE agents from performing “enforcement actions” in or near courthouses.

“The old policy required ICE to consult with a legal adviser to determine whether making an arrest at or near a courthouse might violate a nonfederal law. The new policy eliminates that requirement,” says Anthony Enriquez, vice president at RFK Human Rights, a human rights advocacy nonprofit. “Now, these frequently complex legal questions fall to the judgment of a line officer untrained in local laws.”

“It is certainly yet another effort to unleash and expand ICE’s enforcement operations without regard to state law,” says Emma Winger, deputy legal director at the American Immigration Council.

Federal policy guidance is not legally binding, but it carries the power of law in practice, mandating procedures that ICE agents must follow in carrying out enforcement operations.

In response to a request for comment, ICE spokesperson Mike Alvarez referred WIRED to the May 27 memorandum. ICE declined to clarify whether it would continue to consider local courthouse policies and security protocols during enforcement actions.

Vitello, responsible for issuing the original guidance, was appointed ICE acting director by President Donald Trump soon after inauguration. Vitello was removed in late February and reportedly transferred to oversee the agency’s deportation operations. Lyons assumed the acting directorship in March.

The Biden administration previously limited ICE enforcement actions in and around courthouses in 2021, saying the arrests—which reportedly spiked during Trump’s first term—“had a chilling effect on individuals’ willingness to come to court or work cooperatively with law enforcement.”
