‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Producer Accused of ChatGPT Use for Songwriting

by admin September 17, 2025

Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters has stayed in the conversation in large part because of its blockbuster soundtrack, but now one of those songs has come under scrutiny for potentially getting an assist from ChatGPT.

In a recent discussion in Seoul for OpenAI’s newly opened Korean office, songwriter Vince reportedly claimed he used the controversial technology to help pen the song “Soda Pop,” performed in the movie by the demonic Saja Boys. He is credited as one of several co-writers on the track, according to a Netflix blog post.

A now-deleted tweet (preserved in a screengrab on Reddit) said to be penned by an OpenAI exec read: “Fav moment from the launch celebration was hearing singer/songwriter Vince share that ChatGPT helped him write ‘Soda Pop’ from KPop Demon Hunters! It apparently gave him ideas to make it sound ‘more bubbly.’”

Here’s where things get complicated. The alleged use of AI to help write “Soda Pop” was first reported in the English-language version of Joongang Daily—but the original Korean text of the article makes no mention of ChatGPT being used specifically during the production of KPop Demon Hunters’ music.

A translator on Gizmodo’s staff revealed Vince instead made a far broader statement—”I sometimes use ChatGPT to get some inspiration while producing K-Pop”—while discussing how AI technology is already being used in the K-Pop industry.

As Kotaku has pointed out, KPop Demon Hunters has previously had to fend off allegations surrounding its characters being made with AI. Rei Ami, one of the singers for the movie’s girl group Huntr/x, has also had to insist that she and co-singers Ejae and Audrey Nuna are real human beings.

io9 has reached out to Netflix for clarification and will update should we hear back.

KPop Demon Hunters Writer Says He Used AI To Write ‘Soda Pop’

by admin September 17, 2025

OpenAI officially has a Korean office. Normally, that wouldn’t be news we would cover here at Kotaku, but KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix’s animated musical phenomenon, was apparently brought up during the generative AI organization’s launch event for its new Korean subsidiary on Monday, September 15. Vince, a prolific K-pop producer who wrote songs performed by the film’s demonic boy band group called the Saja Boys, made an appearance at the Seoul event. That’s annoying in and of itself, but he also apparently dropped the bomb that he used AI to help write the group’s infectious song “Soda Pop.”

OpenAI technical staff member Sherwin Wu said in a since-deleted tweet that Vince said he used ChatGPT to write “Soda Pop,” and that the generative chatbot “gave him ideas to make it sound ‘more bubbly.’” This occurred during an on-stage discussion with Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s Chief Business Officer. Korea Joongang Daily reports that Vince said this was an example of how AI is “already used in K-pop production,” but this is notably not a direct quote, as the original article was written in Korean and “translated by a bilingual reporter with the help of generative AI tools.” The publication’s original Korean article includes mentions of Vince using ChatGPT, but doesn’t call out KPop Demon Hunters or “Soda Pop” by name. We’ve reached out to the outlet for clarification.

At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be footage of Vince’s talk on the internet, but we’ve reached out to Netflix and OpenAI for comment on the situation. Based on these accounts, it sounds like Vince used ChatGPT to help ideate the song that would eventually become “Soda Pop,” but AI was not used to generate the song that appears in the film. Rei Ami, one of the vocalists behind the voices of the fictional girl group Huntr/x, has been very vocal about the real people behind every performance in the film ever since accusations of AI use have sprouted up in the wake of the film’s colossal popularity.

Even if the final song is all produced and sung by real people, fans are feeling burned knowing AI may have played any part in the creation of the film, given its worldwide success and how it’s become a poster child for people advocating for new ideas in the animation industry in the face of never-ending sequel slop. We’ll update this story if we hear back from Netflix or if Vince makes an official statement.

Netflix sensation KPop Demon Hunters headed to Fortnite in new crossover, leaks suggest – we must be getting Huntr/x skins, right?

by admin September 17, 2025

KPop Demon Hunters is headed to Fortnite, according to the latest leaks.

If you’re somehow unaware, KPop Demon Hunters is an animated film from Sony Pictures depicting a fantastical take on the South Korean pop industry. Not only have the songs (sung by prominent KPop artists) dominated music charts, the film itself is the most watched original title in Netflix history.

It’s no wonder, then, a crossover with Fortnite is on the way, as spotted by Fortnite leakers SpushFNBR and Loolo. It’s gonna be golden for sure.

“Golden” Official Lyric Video | KPop Demon Hunters | Sony AnimationWatch on YouTube

But what might the crossover include? The most obvious would be dance emotes based on songs from the film, which each have their own dance routines. I can’t wait to see Metal Gear Solid’s Solid Snake dancing along to Soda Pop.

Skins based on the three Huntr/x singers would also work, considering they’re also fighters alongside being in a pop band.

Just as KPop is taking over the music charts, games from South Korea are proving extremely popular too – as proven recently by the huge success of Stellar Blade on PC.

Yield Hunters Flock to HyperLiquid Staking Ecosytem to Farm Kintetiq’s Airdrop

by admin September 12, 2025

Kinetiq, a liquid staking protocol built around Hyperliquid’s HYPE token, has seen an explosion of inflows in recent weeks as users pile in to farm the protocol’s airdrop points campaign.

Total value locked (TVL) on Kinetiq has jumped from roughly $458 million in mid-July to over $2.1 billion today, according to DefiLlama.

While part of the increase can be attributed to a 20% rise in the price of HYPE over the same period, another big driver has been raw deposits. The amount of HYPE staked has climbed from under 10 million tokens in July to nearly 40 million now. Kinetiq’s points program opened mid-July, underscoring that it is driving activity in its ecosystem.

Kinetiq Deposits (DeFiLlama)

The surge demonstrates the growing influence of Hyperliquid, which is fast becoming a DeFi heavyweight as liquidity, trading activity and staking demand migrate onto its ecosystem.

Points programs in particular, where protocols distribute future token allocations to early participants, continue to pull in yield-hungry crypto investors. By staking HYPE through Kinetiq, users not only earn standard staking rewards but also accumulate points toward a potential Kinetiq token airdrop.

For many DeFi traders, that double yield opportunity has proven irresistible, some have shared on X.

KPop Demon Hunters Actor Pays Tribute To Her Character At VMAs

by admin September 9, 2025

Last night, some of the biggest names in music gathered in Elmont, New York, for the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Lady Gaga all took home some of the biggest awards, but one of the presenting groups at the event stole the show: the voices of Huntr/x, the fictional demon-slaying K-pop group from KPop Demon Hunters. Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, the singing voices for Rumi, Mira, and Zoey in the Netflix animated musical, all came together to present the award for Best Album. Sadly, the group didn’t perform any of the bangers from the movie, but Nuna did take the opportunity to pay tribute to her character at the show with her outfit.

In the opening of KPop Demon Hunters, we see Huntr/x fans being interviewed on camera about the group. A few Mira fans talk about how she’s not only the group’s leading dancer and the black sheep of her family, but is also a fashion icon on and off the stage, with one fan raving about how she wore a black sleeping bag to the Met Gala and it was an iconic moment. Nuna didn’t wear a one-to-one recreation of Mira’s sleeping bag outfit to the VMAs, but she did wear a big puffy jacket that was a clear homage to the character over the rest of her outfit. Maybe if she attends the Met Gala next year she can fully commit, but for now, we’ll take the nod.

Who else could wear a sleeping bag to the #VMAs???

Huntr/x was nominated for one award at the show, with “Golden” being in the running for “Song of the Summer,” but losing out to Tate McRae’s “Just Keep Watching.” Even without the award, the song has been incredibly successful outside of the movie, having topped the charts in over 20 countries worldwide. Hopefully, at some point this year we get to hear some of the songs from the movie performed live during awards season. For now, we have videos of the girls singing them at karaoke bars.

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Songwriter on Crafting the Movie’s Breakout Hit

by admin September 3, 2025

The biggest earworm from KPop Demon Hunters, “Golden,” has helped propel the hit Netflix and Sony animated feature to success atop both the streaming and music charts. And now we know a bit more about the lore behind the Huntr/x track.

Songwriter and singing voice of Rumi, one of the film’s lead demon hunters, EJAE talked about the film’s breakout song with Variety.

“One of the biggest assets I brought to the movie, or when writing the songs, was being bilingual,” she shared about bringing cultural authenticity to the film’s music to help reflect the filmmaker’s vision. “It was important for our co-director, Maggie Kang, to have Korean in the lyrics, and I just love that it’s not just the verses; it was in the actual song too.”

EJAE elaborated that the mandate from the filmmakers to the music team came down to having the word “gold” in the leading Huntr/x track. “It needed to have the word gold in it and the feeling of what Rumi was going through.”

It also needed to introduce the struggles of Rumi’s bandmates that they faced as a team: “It needed a pep talk and the idea that we can do this together.”

As the band’s lead figure, Rumi was someone EJAE related to when she was coming up as a K-Pop trainee. “She’s incredibly hardworking and has that leadership. She puts her best foot forward, but she tries to hide her imperfections and flaws.”

Her had work followed her to the most random of places for inspiration: “I actually wrote the melody on my way to the dentist.”

KPop Demon Hunters is now streaming on Netflix.

KPop Demon Hunters, Two Months Later

by admin September 2, 2025

It feels like just yesterday that KPop Demon Hunters was only on my radar because the internet was memeing the hell out of one of the musical’s early scenes in which Huntr/x, the fictional girl group that would give Dante from Devil May Cry a run for his money on the demon-slaying front, devours their pre-show snacks in a way that can only be described as bestial. If I had listened to the dismissive jokes, I might have thought the movie was just some goofy animated slop in Netflix’s never-ending content mill and passed on loading it up to see what all the fuss was about. However, even if I hadn’t taken the plunge, KPop Demon Hunters would have become a phenomenon too big to ignore. In the two months since the movie launched on Netflix’s streaming service, the movie Sony was too cautious to release in theaters on its own has become arguably one of the most important moments in pop culture this year. How did we get here? What can we learn from the movie’s resounding success? Given how well the first movie has performed for Netflix, is there any need for the inevitable sequel to do anything differently?

KPop Demon Hunters’ success can be attributed to a few factors, but all of it leads back to it having every advantage in a world where it’s increasingly imperative that a project achieve viral recognition and good word of mouth. Launching on Netflix was undeniably a boon for the film, as kids love to watch movies on repeat, and if an audience readily has easier access to something at home, it feeds The Content Machine. YouTubers can create entire reaction videos from the comfort of their own homes, clips that aren’t just grainy camera recordings in a dark theater can circulate on social media, and its soundtrack of catchy K-pop earworms can be available on streaming the day the movie comes out. Even if its title and premise didn’t grab your attention, KPop Demon Hunters was uniquely positioned to find its audience, and that audience is historically very loud.

© Netflix

The K-pop audience is merely one slice of the pie, however. KPop Demon Hunters’ stunning Spider-Verse-esque animation, anime-inspired action, and Disney-like musicality means that even if the core premise doesn’t appeal to you, the movie probably has something that will catch your eye. As specific as its audience appears on the surface, the film isn’t just gunning for the biggest Twice stan with a Netflix subscription. Casual K-Pop listeners like myself found a lot to love in the film’s story of self-acceptance punctuated by some absolute bangers. The end result is something that transcends K-pop fandom and has rooted itself in the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.

KPop Demon Hunters is a chart-topping success story on multiple fronts. It’s now Netflix’s most-watched film of all time; topped the box office with limited singalong screenings that the AMC theater chain didn’t even participate in its self-love anthem, “Golden,” has been at the top of the Billboard top 200 for weeks; and the movie’s soundtrack is the first to have four songs in Billboard’s top 10 at once. All of this success with a movie for which Sony made the “safe” choice to have Netflix foot the production bill in exchange for exclusive streaming rights and a split revenue in soundtrack sales. While some, myself included, have called Sony’s decision foolish, given the movie has done nothing but thrive since it arrived on Netflix, there is part of me that wonders if Huntr/x would have become a household name were KPop Demon Hunters not so easily accessible. So much of its spread has been because it is easily clippable, screenshotable, and shareable across social media like TikTok and YouTube. Sony’s hesitation to put the movie in theaters may have been what led to it becoming the viral hit it has.

© Netflix

But what is the source of that hesitation? Is it because someone up top thought K-pop was too niche, or the mix of genres was too off-putting? Or is it just that KPop Demon Hunters was a new property led by women? The film is the latest example of women-led cinema doing huge numbers, and then the rest of the world acting surprised that something ostensibly targeting young girls has an audience. The Barbie movie made over a billion dollars, the Frozen movies are some of the most successful animated films of all time, and we still need astronomical success stories to convince us that there’s demand for women-led films. KPop Demon Hunters is breaking through multiple ceilings both for its own success and to pave the way for others, but only time will tell if anyone actually learns anything from this, or if the film industry’s goldfish brain kicks in again and we forget until the sequel rolls out in a few years.

KPop Demon Hunters Artist Weighs In On Why It’s So Successful

by admin August 30, 2025

KPop Demon Hunters is officially the most-streamed English movie in Netflix’s catalog. It is one of the most surprising success stories of the year. A completely original animated musical has captured the hearts and minds of audiences, all while Sony and Netflix were woefully unprepared for it to blow up the way it has. It debunks conjecture that people aren’t interested in original animated features, and now that it has, we can examine why projects by Pixar, once the  top dog in animation, haven’t hit the same way they used to.

Elio, Pixar’s sci-fi pseudo-isekai film about an orphaned boy looking for family among aliens, had the company’s worst-ever box office debut back in June, and as Pixar’s original movies continue to flounder and fail to gain an audience while a sequel like Inside Out 2 can be one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, the narrative increasingly becomes “people don’t want original stories or ones too specific to a certain lived experience.” Well, KPop Demon Hunters is a brand new story based in Korean mythology and is topping the charts for both movies and music, so that’s obviously not true. What’s the difference? Well, one KPop Demon Hunters artist has a theory.

Radford Sechrist is a story artist on KPop Demon Hunters, as well as the husband of director Maggie Kang. Sometimes he posts about art and animation on TikTok, and he had some insight as to why KPop Demon Hunters has been so successful while movies like Elio and even The Bad Guys 2, which had a pretty significant drop in box office after its opening weekend, are struggling. Sechrist says that even though a lot of animated movies are marketed as “all-ages,” only so many of them are truly aiming for adults as well as kids. He then goes on to argue that, in order for an animated film to become a big pop culture phenomenon, it has to target people in their 20s and up, and it will then naturally trickle down to children through platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

“I think the issue is that kids only watch shows where they’re seeing people talking about it on YouTube, and the people talking about it on YouTube are in their 20s,” Sechrist says. “So if you’re developing a movie, you kind of have to think about people in their 20s first before the kids will even hear of the movie. So things like anime, Stranger Things, you have to sort of shoot for that age of demographic and you have to get people in their 20s excited so they’re talking about it. Then the kids will see that, and as long as you don’t put anything in the movie that’s too much for a kid—but let’s be honest, there’s like 5-year-olds watching Stranger Things.”

Sechrist points out that some of the most notable exceptions to this are in animation targeting pre-school children, or in shows like Bluey, which are aimed at children but engage in enough adult themes that parents gladly watch the show alongside their kids. Anecdotally, when I went to see KPop Demon Hunters for its singalong screenings, the kid to adult ratio in the crowds wasn’t exactly lopsided. I went with a group of adults, and we weren’t the only childless party at those screenings. My friend even joked that she forgot the movie was “for kids” until we arrived at the theater because its fandom has transcended age. That speaks to the truth of Sechrist’s theory that KPop Demon Hunters’ adult appeal, which it establishes through adult themes, quality animation, and music you’d actually listen to outside of the movie, has helped it break past the “kids movie” bubble that movies like Elio may be stuck in. He says that he would encourage Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, and anyone else working on an animated property to consider if something is reaching the 20s-and-up demographic, or if they want it to be so specific in its younger audience that it never escapes those trappings.

Pixar’s box office trajectory has become a big topic in conversations about the state of animation writ large, but some nuance is lost when you ignore that several of Pixar’s movies have been released on Disney+ alongside a limited theatrical release in the years since the covid-19 pandemic. In any case, Pixar’s upcoming projects are pretty sequel heavy, with Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and Coco 2 all in the works. The studio’s next movie, an Avatar-like story called Hoppers, is coming to theaters on March 6.

Sony’s XM4 Headphones Restocked at Nearly 50% Off, Perfect for Listening to K-Pop Demon Hunters Soundtrack

by admin August 29, 2025

What is good noise? “Golden” by Hunter/X from K-Pop Demon Hunters is good noise. New episodes of Jamie Loftus’ Sixteenth Minute (of Fame) podcast is good noise. The guns firing in the bank heist scene of Michael Mann’s Heat is good noise. What about bad noise? The couple on the bus with you arguing is bad noise. The turbine engines on flight is bad noise. Your cubicle’s neighbor punching away at their mechanical keyboard is bad noise. Wouldn’t it be swell if we could just cancel out the bad noise so we can focus in on the good noise? Well, you can do just that with the Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless noise cancelling headphones. For a limited time, Amazon has them for a whopping 43% off this labor day weekend. Normally priced at $348, you can currently pick them up for a solid $150 off. That means you only have to pay $198.

See at Amazon

The Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones utilize digital noise cancellation to ensure you can hear each and every note or word clearly with no disruptive sounds from your environment coming through. Two microphones in each earcup work together to capture and eliminate surrounding noise when listening to your music, podcasts, or audiobooks, removing it in real time with the help of the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1.

The noise-cancelling tech also works to amplify your voice during calls. Five microphones work to deliver clear voice quality. They isolate your voice from any background noise so the person on the other end hears you and just you.

The headphones are designed for all day listening. You can expect a full 30 hours of battery life on a single charge. That’ll last you the whole workday, your commute, and beyond. If you ever find yourself having forgotten to charge it, no need to worry. Just plugging it in for 10 minutes will let you listen for a solid five hours.

Multipoint Connection

One standout convenience with the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones is that they can be paired with two Bluetooth devices at once. This is great as it allows you to be connected to your phone and a gaming console at the same time. It’s perfect for wanting to listen to your own music or podcasts through Spotify or something while playing a game on your Nintendo Switch. You can take a call without disconnecting and reconnecting anything.

Through Labor Day weekend, you can grab yourself a pair of the Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless noise-cancelling headphones for $150 off. The price is down to just $198 for a limited time.
