Ethereum, Columbia University Launch Blockchain Research Hub

The Ethereum Foundation and Columbia University have teamed up to establish a new hub in New York. The Columbia-Ethereum Research Center on Blockchain Protocol Design will advance blockchain infrastructure and expand opportunities for interdisciplinary research.

Hosted at Columbia Engineering and led by Tim Roughgarden, a leading blockchain protocol expert, the center aims to shape blockchain’s “infrastructure layer,” often called a global “computer in the sky.”

Ethereum Foundation confirmed the update on X saying that it will increase the $500,000 in annual donations.

In a follow-up post, the Foundation further said that the funding will support the center’s research and educational initiatives. It will help advance blockchain protocol development and applications.

As per Columbia Engineering’s announcement, the Ethereum Foundation will provide up to $6 million in funding, while philanthropic donations could add $1.5 million more.

The center will also support fellowships, research grants, and industry residencies. Consequently, Columbia will connect its faculty and students with leading researchers from academia and industry.

Hsiao-Wei Wang, co-executive director of the Ethereum Foundation, said, “Ethereum has always been about exploring what decentralized systems can enable, and research and education are essential to strengthening that foundation.”

Columbia Engineering Dean Shih-Fu Chang added, “By bringing together experts from different disciplines and industries, we can lead the development of the groundwork for breakthroughs.”

Programs Driving Knowledge and Innovation

Additionally, the center will run graduate fellowships, competitive calls for research proposals, and an annual summer bootcamp for junior researchers. It will expand Columbia’s Digital Finance Seminar Series and co-host the Columbia Cryptoeconomics Workshop, a high-profile gathering of scholars and practitioners.

Roughgarden emphasized the center’s impact, saying, “The initiative will secure Columbia’s status as a global leader in the field of blockchain protocols and their applications.”

The partnership shows, apart from funding, that it shapes blockchain by blending deep research with reliable impact.

As Windows 10 Team edition reaches EOL, Microsoft Teams Rooms will no longer work on Surface Hub v1, raising challenges for enterprises

Thousands of companies could face meeting room disruption soon as the upcoming Windows 10 end of life deadline looks set to affect Microsoft Team Rooms devices.

From October 14, Surface Hub v1 devices, like other Windows 10 systems, will no longer receive updates or support from Microsoft, as the company pulls support for Windows 10 Team edition.

Unlike standard Windows 10 editions, Windows 10 Team doesn’t have an extended support option, and although Surface Hub 2S units can be upgraded to Windows 11 or fitted with a Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge, the original Hub doesn’t have that luxury.

Buy a new Surface Hub or else

“Surface Hub v1 devices will no longer be supported. It’s recommended to upgrade to a newer Surface Hub device,” Microsoft said in an update.

This advice places many meeting spaces in an awkward position, and will see some devices turning into expensive but unsupported equipment, as the impact stretches beyond Surface hardware.

The Microsoft Teams Rooms app will no longer function on Windows 10 devices after October 14, nor will the Teams Rooms Pro Management Portal.

As Microsoft puts it: “The Microsoft Teams Rooms app based on classic Teams will no longer be accessible.”

Andrew Francis, applications engineering senior manager at Shure, told The Register that many companies may underestimate the problem.

“While the initial focus is often on personal devices like laptops and desktops, there are many other endpoints that need consideration. One key example is the Microsoft Teams Rooms on a Windows 10 device,” he said.

Francis noted there are about one million active Teams Rooms worldwide, on both Windows and Android, but many Windows-based units cannot move to Windows 11 because of hardware restrictions.

Samsung’s very expensive Family Hub fridges will now treat you to ads on their displays

If you’ve just shelled out thousands of dollars on one of Samsung’s smart fridges, you’d be forgiven for expecting it to leave you alone, rather than encouraging you to spend even more money. But that is no longer the case — following a recent update, you’ll start seeing ads on the fridge’s display.

According to Android Authority, the new software update is being rolled out to Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators in the US, and will now display ads and promotions while the display is idle. In a statement to the outlet, Samsung confirmed that it’s conducting a pilot program as part of its commitment to (brace yourselves for this one) “enhancing every day value for our home appliance customers.”

The Cover Screen on which ads show up appears when a refrigerator is not displaying something else, such as Samsung’s Art Mode or a photo album. Samsung told Android Authority that advertising won’t appear when one of these modes is active, adding that specific ads can also be dismissed and won’t appear again while the campaign is running.

What the statement doesn’t make clear is whether advertising can be turned off altogether, which again, seems like a reasonable option given that you can expect to pay anything between $1,800 and $3,500 for a Family Hub-equipped fridge. But it doesn’t appear to be possible while the pilot period is live. It also isn’t clear if any specific models are omitted from the testing.

Back in April, Samsung’s head of R&D for digital appliances, Jeong Seung Moon, told The Verge that at that time the company had no plans to bring ads to its smart home displays, but in the case of its refrigerators it appears to have changed its mind pretty quickly.

After revealing his company’s latest augmented reality and smart glasses at Meta Connect this year, Mark Zuckerberg has introduced a new entertainment hub for its Quest headsets called Horizon TV. Zuckerberg said Meta believes watching video content is going to be a huge category for both virtual reality headsets and glasses in the future. Meta has already teamed up with several major streaming services to provide shows and movies you can enjoy in VR. One of those partners is Disney+, which will give users access to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on their headsets, as well as to content from ESPN and Hulu.

Based on the interface Zuckerberg showed on the event, which had a lineup of streaming apps that will be available on the hub, Meta also teamed up with Prime Video, Spotify, Peacock and Twitch. That will allow you to watch shows, such as The Boys and Fallout on your virtual reality devices. Meta also partnered with Universal Pictures and iconic horror company Blumhouse, so that you can watch horror flicks like M3GAN and The Black Phone on your Quest “with immersive special effects you won’t find anywhere else.”

The Horizon TV hub supports Dolby Atmos for immersive sounds, with Dolby Vision arriving later this year for richer colors and crisper details. For a limited time, you’ll be able to watch an exclusive 3D clip of Avatar: Fire and Ash on Horizon TV, as well, as part of Meta’s partnership with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision.

A DHS Data Hub Exposed Sensitive Intel to Thousands of Unauthorized Users

The Department of Homeland Security’s mandate to carry out domestic surveillance has been a concern for privacy advocates since the organization was first created in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Now a data leak affecting the DHS’s intelligence arm has shed light not just on how the department gathers and stores that sensitive information—including about its surveillance of Americans—but on how it once left that data exposed to thousands of government, private sector workers, and even foreign nationals who were never authorized to see it.

An internal DHS memo obtained by a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request and shared with WIRED reveals that from March to May of 2023, a DHS online platform used by the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) to share sensitive but unclassified intelligence information and investigative leads among the DHS, FBI, the National Counterterrorism Center, local law enforcement, and intelligence fusion centers across the US was misconfigured, accidentally exposing restricted intelligence information to all users of the platform.

Access to the data, according to a DHS inquiry described in the memo, was meant to be limited to users of the Homeland Security Information Network’s intelligence section, known as HSIN-Intel. Instead it was set to grant access to “everyone,” exposing the information to HSIN’s tens of thousands of users. The unauthorized users who had access included US government workers focused on fields unrelated to intelligence or law enforcement such as disaster response, as well as private sector contractors and foreign government staff with access to HSIN.

“DHS advertises HSIN as secure and says the information it holds is sensitive, critical national security information,” says Spencer Reynolds, an attorney for the Brennan Center for Justice who obtained the memo via FOIA and shared it with WIRED. “But this incident raises questions about how seriously they take information security. Thousands and thousands of users gained access to information they were never supposed to have.”

HSIN-Intel’s data includes everything from law enforcement leads and tips to reports on foreign hacking and disinformation campaigns, to analysis of domestic protest movements. The memo about the HSIN-Intel breach specifically mentions, for instance, a report discussing “protests relating to a police training facility in Atlanta”—likely the Stop Cop City protests opposing the creation of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center—noting that it focused on “media praising actions like throwing stones, fireworks and Molotov cocktails at police.”

In total, according to the memo about the DHS internal inquiry, 439 I&A “products” on the HSIN-Intel portion of the platform were improperly accessed 1,525 times. Of those unauthorized access instances, the report found that 518 were private sector users and another 46 were non-US citizens. The instances of foreign user accesses were “almost entirely” focused on cybersecurity information, the report notes, and 39 percent of all the improperly accessed intelligence products involved cybersecurity, such as foreign state-sponsored hacker groups and foreign targeting of government IT systems. The memo also noted that some of the unauthorized US users who viewed the information would have been eligible to have accessed the restricted information if they’d asked to be considered for authorization.

“When this coding error was discovered, I&A immediately fixed the problem and investigated any potential harm,” a DHS spokesperson told WIRED in a statement. “Following an extensive review, multiple oversight bodies determined there was no impactful or serious security breach. DHS takes all security and privacy measures seriously and is committed to ensuring its intelligence is shared with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, and private sector partners to protect our homeland from the numerous adversarial threats we face.”

Want a convenient all-in-one charger for your phone, laptop, tablet, and more? Then the UGreen Nexode 65W Charger with Retractable USB-C Cable might be exactly what you’re looking for! Yes, the model names are almost always this long.

This charging block comes with an integrated USB-C cable, meaning you don’t have to purchase one separately or worry about your charging wire falling out. It can be pulled out gradually to a range of lengths up to 2.3ft (0.69m), and snugly tucked away by gently pulling the cable and returning it to its magnetic cradle. On top of that, the integrated cable is nice and flexible, meaning it can flex to your environment without too much trouble.

And, if that wasn’t enough, there are two additional USB slots on the unit, enabling you to charge three devices simultaneously. One is a USB-C slot and must be used on its own to get the full 65W (the retractable cable is only capable of 60W in single-port mode), and the other is USB-A if you want to make use of an old wire.

All of this flexibility and versatility is great, but how about performance? Well, I charged my Samsung Galaxy S24 FE – which has a 4,700mAh battery – using the retractable cable. I also juiced up my Sony WH-1000XM6 via the USB-C port and LG Tone Free T90S with the USB-A alternative. And even with all ports in use, my phone went from 1% to 100% in well under 80 minutes – which is very speedy indeed.

With that said, there are a couple of performance quirks that are worth pointing too. I already mentioned that the retractable cable can’t hit the max 65W power output, but it also omits support for Samsung Super Charge 2.0 45W. That is, however, admittedly only relevant to a small crop of Samsung devices at the moment.

In addition, multi-port power disruption may not suit all users. If you charge three devices simultaneously, you get 45W from the retractable cable, but just 7.5W out of the other two. I was also perplexed by the fact that when dual-charging with the USB-C and USB-A port only, you’re still capped at 7.5W per port, even without using the integrated wire.

But, regardless, if you just need to charge your phone and say, a pair of earbuds and headphones, the triple-port distribution should still be good enough overall.

Elsewhere, the charger is well built. It’s durable, compact given its 65W maximum power output, and has an attractive silvery finish. The UK model doesn’t have foldable prongs, which is a shame, but this isn’t the case over in the US.

The charger also harnesses GaN technology to offer a strong suite of protection against issues like overheating, short-circuiting, overvoltage, and more. I never felt this model get too hot during the testing process, and I didn’t experience any performance dips whatsoever.

So it’s safe to say that I’m a fan of this UGreen charger. I love the convenience of the built-in cable, it can charge my phone in a pinch, and it’s pleasingly compact for when I’m on the go. It’s also pretty cost efficient with a list price of $49.99 / £39.99 – though I’ve already seen it on sale for less than $35 / £28, so keep your eyes peeled for a sweet deal.

CZ Urges Hong Kong to Act Fast to Compete as Global Crypto Hub

Chanpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, Co-Founder and largest shareholder of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, believes that Hong Kong has the potential to become a hub for digital assets, if it moves quickly.

In a recent interview with the South China Morning Post, CZ emphasized that the region has all the potential to rival the US and the UAE in the crypto space, but warned that regulatory inertia could hold it back.

“We shouldn’t evaluate a place’s future potential based on its current status,” CZ said. “We should assess it based on the speed of change.”

Zhao urged Hong Kong authorities to open up faster, especially by allowing more cryptocurrencies to be traded on licensed exchanges. Currently, only four, Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Avalanche (AVAX), and Chainlink (LINK), are approved. He argued that this limited selection was “not enough,” suggesting Hong Kong adopt a model like Japan’s, where exchanges have more freedom in deciding which tokens to list.

“There’s nothing magical about what the US, the UAE, or other countries are doing,” he added. “Maybe tomorrow, there could be a meeting in Hong Kong where [officials] say, ‘Look, we’re going to change some things.’”

CZ, who also regularly advises regulators around the world, described Hong Kong’s current crypto framework as overly cautious. He shared that while he does understand this stance, he believes it could slow progress. “When going from no regulation to regulation … most regulators would tend to err on the cautious side.”

This caution is evident in Hong Kong’s new stablecoin rules, which came into effect on August 1. The regulations impose strict controls around reserves, anti-money laundering, and user verification, causing some industry hesitation.

Cz’s Post-Binance Journey: From Prison to Blockchain Mentorship

Cz resigned as Binance CEO in 2023 after pleading guilty to US money laundering charges. He was imprisoned for four months and was released in September 2024. Despite past legal troubles he remains active in the space, focusing on mentorship and supporting BNB-Chain, an ecosystem now powering over 4,000 blockchain projects.

Though CZ holds a significant share of BNB tokens, he said he doesn’t own equity in most BNB Chain projects. He sees blockchain as still in its early days, comparing its development to the internet in 2000. He believes wider adoption will come as AI-driven tools become commonplace in daily life.

Meanwhile, despite being enthusiastic about crypto’s future, in the same interview, CZ offered a cautionary note on applying old-world terms to new technologies: “If we use an old term like ‘banking’ to describe a new industry, we need to be careful.”
