Build island factory towns for fat cats in Whiskerwood, the latest sooty strategy sim from Hooded Horse and the Railgrade devs

by admin September 19, 2025

Whenever possible, I like to sucker-punch everybody’s weekend plans by blogging the release of a huge 4X strategy game, factory sim or other managerial timesink last thing on Friday. In this case, I’m ambushing you with the avid rodent carpentry of Whiskerwood, the new city builder from Railgrade developers Minakata Dynamics and Manor Lords publishers Hooded Horse. It’s got 40 different commodities, an elaborate weather simulation, and a demo out now on Steam. Haha, yes! You are welcome.

In Whiskerwood, you are a mouse mayor setting up island colonies on behalf of some bastard fat cats. Yes, this one’s a straight-shooting allegory, but going by the release date trailer, any transferable learnings about the plight of the mouse proletariat come a distinct second to the joy of plaiting conveyor belts.

Watch on YouTube

“Though your ship arrives with an initial supply of resources and a starting band of mice, you must quickly establish core structures, essential services, and production capabilities to ensure continued growth and prosperity,” comments the Steam page. “Establish waste management and healthcare facilities, ensure buildings are properly heated and maintained, and send forth your mice to fell trees, mine mountains, and tend to the fields and fish.

“The cats will demand their due,” it goes on, “and your own citizens will abandon the colony if their needs aren’t met on a daily basis – you must strike a perfect balance between the needs of the mouse and the demands of the cat.” Cue opening bars of the Circle of Life.

Other bulletpoints stress the role of verticality. Given that you’re building on fairly titchy islands, you’ll soon need to layer them up by either plunging underground or stretching your production facilities up mountainsides. It doesn’t seem quite as extreme as All Wall Fall, in which your teetering metropoli are subject to actual real-time physics, but those mice factories do look rather cramped and precarious.

Your mice colonists have distinct attributes that fit certain tasks, together with preferences and weaknesses. Some are cool with labouring underground, others are all fine and dandy with air pollution. Up to a point, anyway. In good news for the bleeding hearts who feel bad about forcing virtual animals to breath smog for 100 hours, the Steam page suggests that you can one day overthrow the cats.

“Come rain or shine, the shipments must be fulfilled to feline satisfaction lest they call upon their henchmen to violently remind you of your duties,” it thunders. “Will you forever serve this oppressive paw? Or will you raise your whiskers in defiance?”

The game simulates a whole kaboodle of things. Different growing conditions per crop, for instance: you’ll want damp caves for mushrooms, good soil and sunlight for wheat, and high ground for potatoes. (I grow potatoes. I wasn’t aware they were best planted on hilltops.) If starting terrain conditions are suboptimal, you can lay hot water pipes to create greenhouse environments. All this and: naval combat! You’ll be able to send forth galleons of nautical nibblers to scout new islands and hopefully not get the shit kicked out of them by pirates.

One comparison is the beaver-powered Timberborn, one of our best building games, but I’m also slightly reminded of fellow Hooded Horse production Against The Storm, sans roguelike elements. Whiskerwood launches into early access on 6th November, and you can find that demo on Steam.

Famous Race-Losing Horse Who Inspired An Umamusume Character Has Died

by admin September 11, 2025

With a career record of 113 losses and no wins, racehorse Haru Urara became an unintentional pop culture icon in Japan and beyond. The beloved race-losing horse inspired one of Umamusume: Pretty Derby’s horse-girl characters, and her death this week has been marked by many well beyond the racing sphere.

After making her debut in 1998, racehorse Haru Urara became famous for her reliable losing streak, becoming a household name across Japan and for some a kind of patron deity for losers who nevertheless refuse to give up.

Haru Urara lends her name and trademark losing streak to one of the characters in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, a game and anime franchise centered around anthropomorphised horse-girls who double as racers and idols. Though the racehorse Haru Urara retired in 2006, the Umamusume character made more people aware of her quirky background, with the anime and game seeing a trend of fans coming to visit the horse where she was spending her retirement at Matha Farm.

Haru Urara died at the age of 29, Eurogamer reports, but her legacy will live on in the form of an unlucky but endlessly positive anime horse girl in a surprisingly popular gacha game.

Umamusume was first announced as a gacha game back in 2016, but due to delays the anime adaptation released first in 2018. While the free-to-play game was released in Japan in 2021, it didn’t see a release outside of Asia until June this year. Umamusume’s worldwide Steam release proved popular with gamers, with the game hitting a peak of over 87,000 concurrent players in its first month of release. The game is also available globally on iOS and Android.

Japanese horse jockey academy rejects all applicants for first time in 40 years due to weight

by admin September 4, 2025

A horse jockey training academy in Japan has rejected all of its applicants for the first time in 40 years, partly due to concerns over the hopeful riders’ weight.

The Japan Racing Association, founded in 1982, trains up-and-coming horse jockeys in the ways of riding, safely handling their animals, and the legalities of horse racing in a rigorous three-year program.

In fact, the JRA is so strict that in 2023, only seven out of 192 total applicants were accepted into its training course.

These candidates will not be making their debut in 2025, though; four of the seven trainees dropped out of the program, and the remaining three riders were deemed unfit to race this year.

In fact, all three of these applicants must repeat a year, meaning that the earliest they’ll be able to grace the track will be sometime in 2026.

The Japan Racing Association disclosed this information in a public statement in September 2025 — and while they didn’t acknowledge any specific reason as to why no new racers were debuting this year, they did mention three big issues.

JRA cites weight concerns after rejecting all applicants’ 2025 debut

First, the JRA cited concerns over the trainees’ weights. In the sport of horseracing, jockeys must maintain a slim physique to protect the health of their horse, as well as ensure fair competition. Essentially, if one horse is carrying too much weight, it’s likely that they’ll fall behind the rest of the riders.

The JRA said that its remaining applicants struggled to meet the necessary race requirements to make their debut this year. In Japan, male jockeys must weigh in at 52-54 kg (114 – 119 lbs). Female racers must weigh even less.

The same is true in other countries. For example, in the United States, riders who want to compete in the famous Kentucky Derby must weigh in below 126 lbs.

Another concern cited by the JRA was the unauthorized use of smartphones. The Association is quite strict about the use of communications devices, partly to help trainees focus on the course and partly to avoid leaking any sensitive information that could compromise a race’s outcome.

As reported by Japanese news outlet SoraNews24, the night before a race, jockeys are prohibited from using communications devices past 9 PM until their race is finished, and must spend the night in a JRA dormitory.

Unfortunately for hopeful riders, this means no playing Umamusume before hitting the racetrack. Instead, they’ve got to focus on their real-life animals or risk getting drop-kicked out of the JRA, Gold Ship-style.
