Monero’s ‘Largest’ Reorg Yet Erases 36 Minutes of Transaction History

by admin September 15, 2025

In brief

  • The network reorganized 18 blocks and invalidated 118 transfers in its deepest rollback yet.
  • Observers linked the event to Qubic’s withheld mining and potential majority hash control.
  • The incident follows Qubic’s attempts last month to do a 51% attack on the network.

Monero has shrugged off its biggest chain rollback in its 12-year history.

The network reorganized 18 blocks, erasing 36 minutes of transaction history and invalidating 118 transfers, according to independent monitors disclosing the incident Saturday.

The native token belonging to the Monero blockchain, XMR, has been little impacted, with it rising more than 5% on the day. It is up nearly 12% on the week to $302.54, CoinGecko data shows.

Recently, an 18-block re-org occurred on Monero’s mainnet. You can check this by inputting alt_chain_info into your monerod console if your node was operating during the re-org:

18 blocks long, from height 3499659 (437 deep), diff 510191663980291508:…

— Monero Research Lab (Unofficial) (@MoneroResearchL) September 14, 2025

“This is the largest reorg Monero has ever seen,” an XMR community podcaster known as Xenu wrote on X, adding that the event shattered the old rule of thumb that ten confirmations were enough to consider a transaction final.

The rollback occurred between September 14 and 15 at block height 3,499,659, when mining pool Qubic released a hidden chain that overtook the main network. Xenu later claimed that Qubic had mined in isolation “because of selfish mining, even after all their reorgs.”

Representatives for Monero’s open-sourcing project and Qubic did not immediately return Decrypt’s request for comment.

Selfish mining is when a miner withholds blocks they find and later publishes a longer chain that rewrites recent transactions. The tactic takes advantage of proof-of-work rules that reward cumulative work without distinguishing between steady contributions and privately hoarded blocks.

Under Monero’s proof-of-work rules, the longest valid chain is considered the “real” history, so nodes immediately switch over.

In the latest case, Qubic’s withheld chain grew longer than the public one. When it was released, nodes automatically accepted it as the valid history, forcing the network to discard the previous 18 blocks and the 118 transactions they contained.

The move effectively erased more than half an hour of Monero’s recent activity, even though other miners had already confirmed those payments. The reorg also demonstrated that ten confirmations did not provide adequate assurance, leading exchanges to extend their requirements.

Last month, Qubic attempteda 51% attack on Monero as it developed ways to “experiment” and “help” guard the network against future attacks.

A 51% attack happens when someone controls more than half of a blockchain’s computer power and can change how new transactions are recorded, block or reverse them, and potentially spend coins twice (double-spend).

While that attempt was questioned, some community estimates at the time suggested it may have briefly reached majority control.

Payments once considered final were erased, pointing to how concentrated mining power threatens the network. Some users said they would stop accepting Monero until stability returns, while others urged miners to move to smaller pools.

Terence Crawford moved up two divisions to challenge Canelo Alvarez and scored the biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision victory to win the undisputed super middleweight championship on Saturday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Crawford, a four-division world champion, put his name in the history books by becoming the first men’s fighter in the four-belt era (since 2007) to become an undisputed champion in three weight classes (junior welterweight, welterweight and super middleweight).

Crawford had fought most of his career between 135 and 147 pounds. He moved up a weight class to 154 in August 2024 and defeated Israil Madrimov to win the WBA junior middleweight title before taking a year to build up for the fight against Canelo.

Canelo is also a four-division champion. His only three losses are to Crawford, Floyd Mayweather in 2013 and Dmitry Bivol in 2022, when Canelo moved up to light heavyweight to challenge for a world title. The loss to Crawford snapped a six-fight winning streak.

Relive the fight round-by-round here.

BTC’s September Low May Already Be In, History Suggests

by admin September 12, 2025

Historical data suggests that bitcoin BTC$108,783.53 has likely put in its September 2025 low, around $107,000 on the first of the month.

Looking back to July 2024, a consistent pattern emerges where bitcoin tends to form a bottom for the month within the first 10 days of each month.

The notable exceptions were February, June and August 2025, when the lows came later in the month, but even then, the market experienced a correction within those first 10 days before resuming its broader trend.

Speculatively, the reason bitcoin often puts in its low within the first 10 days of the month could be tied to institutional portfolio rebalancing or the timing of key macroeconomic events that tend to cluster early in the month.

“It’s worth noting that several futures and options markets expire on the final day of the month or the first day of the next, this can lead to short term volatility and a subsequent lull in trading activity as traders either rollover trades or reposition entirely,” said Oliver Knight, deputy managing editor, data and tokens, at CoinDesk.

Of course, past performance is not a guarantee of future results, but as Q4 approaches it is worth noting that this quarter has historically been bitcoin’s strongest, delivering an average return of 85%. October in particular has been especially favorable, with only two losing months since 2013.

New Art Book Explores Mortal Kombat’s Bloody 30-Year Visual History

by admin September 10, 2025

More than 30 years ago, Mortal Kombat hit arcades, kicking off the hyper-violent franchise that now spans numerous video games, big-budget movies, comic books, and even an animated series. Soon, fans can get an inside look at the franchise’s gore-spattered history thanks to the upcoming art book, Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory, written by Ian Flynn–the lead writer of IDW Publishing’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and Sonic Frontiers. The $50 hardcover book will be released on October 21, 2025, and is available for preorder at Amazon.

$50 (was $60) | Releases October 21

According to the book’s Amazon store page, Mortal Kombat: Flawless Victory will feature over 300 pages of concept sketches, renders, and illustrations. The art will be presented alongside exclusive interviews with the development team at NetherRealm Studios, commentary from Flynn, and an in-depth look at fan-favorite characters like Scorpion, Raiden, and Liu Kang.

While August 2025 is a bit of a long wait, the silver lining here is that you won’t be charged until the book ships, and thanks to Amazon’s preorder price guarantee, you’ll get it for the best price.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is a blast from the past

The best way to experience Mortal Kombat history is through the original games, and fortunately, they’re all coming to PC and console later this year. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection from retro specialists Digital Eclipse launches on December 12, and this bundle includes the original trilogy of arcade games, Mortal Kombat 4, Game Boy ports, several spin-offs, and a look behind the scenes with archival materials and newly filmed interviews.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection will be available in three editions: Standard, Deluxe, and Kollector’s. The Deluxe Edition comes with the game, a steelbook case, magnet, poster, and more, while the Kollector’s Edition offers all of those extras and a controller-holder shaped like Goro, an arcade token, and several other extras. Preorders for all editions are now live.

While the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie isn’t something you’d consider for a historical tour of the franchise yet, it’s still a ton of fun to watch. With its sequel delayed to May 2026, now is a great time to revisit the movie since it’s getting a new 4K steelbook release. The new edition launches October 7, and the cover features Scorpion’s mask on the front and his deadly kunai on the back. This version also comes with a voucher to claim the digital version of Mortal Kombat, giving you the option to download or stream the film on a wide variety of apps and devices.

If you’re a fan of gaming history, you can check out several other books right now covering various consoles and games. Game Boy enthusiasts will want to check out The Game Boy Encyclopedia–a book that explores the hundreds of games released for the handheld–by veteran video game journalist Chris Scullion, who has also authored several other books on the topic,

Conjuring Last Rites Just Made Horror Movie Box Office History

by admin September 8, 2025

The Conjuring: Last Rites had a massive opening weekend. The ninth film in the Conjuring franchise and fourth entry in the main series racked up over $190 million globally and set a new record for horror films. And it continues Warner Bros’ incredible and historic hot streak.

Arriving in theaters on September 5, The Conjuring: Last Rites brought in $84 million domestically alone, making it the largest domestic opening in the franchise’s history. The horror flick, which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as famous paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, collected $110 million internationally, as reported by Variety. Combined, the film brought in $194 million total.

That bonkers total, which far exceeds WB’s expectations, is not only the biggest opening in the franchise’s history, but it also beat out 2017’s It, which earned $190 million during its opening weekend, and is now the largest debut for a horror flick ever. The entire Conjuring universe, which started in 2013, now sits at $2.3 billion in earnings, making it the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time.

And despite lukewarm critical reviews, Last Rites continues WB’s impressive and historic box office hot streak. The Conjuring: Last Rites is now the seventh film in a row from WB to make $40 million or more during its opening weekend. It started with Minecraft in April and has continued with each WB movie released since then. This kind of hot streak has never happened before. Will it continue? WB’s next movie, One Battle After Another, might not be able to keep the streak going, but we’ll find out when it arrives in theaters later this month.

One final fact: The top three horror film openings in the United States are now The Conjuring: Last Rites, It, and It: Chapter Two. And guess which studio produced and distributed all of those films? Warner Bros.

Inside McLaren’s recent history of team orders and close calls

Formula 1 is unusual for many reasons, but one element never fails to add drama: two teammates fighting over a single drivers’ title. On the one hand, they are employed by the same team and competing on behalf of more than a thousand employees; on the other, they are chasing their own dreams — ultimately at the expense of the others.

With Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris the only two drivers still in contention for this year’s title, it’s a paradox McLaren is all too familiar with. Ever since the team returned to winning ways at the Miami Grand Prix last year, it has worked tirelessly to ensure a level playing field for its drivers should a title be on the line.

Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix showed how hard it can be to maintain a balance of fairness between two drivers, but the decision to swap Piastri and Norris comes after more than a year of tough decisions and potential flashpoints. Below, we assess how McLaren got here and the precedents that have been set ahead of the eight races that will decide the 2025 season.

2024 Hungarian Grand Prix

What happened?

It’s easy to forget that little over a year ago, McLaren was still adapting to life with a race-winning car. Ahead of the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, Norris only had one win to his name (at that year’s Miami Grand Prix) and Piastri had yet to climb on the top step of an F1 podium. The Hungaroring presented the perfect opportunity for the team to add a second victory to its breakthrough season, but as the race unfolded, the question of which driver deserved to take it became a thorny issue.

Norris started from pole position but was beaten by Piastri into the first corner and had to settle into second place. The order remained the same as the race played out, but McLaren’s first one-two victory since 2021 was still under threat from Lewis Hamilton in third place.

To protect against an undercut from Hamilton, the McLaren pit wall ordered Norris to pit first, in turn giving him a fresh tire advantage over Piastri that meant Norris took the lead when Piastri emerged from his own stop. McLaren made clear to Norris that they wanted to reverse positions once the two cars were comfortably clear of the rest of the field, but the British driver was initially reluctant to comply.

– 2025 Italian Grand Prix recap: F1 results, highlights as Verstappen dominates

“I know you’ll do the right thing,” Norris was told by race engineer Will Joseph. “Well, you should have pitted him first,” Norris replied.

With six laps remaining and still no indication that Norris would yield, Joseph added, “Lando, he can’t catch you up. You’ve proved your point. The way to win a championship is not by yourself. You’re going to need Oscar, and you’re going to need the team.”

Norris finally complied with the order with two laps remaining, ensuring Piastri secured his first career victory and McLaren took the one-two. Precedent set: The Hungary example had clear parallels with Monza’s race on Sunday, and was even referenced by Tom Stallard, Piastri’s race engineer, during their radio exchange.

Put simply, if the usual convention of pitting the lead car first is overridden to protect the second car from a rival, any position change between the McLarens as a result of pitting out of sequence can be expected to be reversed on track.

It seems fair, but the tension and controversy in the Hungary example was significantly ramped up by Norris’ initial reluctance to obey the team order.

2024 Italian Grand Prix

What happened?

Red Bull’s struggle during the second half of the 2024 season opened up the possibility of Norris fighting for the title if results went his way. Up until the Italian Grand Prix, McLaren had loosely acknowledged such a scenario, but stopped short of backing Norris over Piastri in racing situations. That changed after Monza.

Norris arrived in Italy on a high after claiming a dominant victory in Zandvoort, and went on to secure pole position ahead of Piastri on the Monza grid. He fended off an attack from Piastri at the first chicane, but the Australian — playing by the team’s “Papaya rules,” which allow the drivers to fight for position as long as they avoid a collision — pulled a clean and decisive move around the outside of Norris to take the lead at the second chicane.

Norris, boxed in by his teammate and in an effort to avoid a collision, then lost a position to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on the exit of the chicane, dropping him from the lead to third place in the space of just a few corners on the opening lap.

Leclerc went on to secure victory with a one-stop strategy, while Piastri took second place ahead of Norris in third.

Precedent set: Discussions following Monza led to McLaren agreeing to support Norris’ title campaign, particularly in situations where there was a 50/50 call between its drivers. Piastri would not be expected to give up grand prix victories for Norris, but he might be asked to move aside for lower positions. What’s more, moves that resulted in the team losing positions to rivals, like Piastri’s at Monza, were to be avoided.

Piastri, whose own title hopes were slim to none, accepted the new terms of racing on a pragmatic level.

“It is a big ask,” he said at the time. “But they’ve obviously given me a massive opportunity to be in this position both in F1 and at the front of the grid in F1. It’s something that won’t be forgotten, I guess, in the future.

“It will be remembered in the future, and there’s been things in the past, whether it be with upgrades or strategies in some races, that have always been remembered. That’s kind of our way of going racing.”

The relative harmony in the team now is perhaps in part linked to Piastri’s willingness to help Norris at the end of the 2024 season.

2024 Brazil sprint race

What happened?

The only time that McLaren’s decision to favor Norris in the 2024 season run-in had a direct impact on a result was at the Brazilian Grand Prix sprint race. Piastri secured pole and led Norris for the first 22 laps of the race before McLaren asked him to move aside and let his teammate pass with two laps remaining.

Piastri’s immediate compliance with the order was key as a late Virtual Safety Car (VSC) threatened to prevent McLaren from swapping in the final two laps. Norris, clearly uncomfortable with securing the victory via team orders, thanked Piastri after the race.

“Yeah, not proud about it,” he said. “But we work well as a team together. So, I thank Oscar, but we’ve done a great job as a team. Today was the result that we wanted. Oscar deserved it, but we’re doing what we have to do, so I thank him and the team.”

Precedent set: Because McLaren had spent several races talking about its support of Norris’ title bid, the eventual gifted sprint race victory lacked any real controversy. Perhaps the swap could have happened earlier in the race to minimize an emerging threat from Max Verstappen and the rush of doing it before the late VSC; however, ultimately Norris and Piastri were singing from the same hymn sheet.

The fact that it was a sprint race and only resulted in a one-point difference also lessened any controversy, although Norris would not forget the favor.

2024 Qatar sprint race

What happened?

Despite McLaren’s efforts, Verstappen secured the 2024 title at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, meaning Norris and Piastri went back to being treated as equals for the final two races of the season. But at the first sprint race following Brazil, Norris saw an opportunity to repay his teammate and moved over, coming out of the final corner in Qatar to hand victory to Piastri.

The incident was actually a rare occurrence of a McLaren driver disobeying a team order after race engineer Will Joseph told Norris to “finish in this order” in the closing stages. That was partly because the move came with some risk as Piastri had been engaged in a race-long battle with George Russell, who only finished 0.3s off Norris when the McLaren drivers made the swap just before the line.

Piastri acknowledged Norris’ gesture over team radio: “Thank you for the teamwork, much appreciated.”

Precedent set: The driver-initiated switch underlined the sense of fair play between Norris and Piastri, even if it went against the team’s wishes in the final laps.

McLaren were engaged in a tight battle in the constructors’ championship with Ferrari, meaning a loss of a single point could have been painful, but the finishing order ultimately brought smiles to the McLaren pit wall while rewarding Piastri’s compliance in Brazil with the sprint victory he deserved. Any score between the drivers had been settled.

2025 Australian Grand Prix

What happened?

McLaren’s advantage over the rest of the field this year became immediately clear in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix as Norris and Piastri pulled a 16-second gap over Verstappen in drying conditions at Albert Park early in the race. But as they disappeared into the distance, McLaren issued an order on lap 30 for Piastri not to attack Norris until they’d passed some traffic ahead.

Three laps later, Piastri was told he was allowed to race again, but a possible opportunity to take advantage of the lapped cars had been lost.

The incident became a footnote in the story of the opening race as Piastri later slid off the circuit when the rain returned and dropped to ninth at the finish. But it was the first instance of McLaren attempting to control the battle between its two drivers.

Lando Norris triumphant in chaotic Australian Grand Prix

Take a look back at what happened during the first race of the 2025 season in Melbourne.

Precedent set: There was sound logic to McLaren’s team orders — the conditions at the time had left a single drying line on the circuit, and both cars were on worn intermediate tires, making it even more treacherous to go wheel-to-wheel around lapped cars.

But it made clear just how jumpy McLaren was around its drivers racing and that, in certain conditions, intervention could not be ruled out. “We had to go through the back markers and then the update on the weather forecast led us to close for a short period of time the internal racing between our two drivers until we had clarity as to the weather prediction,” team principal Andrea Stella explained after the race.

2025 Canadian Grand Prix

What happened?

Far from a team orders controversy, the collision between Norris and Piastri in Montreal was an example of how the drivers maturely dealt with a flashpoint between them.

The nature of the crash, which saw Norris drive into the rear of Piastri on the pit straight while lining up an overtake, made things easy to deal with, as there was no doubt that Norris was to blame.

The British driver immediately apologized over team radio, while any tension from Piastri’s side was undoubtedly eased by a 12-point extension of his lead in the championship.

Precedent set: A collision between the drivers had been deemed inevitable by many in the team, so Norris taking the blame helped reduce some of the pressure internally. Had the collision had more of an impact on Piastri’s result there may have been a bigger controversy, but the outcome ultimately had no impact on the relationship between the drivers.

2025 Austrian Grand Prix

What happened?

Just one race after Canada, the Austrian Grand Prix provided an example of clean racing between the two McLaren drivers — although Piastri was issued a warning for an attempted move at Turn 4. The Australian locked a front tire as he looked to the inside of Norris at the downhill right-hander and momentarily looked as though he might cause a collision. Norris ultimately held on for victory, with Piastri apologizing for the move at the checkered flag.

Precedent set: McLaren viewed the close call and subsequent apology by Piastri as proof of the standards of fair racing instilled between the two drivers. It was also an opportunity to point to a lesson learned after Canada.

“There was only one situation in which the two cars ended up a little too close, when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando,” Stella said. “We gave Oscar this feedback and I want to acknowledge and once again say that I am proud of Oscar, because as soon as he crossed the finish line, he said, ‘Sorry for the situation in corner four. My bad. I know what I have to do.’

“So I think it’s all very clear. I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada, which was a benign situation, it was just a misjudgment, and we have come out stronger and even more united from there.”

2025 British Grand Prix

What happened?

The British Grand Prix was a rare example of one of McLaren’s drivers asking for a team order to be implemented — albeit unsuccessfully. Piastri looked set to win at Silverstone until he was issued with a 10-second penalty for driving erratically behind the safety car. The decision of the stewards dropped him behind Norris, leaving the Australian feeling hard done by.

“I don’t think the penalty before was very fair,” Piastri said over team radio. “I know it’s a big question, but if you don’t think it was fair either, I think we should swap back and race.”

McLaren ultimately declined the request, resulting in Norris taking an important victory at his home race.

Precedent set: Even while asking the question, Piastri seemed to know what the answer would be. The penalty was a result of his own mistake, and even if McLaren felt 10 seconds was over the top, it made a clear precedent that it would not intervene to overrule the impact of stewards’ decision in races.

However, Stella also pointed out that there were no hard feelings around Piastri raising the question. “We always tell our drivers, don’t keep things in the back of your mind while you drive,” he explained. “If you have a point, if you have a suggestion, if you want to let us know what you’re thinking, just say it.”

2025 Hungarian Grand Prix

What happened?

One year on from its Budapest team orders debacle, and McLaren again found itself explaining certain decisions after the race. Although there were no team orders involved, Norris benefitted from an unfancied one-stop strategy to beat Piastri, who was stuck behind Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari on a two-stop strategy, to victory.

Precedent set: By allowing Norris to take a punt on an alternative strategy, McLaren underlined its policy of free racing between teammates. That not only means letting the drivers fight wheel-to-wheel for positions, but also the more nuanced balancing act of putting the chasing driver on a strategy that has the potential of overhauling his teammate.

“As McLaren Racing, we want to give great racing to Formula 1,” Stella said.

“We want to give our two drivers the possibility to utilise, express their talent, pursue their aspirations, their personal success, and this needs to happen within the boundaries of the team interest and the fairness, the sportsmanship, and the respect for one another. When we have a deviating strategy, when we have different options, I think this is part of racing.”

2025 Italian Grand Prix

What happened?

McLaren’s most recent use of team orders is perhaps its most controversial of the past two seasons. With Max Verstappen leading Sunday’s race, the pit wall opted to extend the stints of both Norris and Piastri for as long as possible to benefit from a potential late safety car.

However, that meant Leclerc closing in on Piastri ahead of the stops, leading Norris to suggest McLaren should Piastri first, albeit with the caveat “only if he doesn’t get the undercut, otherwise I’ll box first”.

Piastri’s pit stop was one of the fastest of the race and saw him come out 4.5 seconds clear of Leclerc. Norris pitted next, but a problem changing the front-left tire meant he stood stationary for over five seconds and lost position to Piastri when he reemerged.

Is disaster for Oscar Pisatri the only title chance for Lando Norris?

Laurence Edmondson looks at how a DNF in Zandvoort has left Lando Norris’ title hopes on the ropes.

Two laps later and Piastri was told to give the position back to his teammate, with his race engineer saying, “This is the same as Hungary last year, I know it’s painful, but you will have five laps remaining from now.” Norris went on to take second place ahead of Piastri, reducing the Australian’s lead in the championship to 31 points.

Precedent set: This is where it gets tricky. By swapping positions, you could argue that any slow pit stops in the future should be rectified by team orders. But Stella insisted the crux of the issue was not the slow stop but that Piastri was given the first pit stop. Viewed that way, the decision was consistent with Hungary 2024.

“We pursued the team interest to capitalize as much as possible, and in the team interests we had to go first with Oscar and then with Lando,” Stella said. “But the clear intent was this is not going to deliver a swap of positions.

“So the fact that we went first with Oscar, compounded by the slow pit stop with Lando, led to a swap of positions. And we thought it was absolutely the right thing to go back to the situation preexisting the pitstop and then let the guys race. This is what we did and this is what we think is compliant with our principles.”

He added: “We will review also the situation whereby it is a slow pitstop in isolation. We already have our principles in relation to that. We will review our principles in relation to that. And reinforce the direction if this is in agreement with our drivers.”

The problem McLaren now faces is making future decisions in line with the increasingly complex web of precedents set over the past two years. However, as has been the case throughout the team’s rise to success, it intends to address the issues openly with the drivers to avoid as many nasty surprises as possible.

Anthropic agrees to pay $1.5 billion to authors whose work trained AI in priciest copyright settlement in U.S. history

by admin September 6, 2025

As reported by the New York Times, AI company Anthropic has agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement in a groundbreaking copyright lawsuit involving some 500,000 authors. Anthropic illegally downloaded the authors’ books and used them to train its AI model. The total settlement for this case is the largest for any copyright case in U.S. history, although the payout to each affected author is only $3,000.

The lawsuit, filed in August 2024, accused Anthropic of benefiting from pirated copyrighted books, stating, “An essential component of Anthropic’s business model—and its flagship ‘Claude’ family of large language models (or “LLMs”)—is the largescale theft of copyrighted works.”

It goes on to highlight the harm being done to authors, which goes beyond the theft of their work: “Anthropic’s Claude LLMs compromise authors’ ability to make a living, in that the LLMs allow anyone to generate—automatically and freely (or very cheaply)—texts that writers would otherwise be paid to create and sell. Anthropic’s LLMs, which dilute the commercial market for Plaintiffs’ and the Class’s works, were created without paying writers a cent. Anthropic’s immense success is a direct result of its copyright infringement.”

As a result of that copyright infringement, Anthropic has offered to pay $1.5 billion to settle the class action lawsuit before it goes to trial. This case sets a standard for the growing wave of copyright lawsuits against AI companies, but it isn’t as clear-cut as it might look. Judge William Alsup of the Northern District of California ruled that Anthropic is allowed to use copyrighted books to train its AI models if it obtains those books legally. The settlement is the result of pirating the books, not feeding them to an AI, which has been ruled “fair use.”

Additionally, the settlement Anthropic offered is a historically high sum, but it’s a miniscule bit of the company’s overall value, which sits at $183 billion at the time of writing. Earlier this week, Anthropic raised more money in a single round of funding than the entire settlement in this copyright case. Meanwhile, the $3,000 for each author impacted by the class action lawsuit is less than a typical book’s advance.

It’s also worth noting that $1.5 billion is actually far less than Anthropic could have potentially been ordered to pay if it hadn’t settled. Willful copyright infringement can result in fines of up to $150,000 per copyrighted work. The pirated data sets Anthropic used contained 7 million books. If Anthropic had been forced to pay the maximum amount for each count of copyright infringement, it could have been financial ruin for the AI company. Of course, the maximum possible fine would have been unlikely, but Anthropic still might have had to pay much more than it settled for.

This lawsuit against Anthropic is just one of several like it. Authors also have ongoing lawsuits with other AI companies, including Microsoft and OpenAI. Back in June, authors lost a similar lawsuit against Meta, but only because the judge ruled that they hadn’t offered enough evidence, stating, “This ruling does not stand for the proposition that Meta’s use of copyrighted materials to train its language models is lawful.”

Trump’s New History Exhibit Features Fake Quotes From AI-Generated Founding Fathers

by admin September 3, 2025

The White House recently commissioned a new history exhibit in Washington, D.C. created by the far-right “education” group PragerU. The exhibit features 82 paintings and 40 AI videos, presenting a rather distorted view of America’s founding.

The AI-generated videos even include fake quotes from the founding fathers, including one that seems like a joke. But the folks at PragerU are serious about their mission, even if the intention is to own the libs.

What kind of quotes are we talking about? The video of an AI-generated John Adams, which is available online at Prager U’s website, shows the second president saying, “facts do not care about our feelings.” That’s a phrase that became popularized in the 2010s by far-right influencers like Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk.

Historically, White House exhibits haven’t included such obvious attempts at trolling.

It should be noted that the closed captioning reads “your feelings” rather than “our feelings,” the latter being how it’s spoken by the AI John Adams for whatever reason. But that’s precisely the kind of attention to detail you’d expect from PragerU.

The new exhibit is dubbed the Founders Museum and was created for the lead-up to the semiquincentennial celebration (250th anniversary) that will be happening in 2026. PragerU created the exhibit with the White House Task Force 250, which is overseeing the semiquincentennial activities, according to NPR.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, who has said she’s trying to put herself out of a job by shutting down the Department of Education, is featured on PragerU’s website in a promotional video insisting that the new exhibit’s “patriotic education does not mean propaganda.” McMahon infamously referred to AI as “A1” (like the steak sauce) at a recent speaking engagement.

The PragerU videos are also filled with the kind of AI-generated distortions and anomalies that we’ve come to expect. Some of the videos include figures with either too many or too few fingers. Generative AI tools still struggle with human hands, creating alien-like figures that seem to haunt the PragerU creations, as you can see below in a screenshot from the John Adams video.

© PragerU / Gizmodo

PragerU is notorious for creating inaccurate learning materials that sanitize history. One video that went viral in recent years shows Christopher Columbus scolding children for judging him about slavery. “Being taken as a slave is better than being killed, no? I don’t see the problem,” the animated Columbus says.

It’s no surprise that PragerU would create ridiculous nonsense. The shocking part is that their version of history is being legitimized by the U.S. government. The new videos also inject plenty of mentions of God, which is certainly a choice. The founder of PragerU, Dennis Prager, often talks about spreading “Judeo-Christian values.”

Aside from the larger fabrications, like John Adams quoting Ben Shapiro, there are also countless smaller issues with the way the history is presented at the new exhibit. For example, Samuel Adams says that he was called a “troublemaker,” a word that didn’t exist until four decades after his death and wouldn’t actually become popular until the 20th century. It’s a small issue, of course, but it’s the kind of thing that probably wouldn’t have been permitted by museum curators who actually know any history.

PragerU is an unaccredited “university” that doesn’t hold classes or issue diplomas. But its materials are still finding their way into the hands of impressionable kids. PragerU’s materials have been approved for use in public schools in at least ten states, according to the company’s website, including Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas. That’s up from five states in early 2024.

Donald Trump has major issues with the way history is taught in the 21st century. The president has criticized leaders at the Smithsonian, calling the institution “out of control,” during his regular rants. Trump even complained in one post on Truth Social that the Smithsonian was discussing “how bad Slavery was,” among other things. To be clear, slavery is bad, no matter what folks like Trump and PragerU’s animated Christopher Columbus might insist. And learning about slavery is necessary to understand American history.

PragerU is becoming normalized as a reliable source of information, whether it’s in America’s classrooms or at the White House. And the nation is certainly going to be dumber and more fascist as a result. But it doesn’t seem like there’s much that can be done about any of that at the moment.

Trump is picking off America’s institutions one by one, destroying our understanding of U.S. history and bulldozing any opposition. All of that is happening while America’s “opposition” leaders like Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries insist fighting back isn’t the savvy thing to do.

What would a guy like John Adams think about bowing to tyrants like Trump?

Nolan McLean dominates Tigers, makes Mets history with 4-0 start

by admin September 3, 2025

DETROIT — Rookie Nolan McLean continued his brilliant start to his MLB career, retiring his final 14 batters Tuesday night to lead the Mets to a 12-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

McLean became the first Mets pitcher to go 4-0 in his first four starts, and just the first pitcher in the majors to do so since Chase Anderson, who started 5-0 with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2014.

After a rocky first inning, McLean finished with seven strikeouts while giving up two runs on three hits and three walks. He is the first pitcher to win his first four career starts while allowing two or fewer runs in each start since Jered Weaver, who did it in his first seven starts for the Los Angeles Angels in 2006.

“Another impressive outing for him,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “We all saw how in that first inning, especially the sweeper and the curveball … he didn’t have command of those pitches. A couple of walks, and they got him with a couple of singles there. That’s what you call pitching. Understanding that you have to make adjustments and find a way to get through five or six innings, and he was able to do that.”

Mendoza added: “Another really good sign for a kid that is just making his fourth start at the big league level.”

McLean’s 28 strikeouts through his first four starts ranks second in Mets history behind only Nolan Ryan (29).

Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who homered twice Tuesday night, said McLean’s work ethic has a lot to do with the incredible start to his career.

“I know everyone’s going to be talking about all the great stuff he’s doing on the field, which is for sure warranted, but how he’s going about his business, the day to day, it’s super impressive,” Alonso said.

“And that’s the reason why he’s able to do what he’s been able to do on the field. … He’s been a pro since he’s come up, and there’s no shock and awe for why he’s found his success.”

Juan Soto and Luis Torrens also homered for the Mets, who won the series opener 10-8 on Monday. New York moved five games ahead of Cincinnati for the final National League wild card.

The American League Central-leading Tigers have lost seven of nine.

Alonso’s first homer was a 435-foot drive in the first inning that landed between the first and second row of shrubs behind the center-field wall. Soto and Alonso hit back-to-back solo shots in a six-run seventh that gave the Mets a 12-2 cushion.

Soto has 37 home runs in his first season with New York, including five homers in the past five games. Alonso’s second homer was his 33rd of the year.

Jeff McNeil drove in three runs and finished with three of New York’s 17 hits. Brandon Nimmo and Brett Baty also had three hits for the Mets.

“History is repeating itself” The real-world inspirations of Hell is Us are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago

by admin August 28, 2025

“The true horrors of war are a very important narrative pillar of the game. We wanted to do it justice. It’s never done gratuitously, it’s never done in a grotesque way, [but] we want to depict human conflicts as realistically as possible.”

I am speaking with technical designer Simon Girard about Hell is Us, the upcoming action-adventure game from Rogue Factor. In Hell is Us, players take on the role of Rémi, who is searching for his parents in the fictional country of Hadea. However, Hadea is being ravaged by infighting and in the midst of a civil war.

This set up immediately brings to mind the current situation in Gaza, and the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people, which begs the question: Did real world events inspire Hell is Us?

“Our creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête is a huge history buff, and one of his topics of interest is armed conflict, specifically civil wars, because the nature is of neighbours-against-neighbours,” Girard says of the general civil war theme. “It’s not one country against another. It’s people who are the same, right? They’re divided amongst either geographical or cultural or religious lines, but they’re one in the same.”

So while Hadea is a fictional country and Hell is Us is telling a fictional story, Girard says this has been a topic Jacques-Belletête had been wanting to explore for some time now, and inspiration was taken from 90s wars, which is shown in the clothing. “But, in terms of answering your question, the two main themes we explore with war are the human emotions that are causing this conflict, because the exacerbation of certain emotions can lead to conflict, and the cyclical nature of violence,” Girard continues. This cyclical nature is central to Hell is Us’ overall narrative, and Girard says it is “uncanny” that 30 years later, we are once again living in a world where a civil war is at the centre of many news stories on a daily basis.

“History is repeating itself, and I think without us taking a moralising approach – that’s not what we are about – there is something that resounds with a lot of people because yes [Hell is Us] is far away, is fictional, but at the same time, it has a powerful echo in it.” He reflects on the announcement trailer for Hell is Us, which showed a female civilian executing a soldier kneeling down in front of her, saying his people killed her family. That trailer happened to come out around the time of 2022’s Crimea attacks.

“We find a big echo in our own reality.”

“The studio wanted to create this fictional story. It had no basis in modern history, had no pretence in being a mirror-like reality. It’s a fictional story in a fictional country. But then this happens, right? So, again, we find a big echo in our own reality,” Girard says. He notes Hell is Us has over 160 NPCs, and all of them have been impacted by the war going on around them, be they victims, bystanders or participants.

“No one is left indifferent,” he says.

More generally, Hell is Us has “three different narrative layers”, Girard tells me. The first is Rémi’s own story and his motivations. The second is of the civil war going on in Hadea, and the third is of The Calamity, which resulted in the appearance of supernatural creatures that also inhabit the land (see image below).

“They’re all intertwined somehow, and all these layers are very important to the story, or the multiple stories that you’ll get out of this experience,” Girard says, without giving too much away for fear of spoiling something. He adds, however, there are “strong narrative and mechanical links and implications” between everything that has been teased so far, but it is up to the player to find out just what they are.

“It’s a very rich environment for us to play with and tell stories with.”

“It’s a type of game I am sure will have subreddits of people trying to [piece together] the same things,” the developer says, talking about the many different items and “information elements” players will be able to find scattered throughout Hell is Us, and which will help shape the world’s narrative. “I am sure people will go very meta outside of the game and try to draw links between some stuff, and reorder things historically or phonologically,” he says, likening it to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings adaptations. “You see this three hour long movie, and it’s a full set piece from beginning to end. But, it’s based on material that’s much larger, right? There’s this whole world behind it.”

The team has built Hell is Us’ world from scratch, Girard continues, and that includes weaving in a fictional history dating back hundreds of years. This means players will be able to find out why Hadea became a hermit kingdom, and discover more about the ruins that lie among more modern settlements. “It’s a very rich environment for us to play with and tell stories with,” Girard says.

But while Hell is Us will include plenty of lore to untangle, the developer isn’t including what some would say are video game staples – a map and quest markers. The team has instead focused on environmental cues to guide players to where they should go, and a compass to allow them to orient themselves.

“It transpires in the level design, it transpires in the environmental design.”

Girard tells me about a settlement players will come across early on in Hell is Us. At one entrance, they may come across a military captain, who mentions an outpost in the town. “But let’s say you enter the town another way, and you miss the captain, the first thing you can find is either the blacksmith shop [which is illuminated], or there are other characters you can talk to who will also have threads you can fold in that will bring you into what you need to do for your main quest,” he explains. “It’s important to give multiple entry points into the main storyline at all times… and you may even stumble into story elements organically. Your exploration and time is always rewarded in different ways, ranging from the main story, secondary quest lines or just lore elements.”

The Hell is Us team decided early on that they weren’t going to include a traditional map, with this idea being a “design philosophy” for everything else. “It transpires in the level design, it transpires in the environmental design, it gives you different vistas in the background that also represent places that catch your eye from afar that you want to go to,” Girard elaborates. “In interior dungeons that can be very maze-like, we think ‘how can we make each room stand out so you can orient yourself’. So, the frescos [in these areas] are all unique, so you are never lost as a player.”

Hell is Us also features audio cues, which players can follow to help find their way through the world. An example of this happens early in the game, and those who have played the demo will recall it – the wind chimes in the woodland area. “If you’re playing on a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system, you could close your eyes and just navigate using the audio at that point,” Girard says. “It’s a small segment, but it’s such a nice touch.”

My time with Girard is coming to an end, but it is clear the developer has so much more he wishes he could share. “It’s been a labour of love and passion from our team,” he says, catching sight of the time. “We began pre-production of this before the pandemic in 2020, so it’s five and a half years in the making. We began with 35 people, we are now 55. The studio has grown, we’ve built up pools and pipelines and ways of communicating and working together which are now defining what the future of Rogue Factor will be like for us, beyond everything commercial.”

“Don’t get me wrong, the more copies we sell the happier we are,” he closes with a laugh, “but beyond that, for us to be able to say this is Rogue Factor now, this is who we are and these are the types of experiences you can expect from us going forward, that was our main driving force… to find our own space and our own identity, where we can welcome people and have something interesting to present to them.”

Hell is Us – which stars Elias Toufexis, aka Adam Jensen from the Deus Ex series, as Rémi – is set to release next week, on 4th September.
