Highlights from Gamescom Opening Night Live: Black Myth: Zhong Kui steals the show

by admin August 20, 2025

Gamescom Opening Night Live was once again hosted by Geoff Keighley last night, and GamesIndustry.biz was there in the Confex hall in Cologne to see the whole thing unfold live.

In the build up to the entrance of the big man at 8pm, the 5,000-strong audience was treated to a pre-recorded ‘pre-show’, featuring various game trailers that didn’t quite get past the velvet rope into the main event.

Notably, the only one of these trailers to get an actual cheer from the steadily warming up audience was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearls of Destruction, a retro 2D brawler from Bitmap Bureau and Limited Run Games.

Coming after the rapturous reception for Bitmap Bureau’s retro-styled Terminator 2D: No Fate, it just goes to show the nostalgia drug remains as potent as ever.

Although nothing like the whooping for He-Man, a few other pre-show trailers gained some smatterings of applause, including Long Gone (funded by Outersloth), Valor Mortis, PVKK, the Chinese single-player action RPG Swords of Legends, and Saber Interactive’s new truck simulator Road Kings, which will no doubt go down well with the Euro Truck Simulator crowd.

Then it was time for Keighley to glide onto the stage in his trademark comfortable brown shoes. “It turns out that E3 didn’t die,” he pronounced, “it just moved right here to Germany.”

Setting aside Keighley’s own role in the murder, it’s difficult to compare the atmosphere of this vast German hall to the fan fervour you might see in days gone by in LA. The German audience seems far more muted and less prone to spontaneous outbursts.

Then again, it does feel like Gamescom has been building some serious momentum over the past few years in the absence of its US rival.

Right off the bat, Keighley revealed new gameplay footage of Hollow Knight: Silksong and proclaimed a demo would be playable at Gamescom, to the elation of the crowd.

The long-awaited game now has nearly five million wish lists on Steam, and the anticipation for it is reaching fever pitch.

Then it was on to a new trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which focused on some freaky-deaky, hallucinatory levels, reminiscent of the Scarecrow sequences in Batman: Arkham Asylum. The big headline feature for CoD this year is a two-to-four-player co-op – and it all culminates in a new PvE end game that could be a big draw.

Lord of the Fallen 2 got a surprise unveiling, along with a new anime based on From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice called Sekiro: No Defeat.

But one of the biggest reveals at the show was Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which focuses on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

TT Games’ head of development Jonathan Smith was wheeled out on stage to enthuse about the new title. “We are so thrilled to be revealing this game,” he said. “This is the definitive, essential Batman story.”

And it certainly seemed to be thrilling the assembled crowd, receiving one of the warmest receptions of the entire night.

Smith explained that it would be the first of the studio’s Lego titles to have different difficulty levels (‘Caped Crusader’ and ‘Dark Knight’ mode), and it appears to be a lot more involved than Lego Batman games of the past, featuring combat styled similarly to the Arkham titles.

More announcements followed. Warhammer Dawn of War IV is on the way in 2026, although developed by King Art Games rather than Relic Entertainment.

Monster Hunter Wilds is getting a crossover with Final Fantasy XIV, Chocobos included. Perhaps it will help to buoy the slump in sales for Wilds over the past few months.

The Fallout cast were ushered on stage to talk about season 2 of the show, which is headed to New Vegas this time around. But perhaps the bigger news is that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is heading to Switch 2 next year, eliciting gasps from the crowd.

Later, in another example of Microsoft’s IP crossing boundaries, it was revealed that Age of Empires IV is coming to PS5. As Rob Fahey recently commented, it’s a confusing time to be a console warrior.

We received new trailers for a whole swathe of previously announced titles, including Cronos: The New Dawn, The Outer Worlds 2, and Ghost of Yotei, which it was revealed will be receiving a Legends multiplayer mode in 2026, just like Ghost of Tsushima before it.

But the crowd was most roused by new footage from Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, which after years in development by various different studios is finally being released on October 21st this year.

Keighley took some time to enthuse about Death By Scrolling, the new game from Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert, which offers a departure from Gilbert’s point and click adventure roots by tasking the player with avoiding Death by fleeing upwards through a forced-scrolling playfield.

Eventually, nearly two hours in, and long after the show had begun to lose momentum, it was the turn of Resident Evil Requiem, a game that is clearly hotly anticipated by the audience. There were actual German whoops.

The new footage focused on terrified protagonist Grace Ashcroft fleeing violent monk-ish intruders alongside her handgun-wielding mother, but otherwise offered frustratingly few details about the new title, which is due on February 27th, 2026.

As Keighley entered into his thank yous following the trailer, it was notable that many audience members chose to get up and leave while he was speaking. But there was one more thing, he said, prompting the biggest reveal of the night.

A short CGI trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui ended the show, a sequel to Game Science’s multi-million selling Black Myth: Wukong.

Few details were provided apart from the name, but the fact that this one was saved until last just goes to show how Chinese studios are currently in the soaring ascendent.

Solana highlights 3,200 active devs, $1b+ app revenue for second straight quarter

by admin June 20, 2025

Solana’s network continues to attract strong engagement, with more than $1 billion in app revenue.

Solana (SOL)continues to see strong user engagement. On Friday, the Solana Foundation published its Solana Network Health Report, showcasing its performance in Q2 of 2025. Notably, the app revenue on the network exceeded $1 billion for the second quarter in a row.

Application revenue by chain | Source: Solana Foundation

In Q2, Solana’s app revenue rose compared to Q1—even as application revenue on other major networks declined. In fact, Solana’s app revenue now surpasses the combined total of all other blockchain networks.

This activity also contributed to a sharp rise in validator income, which reached an average quarterly level of $800 million. The peak occurred on Jan. 19, with $56.9 million earned in a single day. At the same time, validator costs have dropped dramatically.

Notably, the breakeven SOL stake required for validators to cover their costs has fallen significantly. Validators now require just 16,000 SOL to break even, down from 50,000 SOL in 2022. According to the Solana Foundation, this reflects substantial improvements in network efficiency.

Solana has also topped the charts in attracting new developers. In 2024, the network drew 7,625 developers, more than any other blockchain, including Ethereum.

Solana Foundation showcases decentralization gains

According to the Solana Foundation, the network has made significant gains in decentralization. The Nakamoto Coefficient, used to measure how decentralized a network is, reached 20 by June. This puts Solana ahead of Ethereum, Sui, and Sei, which have coefficients of 6, 18, and 7, respectively.

Solana validators are also geographically distributed, with no single country or data center controlling more than 33% of the total stake. Germany leads with 23.55%, followed by the U.S. at 17.37%, and the Netherlands at 14.36%.

AMD RX 9060 XT 16GB flies off shelves, 8GB lingers – GPU launch highlights demand split between variants

by admin June 6, 2025

It’s been a few hours since the AMD RX 9060 XT hit online shelves, and so far, the state of things across the web seems split harshly down the line of the card’s 8GB and 16GB variants. The card is widely available at MSRP in the U.S. and several European countries in both its 8GB SKUs, but 16GB stock is far harder to find than the 8GB variant, now stabilizing at around $40 over MSRP online in the United States and Europe.

The 9060 XT’s 8GB and 16GB models launched today at suggested retail prices of $299 and $349, undercutting Nvidia and finally providing an on-ramp to 1080p gaming in the current generation of GPU releases. The card has many variants from an array of board partners, and our team has had trouble finding 16GB models remain in stock for longer than two hours. That’s not a problem with the 8GB version, though; We’ve had trouble finding sites that don’t offer the 8GB at MSRP.

Newegg currently hosts the greatest number of 9060 XT models for U.S. shoppers, with the site offering many 8GB models in stock at MSRP of $299. Its 16GB models are noticeably scarcer, with several SKUs selling out during the time of writing this article, and only $389 models are currently available.

Other sites in the U.S., such as Best Buy, seems to be drip-feeding supply throughout the day. Several 8GB models are still available at MSRP on a variety of U.S. retailers, with 16GB now also popping up closer to $390.

Western European retailers have largely raised prices to €349 ($399) for the RX 9060 XT 16GB this morning, but several like Overclockers UK still offer several models at €319, matching the U.S. MSRP after the mandated VAT. Some further inland have complained about limited supply at scalper’s prices even before sales began, indicating another desert in GPU supply in Eastern Europe.

In-person retailers like MicroCenter are also reporting high stock on physical shelves at a variety of locations, and starting at the coveted $349 price tag.

For a constantly-updated look at availability trends on the 9060 XT throughout the day, be sure to refer back to our where to buy article, which will be updated as sales continue to shift throughout the week.

As many online critics suggested pre-release, the 8GB does not seem to be enticing early adopters, indicated by its availability. But if nothing else, it is nice to see a GPU still available at MSRP on its launch day in 2025.

Ripple Highlights RLUSD’s Role in Expanding $31.6 Trillion Cross-Border Payments Market

In the recent Cross-Border Payments Guide, Ripple blockchain behemoth revealed how its products – XRP and RLUSD – powering the Ripple Payments network can improve the cross-border payments system in the near future. This market is predicted to reach $50 trillion in volume within the next decade.

Payments keep the economy engine running

Ripple’s press-release reminded the community that the sphere of cross-border payments is one of the key pillars that support the global economy and allow it to develop and expand. In 2024, the document says, the payments market reached an impressive volume of $31.6 trillion

Our latest Cross-Border Payments Guide explores the nitty gritty of a payment flow, delving into what’s…

— Ripple (@Ripple) May 28, 2025

The industry of payments continues to evolve along with the changing needs, demands, and expectations of businesses, financial institutions, and retailers around the world. Once crypto emerged, the sphere of transnational payments took a new turn, enriched with various blockchain solutions.

Traditional engines that run cross-border payments include many intermediaries, such as banks, payment platforms or fintechs. They require currency conversion, regulatory checks and approvals. SWIFT is the most widely known and acknowledged system of traditional payments across borders and it requires vostro (in a domestic bank) and nostro accounts (in a foreign bank). Crypto payment provides, including Ripple, have revolutionized the payments industry, simplifying the process and making it faster and cheaper.

Ripple throws XRP and RLUSD on payments’ table

Ripple Payments intends to make a great change in the global cross-border payments industry by using XRP and introducing the RLUSD stablecoin recently. Ripple removes all intermediaries from the payments process and eliminates the vostro-nostro system, setting payments on brand new rails of blockchain.

Thanks to XRP and RLUSD, businesses get a new powerful solution, which Ripple promotes as quick, reliable, and affordable and also totally transparent – users can track down the status of their payment at any time. RLUSD was launched in December since Ripple intends to have a bite from the vast and fast-evolving markets of payments and stablecoins.

Once RLUSD was launched, it quickly scored listings with major exchanges. Over the past 24 hours, at least two new platforms have added this product – the lending app Euler Labs and Bitget crypto exchange.

Geometric Future highlights new PC cases, AIOs, and PSUs at Computex 2025

by admin May 21, 2025

The Tom’s Hardware team is on the ground at Computex 2025, and we dropped by the booth of modern and minimalist PC case manufacturer Geometric Future to check out its latest offerings. We’ve seen the company’s new premium full-tower PC case, the Model 9, which features a unique combination of aluminum, steel, and tempered glass. There’s also the new Model 3 MAX compact, designed for those looking for a smaller, more compact solution. Aside from that, there’s also the Eskimo series of AIO coolers and a new line of Power PSUs, available in both 14CM and 12CM models.

The new Model 9 PC case sits right in the middle of the Geometric Future booth, where its unique look catches the attention of anyone passing by. Instead of the usual rectangular profile we see with most cases, the Model 9 has all-rounded corners, with its tempered glass hugging the left and front panels. On the other hand, the top and right sides of the Model 9 have a full mesh cover, ensuring optimal airflow for your high-end build.

More than that, the Model 9 has enough space to accommodate one 420 mm radiator, two 360 mm radiators, a 140 mm radiator, and three 140 mm fans. That amount of cooling should be more than enough to let you push even the most advanced CPUs and GPUs to their limit without being stopped by thermal limits.

We also saw the Model 3 MAX compact, which is a mid-tower PC case. This sits between the larger Model 4 King Arthur and the smaller Model 2 The Ark, giving enthusiasts a case that doesn’t take up much space on their desks but still has enough capacity to accommodate larger components (like GPUs) and robust cooling. Aside from that, it comes in different hues, like the usual black and white, plus brighter yellow and green options, allowing you to step away from the bland colors offered by most PC case makers.

Geometric Future’s latest iterations on the Eskimo AIO cooler are on display at the booth, as well. We saw three 420mm AIO coolers — the Eskimo Ultra 40, Eskimo Pro 42W, and Eskimo Plus 42 — and the Eskimo Pro 36B. These large water-cooling solutions are perfect for helping your CPU to keep cool while keeping fan noise to a minimum. The company even has the new Noah six-in-one hub, which features three USB-A and a USB-C port, plus a 3.5 mm microphone and another 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Last, but not least, the company has two new PSU models on show — the Power 14CM and Power 12CM. These fully modular PSUs come in three different color ways, and the two sizes mean they’re designed to fit as many cases as possible. Unfortunately, we don’t have information on their capacities and efficiency ratings. So, we’ll have to wait until we can get our hands on them to see how they stack up against the best PSUs you can buy today.
