Helldivers 2’s post-death and destruction Super Earth rebuild begins, financed by more death and destruction

by admin June 23, 2025

Helldivers 2 players might have managed to stop the Illuminate from totally destroying their home planet towards the end of last month, but it still got pretty badly trashed. Enter the game’s latest mission – kick off the Super Earth rebuild by securing “reparations”.

How are those funds being secured, you ask? This is Helldivers 2, so it’s by killing a bunch more baddies.

“The monumental effort to rebuild Super Earth is underway,” confirms the order’s briefing from devs Arrowhead, “A full damage assessment has concluded, exhaustively detailing the incalculable wounds inflicted upon our sovereign homeworld — and their monetary cost, adjusted for inflation.”

In order to pay those bills, players have been ordered to secure reparations by enacting some “compulsory asset forfeiture”. Basically, they’ve got to kill 290 million Illuminate enemies and 2.9 billion bugs in just under a week.

Now, these sorts of ‘kill a big number of things’ orders have often been the most stark showcases of HD2 players’ terrifying abilities when it comes to getting stuff done over the past year and a bit. Since they end as soon as the targets are reached, a number of them – especially those that target the squishable Terminid swarms – have ended early.

MAJOR ORDER: The monumental effort to rebuild Super Earth is underway.

This time, though, the sheer size of the bug kill total does look to be presenting a tough challenge thus far. As of writing, the game’s unofficial Galactic War tracking apps say 223,303,766 Terminids have been terminated, putting the divers on track to overshoot the deadline of three days or so they’ve got. On the other hand, things are going great with the Illuminate, with players 41.3% of the way to their goal and looking set to hit it tomorrow.

Looking at Reddit, there might be a bit of fatigue regarding Illuminate major orders setting in at the moment, with some players wishing they’d been sent after the Automatons instead for this mission.

Outside of that live-service grind psychological insight, the interesting thing about this latest mission to me is that, assuming Super Earth does eventually get rebuilt, one would assume another battle for it might be in the cards down the line. It’ll probably be a ways away, but I’d be intrigued to see how Arrowhead would go about trying to outdo the first big battle for the planet.

I’d think it’d maybe have to involve a new faction folks have spent less time fighting than the three in the game right now, and some sort of twist on the sequence of fights to hold different mega cities that we got first time around.

Anyway, I’ll stop speculating before I get to the point oftrying to guess what the second battle for Super Earth’s commemorative cape might look like.

Helldivers 2, Spider-Man 2, and more PlayStation titles have been freed from their region lock prison on PC

by admin June 15, 2025

Sony have been making a lot of mistakes over the past couple of years, including things like mistakenly thinking they could release 12 live service games by 2026, but the more immediately annoying one is its whole PSN thing. I probably don’t need to remind you of that whole Helldivers 2 fiasco, where they tried to make logging into a PSN a requirement for those on PC and later scrapped this because it went down horrendously. However, there has been one other snag that came with all this PSN nonsense: region locking.

Despite being able to play Helldivers 2 without a PSN account, it was still unavailable in almost 180 countries, all of which you can’t make a PSN account in (it’s still possible to play the game with an account connected, which will likely have factored into the reasoning behind region locking the game). This has applied to Sony’s other PC ports of their PlayStation published games, except now, as shared by deals wizard Wario64, it seems a handful of them are now (mostly) region lock free.

Sony appears to be removing regional restrictions on their Steam/PC games

There are four total, including the aforementioned Helldivers 2, as well as God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and Spider-Man 2. Worth keeping in mind that these are all games that had their PSN requirements lifted earlier this year. From what I can tell there haven’t been any changes made to other PlayStation games based on their logs on SteamDB, but I’m also not entirely sure which games were and weren’t region locked, so your mileage may vary with their wider portfolio.

It’s a good move forward at least! Certainly seems like PlayStation are just shooting themselves in the foot by limiting where their games can actually be bought. Now the big question is whether or not their next big game (that isn’t Marathon) on PC will have a PSN requirement at all.

Helldivers 2 just rolled out mega city battles against the Terminids, kicking off an “unprecedented assault” of bug fascism

by admin June 10, 2025

Helldivers 2 developers Arrowhead have unleashed the latest twist in the game’s Galactic War, with urban battles against the Terminids now on the cards. Rather than defending cities on Super Earth, this time the task is swatting bug invasions of population centres across multiple planets.

A tough assignment, but to be fair, successfully protecting their home planet against the still-at-large Illuminate should have given players plenty experience of street fighting (not the Ryu and Chun-Li kind).

“Massive Terminid outbreaks erupted simultaneously across multiple Super Earth cities,” reads the latest briefing from developers Arrowhead, “This unprecedented assault of Fascism into highly-populated areas puts millions of citizens in grave danger. The Helldivers must respond immediately.”

The order, which dropped not long after the game’s latest patch, is shipping players off to five planets with cities that are being overrun by the bugs. Fighting’s already started on Crucible and Alta V, with Volterra, Caramoor, and Inari also on the list of worlds the divers need to hold onto until the end of this order to secure a victory.

MAJOR ORDER: The remnant Illuminate forces have evaded Justice. Some of their remote bases endure. The unprovoked Illuminate assault on Super Earth will never be forgotten. Justice for the Illuminate atrocities has not been averted—merely postponed, for a greater and more… pic.twitter.com/WY24mVg21y

It’s news that, while obviously terrible from a lore perspective, will no doubt be music to the ears of Helldivers 2 players that prefer squashing the bugs over battling the game’s other enemy factions. This group, referred to in the HD2 community as “bugdivers”, have caught some flak from their fellow soldiers in the past for not lending enough of a hand during non-Terminid MOs. At least this one should put that minor bickering to bed for a little while.

It’s also worth noting the result of the last mission if you’re returning to the game to fight these bugs following a bit of a post-battle for Super Earth break. Remnants of the Illuminate, supposedly reeling from that failed invasion, were the target and proved too tough for the divers to overcome.

Unsurprisingly given wiping the faction out totally would leave the game with just its two oldest foes, the squids were hiding more in reserve than it first seemed, so they’re still kiciing around on remote bases across the galaxy.

It’ll be interesting to see how the usual bug swarm battles translate to the urban biomes, but this certainly explains why this morning’s HD2 patch reworked stealth detection around Terminid spawners and places that kick out flying enemies.

Ubisoft, Roblox, Riot, and now Helldivers: Tencent just acquired a 15% stake in Arrowhead games

by admin June 6, 2025

Tencent has acquired a 15.75 percent stake in Arrowhead Games – the development studio behind Helldivers 2 – for $80m.

Tencent has previously founded or acquired shares in a variety of video game companies, including a new gaming venture with Ubisoft Games, total ownership of Riot Games, a major ownership position for 10 Chamber, and its own publishing arm Level Infinite.

Speaking to DI, founder John Pilestedt stated that bringing Tencent in as partial owners “opens up opportunities for China as a market. Gaining access to the Chinese player base is the holy grail in the gaming industry.”

Helldivers 2 just got a new Warbond yesterday too! Check it out!Watch on YouTube

The remaining 84.25 percent of shares are owned by Arrowhead founders Johan Pilestedt, Emil Englund, Malin Hedstrom, Peter Lindgren, and Anton Stenmark.

A recent financial report reviewed by DI stated Arrowhead had a turnover of 959m SEK, which is around £73,736,551 / $99,877,484.85 / €87,516,806.33, and an operating profit of 729m SEK which is £56,052,445.50 / $75,911,192.99 / €66,526,965.99. That’s a lot of cash!

Not too much of a surprise, considering Helldivers 2 was PlayStation’s fastest selling game ever. The game had recently found itself the stage for an invasion of Super Earth itself which revitalised the game’s player base to its highest point since that period of intense launch hype.

All the while Arrowhead bosses remain supportive of the pursuit of new and interesting ideas rather than trend chasing, with Pilestadt stating at GDC that the industry is doomed to “unnecessary layoffs” by “chasing after the battle royales”.

Helldivers 2 follows up the battle for Super Earth with fresh Automaton fighting, because naturally the bots were just waiting in a big invasion queue

by admin June 4, 2025

Following the recently-concluded invasion of Super Earth, Helldivers 2 developers Arrowhead have decided to keep on chugging with the invasions. Yep, in the most Helldivers 2 development ever to hit Helldivers 2, an Illuminate invasion has given way to an Automaton invasion.

The game’s Galactic War is a genuine forever war, and I continue to enjoy watching Arrowhead find new ways to kick its community of bed and shout ‘come on, you’ve got new things to do’.

“Distress calls have been raised from multiple planets,” the studio wrote in its briefing for the first major order to drop since players won the battle for their home planet, “Automaton invasion ships have landed, disrupting ongoing merriment and sanctioned frivolity in the wake of our great victory. The enemy has been evidently waiting for the outcome of the assault, poised to strike while our forces are weakened by the Illuminate invasion.”

Classic Tom and Jerry tactics from the bots there, waiting just out of sight with big metallic grins and frying pans at the ready to try and whack the unsuspecting Helldivers on the head. From a practical perspective, the order’s tasked players with fending off five Automation invasions of different planets before time runs out.

As of writing, two have already been seen off, with just over two days left to run on the order. The fiercest fighting right now looks to be on the moon dubbed Zosma, with around 31,000 players on its surface trying to fend off an invasion force coming from Zzaniah Prime. Lots of Zs, basically.

We’ll see how this order plays out, but so far it doesn’t look like the Helldiver hangover that win on Super Earth probably led to is inhibiting their ability to shoot stuff.

Seriously, some of the Helldivers 2 hardcores on Reddit aren’t even moaning too much about being back fighting one of the original two factions – the other being the Terminids – that they’ve spent countless hours battling in various guises and forms over the year and a bit the game’s been out. Cool what a big win can do for morale, eh?

Helldivers 2’s battle for Super Earth makes Chinese news following the successful and slightly review bomby defense of Equality-On-Sea

by admin June 3, 2025

The battle for Super Earth that kicked off with Helldivers 2’s Heart of Democracy update concluded last week, with players managing to fend off an Illuminate invasion of their home planet. One of the two cities that ended up holding out against the hostile squids was Equality-On-Sea, located in the in-game map’s version of China, and it’s led the shooter to make a local news report in the country.

As spotted by players on the Helldivers 2 subreddit, following the big victory for Super Earth, Chinese broadcaster Kanka News’s Good Morning Shanghai anchors fronted a short segment about these recent developments in the game. Based on a translation by a Reddit user with the handle AtypicalGameMaker (whose profile asserts that they’re a Chinese game developer), the report discussed the defense of Equality-On-Sea, hailing both Chinese and non-Chinese players for working together to protect the city.

For some context, Equality-On-Sea and the Super Earth capital of Prosperity City were the only Super Earth cities left standing after the invasion. The defense of the former caused a bit of controversy, with a relatively small number of players review bombing Helldivers 2 because they couldn’t push the city’s defense percentage gauge up to 100%, meaning it’d be fully under their control.

Members of the game’s community suggested the root of this was that Equality-On-Sea was located in-game where Shanghai is in the real world, leading Chinese players to take its defense very seriously. An alleged translation mixup with the Chinese language version of the game seemingly also convinced these players that they could totally liberate the city while the battle for Super Earth was still in progress.

That last bit wasn’t actually the case, with the constant flow of fresh Illuminate troops while the invasion was ongoing making it impossible to fully secure any mega cities at that stage of proceedings. Cue players getting frustrated as they believed their in-game efforts weren’t having a dynamic effect on how the war was playing out, and some accusing developer Arrowhead of railroading them into certain outcomes.

The translation alludes to this apparent misunderstanding, citing the news anchors as having praised Helldivers 2 players for not following Arrowhead’s Galactic War “script” and instead having “fought for their own story in an honorable way.”

Meanwhile, I quite like the way the report looks to have described the final stages of the big fight for Super Earth playing out: “Chinese players were battling the enemies during the daytime using their excellent shooting skills and strategic plans,” the anchors allegedly said, “American players took over the nighttime operations, utilizing air drops and firepower to construct the defense line for Shanghai.

“This great unity of Chinese and American netizens came to a happy ending on the 30th.” Nice.

Helldivers 2 Players Score Biggest Victory Yet But At What Cost

by admin June 1, 2025

Image: Arrowhead Game Studios

“The President of Super Earth has been killed in action by the Illuminate during the fall of Prosperity City.” That was the message that greeted Helldivers 2 players when they logged on last night in one last bid to repel their invading squid-like foes. Some truthers think the hit was inside job. When the dust settled Friday morning, the battle to save Super Earth was over and players had succeeded in winning the extraction shooter’s biggest showdown since it launched. Pus they got a new battle station to celebrate.

The Week In Games: Co-Op Bug Blasting And More New Releases

“The devastation wrought upon our home is immense,” read the latest in-game dispatch from Arrowhead Game Studios. “Only two Mega Cities remain standing: Prosperity City and Equality-on-Sea. The remainder have been vacated by the enemy, having suffered catastrophic damage at their hands.” New Major Orders are still pending, but in the meantime players get to vote on where to move the new DSS battle station that aided in the fight, and that provides extra military bonuses to Helldivers fighting on whatever planet it orbits.

For anyone who missed the last two weeks, a brief series of entries on the Galactic Map recaps the events from the Illuminate’s arrival and torching of Mars and other planets, all the way through players’ epic last stand to protect Equality-on-Sea (Helldivers’ version of Shanghai). A lot of creative military tactics were improvised and deployed to take down the massive invading Leviathan ships, and a wave of negative Steam reviews, purportedly from Chinese players angry, due to a potential mistranslation, about why they couldn’t seem to fully liberate Equality-on-Sea, appears to have subsided.

What happens next is anyone’s guess. Arrowhead Game Studios might take some time before kicking off whatever it has planned to let players catch their breath. Maybe the development team is lining up a revenge campaign, or maybe there’s still another shoe to drop and Super Earth isn’t quite in the clear after all. A new president? In this economy? Maybe they’re just an Illuminate plant after all, ready to control Super Earth from within. The beauty of Helldivers 2‘s fascist space satire is that nothing is ever quite out of the question.

May kicked off one of Helldivers 2‘s biggest balance patches and content updates in some time, including a new Warbond battle pass with additional melee weapons and the ability to level up and customize most of the shooter’s guns. I wouldn’t bet on any other big updates anytime soon. That said, Summer Game Fest is just around the corner and Arrowhead used host Geoff Keighley’s last big gaming showcase to announce the addition of the Illuminate to the fray. Who knows what’s in store for the second half of Helldivers 2‘s second year?

Wahey, Helldivers 2 players have seen off the squids and saved Super Earth (for now), cue an over 500 comment-long train of salutes that’s still growing

It’s over. Well, for about ten minutes. Helldivers 2’s battle for Super Earth has ended, with the Helldivers emerging from the siege victorious and seeing off the Illuminate. For now.

Forget about that whole apparent translation mixup that led to some review bombing, or the fun little bugs you might have had to overcome as well as the squids, it’s time to crack open the Super bubbly and I dunno…recite a poem about Super Earth being the best in a totally non-totalitarian fashion whatsoever.

The final battle concluded with two of the seven mega cities players on Super Earth had been going all-out to defend – Equality-On-Sea and Prosperity City – triumphantly left standing.

“The Illuminate have retreated from Super Earth battlespace,” Arrowhead wrote in its briefing about the victory, The Heart of Democracy has been defended. The Battle of Super Earth is won.” It added that “Across the Federation, approval for impromptu celebrations in the streets has been issued. C-01 permits approval allowances have been quintupled, though processing delays may occur following the loss of ADMINCEN 02.”

Regarding the defeated foe, the briefing continues: “Remaining Illuminate forces were last observed making FTL jumps from Super Earth orbit. The enemy has also vacated New Haven, Pilen V, and Widow’s Harbor, burning the surface of those planets as they fled. No stations detect Illuminate forces—the enemy has gone into hiding. They will be found.”

So, there’s your little seed of where the war might be going next, assuming another foe doesn’t put itself in the crosshairs by shambling over the divers like a drunk lad in a pub/bar and angrily demanding a scrap.

Until then, though it’s time for celebration, with the game’s subreddit now being littered with thread after thread of divers partying or just wondering what to do next, including one that’s one big Super Earth salute GIF train and currently sits at over 550 comments and is still growing by the minute. How big will it get? Oops, that sounds a bit funny now that I’ve written it.

How are you celebrating this big win in the battle for Super Earth, and where do you want Helldivers 2’s Galactic War to go or do next? Let us know below!

With the Illuminate now on the verge of defeat, Helldivers 2 was just hit with a fresh barrage of Steam review bombing apparently rooted in a Galactic War comms mix-up

by admin May 30, 2025

Helldivers 2 has been hit with a fresh burst of negative reviews on Steam over the past couple of days, and it looks like the reason for this uptick is rooted in an alleged Galactic War messaging mix-up involving Chinese players keen to defeat the Illuminate.

The good news is that the squids may soon suffer that exact fate, with the battle for Super Earth now in the final stage of its final stage. Though, it has taken Super Earth’s president getting killed in action to get us to that point.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

Taking a look at Steam, HD2 has clocked up just under 3500 negative reviews across May 29 and May 30 so far, as opposed to 1514 positive ones. It’s a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the mass of over 220,000 negative reviews that came with last May’s PSN account linking controversy, but still noticeable.

A glance through these recent thumbs downs reveals that a good portion of them are rooted in unhappiness about recent bugs like the stratagem input one. Though, there are also a bunch that cite the percentage “99.9783%” and express frustration at Arrowhead over a recent development in the the Galactic War.

What’s happened looks to be this: with only two mega cities left to defend from the Illuminate invasion – Equality-On-Sea (located in China on Helldivers 2’s in-game map) and Prosperity City (Super Earth’s capital, placed in Sweden, home of developer Arrowhead) – there was a big effort put in by players, especially those in China, to hold on to the former.

Their efforts meant the Helldivers’ hold on the city got to 99.9783%, but because the Illuminate are still invading en-masse in a manner the divers couldn’t put a full stop to at that point because the current order was still ongoing, there was nothing they could do to make Equality-On-Sea 100% theirs.

According to an alleged “level 150 Chinese Helldiver veteran” with the Reddit username Valkyrie_Yukikaze (thanks, GamesRadar), this lead to frustration among Chinese players, which they claim to have not been helped by the game’s Chinese translation apparently explaining defense percentages in a way that “makes it [seem] like that the city can be completely taken back from the invasion”.

Cue anger, coupled with conspiracy theories about Arrowhead and its game master J.O.E.L railroading players into specific outcomes or plot twists in the war, rather than rewarding them for their efforts and reacting dynamically to them. How you feel about that comes down to what you think the job of a D&D-style dungeon master is, but there are plenty of examples of Arrowhead embracing stuff players have done out of the blue in the past – hello mines people decided to save children over.

Anyway, here’s hoping everyone can chill out and come together for the climax of this pivotal major order. While Super Earth’s president has been killed in action overnight, Arrowhead’s latest news briefing says that the squids are “taking heavy losses” that could soon result in them being “forced to abandon the assault” of Super Earth. That’s assuming the divers can keep on holding out, so here’s hoping they stay strong.

Only two cities are still standing in Helldivers 2’s battle for Super Earth, and Arrowhead’s kicked off an extra mission that might heal the player base’s biggest divide

by admin May 29, 2025

The last stage of Helldivers 2’s battle for Super Earth is coming down to the wire, as we all expected, wth just two of the planet’s seven mega cities still holding out against The Illuminate. Cue another extra major order to help the major order, and one that’ll cater to the folks who’ve spent the whole squid invasion half a galaxy away.

This comes after the divers successfully managed to get the Democracy Space Station in place by junking a bunch of Automatons while simultaneously fighting to defend those cities, with this key bit of the Galactic War really putting their murder-based multitasking skills to the test.

Now, with Port Mercy and York Supreme having fallen during the early stages of this final phase, only Prosperity City and the wonderfully-named Equality-On-Sea are standing in the way of Super Earth being totally razed of major population centres.

Cue another 24 hour-long mini-mission as the defense of those remaining cities continues, with Arrowhead tasking the divers to defend the planet of Fort Union from an attack by the Terminids, so that its long-range satellites can be used to transmit “malware capable of disabling Illuminate technology” at the squid invasion force, further damaging it and helping save Super Earth.

Given the long-standing feud within Helldivers 2’s player base between folks who always go and fight whichever enemy the current major order and the “bugdivers” who prefer only to battle the Terminids since they find it most fun – something that’s continued to ruffle feathers as the former faction has tried to get everyone to pitch in with this battle for Super Earth has progressed – you’ll not be surprised by the Reddit reaction to the Fort Union “strategic opportunity”.

A whole bunch of posts from major order followers telling the bugdivers that now is their time to shine and do something that’ll help keep Super Earth safe. On the one hand, you can understand their frustration given every extra hand helps – at least in theory – the Helldivers earn victory in these big missions, but on the other, badgering people for not playing a game the way you do isn’t cool.

Hey, maybe if the Fort Union defense is pulled off and The Illuminate are defeated shortly afterwards, this divide among players will be healed forever, as the order followers are forced to acknowledge the role their bug-swatting brethren played in everyone’s home planet being saved. Ok, so such a peace would probably only last five minutes before people started shouting at each other again, but we can dream.

The Terminids aren’t the only bugs Helldivers 2 players have been battling recently – as of writing, Arrowhead’s still working on a fix for a strategem input glitch.
