‘I’m sick of it’: James Gunn explains why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is no longer the DC comic book movie’s name

by admin June 16, 2025

  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been given a much cleaner and shorter title
  • DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has confirmed the name change
  • The superhero movie will be released in theaters worldwide in June 2026

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is no longer the official name of the forthcoming DC comic book movie, James Gunn has revealed.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the DC Studios co-chief confirmed the Milly Alcock-starring film will now go by a much shorter title: Supergirl.

The surprise announcement came right at the start of Rolling Stone’s profile piece on Gunn, which was conducted as part of the promotional campaign for the writer/director’s upcoming Superman film. Asked by the interviewer if he could clarify what Woman of Tomorrow is being referred to as these days, Gunn paused before saying: “I think it’s just called Supergirl.”

Elaborating on the title change, Gunn used Superman’s next big-screen outing, which was originally called Superman: Legacy, to explain why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘s name had been shortened.

“I’m always cutting [down project titles],” Gunn replied. “Legacy was really – we [DC Studios] do something called a premortem. A premortem is you get together with your group that’s doing the project. It’s usually about a couple months before shooting… [and] one of the things I brought up was, it [Gunn’s Superman movie] was [originally] called Superman: Legacy.

“Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure,” Gunn continued. “First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing. Also, it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward, even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it.'”

Woman of Tomorrow, but a title for today

It might pain some DC comic book fans to learn about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘s new, truncated titled. After all, the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) movie is basically adapting its eight-issue graphic novel namesake, which was created by comic book writer Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Eveley.

Nevertheless, in my view, renaming the DCU Chapter One film is the right decision. Supergirl has a much cleaner feel to it. Additionally, for non-DC comic devotees who don’t already know it’ll retell one of Kara Zor-El’s best stories in a live-action format, its new title maintains an air of mystery about what its plot will actually entail.

Then there’s the fact that, unlike more iconic DC heroes including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, there’s only been one other Supergirl movie: 1984’s Supergirl, which starred Helen Slater and is available to stream on Max. So the prospect of confusing viewers with an identically titled flick over 40 years on from the Maiden of Might’s silver screen debut shouldn’t be of major concern.

All in all, I’m pretty happy that Supergirl has dropped its subtitle. It certainly rolls off the tongue better than its previous moniker, but its title change does mean I’ll need to give my Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow guide a major overhaul. Lucky me, eh?

Supergirl will take flight in theaters worldwide on June 26, 2026.

New Wonder Woman movie is on the way, James Gunn confirms, and DC fans say there’s a clear frontrunner for the role

by admin June 11, 2025

  • James Gunn has confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is in the works
  • The DCU Chapter One film is “being written right now”, Gunn says
  • DC fans have drawn up a wish-list of actors they want to play Diana Prince

Diana Prince is coming to the DC Universe (DCU) earlier than anyone expected after James Gunn confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is in development.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly (EW), the co-chief of DC Studios surprisingly revealed that a Wonder Woman film is not only “being written right now”, but also being worked on separately to Paradise Lost.

The latter is a Max TV show that would be a Game of Thrones-inspired project based on Themyscira, aka the idyllic, all-female island nation Diana Prince hails from. Paradise Lost was announced as part of the DCU Chapter One lineup in January 2023, but, as Gunn also told EW, progress is moving slowly on this series’ development.

A Wonder Woman movie announcement isn’t a shock in itself – after all, the Amazonian is a member of DC Comics’ iconic Trinity of superheroes. If you weren’t aware, the others are Superman and Batman.

Still, considering that Paradise Lost was meant to act as a precursor to Wonder Woman’s eventual arrival in the DCU, I don’t think anyone predicted that Gunn would confirm a Diana Prince-led project is already being worked on. I say that after Gunn sparked excitement over Wonder Woman’s DCU debut less than a month ago (at the time of publication, anyway), too.

Which actor do fans want to play Wonder Woman in the DCU?

It’ll be a few years before Wonder Woman returns on the big screen. We don’t actually know how much work has been completed on its screenplay, nor do we have any idea about which actor will follow in the footsteps of Gal Gadot and Lynda Carter, who’ve previously played Diana Prince in a live-action capacity.

For his part, Gunn told EW he and fellow DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran haven’t opened the casting call yet. That hasn’t stopped DC devotees from drawing up a shortlist of actors they’d like to see tackle the role. Indeed, threads on the DC Cinematic and DCU Leaks Reddit pages, as well as one on ResetEra, are full of suggestions from comic-book fans and casual observers alike.

Lots of great options are being proposed, too. Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown, Fubar), May Calamawy (Moon Knight), Charlee Fraser (Anyone But You, Furiosa), Melissanthi Mahut (The Sandman), and Elizabeth Dulau (Andor) have all been fan-cast since the news broke.

However, it’s another Star Wars alumnus – one who joined Dulau on Andor‘s cast roster – who’s the clear favorite among many DC fans: Adria Arjona.

I could see that happening. I think any of the aforementioned actors would be a good fit to play Diana Prince, but Arjona would certainly be my top pick to assume the role of one of DC Comics’ most popular heroes.

She’s shown she has the capabilities to play such a multidimensional character in numerous projects, including Andor, Hit Man, Blink Twice, and Good Omens. Make it so, Messrs Gunn and Safran, and I’m sure you’ll make plenty of people happy.

James Gunn confirms DC is working on a new Wonder Woman movie

by admin June 11, 2025

DC Studios head James Gunn has revealed several key things about the future of its cinematic universe, including confirmation that a Wonder Woman movie is currently in development.

James Gunn clarified to Entertainment Weekly that Wonder Woman is “a separate thing” from the upcoming HBO series Paradise Island, which centers on the Amazons of Themyscira. While he acknowledged the series is “slow moving, but it’s moving,” he also shared an update: “We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is being written right now.”

Diana of Themyscira has had a rough go of it in recent memory, following the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 led by the previous team of Gal Gadot and Patty Jenkins. Speaking in 2022 about the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins said, “I was open to considering anything asked of me. From my understanding, there was nothing I could do to move things forward at that time. DC is clearly undergoing major changes, so I understand that these decisions are difficult right now.” Warner Bros. Games recently shut down three of its studios and canceled all projects in development, including the long-anticipated Wonder Woman game.

James also explained that although an actor has yet to be cast for the role, Batman, Superman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are important figures for the future of DC Studios. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two.”

Of Course, James Gunn Is Thinking About a ‘Justice League’ Movie

by admin June 10, 2025

Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, Peacemaker, Clayface—the list of characters 100% confirmed for James Gunn’s new DC Universe is already fairly robust. Eventually, names like Batman and Wonder Woman will join too and, in a world where superhero team-up movies are both expected and demanded, Gunn admitted that the Justice League is probably on the horizon.

“Of course, of course,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly when asked if the Justice League was something he’d been thinking about. “But there is no Justice League in this world… not yet.”

“Not yet” implies that the movies coming now, and later, could be building to that—and when asked if the Justice League plays a role in what Gunn has planned for the overall DC Universe story, he simply replied, “Sure.”

Basically, a lot of things have to happen before we get to see the James Gunn-Peter Safran version of the Justice League. First is the release of Superman on July 11. If that’s not a hit, well, all bets are off. But assuming it is, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow would be next in 2026, with Batman and Wonder Woman projects announced over two years ago both still in development.

Gunn confirmed to EW that a Wonder Woman movie is “being written right now,” while the previously announced show about Themyscira is “slow moving, but it’s moving.” No updates on Gunn’s version of Batman but the Matt Reeves’ Batman Part II starring Robert Pattinson is still full steam ahead for a 2027 release. “What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary,” Gunn said. “We’re supposed to see that script shortly, and I can’t wait.”

Gunn was also asked about what’s next for him and Superman. The writer-director admitted earlier this year that his next film is something he was already in the process of writing. However, he would neither confirm nor deny that the film was a sequel or included Superman. In this new interview, he had an intriguing answer when asked if he had begun thinking about a Superman sequel. “What I’m working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”

While all of this is going around in Gunn’s mind, one place it’s not is in star David Corenswet’s. When asked about potentially leading a Justice League movie, Superman himself said he’s choosing not to think about it. “I mean, that sounds awesome,” he said. “I don’t take it upon myself to think ahead in that kind of way, just because one would hate to get one’s hopes up about anything in particular and then have it go in another direction. What I like to do is stay blissfully ignorant, and then when James tells me what’s going to happen, I get to have a wonderful surprise. So if Justice League is in the back of his mind, that sounds great to me. I’ll put it at the back of my mind and we’ll see what happens.”

Read more from Gunn and the team over at Entertainment Weekly. Superman opens July 11 and we’ll have much more soon.
