‘Wall-E With a Gun’: Midjourney Generates Videos of Disney Characters Amid Massive Copyright Lawsuit

by admin June 20, 2025

Midjourney’s new AI-generated video tool will produce animated clips featuring copyrighted characters from Disney and Universal, WIRED has found—including video of the beloved Pixar character Wall-E holding a gun.

It’s been a busy month for Midjourney. This week, the generative AI startup released its sophisticated new video tool, V1, which lets users make short animated clips from images they generate or upload. The current version of Midjourney’s AI video tool requires an image as a starting point; generating videos using text-only prompts is not supported.

The release of V1 comes on the heels of a very different kind of announcement earlier in June: Hollywood behemoths Disney and Universal filed a blockbuster lawsuit against Midjourney, alleging that it violates copyright law by generating images with the studios’ intellectual property.

Midjourney did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Disney and Universal reiterated statements made by its executives about the lawsuit, including Disney’s legal head Horacio Gutierrez alleging that Midjourney’s output amounts to “piracy.”

It appears that Midjourney may have attempted to put up some video-specific guardrails for V1. In our testing, it blocked animations from prompts based on Frozen’s Elsa, Boss Baby, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse, although it would still generate images of these characters. When WIRED asked V1 to animate images of Elsa, an “AI moderator” blocked the prompt from generating videos. “Al Moderation is cautious with realistic videos, especially of people,” read the pop-up message.

These limitations, which appear to be guardrails, are incomplete. WIRED testing shows that V1 will generate animated clips of a wide variety of Universal and Disney characters, including Homer Simpson, Shrek, Minions, Deadpool, and Star Wars’ C-3PO and Darth Vader. For example, when asked for an image of Minions eating a banana, Midjourney generated four outputs with recognizable versions of the cute, yellow characters. Then, when WIRED clicked the “Animate” button on one of the outputs, Midjourney generated a follow-up video with the characters eating a banana—peel and all.

Although Midjourney seems to have blocked some Disney- and Universal-related prompts for videos, WIRED could sometimes circumvent the potential guardrails during tests by using spelling variations or repeating the prompt. Midjourney also lets users provide a prompt to inform the animation; using that feature, WIRED was able to to generate clips of copyrighted characters behaving in adult ways, like Wall-E brandishing a firearm and Yoda smoking a joint.

The Disney and Universal lawsuit poses a major threat to Midjourney, which also faces additional legal challenges from visual artists who allege copyright infringement as well. Although it focused largely on providing examples from Midjourney’s image-generation tools, the complaint alleges that video would “only enhance Midjourney ability to distribute infringing copies, reproductions, and derivatives of Plaintiffs’ Copyrighted Works.”

The complaint includes dozens of alleged Midjourney images showing Universal and Disney characters. The set was initially produced as part of a report on Midjourney’s so-called “visual plagiarism problem” from AI critic and cognitive scientist Gary Marcus and visual artist Reid Southen.

“Reid and I pointed out this problem 18 months ago, and there’s been very little progress and very little change,” says Marcus. “We still have the same situation of unlicensed materials being used, and guardrails that work a little bit but not very well. For all the talk about exponential progress in AI, what we’re getting is better graphics, not a fundamental-principle solution to this problem.”

Have fun failing to reload your gun fast enough in this cornfield creepfest

by admin June 20, 2025

Indie horror game developer Ruled are onto a nice little spree with their shortform Itch.io releases – seemingly, they are skipping from phobia to phobia. First there was Automatonophobia, a game that navigated the fear of subterranean golems, then there was Chrometophobia, a game dedicated to the fear of spending money, and also to the act of finding “grimbo” gibs for a delicious pie. What’s next on the menu? Ah yes, scarecrows.

In Formidophobia, which can be downloaded for free, you are a farmer trying to make it across a hazy lofi cornfield. Your dad told you never to go in that field. His dad told him never to go in that field. Neither of them are around anymore, however, and your wife needs medical attention, so off you trot with your bolt-action rifle and exactly one shell. With luck, you’ll find more shells along the way.

The rifle is a stubborn, slothful broomhandle of a weapon that wobbles drunkenly at stomach level and often gets caught on other objects, dragging behind you in a way that makes me empathise for the weary arms of my character. The principal challenge and source of dread in Formidophobia is reloading it in a punctual fashion.

The starting area is a ring of scrawly signposts that illustrate the process of pulling back the lever, tugging a shell from the holder, and closing the gun up again. The utility of those signposts isn’t that they tell you how to wield your gun, in my experience – it’s that other things can’t walk through them.

I enjoy the grubbiness, stodginess and overall inhospitability of this game. Don’t come expecting “polish”, do come expecting a briskly unpleasant meditation on the rasp of stems and the crickle-crackle of bones, deep in the mist.

This New Call Of Duty Gun Has A Must-See Weapon-Inspection Animation

by admin May 30, 2025

Season 4 is live in Black Ops 6 and Warzone, bringing a new battle pass and plenty of content to Call of Duty. Not all of the seasonal content has arrived yet, but dataminers are already showing off new bundles planned for the in-game shop, including this upcoming weapon blueprint with a must-see weapon inspection.

As leaked by Thund3r, the “Combo Bash” Mastercraft weapon blueprint for Season 4’s new FFAR1 assault rifle has a highly detailed weapon-inspection animation. The Combo Bash blueprint can be seen in the post below, which reveals a colorful, cel-shaded variant of the FFAR1 with an entire arcade fight scene taking place during the weapon inspection.

This isn’t the first time Call of Duty has featured such a wild and detailed weapon inspection, but these over-the-top animations are usually reserved for the weapon blueprints found in Call of Duty Mobile. One of the most notable gun animations from the mobile version is a mythic weapon blueprint with a gun inspection that includes an entire WW2 cinematic experience.

Those looking to score Black Ops 6’s Combo Bash weapon blueprint will need to wait until Season 4’s “Tracer Pack: Arcade Champ Mastercraft” bundle hits the shop. Activision has not released the date or price for the pack, but this is part of an arcade-themed bundle with an operator skin for Toro as well as additional cosmetics.

Season 4’s battle pass adds the new FFAR1 assault rifle and LC10 submachine gun, but more weapons will arrive in Season 4 Reloaded. Make sure to check out the Season 4 patch notes to see everything that changed in Black Ops 6 and Warzone.

Why 3D-Printing an Untraceable Ghost Gun Is Easier Than Ever

by admin May 22, 2025

If you 3D-print a frame of a Glock-style pistol, then you can buy the rest of the parts off the internet and assemble it, and you have a gun that is a ghost gun. An anonymous, fully private, lethal weapon.

Zoë Schiffer: When we get back, we’ll get into the details of how Andy actually made and assembled the ghost gun. But for now, we have to go to break.

[break]

Zoë Schiffer:Welcome back to Uncanny Valley. Okay, Andy, I want to get into the gun assembly process. Talk to me about the point from printing, to ordering the parts, to actually putting it together.

Andy Greenberg: The printing is definitely the easiest part in 2025. You really can download these files, these CAD files for gun frames from a bunch of different open source websites run by basically opponents of gun control. Then put them into some software and click print, and 13 hours later, in this case I had two perfect Glock-style frames. It was really remarkable how powerful the 3D printer, and cheap it was, that I was using.

The assembly is a lot trickier. That is as hard as ever. It’s like assembling a very small piece of Ikea furniture. There’s a lot of hammering little pins into place, and assembling the trigger mechanism, and it all has to fit into this small cavity inside of the frame. It took me more than an hour to do, and I was being guided in this process by a 3D-printed-gun aficionado. He calls himself Print, Shoot, Repeat, who was really helpful and patient about it. But I think that for people who know what they’re doing, this takes 15 or 20 minutes—

Zoë Schiffer: Wow.

Andy Greenberg: —to assemble, once you have some practice at it.

Zoë Schiffer: OK. Then you shot the gun. What happened? How were you feeling at that moment at the gun range?

Andy Greenberg: Well, before I even shot it, there is this incredible moment when you’re building a gun. It feels like this interesting, a little technical process, like making a model airplane or something. Then all of a sudden, I’m getting this slide onto the frame and then it clicks into place. Then you see for the first time that you actually have a gun in your hands, that it’s a lethal weapon. The way that you have to treat a gun in your hands is so different from a collection of gun parts. Suddenly, it’s this lethal weapon, you have to be careful where you point it. It’s a really dramatic moment. It was for me, anyway.

Zoë Schiffer: There was that final part in the assembly where you put on a silencer, like allegedly Luigi Mangione had on his gun, right?

Andy Greenberg: Right. Luigi Mangione, in his backpack allegedly had a 3D-printed silencer too, which is a very new phenomenon, even in the 3D-printed gun world. We built that too. We 3D-printed a silencer. That actually is one part that’s different. It’s a felony for me to 3D-print a suppressor, a silencer as it’s known. We did have an actual licensed gunsmith, the owner of the range that we were about to test that, who pushed print in that case and helped us to build that silencer. When Luigi Mangione allegedly did that, he would have been breaking the law. I would have been too, if not for having a gunsmith on-hand to help us out.
