Alleged NYC Bitcoin Kidnappers Plead Not Guilty, Claim Accuser Was ‘Laughing and Smiling’

by admin June 12, 2025

In brief

  • Two men alleged to have kidnapped and tortured a man for his crypto pleaded not guilty in NYC on Wednesday.
  • The pair’s lawyers allege the accuser was free to move about on days he was allegedly captured.
  • The case is the latest in a string of high-profile crypto “wrench attacks” this year.

Two men alleged to have kidnapped and tortured a man for access to his Bitcoin pleaded not guilty on Wednesday, with their respective lawyers saying the accuser could move freely throughout New York on the days he was allegedly held captive.

Lawyers for William Duplessie and John Woeltz said the unidentified accuser can be seen in videos “laughing and smiling,” and smoking crack cocaine and participating in group sex, according to a report from the Associated Press.

“The story that he is selling doesn’t make sense,” Sam Talkin, Duplessie’s lawyer said in criminal court on Wednesday, the AP reported.

The lawyer for Woeltz added that witnesses told him the accuser moved about freely, contrary to accusations that he was held captive and tortured.

Woeltz was initially arrested and charged in late May, after the accuser allegedly escaped a Manhattan townhouse where he said he was held. According to prosecutors at the time, the alleged victim was bound, beaten, and electrocuted as the captors attempted to gain access to his crypto.

Assistant District Attorney Sarah Khan said that videos were leaked to try and present a counter-narrative indicating that the accuser was not permitted to leave the house freely as the defendant’s lawyers claim, according to the AP report

Police found evidence like a chainsaw and loaded pistol, which help corroborate the accuser’s story, alongside photos of him with a gun to his head and one where he is being set on fire, according to multiple reports. No burn marks were found on the alleged victim because the defendants quickly extinguished the flames, sometimes by urinating on him, per the AP.

Prosecutors additionally believe there may be two additional victims in other locations, and that the defendants have held people against their will before.

The pair, who were charged with first-degree kidnapping, assault, and more, could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted. They were denied bail and will be detained until their next court appearance on July 15.

A third person was arrested and charged in connection to the plot, but later released.

Physical attacks and kidnappings of crypto investors have become more high-profile this year, with perpetrators targeting individuals like Ledger CEO David Balland and the family of Paymium CEO and co-founder, Pierre Noizat.

A database of crypto “wrench attacks,” or physical altercations devised to steal someone’s crypto, already showcases nearly as many attacks in 2025 as the entirety of 2024.

Fighting Souls is a new tag fighting game from the devs of Guilty Gear

by admin June 5, 2025

“Avengers assemble” isn’t just a call to action for superheroes; it’s also the basis for a new tag fighting game. The reveal of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls closed out PlayStation’s State of Play presentation ahead of Summer Games Fest 2025. PlayStation Studios and Marvel Games are teaming up with Arc System Works, the studio behind the Guilty Gear fighting game series, for this project. The game is scheduled to launch some time in 2026 on PlayStation 5 and on PC through the Steam and Epic stores.

The trailer shows several members of the Marvel roster — Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord and Ghost Rider — cycling on screen and showing off their abilities. Team-based fighting games have a long lineage, but those are commonly trios of characters controlled by a single competitor. Marvel Tōkon ups the ante with a 4v4 team system.

The additional team member creates even more potential for flashy combination attacks. “One of the appeals of Marvel comics is seeing the vast cast of characters coming together to create all kinds of unique team-ups,” Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine said of the design choice. “With these two ideas in mind, we concluded that creating a 4v4 team VS system would be the best way to not only create those over-the-top moments, but to further evolve the tag fighting genre.”

Marvel is having a bit of a moment in gaming, with the team shooter Marvel Rivals becoming a surprise sensation in recent months despite heavy competition from established titles. (Unfortunately, that success didn’t save several members of the North American dev team from being laid off in February.) It should be fascinating to compare how the two genres interpret the iconic characters and their powers.

SafeMoon CEO Found Guilty in US Crypto Fraud Trial

by admin May 22, 2025

In brief

  • Braden Karony, CEO of SafeMoon, was convicted in a U.S. federal court of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering.
  • Prosecutors said Karony misled investors about access to the token’s liquidity pool and used millions in diverted funds for real estate and luxury cars.
  • The SafeMoon token once reached a market cap of more than $8 billion before collapsing amid fraud allegations.

A U.S. federal jury has found Braden Karony, the chief executive of digital asset firm SafeMoon, guilty on all counts in a crypto fraud case that prosecutors said led to the misappropriation of millions of dollars in investor funds.

Karony was convicted of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering following a 12-day trial before U.S. District Judge Eric R. Komitee in the Eastern District of New York. He faces up to 45 years in prison when sentenced.

A jury also ordered the forfeiture of one residential property and the proceeds from the sale of another, amounting to roughly $2 million.

Prosecutors said the scheme undermined investor confidence in digital assets and contributed to broader concerns about fraud in the crypto market.

“The SafeMoon digital asset was anything but safe and turned out to be pie in the sky for investors who were deliberately misled by Karony, a man who sought to get rich quick by stealing and diverting millions of dollars,” U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella, Jr. said in a statement.

Prosecutors alleged Karony and his “co-conspirators” misled investors about the structure and safety of SafeMoon, a token issued in 2021 that applied a 10% transaction tax on transfers.

Half of that fee was purportedly redistributed to token holders, while the remainder was said to be locked in a liquidity pool to support trading.

In reality, the Justice Department said Karony and others retained access to the liquidity pool and diverted substantial funds for personal use.

Despite public claims that they did not hold or trade SafeMoon tokens, Karony and others repeatedly bought and sold the asset for personal gain, including during peak prices, the court heard.

The diverted funds were used to purchase multiple properties, luxury vehicles, including an Audi R8 and Tesla, and custom trucks, according to the indictment.

Karony is accused of concealing his trading activity and use of investor funds through a series of pseudonymous wallets and unhosted accounts on centralized exchanges.

He personally obtained more than $9 million in crypto assets from the scheme, authorities said.

One co-defendant, Thomas Smith, has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing. Another, Kyle Nagy, remains at large.

The case was investigated by the FBI, IRS Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
