Anonymous Hacktivist Group Founder Spearheads Meme Coin While Facing 5 Years in Prison

by admin August 23, 2025

In brief

  • Aubrey Cottle, better known as Kirtaner online, is spearheading a Solana “movement coin” as a homage to Anonymous, a famous hacker group which he founded.
  • Fees earned by the token will be used to fund Cottle’s ongoing legal battle, buy tokens for Anonymous OGs, and potentially create a scholarship fund for young hackers.
  • Cottle faces five years in prison for his alleged connection to a 2021 data breach of the Republican Party of Texas.

“We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.”

The motto of notorious hacktivist group Anonymous has heralded some of the world’s most famous hacks, targeting everyone from the Westboro Baptist Church to Bank of America.

Now, one of its founding members is spearheading a Solana-based crypto project, which he brands as a “movement coin” rather than a traditional meme coin. The token is a homage to hacktivist culture, a way to help fund his ongoing legal battle, and a vehicle for the Anonymous movement to evolve.

Aubrey Cottle, more commonly known as Kirtaner or just Kirt online, told Decrypt that he was the founder of Anonymous, and has been widely reported as one of the founding members. Cottle faces up to five years in prison after the U.S. Department of Justice charged the Canadian in March for his alleged connection to a 2021 data breach of the Republican Party of Texas.

This prompted an unknown crypto degen to create ANON, a Solana token on the Bags launchpad, assigning fees associated with it to Cottle. The Canadian embraced the ANON token, which has climbed to a market cap of $8 million since its creation on August 15, generating more than $59,000 in fees for Cottle in the process.

The hacktivist founder told Decrypt that the fees, in part, will be used to fund his legal battle and ensure his family is financially sound “if the worst happens.” On top of this, Cottle said, he is buying back the ANON token and setting aside chunks of supply for the original Anonymous members.

“I want every single one of us to make it, all of our old heroes,” Cottle told Decrypt. “People who put their lives on the line, people who sacrificed, people who were hunted down by the feds, people who were scared for their lives, ended up with years and years of trauma from times long past that. Making everybody feel as if it wasn’t just something that we dumped half of our lives into and came out the other end just completely fucked up with nothing to show for it.”

What is Anonymous?

Anonymous is a decentralized, international hacktivist group, often visually represented by a Guy Fawkes mask inspired by the novel and film “V for Vendetta.” The group is known for a series of high-profile attacks on major corporations and governments that Anonymous deemed guilty of wrongdoing.

In 2010, the group performed DDoS attacks on PayPal, Visa, and MasterCard after they blocked donations to WikiLeaks; it also declared a cyber war against Russia following the nation’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

“Hacktivism is the only axis of power accessible to the disenfranchised that can still strike at scale; it’s a pressure valve that’s needed in society,” Cottle told Decrypt. “It is the only way that we can actively push back against hostile state and corporate powers.”

of the Anonymous collective, we can in fact report the truths of Anonymous’ collective actions against the Russian Federation. We want the Russian people to understand that we know it’s hard for them to speak out against their dictator for fear of reprisals. (cont)

— Anonymous (@YourAnonNews) February 24, 2022

The token’s community has embraced Anonymous culture to its core, not seeing ANON as a meme coin but rather a tokenized extension of the original hacktivist movement. One investor told Decrypt that the goal is to “push a rebellion” against institutions crippling everyday people.

The group has adopted phrases associated with Anonymous, including its iconic motto, as well as adapting slogans from meme coin culture. “The hat stays on,” associated with the Dogwifhat meme coin community, has become “The mask stays on” in a nod to the Guy Fawkes mask.

ANON investor Tx_Dak dubbed the token “the first real movement coin on Solana.” Speaking to Decrypt, they touted Cottle’s credentials as the “actual founder” of the “biggest decentralized movement in the world,” who has made the token his “legacy project.” They added that, “This isn’t even a coin. It’s a tokenized version of the movement itself that shaped internet history forever. And now it’s going to shape the blockchain forever.”

Inspiring a new generation of hacktivists

While the token’s surge in value helped revitalize Anonymous’ memetic value—which peaked in 2012 and 2020, per Google Trends—it may also help kick-start the next generation of hacktivists.

ANON will eventually become a “self-organizing machine, just like Anonymous is,” Cottle told Decrypt. “Once it gets to a certain point, there are initiatives that I want to do. I want to create a scholarship fund for young, talented hackers, so they can do things like get key certifications and blossom in their careers. I want to be able to put together initiatives, such as legal defense funding pools behind a nonprofit for hacktivists.”

Cottle clarified that by “careers,” he doesn’t necessarily mean specifically in hacking; he just wants to help kids who were like him flourish. He also said that the plan is some way off, estimating that to make good on it, ANON would have to hit a $200 million market capitalization—more than a 2,400% price increase from its current value.

“I’m not setting up a radicalization school,” Cottle said with a laugh. “This is an effort of pure goodwill and trying to lift other people up.”

Publicly-Listed AMTD Group Wants Investors’ Crypto in Equity Swap Program

by admin August 20, 2025

In brief

  • The group said the program aims to diversify its business, believing it would serve as a bridge between crypto and the NYSE.
  • AMTD plans to use their media, hospitality, and education assets to offer asset-allocation support, VIP experiences, and financial education.
  • All three are micro to small-cap companies, with the largest running at about $509 million.

On Tuesday, three affiliated NYSE-listed companies under AMTD Group proposed a crypto-for-stock conversion program that would let holders swap Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Binance’s BNB, and USDC for newly issued shares under the exchange.

AMTD IDEA (AMTD), AMTD Digital (HKD), and The Generation Essentials Group (TGE) formed the program with pricing that would be set by mutual agreement at prevailing market values, and allocations could be split across the three issuers.

Framing the plan as a “conduit and effective means” for portfolio diversification, the group said the issuances would “serve as a bridge connecting the world of crypto assets with one of the world’s leading stock exchanges.”

To flesh out what it touts as “adjacent offerings,” the group points to its media, hospitality, and education footprint as the delivery base.

Headquartered in France with presence in Singapore, AMTD runs digital media, marketing, investments, and hospitality/VIP services, while TGE owns L’Officiel, a French fashion magazine, and The Art Newspaper. It also operates entertainment projects and premium properties.

The group claims these assets will be used to help crypto holders “facilitate and better their experiences,” packaging asset-allocation support, leisure, and VIP experiences, as well as financial education.

The proposal also includes American depositary shares, which are U.S.-traded shares issued by a depositary bank that represent a specified number of a foreign issuer’s ordinary shares, among the securities that could be issued to crypto holders looking to convert their assets.

It’s worth noting that, by market capitalization size, the three are micro to small-cap issuers. AMTD has about $176 million, HKD has roughly $509 million, and TGE has $161 million in market size, per their respective data dashboards on Google Finance.

Of the three, only AMTD’s stock closed positively at 1.9%, with the other two down by 3.5% and 6.2% respectively, following the announcement.

The announcement disclosed no launch timeline, geography, investor eligibility, issuance caps, lockups, KYC or custody arrangements, or settlement mechanics, and stated it was not an offer or solicitation.

Decrypt reached out to the group for comment on whether the issuances would be registered, conducted as private placements, or offshore transactions, and whether U.S. persons would be eligible.

Dogecoin Comes Under Attack From Same Group That Orchestrated Monero’s 51% Takeover

by admin August 19, 2025

The Qubic community is now targeting Dogecoin (DOGE) following its recent and controversial attack on Monero (XMR). After executing a 51% takeover and claiming majority control over Monero’s hashrate, the group is now shifting focus toward the world’s largest meme coin, signaling what could become one of the most ambitious challenges yet against a major Proof of Work (PoW) network.

Qubic Targets Dogecoin After Monero Domination

The Dogecoin network has become the latest declared target of Qubic, the project that recently claimed to have orchestrated a successful 51% attack on Monero. Sergey Ivancheglo, known on  X social media as ‘Come-from-Beyond’ and the founder of Qubic, confirmed the move after a community vote on Discord placed Dogecoin as the overwhelming choice over competitors such as Kaspa and Zcash. The decision underscores a significant escalation in Qubic’s ambitions, shifting focus from privacy-focused networks to one of the largest and most recognizable meme coins in existence.

Qubic’s founder highlighted that the previous Monero operation served as a demonstration of what coordinated control over hashrate can achieve. By pooling resources, the project reportedly captured over 77.54% of Monero’s power, effectively proving that 51% attacks are not merely theoretical vulnerabilities but real threats that could paralyze entire ecosystems. Ivancheglo also described the attack as a wake-up call, claiming that it helped Monero developers accelerate their work on defensive measures.

Notably, crypto analysts have voiced concern that Qubic’s current focus on Dogecoin could represent a new frontier in network dominance. The Qubic pool previously boasted 4.29 GH/s of computational power that crushed Monero’s defenses, but Dogecoin’s scale presents a much more formidable challenge. Still, community insiders are not backing down, with many supporting the founder’s plan to dominate Dogecoin.

The Challenge Of Taking On Dogecoin’s Network

While Monero fell victim to Qubic’s calculated push, Dogecoin’s defense rests on an entirely different foundation. A Qubic Ambassador identified as the ‘QubicChurch’ on X explains that, unlike Monero’s CPU-friendly, ASIC-resistant RandomX algorithm, Dogecoin relies on the Scrypt algorithm and is merge-mined with Litecoin. This means that the majority of Litecoin’s massive mining infrastructure also secures Dogecoin, creating a combined shield of unprecedented scale.

As of August 18, 2025, Dogecoin’s hashrate stands at roughly 3.47 PH/s, while Litecoin adds 2.78 PH/s. Together, their combined network strength dwarfs Monero by over a million times. The Qubic Ambassador acknowledged this staggering gap, pointing out that preparation for such an attack on Dogecoin would require months of development.

Notably, the scale difference between Monero and Dogecoin also redefines the potential outcome. The  QubicChurch noted that if the project were to capture even 0.1% of the Dogecoin-Litecoin network, it would represent more computational power than the entire Monero network by a factor of over a thousand. At 1%, the leverage becomes astronomical, exceeding Monero’s power more than eleven thousand times over. For Qubic, such control would not only serve as proof of dominance but could also funnel massive cash flows into its ecosystem.

Why Digital Currency Group Is Suing Its Own Subsidiary Over $1.1 Billion Loan

by admin August 18, 2025

In brief

  • Digital Currency Group has sued its subsidiary Genesis, the now-shuttered crypto lender.
  • The crypto giant claims that a $1.1 billion loan it made to Genesis was more than enough to cover its losses following its 2022 collapse—and that the firm has actually profited.
  • The latest lawsuit comes after Genesis in May sued Digital Currency Group for $3.1 billion.

Digital Currency Group has sued its subsidiary Genesis, claiming that the collapsed crypto lender has actually profited in the long-term following its collapse and subsequent bailout.

In a lawsuit filed Thursday, DCG said that the $1.1 billion loan it gave to Genesis in 2022 was ultimately more than enough to cover its losses.

Crypto lender Genesis went bankrupt in 2023 as it had lent money to collapsed crypto firm Three Arrows Capital and other firms during the bear market and “crypto contagion” that spread across the industry in 2022.

DCG stepped in with capital to help repay Genesis customers. But in Thursday’s lawsuit, DCG argued that due to a rise in the value of recovered collateral from Three Arrows Capital, its obligations under the promissory note have been reduced to zero.

This, the lawsuit states, is because the assets from Three Arrows Capital were in Bitcoin and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust shares that have shot up in value since 2022.

“Genesis ultimately suffered no loss from TAC’s default; rather Genesis has profited by hundreds of millions of dollars (which Genesis is entitled to keep),” the lawsuit said.

It added: “Because of the significant appreciation in cryptocurrency values since the petition date, this has resulted in recoveries that exceed the dollar value of the creditors’ claims as of the petition date.”

Genesis was a crypto lender run by crypto behemoth DCG. It allowed users to earn cash on their crypto holdings by allowing them to be loaned out to others.

Genesis made billions of dollars in loans to beleaguered crypto firms like Three Arrows Capital and the FTX-linked Alameda Research, which were about to default on their debt due to market contagion stemming from the collapse of Terra.

When mega digital asset brand FTX collapsed, Genesis announced to clients that it would pause withdrawals from its lending arm due to the “unprecedented market turmoil.”

“DCG took extraordinary efforts to voluntarily support Genesis in 2022, including by issuing a promissory note to Genesis to help close a potential book equity gap resulting from the collapse of Three Arrows Capital,” a DCG spokesperson told Decrypt on Friday. “We have consistently met our contractual obligations under that note, but believe those have now been fully satisfied. We are simply asking the Court to confirm that the valid and binding obligation was fully satisfied.”

Thursday’s lawsuit comes after Genesis in May sued DCG, alleging that its parent company and CEO Barry Silbert made fraudulent transfers from the lender as it was collapsing in 2022. It’s seeking $3.1 billion in damages.

Editor’s note: This story was updated after publication to include a statement from DCG.
