Trump Tariffs, U.S. GDP Rattle Markets, ETFs Bleed $500M: Crypto Daybook Americas

by admin September 27, 2025

By Omkar Godbole (All times ET unless indicated otherwise)

It’s not been a happy 24 hours for crypto bulls, with the CoinDesk 20 Index dropping 5% and market leaders BTC$109,615.08 and ETH$4,016.39 falling nearly 2%.

Major altcoins such as XRP, BNB and SOL lost even more, and ASTR, the native token of Aster DEX, which recently flipped Hyperliquid in 24-hour volume, fell 4% as the decentralized exchange saw abnormal price movements in the XPL-USDT perpetual trading pair. Still, a few coins, including MNT, CRO, KAS, OKB and XMR, managed gains of around 1%.

The downturn coincides with a stronger dollar, pushed higher by Thursday’s U.S. GDP and jobless claims data. Meanwhile, market flow dynamics turned bearish.

“ETF behavior changed from a primary absorber of supply to a net seller this week,” analysts at BRN told CoinDesk. “Yesterday, Bitcoin ETFs posted $258 million of outflows while Ethereum ETFs recorded $251 million of outflows, marking four straight days of red for ETH funds.”

Whales have also become net sellers, offloading 147,000 BTC since Aug. 21, the most since the bull cycle began in early 2023, according to CryptoQuant.

Analysts at Bitunix exchange warned that President Donald Trump’s tariff announcements on Thursday have increased market uncertainty, with sentiment oscillating between “rising inflation” and “slowing growth.”

Trump announced tariffs of as much as 100% on trucks, furniture and pharmaceuticals, effective Oct. 1.

The Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, the core personal consumption expenditure, is due later today. The report is projected to show a 2.9% year-over-year rise in August, matching July. Month-on-month, it’s forecast to have increased 0.2%, slightly below July’s 0.3%, according to FactSet. A softer-than-expected print could temper the dollar’s rally, putting a floor under bitcoin and the wider crypto market.

Traders should remain vigilant about regulatory developments related to digital asset treasuries. A WSJ report on Thursday cited U.S. regulators’ concerns about unusual trading volumes and stock price volatility in over 200 companies linked to crypto treasury strategies. Regulatory pressure on these treasuries, or DATs, could accelerate market sell-offs.

Additionally, geopolitical developments warrant attention, as reports are circulating about Russia’s aerial incursions in Europe. WTI crude oil is already up 4% for the week, the most since June. Stay alert!

  • Plasma, a new blockchain purpose-built for stablecoins, launched its mainnet beta and native token XPL on Thursday, debuting with a fully diluted valuation that’s now above $12 billion.
  • The layer-1 network, backed by Bitfinex, Bybit, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino and tech billionaire Peter Thiel, entered the market with over $2 billion worth of XPL tokens in circulation.
  • Built for high-speed, low-fee stablecoin operations, Plasma aims to serve as the back end for a new class of DeFi applications. At launch, liquidity was already deployed across major platforms including Aave, Ethereum, Euler and Fluid.
  • These include Plasma One, which is billed as a “stablecoin-native neobank.”
  • Some tokens sold to U.S. investors are locked until mid-2026 due to regulatory restrictions, which may lower the effective float in early trading.

Derivatives Positioning

  • Most major tokens, including BTC and ETH continued to experience capital outflows from futures market, leading to a decline in the notional open interest (OI).
  • That’s only to be expected as the market soon shakes out overleveraged bets.

  • Smaller coins like KAS and KCS have seen a moderate increase in OI in the past 24 hours.
  • Volume in crypto perpetuals listed on Aster DEX has surged to over $46 billion in the past 24 hours, significantly higher than Hyperliquid’s $17 billion.
  • On the CME, BTC futures OI has almost reversed the early September spike from 134K BTC to 149K BTC, representing renewed capital outflows. On the other hand, OI in options continues to rise, approaching the November 2024 high of 56.19K BTC.
  • Positioning in ETH futures and options remains elevated on Deribit, with an annualized three-month basis at 7%, a significantly lower yield than SOL’s 15%.
  • BTC, ETH options risk reversals continue to lean bearish out to the December expiry, data from Deribit show. In SOL and XRP’s case, pricing is biased bullish for the year-end expiry.

US Commerce Dept. Puts GDP Data on Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana Blockchains

by admin August 31, 2025

The Department of Commerce announced Thursday it has begun uploading its GDP data onto nine blockchain networks, and will also enter partnerships with decentralized oracle networks Chainlink and Pyth to integrate U.S. macroeconomic data within the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem and the broader crypto economy.

The department’s GDP data release for Q2 2025 has already been uploaded to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and six other blockchains: Tron, Avalanche, Stellar, and Ethereum layer-2 networks Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism. They were aided in that effort by crypto exchanges Coinbase, Gemini, and Kraken, the department announced.

Chainlink confirmed to Decrypt that the company was not involved in the effort to upload the GDP data directly onto those networks.

Going forward, the partnerships with Chainlink and Pyth will enable the dissemination of verified U.S. government data—including GDP statistics, the inflation-tracking Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, and Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers, a key measure of economic demand—across the DeFi ecosystem.

The initiative marks the first time that a federal government agency has ever published economic data on-chain. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick—whose Wall Street firm, Cantor Fitzgerald, is deeply involved in the crypto economy—teased the move at a White House cabinet meeting earlier this week.

What is the purpose of such an integration? Answers vary. Pyth, in announcing the partnership with the U.S. government, hailed it as a step towards “increas[ing] confidence in public information systems” through data transparency.

Chainlink more specifically celebrated the ways in which U.S. government data will now be able to be used to fuel and support DeFi activity. The company said Thursday the verified data will soon support related prediction markets, encourage the development of new types of crypto assets, and increase the adaptability of tokenized assets, among other use cases.

The Department of Commerce did not immediately respond when asked by Decrypt what tangible benefits its new on-chain initiative will offer the federal government, versus other means of data publication.

“It’s only fitting that the Commerce Department and President Donald Trump, the ‘crypto-president,’ publicly release economic statistical data on the blockchain,” Commerce Secretary Lutnick said today in a statement. “We are making America’s economic truth immutable and globally accessible like never before, cementing our role as the blockchain capital of the world.”

The companies involved in today’s announcement have already benefited mightily from it. Pyth’s native token, PYTH, exploded by some 69% in value within minutes of the news breaking—a gain worth nearly $1 billion, in terms of the token’s fully diluted valuation.

Chainlink (LINK) popped a more modest 7.6% to $25.82, before settling back down to $24.76 at writing. The price gain was still, given LINK’s value, worth over $1.8 billion. The token notably, however, has surged over 40% in the last month—a pump worth over $7 billion.

Chainlink co-founder Sergey Nazarov has been a vocal supporter of the Trump administration’s crypto embrace this year, and attended both a White House crypto summit in March as well as President Donald Trump’s signing of the stablecoin-focused GENIUS Act there last month.

“I just want to express my deep gratitude,” Nazarov told Trump at the crypto summit, “for the seriousness with which you are approaching our industry.”

Today’s top news:

  • Crypto majors deep red down 3-6% ahead of PCE; BTC at $110,000
  • U.S. Commerce Dept begins publishing GDP data to blockchain with ChainLink and Pyth support
  • CTFC clears way for offshore crypto protocols to embrace U.S. users
  • Trump family’s American Bitcoin plans for September IPO
  • COPE runs 100x in just over a day, leading on-chain meme runners

🇺🇸📊 The U.S. Just Put GDP On-chain

A major U.S. agency has pushed core macro data on-chain.

And it opens a brand-new lane for crypto markets.

📌 What Happened

The Commerce Department began publishing official economic stats on blockchains and tapped oracle providers Chainlink and Pyth to distribute the data for smart contract use.

The initial rollout includes multiple networks, with Chainlink feeds already live.

For a quick overview of the details:

  • Data types going on-chain: Real GDP (level and QoQ annualized %), PCE Price Index (level and QoQ annualized %), and Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers (level and QoQ annualized %)
  • Frequency: Updates arrive monthly or quarterly as applicable
  • Where it’s publishing first (Chainlink feeds): Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Botanix, Ethereum, Linea, Mantle, Optimism, Sonic, ZKsync, with support expanding based on demand
  • Pyth’s role: Verify and distribute GDP releases, initially providing quarterly series with historical backfill

The market loved the news with PYTH ripping roughly 100% on the announcement, and LINK popping 5-8% (before retracing).

PYTH absolutely soars on the news it will help power on-chain GDP data

🗣️ What They’re Saying

“The Department of Commerce is going to start issuing its statistics on the blockchain… and we’re going to put out GDP on the blockchain, so people can use the blockchain for data distribution.” – Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

this is the most aggressive bullish barrage of news in one short time period that ive seen for crypto markets in the past ten years

— Ansem (@blknoiz06) August 28, 2025

🧠 Why It Matters

There is a whole lot to unpack here, but it’s all incredibly bullish.

From a government perspective, posting official numbers on public chains makes them tamper-evident and instantly checkable by anyone. That boosts confidence in the data (and trust).

From a data integration perspective, smart contracts can now react to GDP or PCE in real time. Think GDP-linked payouts, on-chain hedges, auto-rebalancing funds, and cleaner prediction markets that settle on official, immutable feeds.

From a crypto perspective, we now have a federal agency using crypto oracles to publish official numbers – signaling crypto infrastructure is crossing into mainstream.

This is a watershed moment for crypto.

The biggest players in the world are beginning to use blockchains for one of their native intended purposes (transparency & decentralization).

The U.S. government is a winner here (efficiency gains), the U.S. people are a winner here (more transparency), LINK and PYTH are direct winners here (showing their utility) and so is the broader crypto space (more adoption and credibility).

Are you tired of winning yet?

Bitcoin, Solana Rise as Investors Weigh Nvidia Earnings, Strong GDP Data

by admin August 28, 2025

In brief

  • Nvidia disclosed $46 billion in second-quarter profit.
  • The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3.3% in Q2.
  • Solana was up 2.3%, as one analyst pointed to interest from treasury firms.

The price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rose on Thursday as investors mulled the strength of Nvidia’s earnings and signs of a stronger-than-expected U.S. economy.

Bitcoin changed hands around $113,000, a 0.9% increase over the past day, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. Solana meanwhile rose 2.3% to $212. SOL was up nearly 5% at one point before retreating.

Ethereum and XRP dropped dropped 2.7% and 0.8%, respectively. ETH was trading near $4,500, well off its all-time high set over the weekend.

Nvidia disclosed record profits on Wednesday alongside its ninth straight quarter of year-over-year revenue growth of over 50%. The company took in $46 billion during the second quarter, despite not selling any of its advanced AI chips to China over the period.

The chipmaker’s shares fell 1.3% on Thursday to $179, according to Yahoo Finance. They are still up 2.6% on the week and 34% year-to-date, signaling that conviction in artificial intelligence is continuing to drive sky-high valuations on Wall Street.

For Bitcoin, Nvidia’s fortunes are relevant. The chipmaker has an 8.8% weighting in the S&P 500, so any swing in the $4.4 trillion company’s stock price could affect the market’s top cryptocurrency by market value, given the correlation between crypto and equities.

The U.S. Commerce Department said on Thursday that gross domestic product rose at an annualized rate of 3.3% in the second quarter. Economists initially expected the U.S. economy would grow at a 3.0% annualized rate, suggesting that the U.S. economy performed better under the president’s trade zig zags on tariffs and other trade policies.

Solana’s performance was notable on Thursday, considering that the latest rally in crypto prices has been marked by Ethereum’s strength and climb to a new all-time high.

Since Aug. 10, however, Solana has shown “relative strength” against Bitcoin and Ethereum, with price ratios recovering from recent lows, according to Jake Ostrovskis, an OTC transfer at the crypto market maker Wintermute.

The cryptocurrency has returned to focus amid “growing interest in treasuries targeting the asset,” Ostrovskis said. Earlier this week, The Information reported that venture capital firm Pantera Capital is seeking to raise $1.25 billion for a Nasdaq-listed vehicle that would hold Solana.

Solana treasury firms have the potential to absorb defunct crypto exchange FTX’s vesting supply of tokens, which equates to around 609,000 SOL each month. The bankrupt exchange started making repayments to customers in February.

“By converting this ‘overhang’ into staked, treasury-held assets, effective circulating supply shrinks, countering downward pressure and setting the stage for sustained upside,” Ostrovskis said.

U.S. Commerce Dept to Publish GDP on Blockchain

by admin August 26, 2025

The U.S. Commerce Department will start posting important economic data, including GDP reports, on the blockchain directly. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick made the announcement at a White House cabinet meeting, describing it as a move toward greater efficiency and transparency.

Lutnick indicated the change begins with GDP but potentially could go across agencies, providing markets and the public quicker, tamper-evident access to federal data.

“The Department of Commerce is going to begin publishing its stats on the blockchain because you are the crypto president,” he informed President Trump.

By putting data on the blockchain, the government seeks to lower the risk of fraud, increase confidence, and offer real-time figures verified in real-time.

The action comes after recent U.S. initiatives incorporating blockchain technology into economic infrastructure, such as the GENIUS Act endorsing stablecoins.

According to analysts, blockchain-reporting can increase investor confidence and represents one of the largest government endorsements of the tech.

US Commerce to publish GDP data on blockchain, says Lutnick

by admin August 26, 2025

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the Department of Commerce will begin publishing economic statistics, including gross domestic product (GDP) data, on the blockchain.

Lutnick made the announcement during a White House cabinet meeting on Tuesday, describing the effort as a move to expand blockchain-based data distribution across government agencies. Speaking to US President Donald Trump and other government officials, he said:

“The Department of Commerce is going to start issuing its statistics on the blockchain, because you are the crypto president, and we are going to put our GDP on the blockchain so people can use it for data and distribution.”

Lutnick said the initiative will begin with GDP figures and could expand across federal departments after the Commerce Department finishes “ironing out all of the details” for the implementation.

Global adoption shows blockchain’s potential for governments

Other governments have already adopted the technology in public administration.

In 2016, Estonia’s government integrated Guardtime’s KSI blockchain into its e-Health system to secure over a million patient records. The same infrastructure now underpins parts of its digital ID network, making the Baltic nation an early pioneer.

In 2018, the European Commission and the European Blockchain Partnership launched the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), a permissioned network built on Hyperledger Besu. Member states such as France, Slovenia and Denmark host validator nodes, giving it a decentralized structure designed to deliver cross-border public services that are verifiable and trustworthy.

In 2021, Singapore and Australia trialed a blockchain system to issue and verify cross-border trade documents, reducing paperwork and cutting costs. And in 2024, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles digitized 42 million car titles on a permissioned Avalanche blockchain to curb lien fraud and streamline vehicle transfers.

Before his fallout with US President Donald Trump, Elon Musk floated the idea of running parts of the US government on the blockchain, a proposal that drew comparisons to Europe’s EBSI project.

Blockchain can record data, but can’t control its accuracy

The plan comes as Trump has repeatedly questioned the reliability of US economic data.

In April, he downplayed a 0.3% first-quarter GDP contraction as a tariff-driven blip, and in May, he dismissed a Congressional Budget Office forecast of 1.8% growth as biased while predicting the economy could expand by as much as 9%.

On Aug. 1, Trump fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer after a July jobs report showed only 73,000 new positions and sharp downward revisions to earlier months, accusing her of releasing “rigged” data and sparking alarm among economists.

As Cointelegraph has reported, blockchain offers governments advantages for handling data, from tamper-proof recordkeeping and secure digital identities to transparent information sharing and auditable transactions.

However, while the technology can secure how data is stored and shared, it does not address the accuracy of the data itself.
