RFK Jr.’s Comments On Guns And Video Games Are Lethally Stupid

by admin September 11, 2025

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has declared that he believes video games could be a cause of gun violence in America. Speaking to PBS (as spotted by GameSpot), the U.S. health secretary explained that the National Institutes of Health are looking into possible causes for gun violence, during which he named “video games and social media” as likely culprits. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also believes there’s no connection between HIV and AIDS and that fluoride in the water causes IQ loss.

Blaming video games for real-world violence is about as old as video games themselves. Despite this, no reputable studies have ever shown any link between violent games and significant increases in violent behavior in those who play them, and there has never been a credible example of a school shooting directly influenced by playing a game. The causes of real-world violence are already incredibly well known: socioeconomic inequity, social service inequality, a lack of mental health support, and the widespread availability of guns without appropriate laws to restrict their use, among other things. These, however, are all areas unpopular with right-leaning governments, and as such other scapegoats have always been sought.

“The firearms question is a complex question,” RFK Jr. eventually managed to splutter out when PBS asked whether there was any discussion over access to firearms and children’s mental health. He then went on a deeply disturbing tangent about how school shootings only started in the 1990s, and in his day kids were encouraged to bring guns to school and nothing bad ever happened. This is, of course, entirely untrue. Given RFK steered things to the subject of schools, let’s look at that specifically:  School shootings already frighteningly ubiquitous in the 1950s, and by the time RFK was in school in the 1960s, the United States saw 100 school shootings across the decade. The number for the 1990s was 123, so while worse, not enormously so. The horrific shooting at Columbine High School in 1999, where 16 students were murdered, certainly brought a lot of attention to school shootings because of its awful scale. But it wasn’t representative of a change in the decade, and it also wasn’t the start of a new era. In 2000, a still tragic total of six people died in school shootings across the entire year, and in 2001, five. It wouldn’t be until 2007 and the hideous Virginia Tech shootings that anything on that scale was seen again. And after this point, it started to become more common.

In the first decade of the 2000s, the total number of deaths in fact dropped to 87, and it was really from 2010 onward that the rate of school shootings began to rapidly escalate. 263 in the 2010s and already 216 in just the first five years of this decade. Deflecting to the ’90s is not only dishonest, but demonstrative of the Trump government’s (and many previous governments’) lack of interest in properly exploring the issues, at a time when the numbers of school shootings are now doubling every decade.

In the press conference, Kennedy makes a point that the left has been yelling for decades, not least following Michael Moore’s 1999 documentary Bowling for Columbine: that other countries have comparable levels of gun ownership, but where mass shootings are all but non-existent. He even cites that the U.S. has a mass shooting every 23 hours. These are figures Republicans often wish to deny, usually at the behest of the NRA, but Kennedy just comes out and says them. But then, with the crushing inevitability of a man who thinks vaccines cause autism and that Black people have stronger immune systems than white people, he followed it up with the most dangerous words imaginable.

“There are many, many things that happen [incoherent word-sounds] that can explain…one is…dependence on…psychiatric drugs,” said the man in charge of the nation’s health. Psychiatric drugs are, of course, in part a preventative measure against violent acts, and obviously in no way at all a cause. But he continues, “There could be a connection with video games, social media [awkward pause], a number of things, and we are looking at that.” He then switches back and says “we are doing studies now, or initiating studies, that look at the correlation and the connection—the potential connection—between over-medicating our kids and this violence. And these other possible co-founders [sic] as well.”

Of course, few people are going to be surprised at this point that Robert Kennedy would come out with a screed of unscientific, conspiratorial gibberish, but it doesn’t get any less frightening for its frequency. The man who recently said that his department was also looking into the dangers of airplane “chemtrails” is obviously an uninformed, deeply stupid person who has no interest in reality, let alone truth. But he’s also the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, and as such is a lethal danger to all Americans. That lethality extends to deliberately ignoring the known causes of gun violence, to instead focus on ridiculously irrelevant nonsense, such that there is little to no hope of the situation improving, that situation being the deaths of children in schools at a rate of one school shooting every five days.

It’s very easy for a video games site to look overly defensive when it comes to claims about gaming and violence. However, it is my contention that we are the people who need to be most interested in this possibility, and as such I have followed the discussions and the studies on the subject for the last 25 years. If games are dangerous, I want to be the first person to know. But all rigorous science has shown either no connection, or in fact a (usually very slight) mitigating factor, making some less likely to act violently. (Not enough to get excited about, but enough to suggest the exact opposite is even more unlikely.)

As such, the constant use of “video games” as a scapegoat for issues caused by poverty, inequality, and a lack of mental health support has always been deeply troubling. The more politicians and people in power misdirect, point toward irrelevant factors, the more the real issues prevail, and the more dangerous the situation becomes. Lazily saying “video games” (or “rock-and-roll music” or “video nasties” or whatever the bogeyman du jour might be) is therefore extremely dangerous, even deadly.

What’s even more frightening here is that Kennedy is a man who not only repeats this tiresomely common refrain, but makes it so much worse by actively campaigning against the things that are helping: the provision of psychiatric support to children.

But then Kennedy is simultaneously spreading misinformation about trans healthcare, believes covid was “ethnically targeted” to not infect Ashkenazi Jews and the Chinese, and states that wifi causes “leaky brain.” The man is a dangerous fool in almost every regard.

All The Games Being Added To The PS Plus Catalog In September

by admin September 11, 2025

Fall is nearly here. People around my place are putting up Halloween decorations already. I’m leaving my windows open and going outside more. But I’ll try to stay in and enjoy some of the new games being added to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog this month, like The Invincible and Persona 5 Tactica.

On September 10, PlayStation officially announced the next round of PS Plus Extra and Premium games that will be added to the subscription service’s game catalog. All of these newly revealed games will be available to start downloading and playing on September 16.

I’m really happy to see Crow Country on here. This indie lo-fi retro survival horror game caught my attention last year when it launched, but I never got around to playing it because there were (and still are) too many damn games. That made me sad, but now that it’s waiting for me on my PS5 as we enter Spooky Season, I’m going to try and play it. Another horror game included here, Conscript, also seems like a perfect Halloween game. Heck, even Legacy of Kain: Defiance, this month’s classic game, has some creepy, gothic horror vibes, too.  If PlayStation is giving out two horror games in September, I’m hopeful that next month’s offerings will include even more spooky titles!

Remember, to access, download, and play these games, you’ll need to be an active PS Plus Extra or Premium tier subscriber. Essential tier subscribers don’t get access to the game catalog. And if your subscription runs out in the future, you’ll no longer be able to play these games.

Anyway, here’s the full list of games being added to PS Plus and its various tiers next week:

PlayStation Plus Extra And Premium

  • WWE 2K25 – PS5, PS4
  • Persona 5 Tactica – PS5, PS4
  • Green Hell – PS5, PS4
  • Fate/Samurai Remnant – PS5, PS4
  • Crow Country – PS5, PS4
  • The Invincible – PS5
  • Conscript – PS5

PlayStation Plus Premium Only

  • Legacy of Kain: Defiance – PS5, PS4

As government money tightens its grip on fighting games, the push back to grassroots events gains momentum

by admin September 11, 2025

Last week, the news broke that the Saudi Arabian city project Qiddiya had acquired an American talent management and brand consulting firm called RTS. Now, you may not have heard of RTS, but you may have heard of the video game event it co-owns: Evo.

Evo, the largest fighting game tournament in the world, is now owned in-part by the Saudi Arabian government. This government, criticised heavily for its human rights record, has brought the jewel of the fighting game community into its ever-growing sportswashing venture.

The reaction was loud and largely negative in the wake of this announcement, with a wave of fighting game fans and professionals decrying the move, pledging to never attend an Evo again, and urging others to focus their interest and money towards community-owned grassroots events. But will this manifest in reality, or remain just a topic-of-the-week on social media? To find out, I reached out to those who’ve dedicated a chunk of their lives to the genre to find out if the sentiment to go back to basics is real.

“I fully expected it – it was a little sooner than I thought it would – but at some point it was bound to happen” says Jack “Kenno” Kenwright, a UK-based commentator. He continued by pointing to other games and the growing Saudi government presence there: “Rocket League, League of Legends, Counter Strike… All these games have already been largely assimilated. They’re being supported by certain companies that some people might have issues with, some people might not care about, and some people might be fine with. That’s been going on for ages and eventually it was going to come to the FGC. It’s the monkey’s paw isn’t it? People want a cheaper event with higher budgets and prize pools and it’s like, well, you got it!”

Laura “Femshep” Genn, an up-and-coming competitive Street Fighter 6 player, echoed this lack of shock: “It was never going to stop at the Esports World Cup. You don’t pour that kind of money into something and decide, we’re good. We don’t need any more opportunities to present the messages that EWC is putting out there politically. I’m a bit of a chronic optimist so I had hoped it would have been at least a bit less overt for a while longer.”

While some like Kenwright and Genn saw this coming and were prepared with pre-existing opinions on the matter of Saudi Arabian sportswashing, others had the recent acquisition act as a push to educate themselves. People like Tekken content creator and coach Stephen “Speedkicks” Stafford, whose reservations lie in the general concern around governmental involvement rather than specific concerns around Saudi Arabia.

“I’m not personally into doing events affiliated with governments, regardless of what government it is. I’m not prosecuting any specific government, I just don’t think we should be doing politically-enforced events. After looking into what the Saudi government has been doing and the WWE events there I was like, I don’t like this as the future of fighting games. I don’t think there’s any specific nation where I’d be happy if they bought Evo.”

“At least with the rich guys who came in in FGC money-pumps past, who were like I’m gonna own this or buy this, they see no return and they leave. We know what they’re here to do – they’re here to make money. They may be misguided, as long as they believe they can make money, we take their money and that’s great for us! We get this money pump event and move on. But when it’s a government-funded event it’s different – their interest doesn’t have to be profit. And here there’s an interest beside money.”

What does the future hold for EVO? The public opinion is sour. | Image credit: Evo / Sony Interactive Entertainment

With all this in mind the big question is clear: would these people with aspirations and careers tied to fighting games attend Evo now that it’s under this controversial new management? The answers varied, but all believed that a refocus on community-led grassroots events was the best path forward.

Stafford expressed that for him, this is where the line is: “Other people are looking at it from a more moral disagreement side, they don’t want any association and that’s where they draw their line. For me it’s about the health of the scene, I want it to thrive. When EWC was just a motivator that got people to play and got them money and sponsors, that was fine. Now, the hard ownership of the most prestigious open-bracket tournament… I don’t know what their plan is but we know the agenda is they’re selling this city. We’re in their hands now.”

For Kenwright, he’d still likely go if offered a commentary job at Evo, but would prefer to attend other US-events first: “I think at the moment it hasn’t changed my perspective of Evo, because I already would rather go to other events like Combo Breaker, Texas Showdown, CEOtaku etc. I would rather go to them first before I fully ingest myself into Evo as I’ve never experienced the American scene. It’s still second priority.

“As for working for Evo, it’s still a goal, it will always be a goal, but obviously it’s one that I’m a little bit more hesitant about now as I have a lot of friends in the Guilty Gear Strive and Granblue scenes who look at it another way. Obviously my goals are my goals and they won’t be affected by other people, but if you go to those events and to certain places it’s… you’re essentially saying your stance when you take those roles. But, if I was still called up for work, I’d probably still go.”

Street Fighter 6 publisher, Capcom, has received over $1 billion in investment from the Saudi Arabian public investment fund. | Image credit: Capcom

Genn is certain that they wouldn’t feel comfortable going to Evo, even if they believe that the event will remain an enjoyable experience for the average attendee. “Right now I don’t think I would feel comfortable going back to Evo. I don’t expect the event to change in any significant way in terms of attendee experience. I had a lovely time this year just like I did at every major I attend, and had a lovely time. If anything, with more money coming in the production quality might improve. But I don’t think that amount of money coming in will happen if Evo isn’t playing the same ads and messaging, social media posts, and the same lines in interviews as has been said at the EWC.

“With the EWC there’s a glaring absence of women, I’m sure there are some, but not as many as I’ve seen in other places. There are no visibly queer people at all because the message they sent when asked if people would be safe attending the EWC is to respect their laws. Those laws, whether or not they’re always enforced, are if you are visibly queer you can be put to death. The implication being ‘just play the game, and don’t be visibly queer in any way’.”

“I already would rather go to other events like Combo Breaker, Texas Showdown, or CEOtaku.”

So what will happen now? Unfortunately, from the perspective of those interviewed, a sizable portion of the playerbase who wish to continue chasing a career in the fighting game space has little choice but to swallow any disdain they might have. As Stafford put it: “The most annoying thing about this is it’s clearly designed to be successful. Fighting games were just at the point where people could escape their livelihood, but not at the point where people could boycott certain big events. They aren’t receiving a salary if they aren’t attending Evo, EWC, to do all that stuff. Aside from the prize pools, they just wouldn’t be in the money-making ecosystem. So they got us! It’s not reasonable to expect top players to take a moral stand when they have to eat.”

Genn also acknowledges the tricky situation, but believes what’s key at this point is honest conversations around what has happened and why it’s happening: “People need to be able to come to their own conclusions on what decision they’d like to make in light of their personal ethics, and what they would like their money to support. If you decide the best thing to do is to be involved, loud, and visible? Okay! If you decide like me you don’t want to be at an event funded by that source? Okay! But let’s not pretend that’s not where the money is coming from, or there aren’t legitimate concerns.

“It is becoming increasingly impossible to engage in the serious competitive part of the FGC in a prolonged capacity without being willing to participate in the EWC. If only because the large sponsorships that fund your ability to attend large tournaments are funding you because they anticipate you attending the EWC, and they want their brand there. I understand that not every player can say I’m not going to attend this as it would functionally be the end of their career, and I don’t think it’s our place to make that call for everybody. But likewise I do think it’s moral cowardice to parrot phrases like ‘there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism’ as a shield for decisions we make.”

This year’s Esports World Cup was, controversially, held in Riyadh. | Image credit: Esports World Cup.

For Kenwright, Genn, and Stafford, what’s crucial now is to support local events that lack that murky governmental conundrum, to refocus on what built up the scene into what it was in the first place – community run events where money takes second place to the social and competitive experience.

“If you do have trouble with this news, don’t just show it on Twitter by making a quick post, show it by supporting your locals,” stated Kenwright. “Supporting a place where you feel safe, or just somewhere you know you’ll enjoy. My stance will always be: put your money where your mouth is.”

“The coolest thing about the FGC in my opinion is that we’re on the smaller side of esports, but if you were to remove esports things like the potential to get paid, to get famous… Fighting games would probably have the most players left over,” stated Stafford. “You’ll have the most players willing to show up for no money, just to have a good time with some cool people.”

Stafford continued: “With fighting games it’s important we still protect that. So in my mind, I won’t be associated with those bigger clout events. Anything EWC affiliated, EWC-partnered events like Combo Breaker, CEO. I won’t be restreaming or talking about them on my platform at all. We’ll still have a good time as we revert to more FGC and less esports. I want people to know there’s still an avenue for that experience that isn’t giant esports Saudi Arabian tournaments.

I won’t be restreaming or talking about them on my platform at all.

“That way, in a few years if Saudi Arabia gets bored and the community has been a great means-to-an-end, their city is huge and they don’t need fighting games, the FGC will survive.”

For Genn, now’s the time for people to go out and support their local communities. Failing that, it’s time to start your own. “The majority of people have a local they can go to, that they’ve never attended. And if there isn’t, they can start one. There are all kinds of amazing events at a small scale. The heart of the FGC is a local where you and your friends are there for the love of the game. It’s called the fighting game community, not the fighting game prize pot. It’s always been about the people. The best way to show we value the prize pot is to recognise there’s value to be found in an event where you win and get $20 or less.”

A Ton Of Nintendo Switch Games Are Really Cheap Right Now

by admin September 10, 2025

We’re about to get a ton of new games coming out this fall, but if you want to catch up on older stuff you already missed, a recent sale on physical Switch games is a great place to start. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, and more are all decently discounted right now.

The sale is going on at the Amazon-owned daily deals site Woot which frequently unloads extra inventory of physical video games at cheap prices. The current sale is especially good, with just about ever major first-party Nintendo Switch game being $15-20 below the standard sticker price (which the company notoriously never lowers no matter how old the game is).

Here are some of best deals:

  • Super Mario Party Jamboree – $44 (27 percent off)
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3 – $43 (28 percent off)
  • Super Mario RPG – $35 (42 percent off)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – $47 (22 percent off)
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze – $44 (27 percent off)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – $46 (23 percent off)
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Super Mario Odyssey – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Metroid Dread – $47 (22 percent off)
  • Splatoon 3 – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Mario & Luigi: Brothership – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Pokémon Shining Pearl/Brilliant Diamond – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Pokémon Scarlet/Violet – $47 (22 percent off)

If you already own a Switch 2, this is a great opportunity to snag any of these games you might have missed last generation. Not only do they work thanks to backwards compatibility, many of them even play better on the new, more powerful hardware. Super Mario Party Jamboree has an upgraded version on Switch 2 with new DLC for $80, so with this deal you can effectively save $16 off that completely new release. Unfortunately, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which both look outstanding on Switch 2, aren’t part of the current sale.

Mario Kart World is already on sale for $10 off

It’s also worth noting, for anyone who didn’t get the Mario Kart World Switch 2 bundle, that Nintendo’s newest racer is part of the current Woot sale. It’s currently $70 for the physical edition, which doesn’t feel like saving much, but hey, welcome to the world of $80 games. Of course, if you were somehow coming to the Switch ecosystem for the first time and had to choose between either Mario Kart World or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I would definitely recommend the latter. It’s cheaper and it feels like a more classic Mario Kart experience that benefits from years of post-launch updates and support, including dozens of extra characters and tracks in the form of a paid DLC add-on.

Go buy Xenoblade Chronicles X

Monolith Soft’s remaster of the Wii U open-world RPG only came out earlier this year and the Woot discount is its cheapest price yet. It’s $47 for a physical copy (the international version) which is 22 percent off the standard $60 price. It’s the definitive version of a great game that belongs in every RPG lover’s Switch collection. I suspect physical copies of it will become harder and harder to find, too. The soundtrack is great, the mechs are fun, and the world is sci-fi as hell.

Only nine franchises make up the top 20 all-time best-selling PlayStation chart in the US – can you guess how many are Call of Duty games?

by admin September 10, 2025

In honour of PlayStation’s 30th birthday yesterday in the US, data company Circana has dug out figures showing the top 20 best-selling PlayStation video games ever (date-range Jan 1995 to July 2025). Don’t get too excited.

Call of Duty dominates it, occupying nine of the top 20 spots, though Rockstar’s games lead the list, with Grand Theft Auto 5 top, Red Dead Redemption 2 fourth, GTA San Andreas fifth and GTA Vice City ninth.

The surprise performer for me is Insomniac’s relatively recent Marvel’s Spider-Man series, with the debut 2018 game in sixth and the PlayStation 5-launch-adjacent Miles Morales expandalone in 12th.

Elsewhere you’ll spot Minecraft, The Last of Us, God of War, Skyrim, and Rainbow Six Siege.

Watch on YouTube

The top-20 best-selling PlayStation games in the US ever, according to Circana senior director Mat Piscatella, are as follows.

Best-selling PlayStation games (all PlayStation platforms, US)

  1. Grand Theft Auto 5
  2. Minecraft
  3. Red Dead Redemption 2
  4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
  6. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  7. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War
  9. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)
  11. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  12. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  13. The Last of Us
  14. God of War (2018)
  15. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
  16. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  17. Rainbow Six: Siege
  18. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  19. Call of Duty: WW2
  20. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

The list changes when you re-order it according to dollars made. There are now 11 Call of Duty games in the top 20, though GTA 5 still leads and Red Dead Redemption 2 is now third. The older GTA games San Andreas and Vice City drop down, presumably as they were less monetised, as does the cheaper Minecraft. But Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series gains a third entry with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 showing up in 18th.

The most welcome change to this list, though, is Guitar Hero 3 appearing in 10th – its income presumably buoyed by the expensive plastic pack-in guitar peripheral and buyable, downloadable song packs. I miss that series.

Here’s the top-20 highest grossing PlayStation games in the US ever (date-range Jan 1995 to July 2025).

Highest-grossing PlayStation games (all PlayStation platforms, US)

  1. Grand Theft Auto 5
  2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
  3. Red Dead Redemption 2
  4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)
  5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War
  7. Minecraft
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  9. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  10. Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock
  11. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  12. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  13. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  14. Call of Duty: WW2
  15. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  16. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023)
  17. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  18. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  19. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  20. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

But that’s not all, stats fans! While spelunking in the archives, Piscatella dug up two other notable best-seller lists. One of them was for PlayStation 1 games only, which is relevant because it was the 30th anniversary of PS1 yesterday (9th September) in the US. And the other was for the best-selling Dreamcast games ever. Why? Because the Dreamcast was released on the same day, 9th September, albeit four years later than PS1, in 1999.

In the PS1 list we see the origins of some of PlayStation’s longest-running series, such as Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid – series I’m somewhat surprised not to see in the best-selling all-PlayStations list above. We also see Spyro doing well, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater doing well, and the Driver series doing well – which has since disappeared. The most recent game in that series was the somewhat overlooked Driver: San Francisco from 2011, in which you could body-shift from car to car. Also present: Final Fantasies 7 and 8, and Crash Team Racing.

The best-selling PS1 games of all time (Jan 1995 to July 2025) in the US are as follows.

Best-selling PS1 games (US)

  1. Gran Turismo 2
  2. Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back
  3. Gran Turismo
  4. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped
  5. Jampack Series: PlayStation
  6. Frogger (1997)
  7. Spyro the Dragon
  8. Crash Bandicoot
  9. Tekken 3
  10. Driver
  11. Final Fantasy 7
  12. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
  13. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
  14. Metal Gear Solid
  15. Namco Museum: Vol. 3
  16. CTR: Crash Team Racing
  17. WWE Warzone
  18. Driver 2
  19. Final Fantasy 8
  20. Spyro Dragon 2: Rage

On Dreamcast, meanwhile, we see an alarming amount of sports games. But besides them there are some absolute classics: Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi – I didn’t realise it was this popular. There’s SoulCalibur of course, Bass Fishing, Resi Code Veronica. What a console!

The best-selling Dreamcast games of all-time (Jan 1995 to July 2025) in the US are as follows.

Newzoo: Global games market forecast to reach $188.8bn in 2025

by admin September 10, 2025

The global games market is estimated to reach $188.8 billion in 2025, a 3.4% increase year-on-year according to Newzoo’s latest report.

Console revenues are predicted to lead this growth, with the segment forecast to rise 5.5% to $45.9 billion. Newzoo cites the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 as the main driver, as well as “higher software prices and major releases”.

Mobile is set to maintain the largest share of overall revenues, and is projected to generate $103 billion.

However, the data firm notes that issues with discoverability may slow the segment, as “app stores and web shops are flooded with new games”.

Looking at PC, revenues are projected to increase 2.5% YoY to $39.9 billion, representing 21% of the total market share.

Newzoo notes that H1 releases including Monster Hunter Wilds, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will help drive 2025 revenues.

Elsewhere, the global player base is forecast to reach 3.6 billion this year, rising 4.4% year-on-year. Mobile player growth is estimated to reach 3 billion players, up 4.5% compared to the previous period.

As for other platforms, console players will continue to grow 2.5% to 645 million players – despite being described as “the slowest-growing platform” – while PC audiences are set to increase 3.1% to 936 million players.

Meanwhile, Newzoo predicted that the total number of paying players will reach 1.6 billion, representing 44% of total players with an average spend of $119.7.

Many Resident Evil Games Are Reportedly Getting Switch 2 Ports

by admin September 10, 2025

Various industry leakers and soothsayers are claiming that Resident Evil 7 will get a Switch 2 port and that it will be announced at the rumored upcoming Nintendo Direct. Meanwhile, another industry insider with a solid track record says that many Resident Evil games powered by Capcom’s RE Engine are getting ported to Nintendo’s new console, too.

On September 3, well-known and reliable Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem shared that they had heard that Capcom was bringing “all the Resident Evil RE engine games” to Switch 2. This news was shared on ResetEra in a forum thread about rumors that the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem would arrive on Switch 2 and PS4. Some assumed that, if Capcom was reportedly bringing the newest Resident Evil game to Switch 2, it might be possible for recent entries built using the same tech to arrive on Nintendo’s hybrid machine as well. And it sounds like that’s exactly what the publisher has planned.

Other leakers have since claimed that Capcom will announce a Switch 2 port of 2017’s Resident Evil 7 at a rumored Direct later this month. On Tuesday, Dusk Golem shared more information on social media. While the leaker couldn’t confirm those specific RE7 announcement rumors, admitting that they don’t have information about Capcom’s marketing plan, Dusk Golem did reiterate that they have heard “several times now” that Capcom has been working for “a hot minute” on bringing all the main RE Engine-powered Resident Evil titles to Switch 2. Importantly, the leaker clarified on social media that these will be native Switch 2 ports and not streaming versions powered by the cloud.

BONUS 2 I guess: I didn’t tweet it, but if anyone wants to read what I originally said this (and why I was asked about it), was last week here:https://t.co/jiVxmztiVC

“I’m guessing they’re lining up a number of the Switch 2 ports, and those PS5 versions of various Resident Evil games rated within the last year, as part of their 30-year anniversary celebration stuff,” conjectured Dusk Golem. “But that’s a guess on my side. Them happening is not though.”

It makes sense that Capcom would bring all of the RE Engine-developed Resident Evil games to Switch 2, as every one of those games, starting with Resident Evil 7, has arrived on PlayStation 4, including RE4 Remake. So the engine is very scalable, and the company already has less graphically intense versions of these horror games ready to be ported to the Switch 2. Now we just have to wait and see if these rumors and leaks end up being true or if the real nightmare is that the Switch 2 never gets a single Resident Evil game. At the very least, next year we get a brand new Resident Evil game on PS5, Xbox, and PC.

List Of All-Time Best-Selling PlayStation Games Makes For Depressing Reading

by admin September 9, 2025

The original PlayStation hit U.S. shores 30 years ago today, helping usher in a disc-based gaming revolution that reshaped the industry. Four new consoles and lots of hardware iterations later, PlayStation is the undisputed winner in the high-end console gaming space. What were the top-selling games that helped it get there? A newly released list of the top all-time performers across all PlayStation platformers in the States tells part of the story, and it’s a pretty depressing one.

Circana gaming research director Mat Piscatella released the list of the top 20 games across PlayStation’s history in the U.S. by unit sales to commemorate the PS1’s birthday. Here they are:

  1. Grand Theft Auto V
  2. Minecraft
  3. Red Dead Redemption II
  4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
  6. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  7. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  9. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)
  11. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  12. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  13. The Last of Us God of War (2018)
  14. God of War (2018)
  15. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  16. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  17. Rainbow Six: Siege
  18. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
  19. Call of Duty: WWII
  20. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

The top spots aren’t shocking. GTA 5 and Minecraft are the two best-selling game ever across any platform. Red Dead Redemption II is the fifth-best. Sony’s critically acclaimed first-party blockbusters also rank highly. And then it’s just a sea of Call of Duty. Modern Warfare, Black Ops, good ones, bad ones, it doesn’t matter, they all rank, smothering any greater sense of the breadth, variety, and whimsy of the games released on PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5 over the years.

“Man, this list makes me sad,” Digital Foundry‘s John Linneman opined. “Most people playing games really only play the same few titles huh.” Big sigh. Much agree. Cultural PlayStation juggernauts that didn’t make the list include but are not limited to: WipeOut, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid 2, Tekken 3, Street Fighter 4, Dark Souls, Nier: Automata, The Witcher 3, Persona 5, and Cyberpunk 2077.

Even now, annualized Call of Duty sequels remain yearly best-sellers, cannibalizing much of the remaining market for big-budget console releases. I keep waiting for the wheels to fall off the Activision military shooter machine, not because the games are terrible or I want anyone to lose their jobs but because I think we have enough Call of Duty to last us another quarter century and I bet all of those developers could make new, original stuff that’s really cool, too.

Over 50% of games industry layoffs have taken place in California

Over 50% of games industry layoffs have taken place in California

by admin September 9, 2025

The current climate of layoffs is as prevalent as ever in the games industry, and Amir Satvat has provided more insight into the locations most affected – with more than 50% of cuts taking place in California.

Satvat, who is business development director at Tencent Games, also runs a community of resources for people looking to find work after being affected by layoffs or for individuals looking to enter the industry.

Speaking to The Game Business, Satvat said that “over 70%, and in some years 75%, of the layoffs have been in North America”.

He noted that while “overall employment in the industry has actually increased” since before the pandemic, developers working in the US have been facing noticeable cuts in their workforce – particularly in AAA studios.

As a result, Satvat has been recommending that “games people focus on looking for non-game roles” to secure a new job.

“I think of people like concentric circles,” he explained. “Are they one circle away from games? Or two circles? One circle away would be you were at Amazon in the studio, now you’re at Prime Video. Two circles would be even further away from that. We now have more placements for our community in non-games than in games.”

Satvat continued: “We know 85% of [people looking for game jobs] are going to have to find non-game jobs. So, it’s been a slow, empathetic process of trying to get people to understand that they simply have to look at other stuff. It’s just mathematically not possible otherwise. Not forever, but for some amount of time.”

Despite the uncertainty, Satvat is optimistic about the future of the industry – especially in co-development and ex-development.

“The games market is absolutely growing and has a lot of room to grow,” he said. “I really think it’s going to be the dominant interactive and entertainment medium of the next century, unless something significant changes.”

“I feel like it is easier than ever to self-start, to self-publish, to make your own game, to make your own mods, to learn what to do. Everything is growing, everything is more open, and people still love games, but it just takes a very different entrepreneurial skillset to take that on.”

Satvat concluded: “If what you’re looking for is the 20-year, AAA standard functional gig in one location, that’s going to be an expectation set that’s hard to meet increasingly and may disappoint.

“But I feel like if you go into it open, it’s still very, very tough, but there are opportunities that didn’t exist before.”
