FromSoft acknowledges issues with Elden Ring Nightreign matchmaking

by admin May 31, 2025

If you’re jumping into Elden Ring Nightreign this weekend and are struggling to find a Player 2 – and/or a Player 3 – you’re not alone.

In a brief statement posted to official Elden Ring social media accounts about an hour ago (Saturday, 31st May), developer FromSoftware is recommending players “restart the matchmaking process” if they’re struggling to find a co-op partner.

“Nightfarers. If you encounter issues finding other players when launching an expedition in Elden Ring Nightreign, please try restarting the matchmaking process,” the brief message suggested. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Nightfarers,

If you encounter issues finding other players when launching an expedition in #ELDENRING #NIGHTREIGN, please try restarting the matchmaking process.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

It may not quite fix the issue for all players, however; as one commenter asked in the replies: “How often am I supposed to restart it? Yesterday I spend [sic] several hours restarting it on PS5 to not even play one match…”

Finding a co-op partner is pretty important for Nightreign players. As Ed wrote yesterday, he wouldn’t recommend Nightreign as a solo game at this point as it’s clearly not the intended way to play. However, it seems FromSoftware is aiming to respond to the current backlash to make solo play more feasible, with the studio previously stated it was considering a two-player option post-launch, acknowledging it was “something that was overlooked during development”.

“FromSoftware’s multiplayer spin-off is an exhilarating rush and a celebration of the studio’s prior achievements Souls veterans will devour,” Ed wrote in our Elden Ring Nightreign review.

The FromSoftware aesthetic is best summed up by the famous quote from Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki. When presented with an early, gross and gribbly design for the Undead Dragon in Dark Souls, Miyazaki returned it with the comment that it should be more dignified, saying, “Can’t you instead try to convey the deep sorrow of a magnificent beast doomed to a slow and possibly endless descent into ruin?'”

At some point behind the scenes there must have been a meeting about how to soundtrack the launch trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign. And that meeting ended by deciding that what the majestic ruin of the Lands Between needed was the song you’d hear in a mid-2000s AMV where someone edits all their favorite clips from Berserk together.

Yes, the Elden Ring Nightreign trailer is backed by Bring Me to Life by Evanescence, a slice of crossover nu-metal coming at you direct from 2003. Back then this song was pretty cringeworthy, which is what we said instead of just “cringe” at the time, but like everything you’re embarrassed by, 20 years later you hear it at a retro night and suddenly realize it rules actually.

Bandai Namco does have form here, having released a trailer for Dark Souls soundtracked by folk-rock band The Silent Comedy. In an age of ultra-polished trailers backed by slowed-down cover versions it’s kind of nice to see something a bit more amateurish? When the three heroes do their slow walk into battle during a quiet bit in Bring Me to Life it definitely has a “me and my friends made this” feel that’s appreciated in a game that will ultimately come down to you and your friends working together.

In his review of Elden Ring Nightreign, Tyler Colp recalled that “Everyone cheered in voice chat when Centipede Demon, the boss nobody remembers from Dark Souls, showed up to get obliterated by 14 years of action RPG combat advancement. When the stars align—and they will—Nightreign is unlike anything else I’ve played.” He gave it a score of 80, and though he had plenty to say about its impenetrability and messiness, he also clearly had a good time.

Just like I will, singing “save me from the nothing I’ve become” at my desk for the rest of the day.

Elden Ring Nightreign director says Fromsoft “kind of overlooked and neglected” playing as a duo, but 2 player-friendly “post-launch support” is being considered

by admin May 24, 2025

Elden Ring Nightreign’s director says that while FromSoft prioritised getting the three-player and solo experiences the game offers just right for launch, folks who prefer to take on the challenges of the night as a pair might be getting some duos-focused “post-launch support”.

You can play Nightreign as a duo right out of the gate, provided you don’t mind being matched up with a random third wheel to make up your team, much in the same way anyone playing solo will end up with two strangers that gaming law dictates will either be unbelievably skilled or utterly hopeless.

Speaking to IGN, Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki was asked why the game doesn’t have an option for a duo to drop right into a game as a twosome if they wish.

“The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we’re very sorry about that,” Ishizaki re-iterating that trios play the game’s three person teams naturally facilitate and solo play were the two options that it made most sense for the studio to focus on from the get go, especially when it came to balancing.

“We did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed,” he explained, “So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.”

It makes sense. Trios action is “at the core of Nightreign”, so that’s gotta be the main focus, and FromSoft games are famous for letting you solo bosses, so to cater to the usual single-player crowd playing by yourself has to be a priority in terms of striking a difficulty balance that’s in the Godskin Goldilocks zone. You’ve only got finite time and resources, so the couples take a backseat.

Ishizaki outlined the sort of work that’s gone into making sure the game for individual players a bit further on in the interview, explaining: “Solo play is generally encouraged and is a natural part of the game loop, but also in general for those solo players — and this might be something that’s difficult to notice in multiplayer — but the activeness and aggressiveness of enemies towards any one single player has been adjusted so that you don’t find yourself in any unreasonable multi-foe fights. And just generally, when you’re playing single player, the parameters adjust dynamically depending on the number of players in that session.”

If you want a picture of what the Nightreign playing experience is like, make sure to read our hands-on preview from earlier this year. Also, it’s now been confirmed that an Elden Ring movie is in the works.
