Crypto User Attacked In France Over Ledger Hardware Wallet

by admin June 20, 2025

France has reportedly seen another incident targeting cryptocurrency users, this time involving the kidnapping of a 23-year-old man in a Paris suburb.

According to a Thursday report from French news outlet Le Parisien, the victim was abducted in Maisons-Alfort and held captive for several hours while the perpetrators demanded his partner to turn over 5,000 euros ($5,764) in cash, along with the key to a Ledger hardware wallet containing an unreported amount of crypto.

The report suggested that the criminals used violence to extract information regarding his digital assets.

The unnamed man was reportedly held captive on Tuesday before being released in the town of Créteil. As of Thursday, authorities had not reported that any arrests had been made in the case.

The alleged kidnapping and ransom incident was the latest in a series of crimes involving individuals targeting people for their crypto holdings, with some cases reportedly involving torture for access to seed phrases or keys. In one high-profile case in May, three men tried to kidnap the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, the co-founder and CEO of crypto exchange Paymium.

Worldwide problem for crypto holders

The cases, sometimes referred to as “wrench attacks,” are not limited to France. In New York, two individuals were indicted for kidnapping and false imprisonment of a tourist to allegedly gain access to his crypto wallet. News outlets in India, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Spain have released similar stories involving the kidnapping and ransom of crypto holders in the last five years.

Jameson Lopp, an early Bitcoin (BTC) adopter, cypherpunk, and co-founder of BTC custody company Casa, reported 232 physical attacks on crypto holders in the last 11 years. Hal Finney, a computer scientist and the recipient of the first-ever BTC transaction, was “swatted” — had a SWAT team sent to his home — in 2014 after individuals threatened to expose his personal information if he didn’t hand over a crypto ransom.

Pornhub Back Online in France After Court Ruling About Age Verification

by admin June 20, 2025

Many porn sites, including Pornhub, YouPorn, and RedTube, all went dark earlier this month in France to protest a new age verification law that would have required the websites to collect ID from users. But those sites went back online Friday after a new ruling from a French court suspended enforcement of the law until it can be determined whether it conflicts with existing European Union rules, according to France24.

Aylo, the company that owns Pornhub, has previously said that requiring age verification “creates an unacceptable security risk” and warned that setting up that kind of process makes people vulnerable to hacks and leaks of sensitive information. The French law would’ve required Aylo to verify user ages with a government-issued ID or a credit card.

The company favors age verification methods that are done by large tech companies like Microsoft and Apple at the device level and told France24 that the suspension of the law is an “opportunity to reconsider more efficient approaches” for age verification. The government of France plans to appeal the suspension of the law to the Council of State, the highest administrative court in the country, according to France24.

France is Pornhub’s second largest market behind the U.S., according to the company’s own figures. The Philippines, Mexico, and the United Kingdom make up the rest of the top five countries that visit Pornhub by traffic. Pornhub didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Age verification laws for porn websites has been a controversial issue globally, with the U.S. seeing a dramatic uptick in states passing such laws in recent years. Nineteen states now have laws that require age verification for porn sites, meaning that anyone who wants to access Pornhub in places like Florida and Texas need to use a VPN.

Australia recently passed a law banning social media use for anyone under the age of 16, regardless of explicit content, which is currently making its way through the expected challenges. The law had a 12-month buffer built in to allow the country’s internet safety regulator to figure out how to implement it. Tech giants like Meta and TikTok were dealt a blow on Friday after the commission issued a report stating that age verification “can be private, robust and effective,” though trials are ongoing about how to best make the law work, according to ABC News in Australia.

Telegram Boss Pavel Durov Temporarily Permitted to Leave France: Report

by admin June 19, 2025

In brief

  • Telegram co-founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in France last year.
  • Authorities allege illegal material was being shared on the crypto-friendly app.
  • Durov will be allowed to travel to Dubai for just two weeks.

Embattled Telegram co-founder and CEO Pavel Durov may leave France to travel to Dubai, according to a Thursday report in the French daily Le Monde.

Durov, who was arrested in France last year on allegations his crypto-friendly platform was complicit in allowing illegal material to be shared on the app, will be able to leave the country starting July 10. It is the second time he has received such permission since being detained.

In April, French authorities allowed Durov to briefly travel to Dubai—but not to the United States. Telegram’s offices are headquartered in Dubai. Durov had to pay a €5 million ($5.7 million) bond and report to the authorities twice a week as part of the deal at the time.

Telegram could not immediately be reached for comment.

French police allege that criminals have been using the app and that Telegram was not doing enough to moderate content on it.

They have also said that Durov was under investigation for using certain types of cryptography on the platform in the country without permission.

The app has changed some of its functions since Durov has been cooperating with the authorities following his arrest. Users who now try to share illegal content could have their IP addresses and phone numbers passed to authorities, the app announced last year.

Russian-born Durov, who is worth $13.9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index, frequently talks about civil liberties and the importance of freedom.

His arrest last year outraged many in the crypto community—and many out of it—with prominent figures like whistleblower Edward Snowden and Tesla boss Elon Musk criticizing the French law enforcement’s move.

Messaging app Telegram is popular in the crypto world, and supports a number of “mini apps” that allow users to earn digital tokens.

A top blockchain, The Open Network, was created by Telegram but then abandoned in 2020 due to regulatory issues.

Development then continued externally via a community of independent programmers. Users can earn its native token, TON, the 21st biggest cryptocurrency by market cap, in the app.

VPN Usage Spikes in France as Pornhub Blocks Users Over Age Restrictions

by admin June 6, 2025

In brief

  • ProtonVPN reported a 1,000% surge in signups within 30 minutes when French users sought to bypass new, countrywide age restrictions for porn.
  • Both Proton and Pornhub criticized the law, warning that mandatory ID collection by third-party or offshore sites could create dangerous repositories of sensitive personal data.

French Pornhub users rushed to ProtonVPN this week after the adult site blocked access from France in protest of new government-mandated age verification rules, the company said, claiming that signups for the service surged 1,000% in just 30 minutes.

ProtonVPN is part of a suite of privacy tools developed by Proton AG, a Switzerland-based company best known for its encrypted email service, ProtonMail.

While ProtonVPN reported a 1,000% surge in French signups this week, it didn’t disclose the number of users it had in the country before the spike, making the figure difficult to interpret.

Still, ProtonVPN ranks among the more widely used VPNs worldwide.

According to Appfigures, it was downloaded 3 million times on Google Play in May, with an estimated 620,000 additional downloads via the Apple App Store.

By comparison, NordVPN saw about 1.7 million downloads across both platforms, and ExpressVPN totaled around 690,000.

Proton acknowledged the surge and voiced concern about the broader implications of mandatory age verification laws—and the unintended ways virtual private networks, better known as VPNs, are being used to circumvent them.

“We built Proton VPN to help people in authoritarian countries bypass online censorship. An access gateway for porn was obviously not what we had in mind,” a Proton spokesperson told Decrypt. “But VPNs can be used this way, and signups from France have temporarily increased by a factor of ten.”

Virtual private networks encrypt internet traffic and mask IP addresses, allowing users to browse privately and access region-restricted content.

The decision to block access to Pornhub followed a French law enacted in May 2024, requiring adult websites to verify users’ ages—a measure Pornhub’s parent company, Aylo, criticized as futile.

The company argued that the rules made French citizens more vulnerable to data theft and illicit content, while failing to protect children, a sentiment echoed by Proton.

“We believe the age verification approach is not the best way of restricting children’s access to illicit content,” the Proton spokesperson wrote. “There’s no such thing as age verification for children only; it’s age verification for everyone.”

Proton said that allowing offshore porn sites or other third parties to collect IDs from adults creates a central repository of sensitive information, which carries serious risks of blackmail and data misuse.

Attempting to access Pornhub from France, users were met with a declaration from the company lambasting the French government’s actions.

Instead of website-level age verification, Aylo and Proton support device-level verification as a more effective solution.

“All it requires is that the government enforce regulations on three companies–Apple, Google, and Microsoft–the three operating system manufacturers requiring age verification at the device level prior to accessing adult content,” Aylo said in a statement.

Digital restrictions have repeatedly driven users to adopt alternative technologies.

In December 2020, major credit card companies—including Mastercard, Visa and Discover—blocked payments to Pornhub after a New York Times investigation alleged the site hosted illegal content, including child abuse and nonconsensual videos.

Mastercard permanently ended its relationship with the platform, while Visa suspended payments pending further review. In response to its payment services being cut, Pornhub began accepting cryptocurrency for its premium subscription service.

The surge in VPN signups marked another front in the ongoing battle over anonymous access to adult content.

Lawmakers are increasingly turning to age verification laws to shield children from explicit material.

Other countries enacting these measures include the United Kingdom and Germany. In the U.S., 19 states—including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, and Texas have enacted age-verification measures in recent years.
