One of last year’s best Metroidvanias, Nine Sols, currently has an entirely different first-person horror game tucked inside its Steam betas

Look, I know we’re all playing Silksong, but if I could direct your attention to a slightly different Metroidvania for a moment—Nine Sols, Red Candle’s first and only action foray, was one of my favourite videogames from 2024, period. Contributor Abbie Stone waxed lyrical about it back in June of that year, but for some baffling reason I didn’t get Yi-pilled until May. We all make mistakes.

Something weird is happening with it, though: At the time of writing, if you have Nine Sols installed and enter “shanhaiarchive” into its beta tab (found in Steam’s properties) you can download and play an entirely separate game. Unfortunately, I have a frail constitution that makes me deathly allergic to jumpscares (or ‘a coward’, if you’re boring) so I’ll be showing you a playthrough shared to YouTube courtesy of Shadowking.

What I can provide is context. This entire ARG started back in September 10, with a video dubbed “Dark Legacy of the Sun Tribe” posted to the game’s YouTube channel. This official creepypasta is reminiscent of SCP informational videos, and asks viewers to inspect their hands to see if they might be descended from “the four-fingered ones.”

That’s a direct reference to Nine Sols’ characters. All of which, including the human-like “apemen”, have four fingers. The rest of the video follows an archaeologist following the traces of Xu Fu (a real-world alchemist and explorer) who lived in 255 BC, and didn’t return from his second jaunt to seek the Elixir of Life—which the video references.

I’m about to get into spoiler territory for Nine Sols, by the way: Choosing Xu Fu is super interesting, as most of the events of Nine Sols center around the Solarians attempting to find a cure for the Tianhuo virus. Including—and this relates to the ARG stuff shown above—an alternate reality called the Soulscape, where Solarians could rest as they tried to reverse their grim fate.

In Red Candle’s video, the archaeologist vanishes under mysterious circumstances, obsessed with an ancient city called Penglai—the name of the Solariian’s home planet from the game.

As for that hidden horror game, which tasks you with attempting to “save Yuuki Wu”, the architectural style is really familiar. It sees you waking up in what looks like a Solarian ruin. Notably, you’re a human with the right amount of fingers with modern clothes—however, completing it sees a screen that states “simulation complete, thank you for your computing power.”

Again, this is all Soulscape-adjacent. However, completing the game with your Steam name set to “Yuuki Wu” reveals, as spotted by the very same Shadowking on the game’s Reddit, an alternate ending.

In this one, you put on a Soulscape headset and are transported into a village as a four-fingered apeman in front of a similar temple—where Shadowking finds gravestones with the names “Kuafu” and “Shennong” written on them, two NPCs from Nine Sols. Eventually, you’re digitally shunted into another room, reaching out to a Mystic Nymph trapped in some kind of engine.

In the original game, the Mystic Nymph was a little scouting drone made by protagonist Yi, and given to Shuanshuan just before the game’s true ending, wherein the surviving apemen and Kuafu make it to a “Pale Blue Planet”—likely, as this ARG confirms, what would become our present-day Earth.

Oh and, lastly, there was a stream tallying up players’ scores to fill a progress bar, depicting someone (presumably Yuuki) lying on a hospital bed as the number went up. The stream was live for about 11 hours.

If I had to take a guess at what this all means, I’d wager that Yuuki is someone trapped in a Soulscape somehow—in the base Nine Sols games, being in a Soulscape for too long could drive you mad, or make you dependent on it—and they’re harvesting “computational power” from the brains of explorers in a bid to escape. In Nine Sols, this is why the Solarians had Apemen captive in a fake village, to harvest their brains for similar computational power.

As for why? Haven’t the foggiest, but if Red Candle Games is hinting at its next title, it may well be set in the Nine Sols universe. Whether the studio will make another banger sekiro-like or go back to its usual horror stylings, though? It’s hard to say. I’m personally hoping for the latter, because Nine Sols has some of my favourite brawls in the genre.

Jump Space Price And Update Roadmap Revealed, Including Melee Weapons And First-Person

Jump Space is almost ready to exit space port and enter early access. Ahead of the game’s debut later this month, Keepsake Games has set the price for Jump Space and laid out the update calendar well into 2026.

On Bluesky, Keepsake announced that Jump Space’s early access release will be available for $20 on Xbox Series X|S and PC on September 19. Chapter 1: The Resistance Coalition will begin at the start of early access, with Chapter 2: Atira Strikes Back launching by early 2026. In a series of short updates in that time frame, Keepsake plans to introduce text chat, hangar vendors, a ship shield revamp, melee weapons, an expanded story, new missions, photo mode, and other additions.

In Q1 2026, Chapter 3: Secrets of the Telmari will bring support for a first-person mode, more sectors, a scanner revamp, voice chat, new enemies, and a ground boss into the game. There are plans for Chapter 4: Heart of Corruption before the game exits early access. However, there are no dates or concrete details about when that might occur.

Until fairly recently, this game was known as Jump Ship before the name was changed over trademark issues. Jump Space is a co-op game that brings together up to four players as the crew of a ship that can control and repair their shared vessel. The gameplay resembles Left 4 Dead and Sea of Thieves, with some additional sci-touches touches like planetary exploration and space walks. It’s a dangerous galaxy out there, and players will run into trouble when enemies appear during on-foot encounters or during space combat when the crew is still on their ship. However, the game is strictly PvE, rather than PvP.

Keepsake Games has previously mentioned that Jump Space will feature several “handcrafted missions with random elements” to keep the game fresh. More than 1 million players have wishlisted Jump Space on Steam. For now, the game will only be available on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

If you saw Ruiner and thought it would be cool in first-person, its developer is back with, you guessed it, an FPS

There’s one round little chubster robot with an exposed core, so I yank it out of his chest and he drops immediately. I could throw it like a grenade, but instead I absorb it to earn a brief superpunch power-up that I use to launch myself at one of the heavier-armored robots, bashing the metal plates right off him. While I’m up close and he’s staggered I switch to shotgun to finish him off, then jetpack away. There’s a bunch more robot enemies in this arena, and I saw some ammo up on the wallrun I could reach while I wait for the core-yanking ability to come back online.

This is a fairly typical five seconds of Metal Eden, a superspeed neon FPS where you’re a parkour android with a big bag of tools for movement and for destruction. There’s a grappling hook and double-jump, a freezy grenade, and a morph ball mode right out of Super Metroid that lets you roll around flinging homing missiles and lightning.

Staggering enemies with a punch before finishing them off guarantees they’ll drop health, while throwing a core at them ensures they’ll drop ammo. If you were detecting a hint of the Bethesda Dooms about Metal Eden you’re spot on. There’s also a fair chunk of Ruiner, developer Reikon’s previous adrenaline-pumper. But where that had a birdseye view and cyberpunk flair, Metal Eden is a sci-fi movement shooter about rescuing digitized colonists who’ve been imprisoned for extremely nebulous reasons by a coalition of drones and robots who are even less human than the Bubblegum Crisis cosplayer who is Metal Eden’s android protagonist.

What it really reminds me of is Necromunda: Hired Gun, an under-rated movement-shooter that drowned you in abilities like wallrunning and grapple-hooking and slow-mo, which made for frenetic action when you remembered to use them all but could also be a bit overwhelming if you didn’t play for a few days and then tried to remember what the controls were.

The story is likewise overwhelming, with a bitter computer named Nexus as the main narrator and a lot of stylish but wilfully confusing flashbacks. It’s a little like Ruiner that way, only where Ruiner made sense in the end, when I hit the credits six or seven hours into Metal Eden I was even more confused than when I started.

Which wouldn’t be as much of a problem if there weren’t so much story, constantly being monologued at you mid-level when you’d rather be shooting dudes. Metal Eden paces out its mostly linear levels with zipline rides past futuristic tower blocks while Nexus drones on, and occasionally some actual drones appear to shoot at you in case you’re getting bored. While I was playing Metal Eden the first time I couldn’t help but think how dull those segments would be on the replay, and the same with the lingering introductions of each new gun and blank-faced robotic enemy.

And while they are annoying on my second time through these levels, I’m surprised to find an even bigger annoyance. There’s no New Game+ mode for finally cutting loose with all the unlockable abilities, weapons, and upgrades. Instead, when you select a level from the post-game menu you load in with whatever minimal loadout you had the first time, back to square one. In a genre I’d expect to be all about the replay—the speedrun, the showboat second playthrough where you get to demonstrate all the skills you developed the first time—Metal Eden instead feels like a game that wants you to put it down and move on the second you roll credits. Which makes the $40 price a bit harder to swallow.

If they patch in a New Game+ mode though, Metal Eden will be an easier recommendation for adrenaline junkies who get off on wallrunning around arenas shooting plasma at giant spiderbots.

‘Wilder World’ Launches First-Person Shooter Game With $100K Tournament

  • This shooter represents the second release in Wilder World’s broader metaverse vision targeting early 2026, which will include racing, combat, mining, concerts, and other experiences.

Wilder World launched a high-intensity shooter game mode into “super early access” at the annual Gamescom conference on Wednesday.

The Ethereum-based project aims to create a broad metaverse of gaming experiences, which kick-started last year with the launch of the racing game Wilder Wheels in partnership with Lamborghini.

The PC-based shooter is a 10-player free-for-all deathmatch that blends first and third-person perspectives. Available on Epic Games Store, each match will last for 10 minutes, with players earning points as they battle in a fragment of Wiami—which is a 1:1 recreation of Miami, and the future foundation of its open-world metaverse. Gamescom attendees will also be able to claim Samsung-branded playable NFTs.

To celebrate the launch of the game, Wilder Worlds is hosting a $100,000 tournament with qualifiers running from August 25 to September 9, before a round of playoffs and finally an in-person final at an undisclosed location on September 24. The five players who qualify will be flown out to the final, all expenses paid.

Wilder World’s shooter game mode comes as the second release in its broader metaverse vision, which is targeting an early 2026 rollout.



Pseudonymous co-founder and Executive Producer n3o told Decrypt that the full game will include “racing, combat, resource mining, exploration, concerts, art galleries, and branded cultural experiences” that “coexist within a living, player-driven economy.”

“Launching individual modes first allows us to refine gameplay mechanics at a world-class level before bringing everything together into the open world,” they added.

The project launched an Ethereum token in 2021 and approximately six months later set its all-time high of $7.44, according to CoinGecko. Wilder World said that the launch of WILD was “foundational” to building the game, as it raised over $30 million to fund development. Over the past month, WILD has climbed 37% to about $0.40, but still remains down nearly 95% from its peak price.

“Think of [Wilder World] as the world’s first truly living digital city—where you can race, fight, build, trade, attend a concert, showcase your art, or launch your own brand.” n3o told Decrypt. “We are targeting early 2026 for the full open-world release, with Super Early Access modes like racing and FPS serving as the foundation that evolves into this broader vision.”

Not content with making three WW1 first-person shooters already, the creators of Verdun and Isonzo are now making a Gallipoli FPS

BlackMill Games has been making World War 1 shooters for over a decade now, first with Verdun, and then with Tannenberg and Isonzo. Now it’s making Gallipoli, which will shift focus to the Middle Eastern theatre, to dramatize the battles between the Triple Entente and the Ottoman Empire.

While it’s not as well-known as other WW1 campaigns, the landing at the Gallipoli Peninsula, and the ensuing long stalemate, was an especially bloody encounter. Over ten thousand members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps were killed during the campaign, which is commemorated annually on ANZAC Day in Australia and New Zealand.

For what it’s worth, the only other modern videogame depiction of the campaign is in the Battlefield 1 mission The Runner (which itself seems to borrow heavily from Peter Weir’s 1981 film Gallipoli).

The move east promises to make BlackMill’s fourth WW1 game a little more varied: according to its Steam page it’ll traverse “coastal dunes, dry deserts, urban areas and more”. In addition to the Gallipoli campaign it’ll also move further east to take in the Mesopotamian campaign, which reached as far as modern day Iraq. Players will side with either the Ottoman Empire or the Entente (BlackMill specifies “the British”).

As before, Gallipoli is a squad-based shooter heavily focused on choosing a class and sticking with it: If you’re the stretcher bearer, you better not be caught sprinting across no man’s land to increase your KD ratio. Public matches will be populated with AI bots to accurately convey the sense of scale, though these can be toggled off in custom matches.

It’s due to hit Steam some time in 2026, and the reveal trailer is below.
