Walmart-Linked Fintech Expands Into Digital Assets

OnePay, the fintech linked to Walmart, plans to add crypto trading to its mobile banking app later in 2025, according to multiple reports. Sources told news outlets that users will be able to buy, sell and hold Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) inside the app, a move that would expand OnePay’s lineup of financial services beyond savings and cards.

OnePay To Add Crypto Trading

Reports have disclosed that the crypto functions will be powered through a tie-up with Zerohash, a firm that provides custody and settlement services for digital assets. That suggests OnePay will rely on outside infrastructure rather than build all systems itself.

OnePay was launched in 2021 and is majority owned by Walmart, with early backing from Ribbit Capital, and the company has been steadily rolling out banking features since then.

Partnerships And Product Plans

OnePay is working with Synchrony to relaunch Walmart’s credit card offerings, and Reuters reported a Synchrony announcement dated June 9, 2025, about card programs set to return this fall.

The app also aims to offer savings accounts and buy-now, pay-later options alongside the new crypto window. Users may be given the ability to convert crypto to fiat and then use those funds for purchases in Walmart stores or to pay card balances, though the exact mechanics have not been fully detailed by company spokespeople.

How Much Will Users Get Access To At First?

Several outlets suggest OnePay will start with the two largest tokens, BTC and ETH, rather than a long list of coins. Limits, fees and state availability were not disclosed in the reports, and those details could change before any public launch.

Sources said the rollout is expected sometime later in 2025, with the credit card program arriving in fall 2025, but no firm launch date for crypto trading has been announced.

Regulatory Hurdles And Timing

Regulators at the state and federal level are actively watching crypto offerings from consumer apps, and compliance requirements could shape how quickly OnePay moves.

Based On reports, the company has not publicly filed detailed disclosures tied to the crypto service, and both Walmart and OnePay declined to comment to reporters. That leaves open the possibility of a phased release, restricted to certain users or states at first.

What This Means For Shoppers And Users

If the plan proceeds, Walmart customers who already use OnePay could gain another way to access BTC and ETH without signing up for a separate crypto exchange.

Analysts and users will be watching fees, protections for deposits, and whether the app allows spending crypto directly in stores or requires conversion first.

Y Combinator, Base and Coinbase Ventures Launch ‘Fintech 3.0’ as Finance Goes On-Chain

by admin September 24, 2025

Y Combinator, the Silicon Valley startup incubator behind Airbnb, Coinbase and Stripe, is collaborating with Base and Coinbase Ventures to create the next wave of so-called “Fintech 3.0” companies, according to a blog post on Tuesday.

The firms have opened applications to these “Fintech 3.0” companies, saying it is looking for themes such as expanding stablecoins beyond the dollar into local currencies, tokenizing assets such as stocks and credit markets and building consumer-facing applications including AI-driven financial agents.

This is part of these companies’ continuing efforts to move the financial industry on-chain. A prime example of this is Base, the Ethereum overlay blockchain attached to Coinbase which recently partnered with Shopify to offer global USDC payments.

“Our mission at Base is to build a global economy that increases innovation, creativity, and freedom. To do this, we need more founders to build on-chain businesses so that anyone, anywhere can participate in the global economy,” the blog post said.

The initiative comes as U.S. lawmakers move to clarify rules for crypto. The GENIUS Act, a new U.S. law governing stablecoins, aims to bring federal clarity by directing regulators to come up with specific rules for stablecoin issuers. U.S. lawmakers continue to work on broader crypto market structure legislation as well.

Fintech Rain Raises $58 Million to Fuel Stablecoin Push on Visa Network

by admin August 30, 2025

In brief

  • Stablecoin fintech Rain has raised $58 million.
  • The Visa-backed company, which issues cards, has raised a total of $88.5 million from big backers like Sapphire Ventures, Dragonfly, Galaxy Ventures, and Samsung Next.
  • Stablecoins are a hot topic since President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act.

Stablecoin-backed card company Rain, which partnered with Visa this year, has raised $58 million as part of a series B funding round, the company said in an announcement Thursday.

The raise brings the company’s total funding to $88.5 million. Rain, which closed its A round five months ago, said the money would be used to grow the firm’s platform and “give global institutions the most flexible, modular, and compliant stablecoin infrastructure available.”

Venture capital firm Sapphire Ventures led the funding round, with Dragonfly, Galaxy Ventures, Endeavor Catalyst, Samsung Next, Lightspeed, and Norwest also contributing.

“Stablecoins are shifting to the backbone of global commerce,” Rain CEO and co-founder Farooq Malik said. “In its earliest form, money moved instantly. We’ve spent centuries slowing it down.”

Rain this year partnered with Visa to push ahead with its stablecoin-linked cards.

In the release, Rain said that is intent on making stablecoins “instantly usable anywhere Visa is accepted through its physical and virtual card programs, processing millions of transactions across 150+ countries.”

The company said that it had grown transaction volume by tenfold this year with such portfolio partners as Nuvei, Avalanche, Dakota, and Nomad using Rain infrastructure for merchant payouts, everyday consumer purchases, B2B spend, and cross-border payroll.

Visa has been making major inroads into the crypto space, particularly with stablecoins. In April, it partnered with Bridge, a unit of payment services provider Stripe, to offer stablecoin-linked debit cards in Latin American countries. In 2021, it announced that it supported USDC on Ethereum.

Stablecoins are digital tokens running on blockchains that are pegged to non-volatile assets, usually dollars. With a stable value, such cryptocurrencies were previously used by traders to enter and exit digital asset trades without the need for banks.

But now, banks, major companies, including Meta and Amazon, and even U.S. states are all interested in issuing the tokens, which are supposed to accelerate payments leveraging blockchain technology.

U.S. President Donald Trump in July signed the GENIUS Act into law, establishing a framework for issuing and trading stablecoins in the U.S.

“Stablecoins have scaled to hundreds of billions in circulation, but until now, they couldn’t be easily spent,” said Sapphire Ventures President Jai Das, who will join Rain’s board. “Rain is working to fix that by connecting stablecoins to Visa’s global network, turning them into money you can actually use for everyday commerce.”
