Researchers Find Strange Link Between Marathon Running and Cancer

by admin August 19, 2025

Some of the most physically fit people in the world may have a unique health risk. New research uncovers a possible link between marathon running and colorectal cancer.

Oncologists at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Virginia conducted the study, which examined the colons of relatively young people who had run several long-distance races. They found these runners had a much higher rate of having potentially dangerous adenomas (a type of polyp) than would be expected for their age. Though the findings are preliminary and require more confirmation, they may point to a real connection between colorectal cancer and extreme physical activity.

“It tells us there’s a signal here,” David Lieberman, a gastroenterologist and professor emeritus at Oregon Health and Science University not affiliated with the study, told the New York Times Tuesday. “We wouldn’t have expected these rates of high-risk adenomas, which are cancer precursor lesions, in an age group like this.”

A mysterious trend

Lead researcher Timothy Cannon was inspired to perform the study after he treated three young patients with colorectal cancer, all of whom had run ultramarathons (defined as any race longer than 26.2 miles). Not only were his patients fit, but they were also much younger than the typical case, the oldest being 40.

In 2022, Cannon and his colleagues began recruiting endurance athletes for their prospective study. The volunteers had all run at least two ultramarathons or five regular marathons; they also had no family history of colorectal cancer or other apparent risk factors. All told, 100 athletes between the ages of 35 and 50 took part and were given colonoscopies.

The researchers went looking for advanced adenomas in the colons of their volunteers, relatively large or otherwise unusual polyps. Though these growths are themselves benign, they have a higher risk of turning cancerous than other polyps. Then they compared the rate of finding these polyps in their athletes to historical trends.

About 1.2% of people in their 40s at average risk for colorectal cancer would be expected to have advanced adenomas, according to the researchers. By sharp contrast, 15% of the runners they studied had them, while nearly half had polyps in general.

“Consideration of refined screening strategies for this population is warranted,” the researchers wrote in their study.

Much left to understand

The team presented its results earlier this year at the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. That means this study hasn’t yet undergone the formal peer-review process. The authors are also quick to note their work isn’t definitive proof that endurance running can cause colorectal cancer.

Assuming this link is causative, there remains the burning question of why. As even weekend 5k joggers will know, running can occasionally trigger bouts of gastrointestinal distress (the namesake runner’s diarrhea). These injuries are sometimes caused by temporarily restricted blood flow to the intestines that damages nearby cells. It’s possible, the researchers speculate, that extreme runners who regularly experience this blood flow loss can develop the sort of chronic inflammation that makes cancer more likely to emerge.

At this point, though, that’s only one hypothesis for what may be happening here. The researchers say future studies should try to confirm their findings as well as untangle the causes and risk factors that could explain this potential higher risk.

All that said, this research shouldn’t scare anyone away from running or any other form of cardio. The many health benefits of regular physical activity—which importantly include a lower risk of at least eight different types of cancer—still far outweigh the risks for the average person.

How To Find The Thieves Den

by admin June 25, 2025

Who doesn’t love free player housing? If you’re a thief, any of the city’s homes will suffice as a temporary base of operations. But none of them come with a Fence (albeit for a small sum of 1,000 Gold). You know what does? The Thieves Den in Oblivion Remastered! It’s a DLC player home packaged with the remaster that offers money-making opportunities and a home away from home when you need to branch out on your own away from the Thieves Guild. Here’s where to find it and claim it as yours!

What Is Dragonsplague? Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Devastating Contagion Explained

How to find the Thieves Den

Screenshot: Bethesda / Brandon Morgan / Kotaku

Like most optional content and side quests in Oblivion Remastered, you’re most likely to first discover the Thieves Den—a DLC player house that’s included as part of the remaster by hearing a rumor from random NPCs. Of course, exploration helps, too. But that said, this is more than a simple player house. It’s a money-making machine for the right type of playstyle—specifically a thief or pirate-type—and with the appropriate upgrades, it even features a bonafide Fence, Spymaster, and a personal Fletcher for you stealth archer types out there.

Read More: Three Essential Things Oblivion Remastered Doesn’t Tell You

For now, let’s focus on finding the player house. It’s located southeast of Anvil. On the map, it appears as Dunbarrow Cave, but there’s a problem. The cave icon is on the wrong hill. If you follow the in-game map precisely, you’ll wind up in the wrong location. Instead, head to said location, then turn back toward the Anvil castle to the north. You’ll note a little cove between the castle and a rocky outcropping. There, beneath the castle walls, is a wooden door.

Screenshot: Bethesda / Brandon Morgan / Kotaku

The cave beyond the door isn’t overly confusing or labyrinthian. Follow the lights until you find the door leading to Smuggler’s Cave. Inside, you’re greeted by an expansive cavern filled with little campsites and a broken pirate ship. But worse, there are skeletons. They’re tough, depending on your level. Plus, there’s the captain inside the Captain’s Quarters to contend with.

Screenshot: Bethesda / Brandon Morgan / Kotaku

You’re most likely a thief or archer class, considering your desire to claim the Thieves Den, so use that bow or a hard-hitting dagger while kiting the skeletons. You can bunch them up on the bridges, or use the boxes leading down to the main section of the ship in the center of the room to funnel them towards you for easy mob management.

Once you’ve finished with the captain, read through his four diaries on the floor. They’ll explain all you need to know about restoring the cavern to its former pirate-laden glory!

How to upgrade the Thieves Den

Screenshot: Bethesda / Brandon Morgan / Kotaku

There are only a handful of upgrades available from Dahlia Rackham, at The Sea Tub Clarabella—a merchant ship docked at the Anvil port.

  • Supplier (1,000 Gold)
  • Security Expert (1,000 Gold)
  • Fence (1,000 Gold)
  • Fletcher (1,000 Gold)
  • Spymaster (1,000 Gold)
  • Upgrade Player Quarters (500 Gold)

You’ll note there aren’t as many upgrade options for the Thieves Den as there are those available for the Fighters’ Stronghold. Here, you can spend just under 6,000 gold—a modest sum for any adventurer or thief—and wind up with a fully furnished pirate den that’ll make you money with each passing day. But perhaps the biggest boon is its Fence. How many times must you track down a viable fence to sell your stolen goods? It’s a pain. But now, you’ll have your own at the Thieves Den!

Oh, and don’t forget to grab the Smuggler’s Key within the Captain’s Quarters. It’ll open a secret passage connecting the Smuggler’s Cave to Anvil Castle.

Oblivion Remastered is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PCs, and Game Pass.

‘The Phantom of the Paradise’ Might Find New Life as a Stage Play

by admin June 20, 2025

The Phantom of the Paradise, the vastly underrated horror-tinged rock opera from the minds of Brian De Palma (Carrie) and Paul Williams (The Muppet Movie), might be getting a new musical adaptation. Movie Maker reports that Williams and Sam Pressman, whose father Ed Pressman produced the 1974 cult film, are currently developing it as a stage production.

“I’m excited about having a chance to deliver what fans have been suggesting for years… POTP as a stage musical,” Williams said in a statement to MovieMaker. “I think its time has come!” American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis has been approached to pen it (please, no), but he’s not committed according to the report.

If you’ve never heard of The Phantom of the Paradise, get thee to a revival theater screening or rent it online—especially if you’re a Muppets fan. I know it seems weird to draw a line from “Rainbow Connection” and “no cheeses for us meeces” to a glam and gory ’70s riff on The Phantom of the Opera, but stay with me for a moment. Not only did the De Palma and Williams musical predate Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway take on the Gaston Leroux novel, but it inspired so many artists we know and love today. After its release Williams went on to become the Muppetational mind behind the music of The Muppet Movie and The Muppet Christmas Carol. Meanwhile, De Palma continued to genre hop from horror to mob movies and started the Mission: Impossible franchise.

The Phantom of the Paradise loosely adapts The Phantom of the Opera by way of Faust with a dash of The Picture of Dorian Gray but re-imagined into masterful musical mayhem. It follows a lowly composer named Winslow Leech who chases a deal with the devil in the form of music producer Swan, played by Williams in a tasty turn for the multi-hypenate. (He later also played the Penguin in Batman: The Animated Series.)

Thanks to his association with Death Records, Leech’s musical talents are ripped away and pressed just like his face into records that don’t give him credit for his songs. This includes the tunes that transform Leech’s crush Phoenix, the ingenue played by Jessica Harper (Suspiria), into a pop star. Vowing revenge he becomes the Phantom of the Paradise and violently haunts every artist Swan tries to give his music to, until they enter a deal that Leech’s music will only go to Phoenix. And from there things get real messy and bloody, but man, the needle drops are legendary.

So legendary that the film, much like its creative minds behind it, also inspired artists across mediums too. Guillermo del Toro is a vocal fan of the film and has been instrumental in making sure it stays in the horror zeitgeist. He even has one of the Phantom’s helmets in his Bleak House collection, which I totally didn’t imagine pulling a heist for at the LACMA when it was on display there.

The film has also become a touchstone for other musicians. One that really struck me personally was finding out that My Chemical Romance was heavily inspired by the film. I didn’t see it until I was an adult, which I deserve a shame circle for as a Phantom of the Opera Universal Monsters and original novel fan—but I knew MCR’s The Black Parade. The no-skips album is essentially a rock opera and it made total sense to find out Gerard Way was heavily influenced by Phantom in its creation. If anything, Way should write the book for Williams’ upcoming staging and star in it too.

Another act that’s come under Phantom‘s spell offers an even more fun realization: Daft Punk. Down to the helmets, aesthetic, and sound of the Phantom, that movie really gave us the greatest electronic duo to ever spin. Williams actually appeared on Random Access Memories track “Touch,” which sounds like it was yanked from a time machine as a Phantom of the Paradise B-side.

The Phantom of the Paradise was ahead of its time and the announcement of its stage musical  gives me hope it will find its audience. If they modernize it, I wouldn’t hate it because I see the vision. The themes are timeless even in our digital age where content creators with talent who try to build a following get ripped off by artificial influencers with clout. That can be very Leech/Phantom versus Swan-coded for sure. Williams is a stone cold legend and his music mastery is a gift that’s still giving—he headlined Coachella this year with Yo Gabba Gabba!

While the report mentioned De Palma has been approached about the staging, he’s not an announced part of it. “We certainly want Brian to feel honored,” Pressman said in the article. “I went to go see Brian last fall, to talk about the dream. Phantom was an early and significant film for him and I’d say the favorite film of my father in his career. I think the chaos and originality of the whole experience was deeply inspiring.”

‘Best Wishes to All’ Proves J-Horror Can Still Find New Ways to Freak You Out

by admin June 19, 2025

New Shudder release Best Wishes to All begins with a nightmare, and that sets the tone for everything that follows.

A nursing student, never given a name and played by the instantly sympathetic Kotone Furukawa, dreams she’s a child again visiting her grandparents—and wakes up screaming after spotting something deeply alarming beyond a cracked-open door. We soon realize this was really more of a flashback, in anticipation of what seems to be her first trip to their rural home since that happened.

And she’s going alone. “By myself?” she murmurs in dismay to her parents when they call to tell her they’ll be delayed in joining her. She’s reluctant, but she leaves her Tokyo apartment and heads to the train, where an elderly woman she helps cross the street layers in some thematic heft early in act one: “I’m sorry that young people are sacrificed for old folks like me.”

Our protagonist shakes the odd encounter off, but the weird vibes escalate even after what seems to be a perfectly pleasant family reunion… at least at first. It’s odd being back in the sleepy village, where neighbors—especially a young man she hasn’t seen in years—seem startled to see her stopping by from her current life in the big city. There’s a sense of unease clinging to every frame, and director and co-writer Yûta Shimotsu carefully sprinkles warning signs in such a way that neither the nurse nor the audience can tell if this is just “old people acting like old people” and “eccentric small-town stuff,” or something far more distressing.

There’s also the matter of that room from her nightmare, sealed behind the only locked door in the house.

© Shudder

Best Wishes to All has Takashi Shimizu among its producers, a name Japanese horror fans will instantly recognize. He created the Ju-On series, also known as The Grudge, and had such ownership of the franchise he even directed the American remake and its sequel. Along with The Ring, The Grudge was one of the breakout titles of the early 2000s J-horror craze, spawning terrors about cursed houses and wide-eyed ghosts with long black hair. His involvement in Best Wishes to All ties it into that tradition and also signals his support for the genre’s 21st century evolution—and this release certainly proves there are still agonizing new ways to reveal ghastly truths lurking within an ostensibly peaceful setting.

Like many standout horror movies, Best Wishes to All roots its frights in social commentary, though American audiences may have to poke around after viewing to understand the finer details of the cultural context. However, it also contains a more universal message about generational conflicts, as well as traditions that remain stubbornly in place despite seeming wildly out of step with the times.

If this review reads as frustratingly vague regarding exactly what the nurse uncovers at grandma and grandpa’s home—sorry, but Best Wishes to All is a movie best experienced with as little knowledge of its reveals as possible. It’s not entering spoiler turf to note that a movie that came to mind while watching it was Jordan Peele’s Us; there are no murderous doppelgangers here, but there’s a similar exploration of an awful truth that’s become completely entangled with the way the world operates.

And like the characters in Us, the nurse peels back a layer she can never put back in place. She’s forced to come to terms not just with what she learns about her own family, but so many other families too, as well as the knowledge that everyone else already has full awareness of something she’s been kept in the dark about. At one point, someone even jokingly asks her if she still believes in Santa Claus.

Best Wishes to All is decidedly bleak; instead of leaning into jump scares, it gets under your skin in more philosophical but no less dreadful ways. And it’s packed with body horror too—a creepy extra flourish in a movie whose characters are fixated on asking each other if they’re happy or not. They all say yes, but in a world like theirs, how can we believe them?

Best Wishes to All is streaming on Shudder.

Minnesota Shooting Suspect Allegedly Used Data Broker Sites to Find Targets’ Addresses

by admin June 17, 2025

The man who allegedly assassinated a Democratic Minnesota state representative, murdered her husband, and shot a state senator and his wife at their homes in a violent spree early Saturday morning may have gotten their addresses or other personal details from online data broker services, according to court documents.

Suspect Vance Boelter, 57, is accused of shooting Minnesota representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, in their home on Saturday. The couple died from their injuries. Authorities claim the suspect also shot state senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman in their home earlier that night. The pair are currently recovering and are “incredibly lucky to be alive,” according to a statement from their family.

According to an FBI affidavit, police searched the SUV believed to be the suspect’s and found notebooks that included handwritten lists of “more than 45 Minnesota state and federal public officials, including Representative Hortman’s, whose home address was written next to her name.” According to the same affidavit, one notebook also listed 11 mainstream search platforms for finding people’s home addresses and other personal information, like phone numbers and relatives.

The addresses for both lawmakers targeted on Saturday were readily available. Representative Hortman’s campaign website listed her home address, while Senator Hoffman’s appeared on his legislative webpage, The New York Times reports.

“Boelter stalked his victims like prey,” acting US attorney Joseph Thompson alleged at a press conference on Monday. “He researched his victims and their families. He used the internet and other tools to find their addresses and names, the names of their family members.” Thompson also alleged that the suspect surveilled victims’ homes.

The suspect faces several charges of second-degree murder.

Privacy and public safety advocates have long argued that the US should regulate data brokers to guarantee that people have better control over the sensitive information available about them. The US has no comprehensive data privacy legislation, and efforts to regulate data brokers from within federal agencies have largely been quashed.

“The accused Minneapolis assassin allegedly used data brokers as a key part of his plot to track down and murder Democratic lawmakers,” Ron Wyden, the US senator from Oregon, tells WIRED. “Congress doesn’t need any more proof that people are being killed based on data for sale to anyone with a credit card. Every single American’s safety is at risk until Congress cracks down on this sleazy industry.”

In many cases, basic information like home addresses can be found through public records, including voter registration data (which is public in some states) and political donations data, says Gary Warner, a longtime digital scams researcher and director of intelligence at the cybersecurity firm DarkTower. Anything that isn’t readily available through public records is almost always easy to find using popular “people search” services.

“Finding a home address, especially if someone has lived in the same place for many years is trivial,” Warner says. He adds that for “younger people, non-homeowners, and less political people, there are other favorite sites” for finding personal information.

For many in the general public as well as in politics, Saturday’s violent crime spree brings new urgency to the long-standing question of how to protect sensitive personal data online.

“These are not the first murders that have been abetted by the data broker industry. But most of the previous targets were relatively unknown victims of stalking and abuse,” alleges Evan Greer, deputy director of the digital rights group Fight for the Future. “Lawmakers need to act before they have more blood on their hands.”

Where To Find The Vile Lair

by admin June 16, 2025

Playing an infamous, blood-sucking character? Chances are you’ve been forced out of every major city in Cyrodiil by overzealous guards who see your fangs and red eyes and want to slaughter your vampire butt, right? Well, if that’s the case, where else can you hide? The Vile Lair, with its Dark Brotherhood-esque decorations and monuments to Sithis, feels like an extension of the assassin’s guild, but it’s definitely designed with creatures of the night in mind. Here’s where to find this unique player home!

A Hot-Fix Is On The Way For MindsEye’s Frustrating CPR Mini-Game

How to find and claim the Vile Lair in Oblivion Remastered

Screenshot: Bethesda / Brandon Morgan / Kotaku

Like with the Thieves’ Den and Fighters’ Stronghold, you’ll discover Vile Lair either through various rumors in the surrounding area, like from the citizens of Leyawiin, or via exploration. Whichever path you take, it’s quite the trek through Blackwood to uncover this hidden den of infamy.

You’ll find the Vile Lair southeast of Leyawiin, at the southernmost tip of Blackwood. There, you’ll note a small island connected via a thin strip on the map, and that’s your destination.

Upon arrival, however, you’ll find nothing more than a burnt out town, slaughtered by unknown forces, some of it still smoking. If you dig through the wreckage, you’ll find a few chests with basic random loot spawns. But look to the south to the crumbling stone structures: That’s your target. Dive into the water, then swim down to where the stone meets the slope leading to deeper water. You’ll find a large tree trunk, open on one end, leading to a hidden door.

Screenshot: Bethesda / Brandon Morgan / Kotaku

It’s murky down there, but I promise, the door’s there. Inside, you’ll swim momentarily, coming up to the surface in a small cave entrance that opens to none other than the Vile Lair.

Before you delve too deep, don’t forget to grab the journal sitting beneath the pearl on the stool by the water’s edge. It contains everything you must know about Vile Lair, including how to upgrade each room!

How to upgrade the Vile Lair

Oddly enough, if you wish to upgrade the Vile Lair—you most certainly do!—then you must travel to the opposite side of Cyrodiil. There’s a single merchant, Rowley Eardwulf, tucked away in the Wawnet Inn, just to the west across the bridge leading to the Imperial City. There, you’ll find a perpetually scowling man who is just an absolute delight to speak with. He’ll sell you the following Vile Lair upgrades:

Bedroom Area

  • Cost: 1,750 Gold
  • Description: A desk with various crafting ingredients and a coffin bed.

Cattle Cell

  • Cost: 1,750 Gold
  • Description: A prison cell, complete with prisoners, for vampire characters to feed on.

Dark Minion

  • Cost: 1,750 Gold)
  • Description: A vampire minion you may task with killing victims, increasing your infamy and acquiring their loot.

Dining Area

  • Cost: 1,750 Gold
  • Description: A table and cupboard setup with foods and better lighting.

Garden of Venomgrowth

  • Cost: 1,750 Gold
  • Description: A garden chock full of poisonous alchemy ingredients.
  • Ingredients Provided: Chokeberry Vines, Elf Cup Caps, Fennel Plants, Ginseng Plants, Milk Thistle Plants, Morning Glory Vines, Nightshade Plants, Stinkhorn Caps, Wisp Stalk Caps

Storage Area

  • Cost: 1,750 Gold
  • Description: Multiple storage chests just off the main garden, along with several pre-made poisons.

Study Area

  • Cost: 1,750 Gold
  • Description: A simple desk and bookshelf with rare and unique books for study.

Ichor of Sithis

  • Cost: 3,000 Gold
  • Description: A potion key to reactivate the Ichor Basin in Deepscorn Shrine that will, once rebuilt, confer blessings of Sithis.

Deepscorn Hollow is primarily tailored toward vampire players. While it will suffice for any Dark Brotherhood playthrough, the various upgrades and boons lean heavily toward those who remain in the shadows.

How To Destroy Anomalies And Find Planetary Samples In The Alters

by admin June 16, 2025

Are you looking for a way to destroy anomalies in The Alters? These odd and eerie objects can be found in various locations, and approaching them is extremely risky. However, some rewards await you if you’re curious and brave enough. Our guide has all the details to help you with this particular facet of the game.

How to destroy anomalies in The Alters – Anomalies, ALX, and Planetary Samples guide

You’ll start finding anomalies upon reaching the game’s first act. As you continue to explore the rocky crags and steep cliffsides, you’re bound to see strange phenomena in your surroundings. These objects appear as translucent, gaseous wisps that float in mid-air. However, the moment you approach them, Jan will start taking damage.

Types of anomalies

There are several types of anomalies in The Alters. The first type you’ll encounter are static. They don’t move from their spot, though you have to walk carefully to avoid them. Soon thereafter, you’ll come across anomalies that track you down, homing in on you before they explode and inflict irradiation.

Much later in the game, you’ll find even deadlier and more annoying anomalies. Some are even able to cause time dilation, which cna be a huge hassle when you’re trying to make the most out of your precious few hours on the surface.

Lastly, there’s an anomalous object known as an Interal. Compared to other anomalies, it has a bright greenish hue and it leads to a nifty reward.

Static anomalies are fairly easy to avoid since you can go through the gaps in between them.

How to craft the Luminator

When you first stumble upon an anomaly, you’ll be able to speak with Jan Scientist, who’s quite curious about these peculiar entities. Then, when you chance upon an Interal, you can talk to Jan Scientist once more. Doing so allows you to craft a Luminator, which requires 20x metals and 20x rapidium.

Talking to the Scientist unlocks a means of crafting the Luminator.

How to destroy anomalies to obtain ALX

The Luminator is essentially a flashlight that can eliminate anomalies in The Alters. If you’ve played the Alan Wake games before, then it’s akin to shining a light on the darkness nodes to make them explode.

In any case, you can select the Luminator via the item/action wheel. Then, shine a light while aiming at the anomaly’s bright core. Eventually, the core will burst open, allowing you to pick up a resource called ALX.

Note 1: After researching the corresponding techs, you can turn ALX into other resources via the Refinery.

Note 2: The Luminator gradually expends Suit Energy whenever you’re shining the light on a target. You can either bring some extra Suit Batteries or recharge your energy via outposts.

Continuously shine the light on an anomaly’s core to blast it.

How to destroy Interal Cores to obtain Planetary Samples

Let’s go back to what we mentioned earlier regarding Interals. These greenish wisps can also be destroyed using the Luminator. The difference is that doing so reveals luminescent patches of grass and flowers. You then need to follow these lush growths to where they lead.

Eventually, you’ll come across an Interal Vein Core. Activate the Luminator once more to blast the core so you can pick up a special item known as a Planetary Sample.

The Planetary Sample in The Alters can be used to unlock higher-tier techs in the Research Lab. These include suit upgrades, more advanced outposts, and better craftable tools.

Planetary Samples from Interal Vein Cores are quite valuable.

Note: If you decide to dawdle longer in a region until the sun gets dangerously close, it will trigger the “High Planetary Activity” state. It’s possible to find another Interal Vein in another location in the region, which means you can obtain an extra Planetary Sample.

That does it for our guide on how to destroy anomalies in The Alters. If you want to get ready for other threats that you’d encounter on your adventure, then we advise you to read our Magnetic Storms guide.

Can you help Jan Dolski and his clones stay alive throughout their ordeal? Well, if you need more tips, you can head over to our The Alters guides hub.

How to find and complete the sixth trial in Dune: Awakening

by admin June 11, 2025

The Sixth Trial of Aql is one of the most disorienting and gear-sensitive challenges in Dune: Awakening.

While other trials might test your movement or combat skills, this one throws you into a confusing cave system deep in hostile high-level territory, where simply finding the altar is a puzzle of its own. Add in the possibility of aggressive NPCs, blocked paths, and maze-like corridors, and it’s easy to see why many players hit a wall here.

Article continues after ad

After getting lost more times than I care to admit, I’ve mapped out the correct path and broken down what you’ll face so you can reach and complete the trial without wasting time or dying needlessly.

Sixth Trial location

To begin, you need to travel to the top northeast corner of the map, where you’ll find Devil’s Eye Cavern.

Dexerto

The cave entrance is nestled in the rocky cliffs and easy to miss, so keep your map open. Once inside, immediately place a respawn beacon. The area is high-level and not forgiving if you lack solid gear.

Expect resistance: enemies may appear inside the cave. Bring a decent weapon and healing supplies. You’ll also find some decent loot here, including a rifle and standard resources.

The biggest challenge is navigation. The cavern has multiple blocked paths, misleading corridors, and dead ends. The correct route involves descending and looping around into a partially hidden passage that leads to the trial site. When you see collapsed paths and murals, you’re on the right track.

How to solve the Sixth Trial

Unlike earlier trials, the Sixth Trial is more of a lore-based experience than a combat gauntlet. Once you reach the altar, you’ll find it damaged and surrounded by murals referencing the Zensunni wanderers (ancestors to the Fremen).

Interact with the altar. You won’t face a fight here; instead, the trial focuses on discovery and understanding. It hints at the spiritual journey of the Fremen, their migration, and their transformation.

Your character will reflect on the destruction and beauty of the place, noting connections between ancient traditions and present trials. After this moment of quiet insight, the trial concludes automatically.

Where To Find The Giant Downy Crake

by admin June 10, 2025

Monster Hunter Wilds certainly loves to hide things for players to discover. From exclusive weapon mechanics to unmapped areas, there is always something you’ve yet to learn about. The recently added Grand Hub is no exception, as the discovery of a humongous Downy Crake made waves across the community. Here’s how to find the oversized bird and how you can benefit from it.

Three Things We Learned From The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Demo

Where is the Giant Downy Crake

Screenshot: Capcom / Samuel Moreno / Kotaku

The Giant Downy Crake, lovingly nicknamed Gigacrake by the community, has a nest that’s hidden behind a waterfall. The good news is that the Grand Hub isn’t that big, and the path to find this unique bird is pretty close to the entrance. Reaching this area will only take a quick bit of platforming.

You’ll first want to climb up the side of the giant skeleton that envelops the Grand Hub. From the entrance, run over the wooden bridge to the right and up the dirt path. On your left and next to a torch will be a wall of vines you can climb to reach the top of some uncomfortably large bones. Once you’re at the top, run to the right and use the tip of the bone as a ramped jumping off point. There is no consequence for missing the elevated platform we’re shooting for, although aiming more towards the right can help if you keep missing.

Head left and jump across the chasm in front of the waterfall. Keep moving forward and you’ll come across a second waterfall. The mountainside gives in a little bit to reveal a narrow pathway that runs right behind it. Jump down and turn into the small alcove to find a small flock of downy crakes and their far larger parent.

Your incentive for finding this massively fluffy bird isn’t just to take some funny screenshots. You might sometimes find a special item called Nest Trinkets in front of it. Picking this up will reward you with one to multiple items that the little Downy Crakes have seemingly gathered. I’ve received a variety of seeds, eggs, and even treasures from gathering Nest Trinkets.

From my own testing, these seemed to respawn after a full day/night cycle inside the Grand Hub. That’s around a full 50 minutes you can’t skip because the rest mechanic doesn’t work for this area. However, whether I stayed exclusively in the Grand Hub or spent the time grinding out some Arena Quests, this only provided me with a single item. Going on back-to-back hunts would make Nest Trinkets respawn faster and provide more items. This functions similarly to the Cohoot Nests in Monster Hunter Rise. Basically, return after some good ol’ hunting and the birds will reward you handsomely.

Monster Hunter Wilds is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PCs.

Where to find iron in Dune: Awakening

by admin June 9, 2025

Grabbing some iron in Dune: Awakening is one of the necessary steps in upgrading your equipment and what you can build in your little desert enclave. You will have already crafted plenty using copper, but now it’s time for the Iron Age, though that will necessitate you relocating a little bit to actually find some.

Sadly, this does mean you’ll have to contend with heatstroke and hungry, hungry sandworms trying to chow down on you. All that said, here’s how to find iron in Dune: Awakening, plus how to craft the special cutteray you’ll need to harvest it.

Iron is easy to find in the Vermillius Gap, but you’ll need a Cutteray Mk1 to harvest it (Image credit: Funcom)

You can find iron in Eastern and Western Vermillius Gap; the two regions directly to the north of Hagga Basin South where you start. Before we talk about how to get there, you first need to research and fabricate the Cutteray Mk1, which is capable of mining iron. For this, you’ll need:

  • 6x copper ingots
  • 4x EMF Generators

Both of these are easy to get. You mine copper from boulders with blue spots using your cutteray and turn it into ingots in a small ore refinery in your base, while EMF Generators are usually located in moisture-sealed caves, i.e any of the cave icons on the map.

Once you’ve got your Cutteray Mk1, you’re ready to head north. The only problem is that to get to the regions with iron, you’ll have to cross a big sandy divide without getting eaten by sandworms or heatstroked. While you could probably make it travelling by night and moving just a little way at a time, your best bet is building a sandbike to speed across the desert, or getting a friend to give you a lift on theirs if they install an extra seat.

As soon as you cross, you’ll find the Southeast Ironworks and the Southwest Ironworks, plus a load of rocky pillared areas that have iron ore rocks dotted around them. Iron looks almost identical to copper; you’re searching for a big boulder with metallic spots all over it instead of blue ones. Once mined, you can turn iron ore into iron ingots at the small ore refinery as well, but unlike copper, this process also costs a fair amount of water, so you’ll want to stock up first.
