Nintendo posts cute and mysterious animated short film, but is it teasing Pikmin?

by admin October 7, 2025

Nintendo has posted a new animated short film on its Nintendo Today app and YouTube channel, so far completely devoid of context.

Called Close to You, the Pixar-esque film shows a baby following its toys around the room, seemingly moved by invisible creatures, all accompanied by a playful piano soundtrack.

The film has been posted purely with the name and no description, so it’s not initially clear what project (if any) this might relate to, be that a game or a film.

Close to You – NintendoWatch on YouTube

While the company doesn’t state which production studio created the film, some have speculated this is the work of Nintendo Pictures – its Tokyo-based animation studio that launched back in 2022, formerly known as Dynamo Pictures.

What’s more, the music references the main Pikmin theme tune at the start, while the focus on items being carried certainly alludes to the little plant creatures. And if you check under the bed at 1’41, a little red creature can be seen scurrying around.

What’s that under the bed? | Image credit: Nintendo

Could this be hinting at a Switch 2 version of Pikmin 4? That game does include levels themed around a child’s bedroom. But why go to the trouble of a new animated short?

At the very least, it’s a beautifully animated film and extremely cute.

What do you think Nintendo is hinting at?

Genndy Tartakovsky Releases Test Footage for 'Black Knight' Film

Genndy Tartakovsky Releases Test Footage for ‘Black Knight’ Film

by admin September 28, 2025

Longtime animator Genndy Tartakovsky has a new film he’s working on called Black Knight, and to get it made, he’s calling on his longtime audience for assistance.

On Friday, the Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and Star Wars: The Clone Wars alum released test footage for the film, which he’s been working on with his team for nearly a decade. Tartakovsky said on Instagram that Sony Animation “liked what we were doing, but they were unsure if there is an audience that would go see it theatrically. So to try something different, I thought I would share the test to see if it can get a ground swell of excitement that would change the studio’s mind.”

Black Knight is an original film centered on a 14th century knight operating a 20-foot tall suit of armor “using ropes, pulleys, and levers,” said Tartakovsky. While short, the footage shows our unnamed hero using a massive sword to fight a human-sized ninja armed with a kusarigama. The knight’s got the size advantage, but the ninja has speed on her side, though we don’t get much of an idea of what that would look like.

Still, the concept here is promising: the armor carries a lot of weight and the forest they’re fighting in looks gorgeous. Tartakovsky’s got plenty of CG experience thanks to his Hotel Transylvania movies, and you can bet it’d look good from start to finish.

Why wouldn’t Sony Pictures Animation want to make Black Knight for theaters? Because, as discussed during KPop Demon Hunters‘ rise, original animated movies finding an audience are a crapshoot, and there’s no telling what hits in the moment or takes off after the fact. (Nobody cared about Elemental until Disney changed its marketing strategy and it took off big in South Korea, for example.)

If Sony did put it in theaters, promoting it as “from the studio behind KPop” might also have general audiences thinking it’s only coming to theaters for a week or two before jumping over to Netflix. Whatever deal the two companies struck in 2021 that’s resulted in KPop and Tartakovsky’s recent raunchy 2D comedy Fixed hitting the streamer first doesn’t apply here, and Sony would probably like to not give every animated movie it owns over to Netflix right away.

None of this should take away from the fact that Black Knight should get made, given Tartakovsky’s pedigree and relationship with Sony. That’s what matters first and foremost, and with luck, enough interest will be drummed up that we can see it in some format in the years to come. Until then, there’s always Fixed, Primal, and everything else he’s made.

Death Stranding live-action film to “tell a story you haven’t seen in that world,” says director

by admin September 24, 2025

A24’s Death Stranding live-action film will tell “another story that you’ve never seen in this same universe,” according to its director, Michael Sarnoski.

During Kojima Productions’ Beyond the Strand 10th anniversary stream on September 23, 2025, Sarnoski joined Kojima and A24’s co-head Sam Hanson on stage to discuss his work on the film.

“Initially, when I came onto this project, it was a huge honour,” said Sarnoski, who also directed A Quiet Place: Day One. “I was terrified by the idea of taking something this big on, especially after [A] Quiet Place, which was a really big endeavour.

“But it was after meeting Kojima-san and talking to A24 that I realised how much freedom they were willing to give me on this project.”

Sarnoski also revealed that the live-action Death Stranding film adaptation will tell an original story, set in the same universe as the games.

Sarnoski said: “With this project, we really want to capture the soul of the game, capture the themes of the game, but tell a story you haven’t seen in that world, and explore characters you haven’t seen before, and find all of that scope and all of those incredible real locations, but also find all of those nuanced characters and just do justice to this on a macro and micro scale.”

“We’re trying to find something, another story that you’ve never seen in this same universe that is both accessible to people that have never played the games before, but will also give something to people that know the games really well,” he continued.

“And so, I think finding that balance and finding a way to tell a really human story in this world that captures everything we love about it as well as being able to stand on its own two feet is really the goal.”

Adding to this, Kojima explained that, due to Death Stranding taking “about 70, 80 hours” to complete, they didn’t want to “slim that down to a two-hour movie.”

“So, using that world, but a totally different story of Death Stranding the movie is essential and important,” Kojima said. “That’s why I wanted someone who could write and direct, and I’m not going to get involved too much because if I do, I’m going to start saying a lot of things. I’ll be like a producer, and I could trust Michael fully.”

In addition to the update on the live-action Death Stranding film, Kojima shared a first look at the animated Death Stranding movie, which now has the working title of Death Stranding: Mosquito.

While we already knew screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski was attached to write the film, during the event, Kojima announced that ABC Animation Studio’s Hiroshi Miyamoto is the animation director.

According to Miyamoto, the current working title is a hint at the film’s main character and their ability, as they have the ability to “suck something” that’s not blood.

During the 10th anniversary event, Kojima Productions also announced that it is working on an AR project with Niantic Spatial, revealed a new teaser trailer for OD (which now has the subtitle ‘Knock’), and revealed poster art and cast members for its upcoming stealth game Physint.

Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora’s New Story Expansion Arrives The Same Day As The Third Film

by admin September 23, 2025

December 19 is shaping up to be a great day for Avatar fans. In addition to being the theatrical premiere date of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in the franchise, a new story expansion hits 2023’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora the same day.

The similarly named From the Ashes expansion – the game’s third story DLC since launch – stars a Na’vi warrior named So’lek in a story set shortly after the conclusion of the main campaign. So’lek hails from the Trr’ong clan, and after being ambushed and left for dead by the RDA and its allies, the rival Ash clan, he awakens to find his world in ruin and his family scattered.

To seek revenge and find his family, So’lek journeys across Kinglor Forest (which has seen better days) and a brand-new area within the Western Frontier. From the Ashes can be purchased standalone for an unknown price for existing owners of the game, and it will be included as part of the new From the Ashes edition of the game that includes the base campaign and the Floating Mountains bonus content.

“With ‘From the Ashes’, we wanted to push the boundaries of what players can experience in Pandora,” said Omar Bouali, creative director at Massive Entertainment. “This expansion delivers a darker, more personal story, enhanced immersion via third-person gameplay, and intense new combat mechanics that deepen the emotional and tactical stakes. We wanted to offer fans a thrilling new perspective on the Western Frontier, with deeper storytelling and more visceral gameplay.”

From the Ashes will arrive shortly after a free December 5 update that will add a third-person mode and New Game Plus to Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. In the meantime, you can read our review of the base experience here.

Zach Cregger’s Saving His DC Film ‘Henchman’ For the Right Time

by admin September 22, 2025

Last month, we learned Zach Cregger had another project on his hands: Henchman for DC. Once again written and directed by him, the movie would star a low-level goon that moves up in the crime world after apparently taking down Batman, similar to the Batman: The Animated Series episode “The Man Who Killed Batman.”

Henchman was just a script at the time, but you can imagine Cregger would get to actually pitching it once he had some free time. Now, it sounds like we’ll be waiting a while, as he told ScreenRant he’d keep it to himself for now. His reasoning comes down to the growing amount of Batman projects, which includes The Batman Part II and Clayface. “I love that script, but Gotham City IP is the most coveted,” he explained. “Right now, there’s a lot of people that have their own kind of flavor. It’s a very kind of crowded playing field, and my movie, I don’t think it really fits into any of that.”

Cregger assured he’s not put out by fellow creators like Matt Reeves and James Gunn. But with so many “hurdles” around Batman at the moment, he’s going to “leave [things] to the universe” before approaching Gunn and DC with Henchman. Optimistically, he called the script “a great story, I think it’s awesome. When that door opens, I’ll happily step through it.” Just maybe don’t expect it for at least two or three years.

Until then, we’ve got Weapons, which recently came to digital, and his Resident Evil movie on September 18, 2026.

Netflix and Guillermo del Toro Team on ‘Boy in the Iron Box’ Film

by admin September 20, 2025

After partnering with Netflix on Pinocchio and Frankenstein, Guillermo del Toro is reteaming with them on a third film project.

Per the Hollywood Reporter, this’ll be The Boy in the Iron Box, a series of short stories the filmmaker co-created with Chuck Hogan. (Their second collaboration, following their Strain trilogy that was adapted into an FX series.) del Toro will produce the adaptation to be directed and written by David Prior, writer/director/co-editor of the 2020 cult classic The Empty Man. The upcoming film has also found its three leads in Rupert Friend (Jurassic World Rebirth), Jaeden Martell (Y2K), and Kevin Durand (Abigail). Production for the film will begin in October.

The Boy in the Iron Box tells the story of mercenaries who crash land on a remote snowy summit. In their efforts to find shelter, they stumble across a mazelike stone fortress deadlier than the wolves and freezing wind. The six novellas released for Kindle in 2024 via and each earned a solid reception. Friend will play mercenary leader Liev and Durand one of the men under his command, while Martell plays the titular Boy in the iron box found by the guns for hire.

We’ll have more on The Boy in the Iron Box as news emerges. Until then, you can read the books for yourself here, and see Frankenstein in theaters on October 17 before it hits Netflix on November 7.

Weapons director’s Resident Evil film will be “entirely original story”, so don’t expect Leon Kennedy to make a star appearance

by admin September 19, 2025

Zach Cregger’s forthcoming Resident Evil film will be an “entirely original story”, so won’t feature fan-favourite character Leon Kennedy.

The director of recent horror-hit Weapons spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his next film, based on Capcom’s game series.

“When you watch it, you’ll be like, ‘This is very Zach’,” he said. “It’s just [that] it takes place in the Resident Evil world. I don’t think fans of the games are gonna be bummed.”

Weapons star Austin Abrams will lead the Resident Evil film cast, with actor and professional wrestler Paul Walter Hauser also confirmed. Cregger has co-written the script with Shay Hatten.

“I’m not gonna steal Leon and put him in an original story. I think that would be presumptuous,” said Cregger. “But I respect the games enough where I’m gonna like tell a Resident Evil story in the Resident Evil canon that still leaves everything they love intact from the games, you know what I mean?”

He added: “I think that when you see it, you’ll understand how I can be obsessed with original ideas and still make a movie that is an IP-based thing. I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense now, but I hope that it will later.”

In a previous interview, Cregger stated the film “lives” in the world of Resident Evil 2 and 3, but “adheres more to the tone of 4”. What’s more, the viewing experience will be akin to the journey players take in the game, following a protagonist from A to B “as they just descend deeper and deeper and deeper into hell”.

Cregger’s Resident Evil film is set for a release on 18th September 2026.

George A. Romero’s Daughter Making A Zombie Drag Queen Film

by admin September 19, 2025

Tina Romero, the daughter of the late filmmaker and creator of the modern zombie, George A. Romero, is making her directorial debut with, appropriately enough, a movie all about an invasion of the undead. But Queens of the Dead shakes up the formula by having the zombies attack an NYC party featuring drag queen performers and their friends.

Queens of the Dead is a new horror comedy mixing together drag queens and zombies, and it’s set to hit theaters in October. The first look at this upcoming flick is out now, and the movie looks fun. It also looks like a movie that might greatly upset and confuse your conservative grandpa, who loves Fox News. Here’s the trailer:

The new movie stars the always excellent Katy O’Brian, Nina West, Jack Haven, and others, and looks to split its action between a group of clubgoers and drag queens stuck in a warehouse party, and the happenings at a hospital in New York City during the zombie uprising. After watching this trailer, I’m on board for this spin on the classic zombie movie. It’s also great to see Romero continuing her father’s legacy of making zombie movies that aren’t just gory and scary, but also filled with characters and ideas that feel extremely relevant. Romero’s iconic horror movie, Night of the Living Dead, essentially created modern-day zombies, or ghouls as he often called them, and laid out the basic framework most zombie movies follow: People stuck in a place fight back the dead while dealing with each other.

Here’s the official description for the film courtesy of IFC Films:

When a zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, & frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty, scrolling undead.

In 2025, with President Trump and other Republicans cracking down on LGBTQ people and anything they deem “different,” a movie about a horde of nasty zombies trying to destroy a safe place for drag queens and queer folk seems pretty dang perfect. I’d bet George would be proud of his daughter’s first theatrical film. Before this, she had done TV and smaller projects. I’m excited to check out Queens of the Dead when it arrives in theaters on October 24. Just in time for Halloween.

BioShock film script currently in the works, to be based on first game

by admin September 11, 2025

The script for the BioShock movie is currently being written, with Vertigo Entertainment producer Roy Lee confirming the film adaptation will be based on the first game.

In an interview with The Direct, published on September 9, 2025, Lee told the publication that the BioShock film is “definitely going to be based on the first BioShock game.”

The publication was speaking to Lee about The Long Walk, the upcoming dystopian horror (based on Stephen King’s novel) directed by Francis Lawrence, who is signed on to direct the upcoming BioShock movie.

“The Long Walk became a reality because BioShock was delayed for a little bit, where we had to do some more script work,” Lee revealed to the publication.

“And so as the script work is being done, we shot The Long Walk.”

BioShock’s script is currently being penned by Logan and Blade Runner 2049 writer Michael Green.

Lee went on to reveal that Lawrence, who has directed several of The Hunger Games films, was “already committed” to directing The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which is currently in production in Spain and is due for release in November 2026.

“And so it’s just waiting for him whenever The Hunger Games is completed, and the script is just being worked on right now,” Lee continued.

Take-Two Interactive has been trying to bring its dystopian first-person shooter series to the silver screen for almost two decades.

In 2008, Take-Two announced a deal with Universal Pictures to make a BioShock movie, to be directed by Pirates of the Caribbean’s Gore Verbinski.

But following budget concerns and the loss of two directors for the project, it was ultimately cancelled in 2013.

In 2022, Netflix announced its plans to bring the franchise to the silver screen, with the live-action film to be produced by Vertigo Entertainment and 2K.

In 2024, however, Netflix slashed the movie’s budget to focus on making it a smaller, “more personal” project.

During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Lee explained the BioShock project was being “reconfigured” following a change in leadership at the streaming firm.

“The new regime has lowered the budgets,” Lee said. “So we’re doing a much smaller version… It’s going to be a more personal point of view, as opposed to a grander, big project.”

AI Will Be Used to ‘Reconstruct’ Lost Orson Welles Film ‘The Magnificent Ambersons’

by admin September 6, 2025

In brief

  • AI firm Showrunner plans to produce an interpretation of missing footage from Orson Welles’ 1942 film, “The Magnificent Ambersons.”
  • The reconstruction effort will use deepfake technology and newly shot footage based on archival research.
  • The end product will not be commercially released, as Showrunner doesn’t hold the rights to the original film.

AI firm Showrunner plans to “reconstruct” 43 missing minutes of footage from Orson Welles’ 1942 classic “The Magnificent Ambersons” using artificial intelligence.

Per a report in trade paper The Hollywood Reporter, Showrunner will use a combination of AI tools and conventional filmmaking techniques to assemble its interpretation of the missing footage, using archived set photos as the basis for the scenes.

Although it plans to spend the next two years working on the project, Showrunner will be unable to commercialize it, since it has not obtained the rights to the film from Warner Bros. Discovery or Concord.

Instead, Showrunner CEO Edward Saatchi said, the AI reconstruction is an “academic” effort: “The goal isn’t to commercialize the 43 minutes, but to see them exist in the world after 80 years of people asking ‘might this have been the best film ever made in its original form?”

Filmmaker Brian Rose, who has spearheaded efforts to reconstruct “The Magnificent Ambersons,” will collaborate with Showrunner on the project. Rose has previously used archival records, voice actors and animation to approximate the framing and timing of Welles’ original 131-minute cut of the film. The new version will incorporate live footage shot with new actors, using AI deepfake technology to preserve the original cast’s likenesses.

Decrypt has reached out to Showrunner for comment, and will update this article should they respond.

The tangled history of “Ambersons”

The follow-up to Welles’ 1941 feature “Citizen Kane,” which has topped multiple polls as the greatest film ever made, “The Magnificent Ambersons” was edited down by RKO Studios from its original 131-minute cut to a mere 87 minutes, with a newly shot happy ending tacked on against the director’s wishes.

“They destroyed ‘Ambersons’ and it destroyed me,” Welles said in an interview with the BBC. While the director made extensive notes on his preferred cut, the film’s negatives were destroyed in order to free up space in RKO’s vault, while a rough cut of the film sent to Welles in Brazil was subsequently lost—becoming something of a holy grail for cinephiles.

“My whole third act is lost because of all the hysterical tinkering that went on,” Welles told filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich years later.

Going back to the Welles

This isn’t the first posthumous attempt to reconstruct a Welles classic. In 1998, “Apocalypse Now” editor Walter Murch used a 58-page memo penned by Welles to create a “restored” version of his 1958 film “Touch of Evil.” And in 2018, Netflix funded a restoration of Welles’ long-lost film “The Other Side of the Wind,” the footage for which had languished in a vault for years due to a legal dispute.

Welles’ voice, meanwhile, has been digitally recreated using AI to serve as a narrator for “location-based storytelling app” Storyrabbit.

Backed by Amazon’s Alexa Fund, Showrunner bills itself as the “Netflix of AI.” Its generative storytelling platform enables users to create episodes of animated shows using prompts or photos. Speaking to Decrypt at the time of its launch, Showrunner founder Edward Saatchi argued that the generative content is “a whole new artistic medium.”

Its effort to interpret Welles’ missing footage for “The Magnificent Ambersons” is a stepping stone to creating long-form stories using AI, Saatchi told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Year by year, the technology is getting closer to prompting entire films with AI,” he said. Although today’s AI models “can’t sustain a story beyond one short episode,” he added, Storyteller is a “step toward a scary, strange future of generative storytelling.”
