The Last Of Us Director Ends A Long-Running Fan Debate

You might not know it based on my scathing recaps of The Last of Us’ second season, but I love this series. I love the moral conundrums it presents, the violent grief it depicts, and the games’ excellent writing that poignantly brings all of those complicated emotions to the surface. What I don’t like is listening to pretty much any of the creative team talk about the series, especially when it comes to weighing in on decade-long discourse around its complex storylines. Even when I agree with series director Neil Druckmann’s interpretation of something, we’d all rather he just let bad readings fester in the corners of the internet than tell us exactly what something means. Nevertheless, he continues to do so in interviews.

The Week In Games: Pokémon With Guns And More New Releases

In a discussion with the Sacred Symbols podcast (thanks, IGN), Druckmann talked about the end of The Last of Us Part I, which was adapted for television in the HBO show’s first season. In this climactic moment, Joel—a smuggler turned surrogate father to Ellie, the young girl immune to a fungal infection that has leveled the series’ post-apocalyptic world—massacres members of a revolutionary group called the Fireflies who sought to use Ellie’s immunity to create a vaccine. They could potentially have saved millions of lives and helped society rebuild again after decades of ruin. But after months of traveling across the United States to reach the group’s base in Salt Lake City, Joel wasn’t willing to lose Ellie for something as small as the possibility of a world-saving vaccine. After the player fights their way through the facility and escapes with Ellie, Joel lies to her about what happened, and they live happily ever after(?) in Jackson, Wyoming…until the sequel, at least.

It’s a nuanced situation, and ever since The Last of Us launched in 2013, fans have debated the ethics of pretty much every character in this finale. However, one part of the discussion that has persisted is the question of whether or not the Fireflies would have been able to successfully create a cure or vaccine in the first place. This is the post-apocalypse. They’ve got one surgeon here who claims to be able to do the job, and even if they managed to concoct a vaccine, how would they distribute it? All of that is an interesting logistical discussion, but some fans have taken that talking point a step further and tried to claim the potential success of the plan was ever part of Joel’s motivations. It’s very obvious that the man cares about Ellie’s life above all else, and didn’t stop to weigh up the vagueries of vaccine efficacy in a zombie apocalypse I’ve always read these attempts to explain away Joel’s guilt as cope, and the idea that he had a firm confidence that the Fireflies’ attempts would fail as an effort to wash away the reality of Joel’s actions.

Yet now, Druckmann has confirmed that it was always the intention for the group’s medical team to be able to create the cure, essentially nuking that talking point. Am I upset that we can now put this obviously desperate theory to bed? No. Do I wish Druckmann would stop giving definitive answers to a story that has thrived in ambiguity and interpretation? Absolutely.

“Our intent was yes, they could [make a cure],” Druckmann said. “Now, is our science a little shaky that now people are now questioning it? Sure. Our science is a little shaky and people are now questioning it. I can’t say anything. I can say our intent was that they would have made a cure. That makes the most interesting philosophical question for what Joel does.”

Sure, it’s the most interesting interpretation because it actually interrogates everything you know about Joel based on how he presents. Giving him an out is just refusing to engage with the text. Do you want to debate if the Fireflies were equipped to save the world with a vaccine? That’s an entirely separate discussion from Joel’s motivations. But even so, we don’t need every detail spelt out. Maybe it’s because Druckmann is being constantly interviewed about this series after two games, more remasters than I care to count, and two seasons of television, but the more we talk to this dude (and HBO series showrunner Craig Mazin) and ask him to tell us what it all meant, the less interesting the story can be. I don’t want to know if Druckmann thinks Joel was right. I don’t need the author to tell me what I’m supposed to feel. It’s a major reason why the show bothers me so much, because it loves to tell you what lessons you’re supposed to learn, rather than giving you a second to consider what you feel about it.

I wish we lived in a world where The Last of Us’ marketing got to be as bold as the games. Just let it speak for itself.

$80 for Borderlands 4 too costly? Randy Pitchford says, “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen”

Worried the impending arrival of $80 games might price you out of your favourite hobby? Well if Borderlands 4 follows suit, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has suggested the community should just suck it up and deal with it. “If you’re a real fan,” he recently told a potential purchaser, “you’ll find a way to make it happen.”


Pitchford made the proclamation on social media after a Borderlands fan opined, “Randy, [Borderlands 4] better not be $80. Don’t take that risk, a lot of gamers aren’t gonna pay $80 and feed this notion of constant increase of the price tag. You are the CEO, you have some say with the price when it comes to your publisher.”


But Pitchford begged to differ. “Not my call,” he insisted, before dismissing pricing concerns. “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlour in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.”


The response from Borderlands fans on social media was, unsurprisingly, swift, strong, and overwhelmingly negative. “Thanks, now I won’t buy the Game even if it costs $70”, one person wrote, while another added, “That has to be one of the worst CEO replies from recent memory.” Another called Pitchford’s comment “elitist [and] out of touch”; “Rich person says just find the money,” another wrote, with plenty more using considerably stronger language.


Of course, none of this means Borderlands 4 will cost $80 dollars when it eventually arrives, but the industry certainly seems to be heading in that direction. Nintendo got the ball rolling earlier this year, when it announced a $79.99 USD price tag for Mario Kart World on Switch 2, and Microsoft was quick to follow, confirming some Xbox game prices would rise to $79.99 at the end of 2025 – presumably in time for this year’s Call of Duty.


Notably, however, Borderlands 4 publisher Take-Two has relayed a more cautious approach to price increases, with CEO Strauss Zelnick recently reiterating the company’s stance on variable, game-by-game pricing. While some analysts have speculated next year’s GTA 6 might reach as much as $100, one of the only confirmed prices on Take-Two’s upcoming roster is Mafia: The Old Country, which costs $50. Borderlands 4 pricing details are yet to be shared.


But while customers might balk at the rising cost of games, former PlayStation exec Shuhei Yoshida recently suggested the move was inevitable. “I think it was going to happen sooner or later,” he explained in the wake of Mario Kart World’s price reveal, “maybe not from Nintendo, but it was going to happen eventually. We live in contrasting times, where inflation is real and significant, but people expect games that are ever more ambitious and therefore expensive to develop to cost the same. It’s an impossible equation.”


As for Borderlands 4, that’s set to launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on 12th September after Take-Two announced it was bringing its release forward.

LEGO seemingly shuts down Bionicle fan game after 8 years of development, because as we all know Bionicle is a scorching hot IP that the company is doing a lot with right now

Bionicle: Masks of Power – a fan game that has been in development for eight years – has been shut down following a request from The LEGO Group, its developers claim.

In a statement released to the public via a Google Doc, the team broke down the situation for fans who’ve been waiting to actually play the game after all this time. The devs, who were preparing to drop a demo this August, claim that LEGO reached out to request they shut down development on the project and remove the game from the public eye.

In the statement, the team expressed its historical intention to keep in line with the official LEGO Fair Play Guidelines, as to not draw the eye of an legal action from LEGO looking to protect its copyright. Despite these intentions, the hammer has seemingly come down. While it says no official reason for the takedown was given, the team suspects that it was because the average person may mistake the game for an official game, rather than a fan project. It seems this fan game was a victim of its own good SEO.

In reaction to the news, the development team has released a walkthrough of the demo, and has decided to form a new indie studio: Unmasked Games. That name is great by the way, hinting towards its Bionicle roots but taking the mask off for future endeavors. They conclude the statement with the following: “This has been heartbreaking news for our entire team, but we’re also incredibly excited about what the future has in store, and for what we’ll get the chance to create next. We hope that you’re all just as excited as we are. For the final time… May the Great Spirit guide you.”

Bionicle has been a dead IP product line since 2010 by the way. That’s the last time any actual toys were produced by The LEGO group. There was a series of comics written by Greg Farshtey, though that has also been dead for over a decade. It’s clear that the Bionicle IP is scorching hot, something LEGO is clearly doing a lot with. Sarcasm aside, such are the ways of legal departments. IP must be protected, even for IP that has had no development or frankly relevancy for over a decade. That is, aside from a relatively small community of fans who were, until very recently, excited for a new fan game. Damn shame!

It’s a bummer. It’s a common belief that the best way to approach making fan games is to “shut the f**k up”, but obviously not all fan project teams have the luxury of silence and a sudden shadow drop before any cease and desist can come through and ruin all the fun. Still, if you were excited for Mask of Power, why not give the folks at Unmasked Games some love, and support them going forward.

Lego Bionicle Fan Game Shutdown After 8 Years Of Development

An open-world, third-person Bionicle fan game that had a lot of hype in the community and which has been in development for nearly a decade has allegedly been canceled by the Lego Group just a few months before the project’s first big demo was set to release.

Bionicle was a popular line of buildable action figures created by the Lego group in 2001. The line was the first original transmedia franchise created by Lego, featuring a deep amount of lore and stories told in comics, books, and animated movies. It was planned to run for 20 years but, due to low sales, was ended in 2010. It was revived in 2015, but old fans didn’t embrace the reboot and the revival ended in 2016. Despite a decade having passed since Lego made new Bionicle sets, fans still love the weird franchise featuring bio-organic super robots and sci-fi magic. And for the past eight years, a growing group of fans known as Team Kanohi have been developing their dream Bionicle game, Masks of Power, but have been forced to stop after Lego demanded it.

On May 17, Team Kanohi announced that the Lego Group requested that the team shut down the project completely and remove Masks of Power from the internet.

“We’ve been transparent about the hardships our team has faced over the past year as we’ve worked to release the first look at Bionicle: Masks of Power: the ‘FREE THE BAND’ demo,” said Team Kanohi. “After many years of hard work, our team was in the final stages of bugfixing and polishing for the demo’s release. We had planned to shadowdrop the demo on August 10th, 2025.”

“Unfortunately, it seems that will no longer happen. The LEGO Group has asked our team to shut down our project in its entirety, and remove Bionicle: Masks of Power from the public eye.”

Despite not being able to release the demo or finish the game, Team Kanohi has put out a two-hour video showing off the unfinished demo for the Bionicle game. The group says it’s still “incredibly proud” of what it has made and I have to agree. This looks awesome, and I’m not even a Bionicle fan.

So why did the Lego Group shut down this project? According to the dev team, they have been in contact with the company for years and have followed all of the rules surrounding fan-created content. Masks of Power was going to be released for free, and included disclaimers that made it clear this was a fan project. Lego has also officially called out and supported other Bionicle fan games in the past. However, it seems like Masks of Power was starting to look too official for Lego lawyers.

“Unfortunately, it seems like the LEGO Group’s stance on fan-created media has changed. While we can only speculate as to the exact reason why they have asked us to remove the game at this time, what we suspect is that our project was too easy to mistake for an official product,” said the devs. “At the time of writing, searching ‘Bionicle game’ on Google lists the Steam page for Bionicle: Masks of Power within the first couple of links.”

“An average person seeing our game for the first time could easily think that it was an official game at first glance. And no amount of disclaimers we could put up would be able to change that.”

It’s not all sad news, though, as the team behind the now-cancelled fan game has announced plans to develop a new game—Project Rustbound—built off the work they put into Masks of Power. Hopefully this project gets to see the light of day.
