Intel 18A wafer
Product Reviews

Intel claims 18A, the node Pat bet the company on, is either 25% faster or 38% more efficient than Intel 3. Though that’s a node Intel didn’t have enough faith in to release for desktops or laptops

by admin June 19, 2025

Intel has been deep diving on its upcoming 18A chip node at the VLSI Symposium in Japan. And if the company’s claims are to be believed, 18A is looking pretty sweet. Among other factoids, Intel says it’s either up to 25% faster at the same power level, or up to 38% more efficient at the same frequency compared with the Intel 3 node. That’s very promising for laptop battery life in particular.

Of course, Intel 3 is a node of which we have absolutely zero experience. That’s because Intel has never used Intel 3 for a consumer chip, choosing instead to go with TSMC’s N3 node for both its Lunar Lake laptop chip and latest Arrow Lake desktop and mobile CPU family, as used for the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K.

The most advanced Intel node in the PC is Intel 7, which is a rebrand of Intel’s infamous 10nm technology, which ended up arriving the better part of a decade late. Anyway, what to make of these claims from Intel?

Specifically and compared to Intel 3, Intel says that in low voltage 0.65 V operation, 18A is either 18% faster or 38% more efficient, while in high voltage 1.1 V mode, it’s 25% faster or 36% more efficient. In other words, in low voltage mode you can either run the same clock speed as Intel 3 and use 38% less power, or use the same power and enjoy 18% faster clocks.

Meanwhile, in the high performance, high voltage mode, you can choose between either 25% higher clocks for the same power consumption as Intel 3 or the same clocks with 36% lower consumption.

Any way you slice it, these are very nice numbers. It’s just hard to draw too many conclusions given the scarcity of comparable Intel chips on the Intel 3 node. For now, it’s only the Xeon 6 Granite Rapids server CPU, launched earlier this year, that’s built on Intel 3.

Moreover, the fact that Intel passed over Intel 3 for Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake hardly seems like a vote of confidence in its own manufacturing tech. The point being that Intel also made some bullish claims about Intel 3 and an 18% performance-per-watt increase over Intel 4, but it seems like we’ll never get an Intel 3 chip in a PC.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

What’s more, even if these claims are accurate, there’s the question of yields. Can Intel actually produce 18A chips at scale? Answers to all these questions will presumably come later this year when the Panther Lake mobile CPU with an 18A CPU die is supposed to be released.

If Intel’s numbers are accurate, Panther Lake ought to be a much more efficient laptop CPU, enabling clearly improved battery life. At least, that’s compared to Intel 3. Exactly how 18A compares with TSMC N3, which is the node used by Intel for Lunar Lake’s CPU cores is a separate matter.

The takeaway here, then, is that this is all very complicated. Intel has released some very promising numbers. But they involve comparison with another Intel node which itself is only available in a range of server chips and it’s unclear how 18A stacks up against TSMC’s competing technology.

The proof will be in the processing, so to speak, when Panther Lake arrives at the end of this year. It’s been a long time coming, but no CPU has ever felt as critical for Intel as Panther Lake.

A new Champion joins the League, with League of Legends revealing Yunara the Unbroken Faith

by admin June 16, 2025

Today, the League of Legends team revealed in-game details about the newest Champion, Yunara the Unbroken Faith.

During the Darkin War, Yunara, the Kinkou Order’s Fist of Shadow, sacrificed herself to contain the Darkin Glaive within the Spirit Realm. There she remained until the Wyldbloom returned both her and the shrine she was sealed within to the Mortal Realm. “When the Eye is blinded and the Heart falters, the Fist must strike all the harder.”Now, centuries in the future, Yunara finds herself in an Ionia she barely recognizes, armed with knowledge and techniques long forgotten—until now.

Abilities

Passive – Vow to the First Lands

Yunara’s critical strikes deal extra magic damage.

Q – Cultivation of Spirit

Yunara
gains a stack of Unleash with every attack, plus an extra one when she
hits a champion or lands a crit. At max stacks, Yunara can activate her Q
to gain attack speed, bonus damage on hit, and will deal splash damage
in a small area with each attack.

This ability is automatically activated while Yunara is Transcended.

W – Arc of Judgment / Arc of Ruin

Yunara
sends a swirling prayer bead out, which damages and slows enemies as it
travels. At its endpoint, it lingers and expands for a moment,
continuing to damage enemies who don’t get out of the way.

While Transcended instead of a swirling prayer bead, she fires a beam of spirit magic that slows and deals damage in a line.

E – Kanmei’s Steps / Untouchable Shadows

Yunara gains a quick burst of move speed to chase down enemies, reposition, or dodge skillshots.

While Transcended, she instead dashes.

R – Transcend One’s Self

Yunara
taps into her full power, entering a transcendent state for several
seconds that enhances all of her basic abilities for the duration.

Sony is Still Putting Its Faith in ‘Marathon’

by admin June 14, 2025

Bungie’s Marathon is still coming out, and when it does, PlayStation plans on giving the extraction shooter a fair shot.

During a recent investor interview, Sony Interactive Entertainment head Herman Hulst assured the game would come out before March 31, 2026, when Sony’s fiscal year ends. Touching on its recent alpha test, he descbied the feedback as “varied, but super useful. […] The constant testing, the constant re-validation of assumptions that we just talked about, to me is just so valuable to iterate and to constantly improve the title, so when launch comes, we’re going to give the title the optimal chance of success.”

Hanging over PlayStation is 2024’s sci-fi shooter Concord, which shut down weeks after launch and later led to developer Firewalk Studios closing down. That’s been just one of several botched attempts from PlayStation’s attempts to enter live-service games, which includes several canceled projects and layoffs across its first-party studios. While acknowledging these “unique challenges” and attributing Concord’s failure to the “hypercompetitive market” of hero shooters, Hulst talked up how they’re avoiding the same mistakes with Marathon.

“It’s going to be the first new Bungie title in over a decade, and it’s our goal to release a very bold, very innovative, and deeply engaging title. We’re monitoring the closed alpha cycle the team has just gone through. We’re taking all the lessons learned, we’re using the capabilities we’ve built and analytics and user testing to understand how audiences are engaging with the title.”

One thing Hulst didn’t touch on, though, was the recent accusations of art plagiarism levvied against Bungie. In May, artist Fern “Antireal” Hook released evidence alleging the studio stole assets she made from previous work and failed to credit her. After investigating, Bungie attributed the theft to the work of a former employee, publicly apologized, and said it would do “everything we can to make this right” with Hook. It also promised to review all in-game assets and replace “questionably sourced” art with original, in-house work.

With the mention of its arriving before the fiscal year ends, Marathon may be delayed out of its current September 23 launch. At time of writing, Bungie and PlayStation have kept mum on a potential delay, but the game failed to make an appearance at PlayStation’s recent State of Play in early June.
