This $6,000 professional grade direct transfer printer comes with plenty of viruses for no extra cost, unless it also steals your crypto

by admin May 22, 2025

It’s a sad truth that you just can’t ever let your guard down when it comes to malicious software, even when buying a $6,000 USD professional grade printer. This is something tech reviewer Cameron Coward found out to be all too true when reviewing a Procolored V11 Pro DTO UV Printer over on Hackster (via Techspot). The printer is supposed to be a fairly high quality device, for those looking to make UV transfers, but he found some pretty nasty software hiding on the included USB.

Coward, who’s also behind the Serial Hobbyism YouTube channel, got pretty lucky when his computer Antivirus flagged software on the included Procolored software installation USB stick as malicious. It picked the malware as being Floxif, a worm known for devastating computers that is usually shared via USB. It’s not quite as scary as ransomware on a CPU, but it’s still fortunate, he did not go ahead with the installation.

Instead, Coward tried to download and install it fresh from the website, but still was flagged for viruses along the way. He smartly contacted Procolored to ask them about the problem. The company informed him it was a false positive, and further encouraged him to install the software. Thankfully Coward didn’t, and instead turned to the internet for more more help on the issue.

It turned out there were quite a few people talking about finding viruses in Procolored’s software, so he brought the problem to Reddit. Thankfully the white-hats were happy to help, and they all reported finding viruses on the software.

One of these heroes, Karsten Hahn, Principle Malware Researcher at G DATA CyberDefense said “I checked the files yesterday and found several files with XRed backdoor and a malicious Coinminer. There is no doubt that several files provided in the download section are malicious.”

While Hahn didn’t find Floxif in the downloadable software, they did discover a backdoor and a trojan cryptocurrency stealer, or clipbanker in the package. The good news is the backdoor pointed to an address that’s unused and out of date, so is likely harmless. The weird thing here is that the clipbanker was new, so he dubbed it SnipVex, and it turns out to be a bit nastier than originally implied.

SnipVex looks as though its primary design is to steal cryptocurrency, but those addresses haven’t been used as far as Hahn could tell, since last year. Instead the current threat here is the ability to infect other files and cause more problems. Thankfully it’s not the most difficult to fix, but it’s still fairly insidious. A quick reinstall is always the best course of action here.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Hahn also notes that while a few of his counterparts on Reddit feel this software was placed intentionally, it seems unlikely. All these old addresses don’t exactly grant the attacker anything. If anything it’s more likely that this has happened as an accident, but Procolored’s response is still very disappointing.

This is a friendly reminder that if something seems pretty suspicious when downloading or installing software, it likely is. Even if it comes with a $6,000 machine. Plus it never hurts to get online and check if your friendly neighbourhood hackers can help investigate these things.

If you’re looking to purchase one of these machines I’d recommend giving Hahn’s breakdown on the viruses a good read. It gives you a better idea of the kind of nefarious things hiding in these software packages, what they can do, and what to look for. Stay safe out there, everyone.

Here’re the games leaving PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium in June

by admin May 21, 2025

Following last week’s PlayStation Plus catalogue additions for May, Sony has announced its next batch of departures, with Monster Hunter Rise and more all leaving the service in June.

In total, PlayStation Plus’ newly updated Last Chance to Play section confirms six titles are currently scheduled to be removed from the service next month, meaning the clock is ticking if you were hoping to see any of the following games’ credits roll:

  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Rogue Legacy 2
  • Inscryption
  • After Us
  • Kayak VR: Mirage
  • Avicii Invector

Rogue Legacy 2 plays are great as it looks.Watch on YouTube

The good news is it’s a considerably smaller list compared to last month, when Sony jettisoned over 22 titles – including the likes of Grand Theft Auto 5, Batman: Arkham Knight, Payday 2, Ghostrunner, and Journey to the Savage Planet. But that’s not to say none of June’s removals will be missed; Monster Hunter Rise is a stellar entry in Capcom’s long-running series, while Rogue Legacy 2 – with its jauntily compelling permadeath platform exploration – and the wonderfully sinister Inscryption both come highly recommended.

And if you’ve managed to miss the news of PlayStation Plus’ latest additions so far this month, these include Battlefield 5, Stalker: Legends of the Zone Trilogy, Humankind, and Sandland for Premium and Extra subscribers. Ark: Survival Ascended, Balatro, and Warhammer 40K: Boltgun, meanwhile, can be picked up across all three membership tiers. You can find more details in Eurogamer’s full PlayStation Plus guide.

Fancy a Witcher 3 10th anniversary playthrough with extra “classic RPG feel”? Well, this new mod gives it a totally revamped Witcher 1-style skill system

by admin May 19, 2025

In case you missed it, The Witcher 3 is now a decade old. We’re all knee-deep in replays of old games right now, but if all the TW3 anniversary chat has you thinking about firing it up again, a new mod looks like it’ll offer an interesting twist for folks looking forward to The Witcher Remake.

After all, how best to switcher up your Witcher experience than swapping one Witcher skill system for a different Witcher skill system from an older Witcher game. That way, you can see Witcher is better. All right, I’ll stop mucking about.

The mod is Gerwant30’s Witcher 1 talent trees remake for The Witcher 3, with its creator having previously scored second place on one of CD Projekt’s REDkit modding contests with a work that lets you explore a bit of Cintra.

Now, as part of their ongoing “Tales of the Witcher” project, they’ve had a go at adding their own version of first Witcher game’s skill system into TW3, with the goal of giving you “a lot more control” over Geralt’s development via “13 new talent trees and over 200 new skills”. “This mod attempts to recreate that feeling and philosophy within The Witcher 3,” Gerwant30 explained, “replacing the standard skill trees with a more layered and, hopefully, rewarding progression system.”

Watch on YouTube

As you can see in the showcase video above, the mod sees you work up and earn bronze, silver, and gold talents across trees dedicated to the likes of strength and dexterity as you level up. You’ll start off by earning bronzes early-game, then gradually move on the silvers and golds as you get more proficient and gradually morph into a master witcher.

There are four main skill trees including the two mentioned earlier, each with 17 skills, but that’s far from it. The five Witcher signs each have their own 18 skill strong tree “allowing for deep specialization”, and there are four combat skill trees aimed at “strong” and “fast” attacks with your steel and silver blades.

“Your power comes mostly from how you build your character,” the modder writes, “Skills, talents, and preparation define your strength, equipment statistics are less important.” Certainly a lot to tweak if you’re a fan of in-depth build engineering, though it’s worth noting that this being a beta, a fair amount of the skills and features are still very much a work-in-progress.

It’s also worth noting that Gerwant30’s designed the mod to work exclusively with “a fresh new game in the base version of The Witcher 3 only”, with them being very clear that existing saves and standalone playthroughs of the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine DLC won’t work as intended. They also intend for it to be used with another mod, SkylineR390’s ‘Alchemy’, so you’ll need to grab that if you fancy giving this skill tree mod a go.

PsychoCaki’s ‘SCAAR’ and a camera mod like TheMenxceX and ElementaryLewis’ ‘Immersive Camera for Next Gen’ are also on Gerwant30’s recommended list.

Did you prefer the first Witcher game’s more old-school approach to skills, or is how TW3 does things second nature at this point and not something you’d want to tweak? Let us know below!
