“It’s really that simple.” Roblox explains its new IP licensing system

You’re no doubt aware that Roblox is a pretty big deal in the games industry. But you’d be forgiven for underestimating just how big.

“At our developer conference last year, we announced this fairly ambitious goal of

getting 10% of the global gaming content revenue flowing through the Roblox ecosystem,” says Greg Hartrell, senior director of product management at Roblox.

“We think we are in striking distance of doing this over the next few years.”

Roblox has grand plans to “enable the creation of anything, anywhere, by anyone,” he says, and a crucial ingredient of that plan is to allow users to make experiences based on various different intellectual properties (IPs).

Hence why Roblox has introduced a new, streamlined licensing platform that will allow outside firms to easily integrate their IPs into the Roblox system.

“Right now, we’re onboarding a select set of IP holders as we are learning about the product and how our community is reacting,” says Hartrell. The inaugural line up of IP holders includes Sega, Lionsgate, Netflix, and the Japanese manga publisher Kodansha, each offering a small number of properties for use within Roblox.

Anyone who wishes to add their IP has to go through an onboarding process, in which Roblox verifies that the company owns the IP and ascertains the scope of their copyright. Then, the firm defines a license for the use of the IP on the platform.

“The tools allow you to effectively take a template, standard licence, and customise it in a few simple ways,” says Hartrell, “setting a revenue share rate, setting content standards, and then defining some eligibility criteria. It’s really that simple.”

“The way that revenue share works with licences is you can set it anywhere from zero to 95%,” he adds. “You need not monetize. If you do monetize, the revenue share comes from the creator’s gross of proceeds after platform fees.”

Starting line-up

There’s a curious mix of IPs on offer in this first tranche. Some are pretty huge: Stranger Things and Squid Game are the jewels in the crown of Netflix, for example. But there’s the sense that other companies have been reluctant to roll out the big guns right away.

Lionsgate, for example, is offering Twilight, Now You See Me, and Divergent, but noticeably not John Wick. And Sega has Like A Dragon in its line-up, but Sonic is nowhere to be found.

Hartrell is quick to defend the choices. “Twilight, I don’t believe, has been offered as a game licence ever in its history,” he says.

“It would be fair to say that, yeah, [Sega is] starting with Like A Dragon, but I think it’s deliberate in the sense that they have a hypothesis that Roblox has a lot of battleground games and a lot of action RPGs, and […] it’s fit for purpose for the IPs.”

“We are obviously talking with these IP holders. They’re eager to add more IPs, and I think it’s more a function of logistics and where it’s easiest to, let’s say, start, versus being reluctant.”

The more adult nature of some of the initial IPs might come as a surprise considering how young the Roblox audience tends to skew. But Hartrell notes that they can be adapted to meet Roblox’s community standards, giving the example of Squid Game (“quite a mature IP”) being adjusted to fit a broader audience.

At this point, the watching PR jumps in to point out that the majority of Roblox users are over 13, and that brands can set age restrictions as part of their licensing – for example, only allowing age 13+ games to be made using certain IPs.

“IP holders are always in control here, so they can set their eligibility standards and decide what ultimately gets a licence,” agrees Hartrell.

But the thing about Roblox – and all games based around user-generated content (UGC) – is that there’s only so much control anyone can have about what users ultimately decide to make.

For companies more used to strictly controlled branding guidelines, the thought of letting people do as they will with their most precious IPs might be alarming. So what happens if players start using a company’s IP in ways that are deemed inappropriate?

“There’s a number of layers there,” says Hartrell. For a start, Roblox has its own content standards, prohibiting things like excessive violence and sexual content across the board, and IP holders can set the maturity rating for their IP. But they can also use a tool to scan for uses of their IP on Roblox and issue takedown notices for anything that crosses a line.

“Not all IP holders want to adopt that posture,” says Hartrell. “So another alternative here with the licensing tool is to say, hey, if you’re using my IP, I’m willing to offer you a licence, but then you additionally need to conform to my content standards.”

Creators would then agree to these additional content standards when they receive a licence.

“And I guess the last tool that we give IP builders is for every active licence that they have, they have the means to provide basically a change request, if you will. And from there, the platform facilitates contacting the creator, explaining what kind of change is needed to conform with the standards, and the creator gets some reasonable amount of time to make those changes.

“Any creator that doesn’t comply with that risks losing the licence, and the content could eventually be taken down.”

But isn’t this all a lot of additional work for IP holders, having to monitor and moderate the use of their IP on Roblox?

“I think it’s a fair question,” says Hartrell, although he says that many of the things IP holders might be concerned with would also tend to violate Roblox’s own content standards, and as such would be picked up anyway via a combination of AI scanning and human moderation.

But there might still be a small number of things IP holders are concerned about, he says. “For example, if you have a movie, [or] a TV IP, using the likenesses of real-world actors can be prohibited.” In that case, a creator might need to be asked to remove the likeness to be compliant.

Shopping for IP

From the Roblox user’s point of view, they can now simply browse through the license catalogue and pick something that interests them for their project. Then it’s a case of reading through the terms of the license, including the revenue share and eligibility criteria, and then accepting them.

After that, the license manager gets a notification that there’s a new applicant, and they have a chance to review the project by playing the applicant’s game or reading the description that the applicant provided of what the experience will be.

“At that moment in time, they can approve or reject it,” says Hartrell. “On approval, you get the licence immediately.”

“The only nuance there is we do allow for a creator to propose deferring monetization,” he adds – this is for cases in which the IP hasn’t yet been incorporated into the user’s experience.

Compared with the usual methods of acquiring IP rights, it’s incredibly streamlined. Hartrell notes that it would typically take months to negotiate an IP deal, but with Roblox’s new system, users can access an IP within days, and sometimes within hours.

“The streamlined process of applying really just simplifies it for a creator, so you don’t need a whole lot of business knowledge to be able to use really incredible IP.”

But then there’s that question again – how much work will this involve for IP holders, especially given Roblox’s vast audience? Will they be inundated with applications?

Hartrell is confident that Roblox’s tools will quickly flag any time-wasting applications for license managers. “There’s immediate data where they know that they can reject certain experiences,” he says.

“Once you approve a licence, everything’s automated in terms of collecting revenue share, communicating to the creator what the expectations are. And then, over time, we’re going to do even more.”

He notes that currently, Roblox uses an AI system to search for and flag the use of an IP in an experience. But in the future, he thinks that AI technology might be able to describe how an IP is being used, and “maybe even comment on how it conforms with your content standard.”

Do it yourself

In terms of what kinds of official assets creators receive access to after signing up to use an IP, the answer is… none.

“No assets are provided or required to be used,” confirms Hartrell. “But on Roblox, that ends up being a feature, in the sense that […] our creators are somewhat unbounded on how they can create.”

He likes to think of it as maximum creative expression. “That said, I think there’s a future where we can imagine providing a library of, let’s say, pre-approved assets, things that the IP holders are excited for creators to use. And I think I can imagine us supporting that sometime in the near future.”

The elephant in the room amid this discussion is that Roblox is already awash with creators using IP in a decidedly unofficial fashion, whether it’s for making, say, One Piece-adjacent brawlers or homages to their favourite TV series.

Now that Roblox is offering creators access to official IPs, does that mean they will have to police unofficial IP use more strictly?

Hartrell responds by saying that Roblox has to support IP holders according to whatever stance they want to take. He says they typically adopt one of three postures.

One is insisting that their IP cannot be used on Roblox at all. “We have IP holders who are like that,” says Hartrell. “They routinely look at the ecosystem, and they report content that’s […] infringing on their content, and we take it down immediately.”

The second is IP holders who have licensed their IP for specific use in certain Roblox experiences, but take a dim view of it being used elsewhere. Other companies, however, take a much more relaxed approach.

“Some IP holders, believe it or not, they don’t want to take down the content. They do want to call attention to the official content, but they’re very comfortable with fan-created or homage-based content. And I think this is where the licence manager comes in.”

Now, such companies can licence their IP at scale and “allow a thriving community of fan created content,” he says.

“I think Squid Game is probably the best example of that, where there’s just a wealth of different Squid Game inspired content that Netflix sees on the platform. And they’re pretty satisfied with the fan engagement.”

Going forward, the idea is to get a lot more companies involved beyond the initial four that have signed up to the license manager program.

“We’re thinking about how we scale,” says Hartrell. “Working with these initial set of partners [can] help us understand how we further streamline the workflow, understand how the creator community reacts, really working out the kinks, if you will.

“Eventually, we want to be able to say that any eligible IP holder can sign up, but it’ll be some time before we decide that.”

For now, the license manager is restricted to those select companies that Roblox approaches.

“We want to work with folks who understand the vision and are willing to say, ‘Yeah, there is a future where licenced IP on a UGC platform is a different type of licence, versus the historical game licensing models that we’ve seen over the last 30-40 years.”

In an interview with crypto news outlet The Block, Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, spoke about the company’s plans to become the largest Bitcoin miner in 2025. Tether has been one of the most profitable companies in the industry over the past years, and a lot of these resources have been used to improve its mining capabilities.

Tether To Dominate the Bitcoin Mining Industry?

According to Ardoino, the USDT stablecoin issuer has been trying to diversify into several key sectors. These include artificial intelligence, data centers, telecommunications, and Bitcoin mining.

The investment in the latter industry is part of a broad strategy to not only diversify into a key sector and generate further profits. Tether wants to become a main figure in the protection of the Bitcoin network.

Per The Block, the company has invested as much as $10 billion in the digital asset. Thus, by becoming a top miner, Tether makes sure its investment stays safe and that the BTC blockchain will not fall in the hands of a group of bad actors. Ardoino told The Block:

I think that is clear that if you have $1 million and you have to decide where to put it either in bitcoin mining or in buying bitcoin directly, you would always make more money buying bitcoin directly. But in our case, I think given the exposure that we have to bitcoin, it’s important to be part of the security of the network. Realistically, by the end of this year, Tether will become the biggest bitcoin miner out there.

Tether Faces Challenges

The company faces several obstacles in achieving this goal. The Bitcoin mining business has become one of the most competitive in the nascent industry with actors such as Marathon Digital Holdings, Riot Platforms, CleanSpark, and others controlling around 30% of the BTC hashrate.

Moreover, as the report claims, Tether is yet to disclose how much of the BTC hashrate they operate. Thus, making it difficult to determine where the stablecoin issuer stands against its competitors.

However, it has been determined that Tether has poured billions of dollars into improving its mining infrastructure. The company’s strong ties with Latin American governments, such as El Salvador, Uruguay, and Paraguay in over 15 facilities.

Danny Boyle Explains How ’28 Years Later’ Got its Creepy Poem

Before 28 Years Later’s release, you probably saw its trailers, which featured a recording of man performing a military chant alongside visuals of the film’s destroyed world and infected. That would be “Boots,” a 1903 poem by Jungle Book creator Rudyard Kipling (and performed by Taylor Holmes in 1915) inspired by the monotony of British soldiers marching hundreds of miles in southern Africa. But it’s not just in the trailers, it’s also in the film when Spike and his dad Jamie leave their isolated community for the infected-filled mainland.

Speaking to Variety, director Danny Boyle explained the team wanted something like a song or speech that could “suggest the culture that the island was teaching its children,” and one that “looked back to a time when England was great.” Such behavior, he continued, was “regressive” and “very much linked to Shakespeare,” in particular the Saint Crispin’s Day speech from Henry V, which tells of “the noble heroic English beating the French with their bows and arrows.”

During this search, Sony sent Boyle and writer Alex Garland the first trailer for 28 Years Later, and it was like a lightbulb moment. “We were like, ‘Fucking hell!’ It was startling in its power,” he recalled. “The trailer is very good, but there was something more than that about the recording [and] poem. We tried it in our archive sequence, and it was like it was made for it.”

“Boots” has been previously used by the US military in SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) schools, and that’s ultimately how it came to 28 Years Later. Megan Barbour, a music director at ad firm Buddha Jones, heard of the recording from a SERE trainee and later sent it to the film’s trailer editor. According to Sony’s David Fruchbom, that first trailer needed to “work off the strength of the visuals,” and Buddha ultimately gave them three versions to choose from—of those, the “Boots” one was “clearly the way to go.”

Audiences would certainly seem to agree, since fans have animated the 28 Years Later or used Holmes’ dramatic reading into videos for Star Wars or other films. Boyle called the entire situation a “reverse osmosis,” saying it “came into the film and seemed to make sense of so much of what we’d been trying to reach for. […] It’s amazing how it still maintains its impact.”

‘I’m sick of it’: James Gunn explains why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is no longer the DC comic book movie’s name

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is no longer the official name of the forthcoming DC comic book movie, James Gunn has revealed.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, the DC Studios co-chief confirmed the Milly Alcock-starring film will now go by a much shorter title: Supergirl.

The surprise announcement came right at the start of Rolling Stone’s profile piece on Gunn, which was conducted as part of the promotional campaign for the writer/director’s upcoming Superman film. Asked by the interviewer if he could clarify what Woman of Tomorrow is being referred to as these days, Gunn paused before saying: “I think it’s just called Supergirl.”

Elaborating on the title change, Gunn used Superman’s next big-screen outing, which was originally called Superman: Legacy, to explain why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘s name had been shortened.

“I’m always cutting [down project titles],” Gunn replied. “Legacy was really – we [DC Studios] do something called a premortem. A premortem is you get together with your group that’s doing the project. It’s usually about a couple months before shooting… [and] one of the things I brought up was, it [Gunn’s Superman movie] was [originally] called Superman: Legacy.

“Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure,” Gunn continued. “First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing. Also, it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward, even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it.'”

Woman of Tomorrow, but a title for today

It might pain some DC comic book fans to learn about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow‘s new, truncated titled. After all, the upcoming DC Universe (DCU) movie is basically adapting its eight-issue graphic novel namesake, which was created by comic book writer Tom King and drawn by Bilquis Eveley.

Nevertheless, in my view, renaming the DCU Chapter One film is the right decision. Supergirl has a much cleaner feel to it. Additionally, for non-DC comic devotees who don’t already know it’ll retell one of Kara Zor-El’s best stories in a live-action format, its new title maintains an air of mystery about what its plot will actually entail.

Then there’s the fact that, unlike more iconic DC heroes including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, there’s only been one other Supergirl movie: 1984’s Supergirl, which starred Helen Slater and is available to stream on Max. So the prospect of confusing viewers with an identically titled flick over 40 years on from the Maiden of Might’s silver screen debut shouldn’t be of major concern.

All in all, I’m pretty happy that Supergirl has dropped its subtitle. It certainly rolls off the tongue better than its previous moniker, but its title change does mean I’ll need to give my Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow guide a major overhaul. Lucky me, eh?

Supergirl will take flight in theaters worldwide on June 26, 2026.

This Ethereum (ETH) Chart Explains Everything

Ethereum is once again capturing attention across the market, and for good reason. On the daily chart, ETH has just confirmed a sustained move above the 200-day EMA, which is traditionally seen as a critical threshold between bearish and bullish cycles. This breakout could be laying the foundation for a broader push toward $3,000, with the current level near $2,500 acting more like a pit stop than a ceiling.

Recent price action shows ETH consolidating above multiple EMAs, and despite some choppy candles, bulls are holding their ground. The bounce from the 200 EMA was swift and backed by a noticeable uptick in volume, typically a sign of renewed market interest. The RSI is steadily climbing again from neutral territory, indicating there’s room for further upward momentum without immediately triggering overbought conditions.

The second chart, IntoTheCryptoverse’s long-term moving averages, gives this breakout even more significance. ETH is now sitting well above its 200-week SMA ($2,450), which historically has acted as a launchpad during bull cycles. Add to that the price being squeezed between the 50W and 100W SMAs, and it’s easy to see why a breakout above $2,700 could lead to a rapid acceleration toward the $2,800-$3,000 range.

However, there’s still a critical resistance barrier around $2,700. It’s not just a psychological level, it also aligns with the 50W SMA and previous price congestion zones from early 2024. If ETH manages to convincingly break through this wall, we are likely looking at the early stages of a medium-term bullish rally.

Ethereum is sending strong technical signals. The 200 EMA flip, robust support near $2,450 and alignment with historical long-term moving averages point to a potentially explosive upside, if the $2,700 resistance gives in. This chart does, in fact, explain everything.

Is Dogecoin Ready To Explode? Crypto CEO Explains Why A DOGE Rally Is Possible

The Dogecoin price has not quite been able to replicate its late-2024 form so far in 2025, trading below the $0.2 level for most parts of the year. After a somewhat rough start to the month of June, the meme coin appears to be recovering nicely, jumping above $0.18 on Friday, June 6.

Interestingly, the Dogecoin price seems to only be at the start of what is expected to be an extended upward rally. According to a blockchain firm CEO, the “king of meme coins” is about to witness a price explosion.

Four Reasons Why DOGE Price Is Ready To Take Off

In a June 6 post on the social media platform X, Alphractal CEO and founder Joao Wedson offered on-chain insights into why the Dogecoin price could be perfectly positioned to embark on a parabolic run. The crypto expert provided four reasons why investors should watch out for the DOGE token.

Firstly, the 500-day Aggregated Liquidation Level reveals that a large amount of liquidity ($350 million) was trapped around the $0.5 level the last time the DOGE price experienced a major correction. According to Wedson, the Dogecoin price tends to surge months after shorts pile up.

Wedson also highlighted that the price of Dogecoin against Bitcoin is closing in on a crucial technical level. As shown in the chart below, the DOGE/BTC is almost at a historical support — one which served as a bullish springboard to new highs in the 2021 cycle, with the meme token outperforming Bitcoin.

Furthermore, Wedson alluded to a broader catalyst for a potential performance of the Dogecoin price over the next few months. The crypto CEO mentioned that the Meme Index, containing 16 of the largest meme coins, is showing early recovery signs after a severe correction.

Finally, Wedson mentioned that the total meme coin market capitalization is far larger than in 2021, while the open interest is still at extremely low levels ($3.2 billion), and the daily volume is just around $12 billion. The low open interest suggests that the meme coin market condition is not overheated yet, with room for further upside growth.

Dogecoin Price At A Glance

As of this writing, the price of DOGE sits just beneath $0.18, reflecting a nearly 5% increase in the past 24 hours. This daily price action has done little to remedy the altcoin’s performance on the weekly timeframe. According to data from CoinGecko, the meme coin is down by more than 10% in the last seven days.

‘It’s really misleading’: Ballerina director Len Wiseman explains why the John Wick series’ new movie shouldn’t be called a spin-off film

Ballerina director Len Wiseman has rejected claims that the John Wick film franchise’s latest entry is a spin-off.

Speaking to TechRadar ahead of the movie’s release, Wiseman argued that it should actually be called a “spin-on” – i.e. a film that puts its own spin on a film franchise’s well-established formula.

Wiseman admits that very few people, if anyone, will have heard the phrase “spin-on” before. Nevertheless, he insists that the Ana de Armas-starring film is “fully connected” to the movie series’ other entries – and not just because Wick appears in it.

Ballerina‘s first trailer raised eyebrows about Wick’s inclusion. After all, at the end of John Wick Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves’ iconic hitman was – spoiler! – presumed dead. With John Wick 5 in early development, though, it’s likely that the well-dressed assassin hasn’t taken his last breath.

However, Ballerina takes place between John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum and its sequel, which is why Reeves’ gun-for-hire is, at this point on the John Wick timeline, still alive and kicking. For more on said timeline, read my guide on how to watch the John Wick movies in order.

But I’m getting off-track. With Ballerina set between Parabellum and John Wick Chapter 4, plus Reeves’ involvement in its story, the franchise’s latest entry should be viewed as the mainline series’ newest flick. It’s for that reason that Wiseman has coined the “spin-on” moniker for one of 2025’s highly anticipated new movies.

When I ask him if Ballerina should be labeled an “in-between-quel” – another industry term for a movie that’s set between two other films – Wiseman replied: “Yeah, it is. I’ve seen people call it a spin-off, which is really misleading.

“Ballerina’s events mostly run parallel to John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum. We’re really building out the world of John Wick, so it’s more of a ‘spin-on’ than a ‘spin-off’. I know that’s not a phrase, but it should be!”

Asked to explain how Ballerina explores the movies series colloquially known as the ‘John Wick universe’, Wiseman added: “One of the things that first attracted me to this film was the mythology of John Wick and how layered it is.

“Here, we’re able to dive deeper into that mythos and explore the Ruska Roma, who we’ve met in previous movies. Before, we’ve seen this group through John Wick’s eyes and his experiences [with them]. Now, we get to sift through the layers of their folklore, and try to balance that with what was previously established. We had a ton of fun with that and I think audiences will appreciate it.”

ASRock acknowledges and explains dying AMD 9000-series chips in its motherboards, rolls out a BIOS fix

Among many other descriptors, we could arguably call the last year one of hardware being pushed to the point of failure—think Intel CPU crashes, melting RTX 50-series power cables, and dying AMD Ryzen 9000-series CPUs on certain motherboards. We already had explanations for the former two, and it now looks like we might have an explanation for the 9000-series deaths, too.

ASRock has apparently told Tech YouTuber Tech Yes City that these 9000-series fatalities were caused by PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) being set too high. While the problems didn’t just seem to be occurring with ASRock boards, the majority did, so it’s relevant that ASRock is the company saying this.

As a reminder, we started hearing about these AMD Ryzen 9000-series CPU deaths, primarily on ASRock motherboards, early on in the year. At the time, ASRock said that reports of these deaths were “inconsistent” and issued a statement only about “boot issues and error codes,” not processor failures. A BIOS update to fix these “boot issues and error codes” was released.

Now, however, ASRock seems to be admitting there’s not only “inconsistency” to reports of CPU failures.

According to Tech Yes City, ASRock explains that the problem is with the amperage that the CPUs are being delivered by high-end ASRock boards. While the motherboard manufacturer says its EDC (Electrical Design Current) and TDC (Thermal Design Current) settings were within the range outlined by AMD, it claims the resulting amperage was too high for the CPUs and so it’s had to lower things somewhat.

PBO is a technology built into AMD processors that allows for automatic dynamic adjustment of power, voltage, and clock speed, based on temperature headroom and other such metrics. Just how much PBO pushes the chip can vary depending on motherboard current limits, and ASRock seems to be claiming that these limits were set too high in its high-end 9000-series motherboards despite the limits being within the range that AMD provided.

The solution, ASRock tells Tech Yes City, is to set these current limits to lower levels to match motherboards from other manufacturers such as MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte.

Tech Yes City had previously suggested that Ryzen CPUs were dying due to voltage spikes. ASRock motherboard amperage was actually lower than competitors’ in their testing, but it was spiking higher.

Whether this is AMD’s fault or ASRock’s is hard to say. On the one hand, if it’s true that ASRock was operating within the limits AMD had set out, it’s hard to put all the blame on the motherboard manufacturer. AMD has already said on the issue that it believes its chips are not dying, and in fact were no longer functioning due to memory incompatibility issues.

On the other hand, if other motherboard makers were already operating under lower limits that didn’t cause these problems, it must make us wonder whether ASRock could and should have known to do the same from the start.

Whatever the case, ASRock is apparently rolling out a BIOS update to fix the overly aggressive PBO limits. So, if you have a high-end 9000-series ASRock board, you should probably get downloading.

What isn’t yet clear is whether a processor that has already been used extensively within an affected motherboard will be permanently damaged or not. That was the case with Intel’s 13/14th Gen CPUs, which had to be replaced entirely. This matters not only for the short-term, but in the long-term. If any chip were to break down the line, outside of warranty, who is liable to replace it, AMD or ASRock? Is there an easy way to prove the damage, if any exists, to a chip from the motherboard?

Futher clarification on what this means for customers from both AMD and ASRock feels like an important next step.
