Exclusive: Mira Murati’s Stealth AI Lab Launches Its First Product

by admin October 2, 2025

Thinking Machines Lab, a heavily funded startup cofounded by prominent researchers from OpenAI, has revealed its first product—a tool called Tinker that automates the creation of custom frontier AI models.

“We believe [Tinker] will help empower researchers and developers to experiment with models and will make frontier capabilities much more accessible to all people,” said Mira Murati, cofounder and CEO of Thinking Machines, in an interview with WIRED ahead of the announcement.

Big companies and academic labs already fine-tune open source AI models to create new variants that are optimized for specific tasks, like solving math problems, drafting legal agreements, or answering medical questions.

Typically, this work involves acquiring and managing clusters of GPUs and using various software tools to ensure that large-scale training runs are stable and efficient. Tinker promises to allow more businesses, researchers, and even hobbyists to fine-tune their own AI models by automating much of this work.

Essentially, the team is betting that helping people fine-tune frontier models will be the next big thing in AI. And there’s reason to believe they might be right. Thinking Machines Lab is helmed by researchers who played a core role in the creation of ChatGPT. And, compared to similar tools on the market, Tinker is more powerful and user friendly, according to beta testers I spoke with.

Murati says that Thinking Machines Lab hopes to demystify the work involved in tuning the world’s most powerful AI models and make it possible for more people to explore the outer limits of AI. “We’re making what is otherwise a frontier capability accessible to all, and that is completely game-changing,” she says. “There are a ton of smart people out there, and we need as many smart people as possible to do frontier AI research.”

Tinker currently allows users to fine-tune two open source models: Meta’s Llama and Alibaba’s Qwen. Users can write a few lines of code to tap into the Tinker API and start fine-tuning through supervised learning, which means adjusting the model with labeled data or through reinforcement learning, an increasingly popular method for tuning models by giving them positive or negative feedback based on their outputs. Users can then download their fine-tuned model and run it wherever they want.

The AI industry is watching the launch closely—in part due to the caliber of the team behind it.

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios closing UK studio in workforce restructure, following cancellation of Xbox exclusive Contraband

by admin September 30, 2025

Avalanche Studios is the latest developer to be impacted by layoffs, as the company’s UK studio is set to be closed as part of a workforce restructure that will impact its Swedish studios too.

The studio is known for the Just Cause series (not to be confused with Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software, owned by Warner Bros.) and was previously working on an Xbox exclusive called Contraband.

However, that project was cancelled by Microsoft back in August, with the studio writing in a statement: “Active development has now stopped while we evaluate the project’s future.”

Contraband – Official Reveal Trailer 4K | E3 2021Watch on YouTube

In a statement shared by the company today, the decision to restructure has been made “in light of current challenges to our business and the industry”.

It continued: “This review had led us to the difficult conclusion that we must make changes to our staffing and locations. As a result, we are proposing to close our Liverpool studio, and to initiate a collective consultation process, as required by UK law. This will impact all Avalanchers in Liverpool. The changes will also impact our other studio locations in Malmő and Stockholm, where we will reduce our workforce and restructure the teams to address our games’ needs.”

It concluded: “Despite these changes, we remain deeply committed to providing amazing games to our passionate player communities.” The statement does not mention Contraband and its cancellation specifically.

Contraband, a co-op smuggling game, was revealed in June 2021 at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, but little of the game has been shown since. Its official trailer has been removed from the Avalanche website, though you can see IGN’s video above.

Its cancellation arrived in the wake of layoffs across Microsoft in July, which resulted in the cancellation of multiple projects including The Initiative’s Perfect Dark, Rare’s Everwild, and an unannounced ZeniMax MMO.

Microsoft CEO and chairman Satya Nadella later claimed “Microsoft is thriving”, largely due to its investments in AI.

Back in 2024, Avalanche Studios entered a collective bargaining agreement with Swedish unions, which was planned to go into effect by the second quarter of this year.

“Over the past years, we’ve taken significant steps toward making Avalanche one of the best workplaces in the games industry,” Avalanche CEO Stefanía Halldórsdóttir said at the time.

Final Fantasy Tactics Amazon Exclusive Edition Still Available For Release-Day Delivery

by admin September 29, 2025

Final Fantasy Tactics makes its triumphant return this week with an awesome enhanced edition called The Ivalice Chronicles. Still one of the greatest tactical RPGs of all time nearly 30 years later, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles earned a 9/10 in our review. If you haven’t preordered a copy ahead of its September 30 release, Prime members can still get release-day delivery for the Amazon Exclusive Edition on Nintendo Switch and PS5. Tactics has a free Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade with improved graphics and frame rates.

Final Fantasy Tactics – Amazon Exclusive Edition

Preorder at Amazon for:

The Amazon Exclusive Edition for Nintendo Switch and PS5 includes a double-sided poster in the box. The poster has character art on one side and the job class flowchart on the other. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles costs $50 regardless of where you buy the physical edition, so it makes sense to snag a copy from Amazon while it’s still available.

Since the poster is included in the box, this technically isn’t a preorder bonus. That said, Amazon Exclusive Editions of games have been known to sell out before launch or shortly after. Once that happens, the next batch of copies from Amazon likely won’t have the poster inside.

The revamped version of the classic turn-based tactics game is also getting a Square Enix Store-exclusive Collector’s Box for $200, but it sold out not long after preorders opened in June.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Preorder Bonuses

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Preorder Bonuses

All preordered copies of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, including the Amazon Exclusive Edition, come with several in-game items and consumables:

  • White Equipment for Ramza
  • Spiked Boots that increase Jump attribute
  • Mythril Knife (Weapon)
  • 10x High Potion
  • 10x Ether

$50 | Releases September 30

The physical edition of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles for Nintendo Switch and PS5 is also available to preorder at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and GameStop. Only Amazon is offering an additional bonus, though.

While the physical edition is only available for PS5 and Nintendo Switch 1/2, Final Fantasy Tactics will also launch digitally on PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, and PS4. This release strategy–physical editions for Nintendo and PlayStation platforms only–has become very common for Square Enix over the past couple of years.

$200 (no game) | $250 with the game

SOLD OUT

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is getting a jam-packed Collector’s Box that looks appropriately lavish for this all-time classic.

Here’s what you get with the Collector’s Box:

  • Special Art Box: Shown above, the box holding all of the merch has intricate character art against a decorative depiction of Ivalice in the background. Square Enix printed the artwork on matte-textured art paper.
  • Ramza Beoulve Figure (Akademy Version): It’s unclear how tall this figure is, but it is described as a “figure,” not a statue. That said, it does come with a base stand. Overall, this looks like a high-quality figure with vibrant colors and impressive attention to detail.
  • Mini Chocobo Plush Set: Adorable miniature plushies of the standard yellow Chocobo, Black Chocobo, and Red Chocobo. Each plush has an elastic loop, so you can connect it to a backpack or even your belt (if you’re especially cool).
  • Zodiac Stones Acrylic Magnet Set: All 12 Zodiac stones as acrylic magnets.
  • Outlying Church Pop-Up Diorama: A pop-up 3D display of the Outlying Church from the game. If you compare it to in-game screenshots, it looks like an faithful recreation.
  • Art Prints: Printed on glossy polypropylene (plastic) sheets, the three pieces of framable artwork feature: Ramza, a world map of Ivalice, and the key art that’s used for the standard edition of the remaster.

The Collector’s Box is available on its own for $200 or bundled with game for $250. If you choose the latter, the game will be packaged separately. This just means that the Collector’s Box is the same regardless of which choice you make, and the box, as shown above, doesn’t have a Nintendo Switch or PS5 logo on it. Since physical editions aren’t available for Xbox, PS4, or PC, a universal Collector’s Box makes sense.

You can check out all of the collectibles in the image below.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Collector’s Box

Final Fantasy Tactics is also getting a digital-only Deluxe Edition that includes the following in-game items:

  • Akademy Blade (Weapon)
  • Akademy Beret (Headwear)
  • Akademy Tunic (Combat Garb)
  • Ring of Aptitude (Accessory)
  • Black Equipment for Ramza
  • Red Equipment for Ramza
  • 10x Phoenix Down

New Marvel Legends Figures Are Bundled With Exclusive Spider-Man MTG Foil Cards

by admin September 28, 2025

Marvel Legends is crossing over with Magic: The Gathering’s new Spider-Man set with a series of action figures bundled with exclusive MTG foil cards. There are four different figures in the collection so far: Battle-Damaged Spider-Man, Agent Anti-Venom, Mary Jane Watson equipped with the Iron Spider costume, and Man-Wolf.

The Spider-Man Magic: The Gathering set launched today, September 26, but these figures/promo codes arrive over the next two weeks.

$40 | Releases October 10

This Spider-Man figure comes with a “Specactular Spider-Man” foil card that can give you a powerful advantage if you decide to sacrifice it. The figure features Spider-Man in a tattered version of his costume, and it comes with web-shooter, web-shield, and web-line accessories.

$40 | Releases October 2

The foil card included with this toy is “Agent Anti-Venom, Horrifying Healer” and it can bring back a target creature from the graveyard. This card can also deflect, and the action figure is an accurate replica of the powerful anti-symbiote character–the lore around him is way too much to get into right now. For accessories, Agent Anti-Venom comes with several sets of alternate hands, two blast effects, two smoke effects, tendrils, and a powerful arsenal of weapons.

$42 | Available Now

Now sporting a stylish costume that her former husband Spider-Man once wore, Mary Jane’s “Stark Upgrade” foil card can be tapped to add +1/+1 counters to all creatures and vehicles in your game. The figure features over 20 points of articulation and it comes with an alternate masked head, two “thwip” hands, and four articulated Iron Spider legs.

$59.89 | Releases October 2

John Jameson isn’t just an astronaut and the son of Daily Bugle boss J. Jonah Jameson, he’s also the fearsome Man-Wolf. His foil card features a transformative effect, allowing him to tap into primal powers. For his accessories, he’s armed with his sword Stargod, a bow, and several arrows.

A closer look at the included cards.

Ever since it started collaborating with big IP, Magic: The Gathering’s popularity has surged through the roof. The Marvel crossover could be the biggest one yet for the collectible card game, as it focuses not only on Spider-Man and his amazing friends, but also villains like Mysterio, Sandman, and Venom.

The Spider-Man Play Booster Box gets you 30 packs of 14 cards each for a total of 420 Spider-Man-themed MTG cards, and Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown Scene Box will give you three Marvel’s Spider-Man booster packs and two different sets of six scene cards. Other in-stock Spider-Man MTG products include the Spider-Man Bundle and Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown Scene Box.

Magic: The Gathering 2025 Crossover Sets:

Spider-Man is the second major Universes Beyond crossover set for Magic: The Gathering this year. The Final Fantasy set launched in June and is the most popular MTG set ever. In November, Avatar: The Last Airbender joins the MTG universe.

Amazon Restocks Exclusive Lego Formula 1 Collector’s Pack Six Months After Selling Out

by admin September 28, 2025

Collectors of Lego’s wide-ranging race car models and Formula 1 fans have another chance to buy the Amazon-exclusive 10-in-1 bundle that quickly sold out at launch earlier this year. The Lego Speed Champions: Ultimate Formula 1 Collector’s Pack has received a surprise restock six months after selling out. Released in March, this massive box set includes all 10 Lego Speed Champions F1 cars in the series and an exclusive poster. The Ultimate F1 Collector’s Pack retails for $270 and features 10 officially licensed race cars, 10 Lego minifigures, an exclusive poster, and a giant display box showcasing the 2,601-piece collection.

The bundle was only available for a few weeks after launch before it sold out. Prior to Amazon’s restock this month, there was no indication the bundle would return, but Amazon must have saved some units for the holiday season. In addition to this restock, Amazon has deals on a bunch of Formula 1 Lego sets across multiple collections.

$270 | Amazon Exclusive

Lego had released Formula 1 models before this year, but those were usually one-offs, whereas this year’s expanded partnership featured the 10 Speed Champions cars, a collection of Lego City playsets, new Technic display models, and even a “minifigure” with 12 mini F1 cars.

This year’s Lego Speed Champions F1 collection includes popular race cars from Aston Martin, Mercedes, McLaren, Ferrari, Williams Racing, and more. The race cars measure approximately 8 inches long and 3 inches wide. Piece counts range from 242 to 269.

We’ve listed all 10 cars included with the Ultimate Formula 1 Collector’s Pack below. Each set is also sold separately with a retail price of $27. It’s worth noting that buying each set separately would cost you about $242 at the moment due to Amazon offering small discounts on most of the cars.

Ultimate Formula 1 Collector’s Pack:

The aforementioned Lego F1 miniature race car collection is discounted at Amazon and Walmart right. Normally $30, the mystery boxes with six cars each are up for grabs for only $20. There are 12 cars to collect, and each box contains six different models. Just know that if you buy more than one, you’re likely to get duplicates.

More Lego Speed Champions F1 Cars

The Ultimate Collector Pack isn’t the first lego Formula 1 exclusive at Amazon. Last year, Amazon was the exclusive retail partner for the McLaren Racing Pack, a combo Speed Champions and Technic bundle with two cars and 697 pieces. The McLaren Racing Pack is officially retired but Amazon still has it in stock for $77. The McLaren Speed Champions F1 car that’s included is also available separately for $23. The Technic car in the bundle is actually Formula E, not F1, and it’s available for $40 (was $50) at Amazon. Both models in the bundle are pull-back cars.

The Lego Speed Champions Mercedes-AMG sports car and SUV bundle below isn’t Formula 1, but it’s worth highlighting here The 808-piece Speed Champions bundle is on sale for only $30.59.

Lego Technic Formula 1 Sets

Lego Technic: McLaren Formula 1 2022 Race Car (1,432 pieces)

For a different kind of small-scale F1 build, check out the Lego Technic Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Pull-Back Car for $21.55 (was $27). A large display model version of this car is also available for $209 (was $220). At the moment, the best deal on one of the bigger F1 Lego sets is the 1,432-piece McLaren Formula 1 2022 for $160 (was $200).

Lego City Formula 1 Sets

Lego City Formula 1 playsets

Lego released five Formula 1 playsets for younger racing fans in its Lego City series earlier this year. You can get an 86-piece McLaren Race Car for only $8 (was $13) and a two-car bundle featuring Williams Racing & Haas Race Cars for $16 (was $20). The latter is part of Lego’s preschooler series for kids ages four and up. Another cool option is the 322-piece Pit Stop & Pit Crew set for $24 (was $30). This playset comes with a Ferrari race car, interactive pit stop, five minifigures, and numerous swappable accessories.

Lego Icons Formula 1 Sets

Multiple Formula 1 drivers and their race cars have received their own Lego Icons sets. A minifigure of Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna and his McLaren MP4/4 are available in a 693-piece display model for $64 (was $80). A minifigure of former British driver Nigel Mansell and a Williams Racing FW114B F1 car are available for $80 in a 799-piece set.

Walmart has a Lego Speed Champions 5-in-1 Bundle

It’s not an F1 bundle, but racing fans should check out the Walmart-exclusive Lego Speed Champions Sports Car Bundle before it’s gone. This makeshift 5-in-1 bundle is up for grabs for $85 (was $135) until the end of the month–or until it sells out–as part of Bricktember at Walmart.

$85 (was $135)

Includes:

  • Ferrari F40 (76934) – $27 (318 pieces)
  • Nascar Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (76935) – $27 (328 pieces)
  • Audi S1 e-tron quattro (76921) – $27 (274 pieces)
  • Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision GT (76923) – $27 (230 pieces)
  • Ford Mustang Dark Horse (76920) – $27 (344 pieces)

Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s progression-helping boosts aren’t exclusive to Switch 2 and Xbox, will also arrive via patch for PS5 and PC

by admin September 27, 2025

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is set to release on Switch 2 and Xbox next January and will come with boost features familiar to players of the Pixel Remasters, known as Streamlined Progression.

Square Enix has confirmed to Eurogamer these boosts will also be coming to the PS5 and PC versions of the game in a future update, though there’s no date yet. The PC version’s enhanced lighting features will be coming to PS5 too.

As outlined previously in a Square Enix blog, players will have access to a new menu where they can implement a number of boosts such as HP full, MP full, Limit gauge full, and maximum damage dealt, which can be toggled individually.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE – Release Date Announcement – Nintendo Switch 2Watch on YouTube

“I feel that the way people enjoy content has become more flexible these days, as we see with video streaming platforms, and that people also want the same thing from games, with options to tailor the experience based on the time they have and their levels of interest,” said director Naoki Hamaguchi. “I have also had personal experiences where I wanted to play something with the limited time I have but gave up because of the time it takes to level up characters or traverse the game.

“That’s exactly why I think that the Streamlined Progression feature is very effective – to give players smooth access to the story.”

Meanwhile, Hamaguchi stated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is “doing very well” on PS5 and PC in an interview with Automaton, so there’s no need to worry about part three.

For its remake of Final Fantasy 7, Square Enix decided to create a trilogy. But as sales appear to have decreased with each installment, some fans have been worried about the quality of the third game, presuming the company may be keen to move on.

“I know some fans have expressed concerns, but please rest assured, we’ll be able to deliver a proper, high-quality third installment,” said Hamaguchi.

He additionally provided a status update on the project.

“Development is going extremely well, and the game is shaping up nicely,” he said. “A lot of the content is already playable, and the game’s direction and form are firmly set in place. Right now, the team is united around refining everything.”

For now, the game remains without a release date, but as Remake is heading to Switch 2 and Xbox in January, and Square Enix has confirmed the whole trilogy will be coming to both platforms too, the final part presumably won’t be released until after then. Perhaps it’ll even be a simultaneous multiplatform release.

Indeed, the multiplatform release of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project will certainly boost sales, helping to counter any decline in sales.

Speaking to Windows Central, Hamaguchi declared himself an Xbox fan. “I’m going to do my best to make sure that Square Enix can continue to reach a wider audience, including Xbox,” he said. “So thank you from me as well.”

He also discussed optimising the game for the Xbox Series S, which is notoriously tricky due to its lower specs.

“In terms of hardware specs, I would say the Xbox Series S is actually quite solid in terms of spec,” said Hamaguchi. “We didn’t come across much of a processing challenge, but many of the challenges were more memory related.

“Optimisation is something we were strongly cognizant of as we worked on the PC version as well. For Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we took some of the philosophies found in Nanite for Unreal Engine 5 and created our own solution for Unreal Engine 4. We were successful in delivering stable graphics there, and gain Steam Deck verification as well. We have been pretty proud of what we were able to achieve, even on lower spec systems.”

Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has hinted that game may also be headed to Switch 2.

Here’s Sony’s Next Exclusive Sci-Fi Death Trap, Saros

by admin September 25, 2025

Sony opened its September State of Play with our first gameplay look at Saros, the next big PS5 game from Returnal makers Housemarque. It’s set to arrive on March 20, 2026 exclusively on PS5 and will be “enhanced” on PS5 Pro. Like Returnal, it’s a fast-paced third-person roguelike sci-fi shooter built around players dying over and over while getting stronger with permanent upgrades.

Here’s the new Saros gameplay trailer that just premiered during State of Play. The upcoming sci-fi game stars Rahul Kohli as Arjun Devraj and looks just as wild and frenetic as Returnal.

And here’s the game’s official description:

Arjun Devraj, a Soltari enforcer, fights to survive on the lost colony of Carcosa under an ominous eclipse. Shape-shifting biomes and hostile ruins set the stage for a fast-paced, cinematic action experience where every encounter demands precision and adaptability. Combat unfolds as a fluid dance of dodges, shields, and parries, paired with a high-tech arsenal built of human and alien weaponry. Master enemy patterns, evolve your strategy, and face off against spectacular bosses that push every skill to the edge. Death is not the end, with permanent upgrades, evolving equipment, and the “Second Chance” system that allows you to always come back stronger.

PlayStation 5 owners have been wondering what 2026’s exclusive release calendar will look like, and with Saros, it looks like Sony is starting the year off strong with what appears to be another exciting and likely tough-as-nails third-person roguelike shooter from a team that has been consistently knocking it out of the park for three decades. Will Saros match the success of Helldivers 2, the sci-fi shooter that kicked of Sony’s 2024? Probably not, but either way, I’m excited to get my hands on Saros in March of next year.

“He’s the real deal” – Chatty, energetic, unpolished, but still the same man: Meet gaming’s exclusive James Bond, played by Dexter’s Patrick Gibson

by admin September 3, 2025

While it admittedly was plainly obvious to anyone who has seen his face on TV or in film, Danish developer IO Interactive has now made it official: their video game exclusive iteration of the world famous Agent 007 is to be played by Irish actor Patrick Gibson.

Let’s get the obvious facts and figures out of the way first. Gibson is the seventh actor to portray Bond in a visual medium product endorsed by MGM and EON, the stewards of the cinematic franchise. Gibson has a range of impressive credits, but his most high-profile is arguably his most recent, playing a young Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Original Sin. Gibson is the second Irish actor to take on the mantle of Bond, and will go into the record books as the second youngest Bond – he’ll be 30 when he makes his debut in 007: First Light.

“What he brings is energy,” explains Martin Emborg, First Light’s cinematic and narrative director, who naturally played a key role in casting and then directing Gibson.

“A lot of the time the cinematic artists will start with a long lens shot, and he’s always moving. He’s so dynamic. He has this impatience to him. He’s not someone who can sit in a chair and be extremely calm. Which is great, because that’s a key part of his personality.”

Gibson’s casting is central to the single most important decision IO Interactive made, in tandem with MGM, for First Light. This is a young Bond, and though Gibson himself is not that different in age to Connery or Lazenby in their debuts (32 and 29, respectively), he does present a different image of Bond. First Light sees players follow the agent as a true rookie, following a modern version of author Ian Fleming’s origin of the character: orphaned, a challenging career in the Royal Navy, and then recruitment to MI6’s Double-0 program.

Image credit: IO Interactive / MGM

Like the literary versions of the character, in an early look at First Light during a tour of IO Interactive’s Copenhagen development headquarters, Gibson’s Bond appears to be a jumble of delightful contradictions. He is something of a loner, for instance – the late-joining outcast among a crop of young Double-0 candidates tasked with training and working together. But he’s also already partly the Bond we know – slick, instinctive, and socially suave. He’s still witty and funny, obviously, though in a more wry way rather than eyebrow-quirking seventies stuff. Gibson’s performance will be tasked with carrying much of this.

“You could probably find a lot of impatient, energy-filled people,” Emborg admits. “But Patrick balances that out with a gravity and a great kind of… he has a beyond-his-years quality to him.

“I remember we saw, obviously, we saw a lot of tapes, we did a lot of test tapes and stuff like that. The first time I got in a room with him… I’d seen him on video, but being in the room with him I was just like – yeah, he’s the real deal. And that’s not super quantifiable. It’s just a feeling that you get.”

This I believe whole-heartedly. Bond is one of those unique media characters – in British literature probably among only three – who in many ways transcend what is on the page across multiple interpretations, specifically to embrace the nature of the person playing them. James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, The Doctor – you don’t just cast an actor as these characters – you cast these characters as the actor, and the actor’s personality and predilections then become indelibly mixed with the character on the page, who is part blank-slate by design. You only need to see the difference between the Cumberbatch and Downey Jr. versions of Sherlock Holmes to sense this. Or Tennant and Capaldi in the TARDIS. Or the crooked eyebrows and gleeful smirks of Moore to the brutal nihilism of Craig’s Bond.

Gibson now joins that list with his own interpretation that’ll doubtless be very ‘him’ – so it’s no surprise that the casting flew partially on vibes. His Bond differs on age, but there’s more to him than that, of course. He’s chattier than his filmic peers, for a start – but not by too much.

“To some extent, these are smart characters where there’s an economy to the way that they talk,” Emborg notes, which to me suggests writing that will channel Fleming’s economical and spartan prose of the books.

“So, they’re not chatterboxes. But he talks more than Bond usually does. Bond usually has, like, a single line and then punches someone,” Emborg laughs. Gibson will be doing a little more than that, but “there’s still an economy to it. And I just think Patrick is someone who can take the text, internalise it, and figure out how to say the things we’re saying. It was very inspiring.”

Gibson will have faced a similar audition process to recent screen Bonds, in a sense. Bond production studio EON has a set template, where candidates for the role record the iconic casino scene from GoldenEye which ticks a lot of boxes – glib needling of a villain, flirting, ordering a vodka martini, saying ‘Bond, James Bond’, cool detachment. Recently some tapes leaked showing the likes of buff one-of-us nerd Henry Cavill and The Boys’ Anthony Starr performing this scene in 2005, competing with Daniel Craig. The top candidates went on to more specific sides for the project in question – in this case, scenes depicting a younger Bond and testing chemistry with the actors up for parts as reimagined versions of Bond’s key allies.

Joining Gibson is Priyanga Burford as M, the head of MI6. British TV fans will know Burford from an impressive string of dramas. Burford’s M is intended to somewhat mirror Bond as a younger take on the character who is new to her job. “She enters the role expected to be a temp,” Emborg reveals, “But she turned out to be really efficient and very good at her job. She has this easy authority, but there’s a kind of kindred spirit relationship with Bond being a young man that enters this training program while not necessarily the one everyone expects to succeed.”

MI6’s gadget-toting Quartermaster is played by Alastair Mackenzie, another staple actor in British TV, stage, and film. His closest brush to gaming was a role in a 2013 movie version of Company of Heroes – but many in the nerd sphere will now know him as Perrin, Mon Mothma’s inutile husband in Star Wars’ Andor. Q has been reimagined this time not just as the guy who gives Bond gear, but as an impeccably-dressed key influence on this younger Bond in the matters of style. “Our Q is very sartorial,” Emborg says. “There’s a reason that the Q watch is an Omega and the Q car is an Aston – you know, you have to have standards.”

Moneypenny is yet another familiar face on British TV in Kiera Lester. Moneypenny is a field analyst this time, rather than just M’s secretary. This means she’s the voice you’ll hear most often – delivering pre-mission briefs and always in Bond’s ear mid-assignment, a vital source of information, an ally, and a friend. IO clearly channels its experience of the relationship between Agent 47 and handler Diana Burnwood here. “The friendship and easy chemistry they have is really what transports you through the story,” Emborg adds.

Further, we have confirmation that John Greenway is played by Lennie James, perhaps best known for The Walking Dead and Line of Duty, and to gamers as Destiny’s Lord Shaxx. Greenway is a vital new character, the last remaining Double-0 agent in MI6 after the program was shut down a decade or so before the events of First Light. He’s now tasked with rebooting the section with young recruits. “He’s the stern mentor who will put Bond through his paces,” reveals Emborg. “But he’s a great spy in a traditional sense. There’s more of a Cold War air about him.”

Finally, at least for now, is the reveal of Ms. Roth, aka ‘Isola’ – the female lead. Noémie Nakai is bringing this French intelligence agent to life – and she has a string of TV and film credits to her name, both in French and English productions. Many will know her from a turn in Tokyo Vice – and some gamers might recognize her voice from Grid Legends, where she was an announcer.

The idea, various developers explain, is that these key characters around Bond will help form who he is – sculpting this young Royal Navy lad into the suave, sophisticated, and unstoppable agent we know him as. The most obvious example is Q, of course – this is a man who wears a cravat under his labcoat, and he’s going to smarten up this lad by hook or by crook. But each of the core cast of the game will have a role to play in helping to shape Gibson’s Bond, including those above plus a mysterious mask-wearing villain who IO hasn’t yet confirmed the actor of. That villain’s mask, in particular, sure feels like it’s hiding some sort of shocking casting secret.

The need for a new Bond and a new world for IO to play in was obvious. Daniel Craig’s era was hurtling towards its close as IO began work on this game, for a start. But also, being free of whatever the film franchise decides to do is a creative liberation. IO wants to be true to Bond, but also leave its fingerprints on the franchise. Plus, there is a market opportunity too.

“Part of the challenge is like, does a 17, 19, 21-year-old… do they know Bond?” asks IO co-owner and First Light director Hakan Abrak. “They’ve heard about it, right. But do they have that same experience – that I saw that with my dad, I grew up with this experience? Maybe not to the same degree, right?”

It’s a fair point. When I was growing up, there was a Bond film every two to three years. The character was everywhere in my formative years. With less frequent films, today’s young likely know the character less well. So the concept with this new version is a version of Bond for those people, even if some existing fans are left wrinkling their nose in distaste at the choice. Abrak recalls Daniel Craig’s casting, where fans raised petitions and designed websites screaming that he was a terrible choice.

“That’s the beauty of it. It’s an IP that invites discussion, that invites sharing your story or what you like,” Abrak says. Gibson is a new Bond for a new generation, though IOI of course hopes that existing fans also come along for the ride. “Ultimately, we hope this is a way for a new audience to get acquainted with this fantasy. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

As in any good Bond story, the agent is the sun around which everything else orbits. In a video game there’s more than just an actor to worry about – animation, sound design, even how the blend of motion capture and hand animation catches the character’s unique ambulation. First Light is very different to IO’s work on Hitman in many ways, but one key way is in how the protagonist moves – where 47 is stiff and deliberate, 007 flows like a surging river. Only part of that is from Gibson, of course – but the team at IO seems convinced they’ve nailed finding their man.

“It’s impossible to overstate what he brings,” says Emborg. “What they do – when you have Lenny James and Patty together on stage… it’s that energy. You go, wow. Why do I have goosebumps right now? They’re not even saying anything, but they’re doing something.”

I consider myself a pretty discerning Bond fan. It wasn’t until I actually saw Casino Royale that Craig won me over, even (though I was never enough of a moron to sign a petition on sight alone). But I can say that even having just seen a few glimpses of him, this new 007 has me largely convinced. By going younger, shifting away from the known parameters of the character, IO has created space within which to operate – and thrillingly, Gibson seems to be the right man to fill in those gaps.

Exclusive: Funko Launching Classic Mega Man Funko Fusion Figure With Chase Variant Version

by admin August 24, 2025

Funko Fusion didn’t set the world on fire when it released last year, but at least it’s giving us some cool Funko collectibles. We’ve already seen figures based on Battlestar Galactica, Shaun of the Dead, and The Thing, and soon we can add Mega Man to that list. The Mega Man Funko Fusion figure is now available to preorder for $15 ahead of its December 27 release date. The figure will come in a standard version that captures the hero’s original blue design, and a rare Chase variant that gives the character a zombified makeover. Alongside the Blue Bomber, Funko also announced Funko Fusion figures based on Colonel Sanders, Invincible, and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

$15 | Releases December 27

This new Mega Man Funko Fusion vinyl figure features Capcom’s retro icon in his classic blue armor and helmet, with a blue energy blast firing from his arm cannon. Like all Funko Pops, this one does not have any articulated joints, but it should make for a fun addition to your game room or home office. If you’re lucky, you might land the Chase variant of the Mega Man Funko Fusion, which “zombifies” the character, turning his eyes white, his skin pale, and adding flecks of green goo across his armor. Like all Chase variants, there’s about a 1/6 chance to find it.

Mega Man Funko Fusion Standard and Chase Variants

The vinyl is arriving alongside the Funko Fusion: Deluxe Edition video game, which adds several new, exclusive characters to the game. Our Funko Fusion review gave it a 4/10, though folks looking for a quirky cooperative game with constant references to pop culture icons will probably find something to enjoy about the adventure. The main reason to pick up this new $40 Deluxe Edition is for all the new playable characters from several popular movies and TV shows. Here’s a look at the new characters in the Deluxe Edition:

  • Wicked: The Wizard, Madame Morrible, Elphaba, Glinda, Prince Fiyero, and Shiz variants of Elphaba and Glinda
  • Universal Monsters: Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Wolf Man
  • The Office: Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam

The Funko Fusion standard edition is also available for $20 on PS5, PS4, Switch, and Xbox Series X. While the base version lacks the additional content and characters from the new Deluxe Edition, it does include Mega Man in its playable roster.

Funko Fusion Colonel Sanders, Freddy Fazbear, and Invincible features

As mentioned above, Mega Man is just one of several new Funko Fusion figures launching in December. You can preorder new vinyl collectibles based on KFC mascot Colonel Sanders–wielding a chicken-launching cannon, no less–that also comes in an all-gold Chase variant. He drops on December 9, alongside a new Invincible figure that has a blood-spattered chase variant. Following those two, a new Funko Fusion Freddy Fazbear wielding a pizza launcher drops on December 27 with a zombified Chase variant. Preorders for all these new figures are available for $15 apiece at Amazon.

There are several other figures available in the lineup that are available now, including classic heroes like He-Man, or villains like the Cylon robots from Battlestar Galactica. Fans of the Cornetto Film Trilogy can add Shaun from Shaun of the Dead or Nicholas Angel from Hot Fuzz to their shelves, while fans of creatures and monster movies can pick up the mutant Indominus Rex dinosaur or the grotesque monster from The Thing.
