Breaking: Ethereum (ETH) Suddenly Hits New ATH for the First Time Since 2021

by admin August 23, 2025

  • Nearly $300 million worth of shorts get wiped out
  • $5,000 in sight?

Flagship altcoin Ethereum (ETH) has reached a new record high for the first time in nearly four years.

The token hit a new record peak of $4,885 at 21:08 UTC on the Bitstamp exchange, surging by more than 15% in a single day.

In the meantime, Bitcoin’s dominance has now plunged to just 56.5%, according to CoinGecko data.

As reported by U.Today, ETH’s monster surge came after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell explicitly signalled that there would be a rate cut next month.

Nearly $300 million worth of shorts get wiped out

CoinGlass data shows that a whopping $287 million worth of shorts have been liquidated over the past 24 hours. For comparison, only $67 million worth of Bitcoin shorts got wiped out over the same period of time.

A $10 million ETH liquidation order took place on the OKX exchange earlier today.

$5,000 in sight?

According to Polymarket bettors, ETH now has a 74% chance of hitting the much-coveted $5,000 level this August.

In fact, there is a 29% chance of the flagship altcoin surging all the way to the $5,400 level during the last week of this August.

The odds of ETH hitting $10,000 in 2025 currently stand at 16% on Polymarket.

XRP Must Grow: RSI Says So, Bitcoin (BTC): Catastrophic Signal? Ethereum (ETH): $5,000 in September?

by admin August 23, 2025

  • Bitcoin’s divergence
  • Ethereum not empty

After dropping below its rising trendline, which indicates a deterioration in short-term momentum, XRP is now at a pivotal point. XRP is now trading at about $2.86, having lost ground above the crucial support trendline that once directed its rally.

Although indicators suggest that buyers may be losing ground, a recovery is still possible if momentum picks back up. The Relative Strength Index (RSI), which is currently trading just below 40, is one of the best indicators. Usually, this level means that the asset is approaching oversold territory, where selling pressure might start to wear off. Notable rebounds have frequently been preceded by similar RSI readings in previous XRP cycles.

XRP/USDT Chart by TradingView

Given that the market is at a technical crossroads, the RSI indicates that a relief rally may be possible in the upcoming sessions. This mixed picture is further compounded by the consistent drop in trading volume. Since there is less conviction behind the sell-off, a relatively small amount of buying pressure could reverse the momentum and push it back upward, as indicated by the decreased participation.

In order to regain the ascending structure and pursue additional recovery, XRP may need to regain the $2.95-$3.00 zone. But hazards still exist. Now a crucial battleground, the 50-day EMA is situated just below current prices. A breakdown below this level might hasten losses in the direction of the 100-day EMA, which is located at $2.74. This area might serve as a last line of defense prior to more significant corrections.

All things considered, the XRP chart shows weakness, but not surrender. Bulls may soon have a chance to recover lost ground if the oversold RSI reading indicates that the downside momentum may soon stall. It is still possible for XRP to recover if volume increases and stays above its moving averages.

Bitcoin’s divergence

In addition to showing a pronounced bearish RSI divergence, the top cryptocurrency recently broke below its 50-day EMA, a historically significant support level. This pattern indicates that even though the price reached a new all-time high earlier this month, the underlying momentum has been gradually eroding.

This is a risky situation that frequently occurs before lengthy corrections. Because the divergence reflects market conditions observed in June 2022, when a similar setup preceded a deep and prolonged sell-off, it is especially concerning. Even though price action initially looked bullish, the RSI trended lower in both instances as the price pushed higher, indicating that buyers were losing strength. The final collapse resulted in a series of liquidations, and the state of the market now suggests that history may repeat itself.

You Might Also Like

The apparent drop in trading volume strengthens the bearish argument. Usually, a declining volume trend during a retracement indicates that there is not enough demand at the current price levels. Given that Bitcoin is currently trading just above the 100-day EMA at $110,600, the likelihood of further declines increases in the absence of strong buyer support. The 200-day EMA, at about $103,500, might be the next crucial line of defense if this level gives way.

RSI is another warning sign, as it is currently approaching the neutral 40 zone. If it falls below 40, bearish dominance would be strengthened, which could hasten the downward trend. The market is delicately balanced in light of this, and further selling pressure could trigger a further decline.

Ethereum not empty

With Ethereum displaying resilience once more, there is conjecture that a run toward $5,000 might occur as early as September. ETH had to undergo a necessary correction after weeks of sharp increases, cooling off from its peak around $4,800. Crucially, the correction happened under control, with ETH recovering from the 26-day EMA and remaining above $4,200, a level that traders are currently targeting as short-term support. Corrections are frequently seen as a way to cool down markets, and Ethereum appears to have done so successfully.

While the recent pullback cleared out speculation and excess leverage, volume patterns indicate that sellers are waning as buyers gradually regain control. The technical room for another leg higher has been created by the RSI’s normalization after it had previously entered overbought territory. The self-driven correction in ETH’s setup is what makes it so interesting. Instead of being a panic-driven sell-off, Ethereum’s decline was more of a consolidation phase than a sudden market-wide crash. Usually a bullish sign, this type of behavior indicates that the asset is stabilizing before continuing on its current course.

You Might Also Like

The likelihood of Ethereum retesting $4,800 increases if it keeps its footing above $4,200 and buyers keep intervening. A run toward the psychologically significant $5,000 mark would then be possible if that resistance zone were broken. Ethereum is the focus of renewed investor interest as Bitcoin consolidates and altcoin momentum increases.

Even though there are no guarantees in the cryptocurrency space, the charts indicate that ETH has established a stronger base for future growth. Ethereum may finally make the much-awaited move above $5,000 in September.

Ethereum Treasury SharpLink to Buy Back Up to $1.5 Billion in Stock

by admin August 23, 2025

In brief

  • SharpLink Gaming unveiled $1.5 billion in potential stock buybacks.
  • The company traded at a slight premium to its Ethereum holdings.
  • SharpLink’s stock price surged more than 15% on Friday to $20.83.

SharpLink Gaming can repurchase up to $1.5 billion worth of common stock under a newly authorized repurchase program, the Ethereum treasury firm said in a blog post on Friday.

With a market cap of $3.5 billion, that would be almost half of the company’s value, but Co-Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chalom described the program as a potential resource for instances when the company’s shares trade a discount to its Ethereum holdings.

“In this scenario, the accretive course of action may be to repurchase our common stock,” he said in a statement. “This program provides us with the flexibility to act quickly and decisively if those conditions present themselves.”

SharpLink shares surged more than 15% on Friday to $20.87 amid a wider upturn in crypto-focused stocks, according to Yahoo Finance, as investors turned optimistic about the prospects of an interest rate cut following remarks by U.S. central bank Chair Jerome Powell. But SharpLink’s stock price has swooned 24% over the past month even as Ethereum has gained ground.

Ethereum was recently changing hands at $4,813, jumping more than 13% over the past 24 hours, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. Earlier Friday, ETH set a new record high of $4,879 before retreating. The asset’s price has increased about 35% over the past month.

Like most crypto treasury firms, SharpLink seeks to maximize shareholder value by growing the amount of Ethereum it owns per fully diluted share. When SharpLink shares trade at a premium to its crypto holdings, it can issue common stock to increase that ratio.

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, has used the tactic for years, but its premium has been substantially greater and existed far longer. On Friday, SharpLink had a so-called mNAV of 1.08, reflecting a slight premium, according to Ethereum Strategic Reserve.

SharpLink owned 740,000 ETH worth over $3.5 billion, as of Friday. Its corporate stash was around half the size of BitMine Immersion Technologies’, which owned 1.5 million ETH that were worth around $7.3 billion.

In the press release, SharpLink noted that the timing and amount of shares repurchased under its newly approved program will depend on market conditions. It’s not obligated to purchase any shares whatsoever, and the initiative can be suspended at any time, it added.

Ethereum Hits All-Time High Price After Nearly 4 Years

by admin August 22, 2025

In brief

  • Ethereum hit a new all-time high price, breaking a record set back in 2021.
  • The second-biggest cryptocurrency had lagged behind Bitcoin in gains, and long lingered well short of its previous peak.
  • Institutional adoption and a favorable regulatory landscape have helped the coin in recent months.

Ethereum hit a new all-time high price on Friday, breaking a nearly four-year record following recent gains fueled by surging ETH treasuries, an increasingly favorable regulatory environment for the protocol, and growing interest from traditional finance firms.

The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap is up 15% over the past 24 hours to $4,879, surpassing its previous record of $4,878 set in November 2021, data from CoinGecko shows.

ETH has more than doubled in price over the last two months to outpace even Bitcoin as investors flood into the exchange-traded funds. After coming close to a new record on August 14, the price of ETH dipped alongside the rest of the market, dropping to under $4,100 earlier this week.

But on Friday, crypto prices broadly surged following Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s comments, which appeared to suggest potential for an interest rate cut ahead. Ethereum jumped by nearly 8% in an hour after the comments, and continued to tick up afterwards.

“It’s finally ETH’s moment to shine: record ETH ETF inflows and the launch of large ETH digital asset treasuries, coupled with broader ecosystem success—Circle and Bullish IPOs, and Trump’s executive order allowing digital assets in 401(k)s,” Brian Huang, co-founder of on-chain automation platform Glider, wrote in an email to Decrypt. “Jerome Powell’s dovish speech today hinting a rate cuts was the final push ETH needed.”

Huang added: “Sentiment in the trenches for ETH is strong as well. Layer-2s like Base continue to grow, and ETH still bodes the most DeFi liquidity by a factor of 9x above the second, Solana. We’re still in the early innings here for ETH, the world’s global settlement layer.”

The recent Ethereum boom has been fueled in part by growing ETF demand. Last week, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs collected over $1 billion in inflows in a single day for the first time since they started trading in July 2024. And Ethereum funds have been outpacing Bitcoin ETFs with gains, though conversely, they’ve also bled out faster on down days.

The gains have dovetailed with rise of companies that have gobbled up Ethereum as their primary mission. In recent weeks, Bitcoin miner BitMine Immersion has grown its holdings to more than $7 billion, while SharpLink Gaming, which pivoted from online marketing, has accumulated more than $3.5 billion worth of the coin.

Such companies are following in the footsteps of Bitcoin treasury company Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), which started buying the largest cryptocurrency by market cap in 2020 to pump its stock. The move has inspired dozens of followers, who have started expanding into other assets like Ethereum, Solana, and BNB.

“There are a lot of tailwinds behind ETH at moment,” said Strahinja Savic, head of data and analytics at crypto-focused financial services and advisory firm, FRNT Financial. “Record ETH ETF inflows and aggressive buying from treasury companies are offering tangible demand.”

“On top of this, Ethereum is at the center of several key themes that are garnering the attention of traditional financial institutions,” he continued. “These include tokenization of traditional assets and stablecoins. These are major economic themes, and Ethereum is emerging as a strong candidate to host this new influx of capital and interest.”

Ethereum also received a boost this month when the SEC clarified its guidance on staking, as Ethereum users have long sought from the securities regulator.

Former President Joe Biden administration’s more restrictive policies had resisted allowing this feature, but under President Donald Trump, the regulator said that liquid staking services can pay out staking rewards to customers without registering with the agency.

Last month’s passage of the GENIUS Act also boosted Ethereum’s prospects. The legislation provides a U.S. regulatory framework for issuing stablecoins. Developers of these projects overwhelmingly use the Ethereum blockchain for their projects. Most stablecoins are pegged to the value of the U.S. dollar.

“Ethereum’s new all-time high is a clear sign of investor demand beyond just Bitcoin,” Samir Kerbage, chief investment officer at crypto asset manager Hashdex, wrote in a message to Decrypt. “As Ethereum and other smart contract platforms provide the infrastructure for many of crypto’s most mature use cases, including stablecoins and tokenization, we anticipate continued strong demand for this emerging asset class.”

The odds that Ethereum climbs past $5,000 this year have jumped in the past day on Myriad Markets. The prediction market now shows a roughly 85% probability that the token will reach that threshold in 2025.

(Disclosure: Myriad is a prediction market and engagement platform developed by Dastan, parent company of an editorially independent Decrypt.)

In a note last week, U.K. bank Standard Chartered raised its Ethereum price target to $25,000 by 2028, a major shift from March forecasts that predicted a structural decline for the world’s second-largest crypto.

“We raise our price forecasts, as the backdrop for ETH has improved dramatically in recent months,” the bank’s Global Head of Digital Assets Research, Geoff Kendrick, wrote.

Ethereum (ETH) Surges to New All-Time High Amid Likely September Rate Cut

by admin August 22, 2025

Ethereum ETH$4,274.64 hit a record price of $4,885 on Coinbase on Friday after a speech by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggesting interest rate cuts left traders relieved going into the weekend.

The token rose nearly 15% over the past 24 hours as part of a broader rally in financial markets.

Nevertheless, ether’s rally stood out among other tokens. Bitcoin was also up, but only by about 4%. The CoinDesk 20 Index, which tracks the broader crypto market, rose 9% over the same period.

Powell on Friday gave hints that the Fed will indeed cut interest rates in September, as initially anticipated by traders. Hope, however, faded over the last few days, causing a significant reaction in global markets during Friday trading hours.

Ether has not only profited from macroeconomic circumstances this year, but even more so from renewed institutional interest in the network behind the token.

Several companies have started accumulating ether as part of their treasury strategy, including ETHZilla that is backed by billionaire investor Peter Thiel. Some believe that Ethereum will eventually be Wall Street’s favorite blockchain to build on, fueling demand for its native token.

As a result, ether has outperformed bitcoin this year, up about 45% since the start of 2025 while the largest cryptocurrency is up 25%. Some other ether-related tokens, such as Lido (LDO) and Ethena ENA$0.7448, also benefited from ETH’s swift rally.

Public Keys: Ethereum Treasuries Soar, Bitcoin ETFs’ $1 Billion Bleed, Crypto IPO Chatter

by admin August 22, 2025

In brief

  • Crypto stocks surged on Fed Chair Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole speech hinting at September rate cuts, with Ethereum treasury companies and Bitcoin miners leading gains of 8-15%.
  • Bitcoin ETFs bled $1 billion over five consecutive days while Ethereum ETFs rebounded with $288 million in net inflows on Thursday.
  • Blockchain lender Figure Technologies filed for an IPO, seeking to go public after processing over $16 billion in home loans on its Provenance blockchain.

Public Keys is a weekly roundup from Decrypt that tracks the key publicly traded crypto companies.

Wings of a Dove

Crypto stocks (and the rest of the crypto and stock market) are soaring thanks to a big boost from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s dovish speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday morning.

Crypto and stocks tend to get a boost when the Fed lowers rates because it triggers a rotation of funds from treasury bonds and into risk-on assets.

During his remarks, Powell said the “shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance.” In other words, he opened the possibility for a rate cut when the Federal Open Markets Committee meets again in September.

Crypto exchange Coinbase’s shares gained about 6% and Bitcoin hoarding behemoth Strategy rose 5% on the day—a nice reversal from earlier in the week.

But it’s Bitcoin miners and Ethereum treasury companies that won the day. The two largest Ethereum treasuries—former Bitcoin miner BitMine Immersion and online gambling marketer SharpLink—  gained 12% and 15.6%, respectively.

Bitcoin mining rig manufacturer Canaan’s stock gained 12%, and Bitcoin miners Riot Platforms and Iris Energy picked up 7.7% and 9.3%, respectively.

Katalin Tishhauser, head of research at Sygnum Bank, noted that while crypto markets had a “swift and positive” reaction to the news, she flagged that the underpinning economic data still shows signs of trouble.

“Even if a September cut does not materialize, the market has proven resilient in digesting past disappointments while still setting new highs. Momentum may continue, albeit with higher volatility,” she told Decrypt. “Meanwhile, spiralling debt and rising inflation remain unresolved structural issues—factors that strengthen the case for safe-haven assets over the longer term.”

$1 Billion Bleed

Bitcoin ETFs just spent five days in the red and shed $1 billion—even as their Ethereum counterparts staged a turnaround. On Thursday, Ethereum funds stopped the bleed and pulled in $288 million worth of net deposits.

The dominance of Ethereum in the current market narrative is very much warranted, according to the latest note from M31 Capital.

The private equity and venture capital fund pointed out that infrastructure, DeFi, L1 and L2 networks, and Web3 companies were all in the green—and all came out ahead of Bitcoin.

But nothing short of another all-time high for BTC was going to top last week’s record-setting run to $124,128.

Figure on the runway

Just as Bullish makes its $1.15 billion debut, there’s a new crypto company ready to test its wings.

Blockchain lender Figure Technologies has filed  paperwork for an initial public offering.

Now, it’s important to make a distinction about what Figure does given the history of crypto lenders in the space: Figure uses its platform to enable lending outside the traditional scope of the crypto industry, such as real estate.

The company says that its the largest non-bank provider of home equity lines of credit in the U.S. and that its software has been used for more than $16 billion worth of home loans.

Illia Otychenko, the lead analyst at CEX.IO, told Decrypt earlier this week that the company “dominates the tokenized private credit space, with more than 70% market share and over $11 billion in active loans on its Provenance blockchain.”

Figure is co-founded by SoFi co-founder and former CEO Mike Cagney, who left the bank in 2017 amid sexual harassment allegations. The IPO would mark his return to leading a publicly traded company.

“The IPO is one step in a long process to bring blockchain to all aspects of capital markets,” he said in the company’s SEC filing. No word yet on share pricing, though.

Other Keys

Timber: Nasdaq has delisted drug developer Windtree Therapeutics, which announced last month that it would buy $700 million worth of Binance’s BNB token. The company said in an SEC filing that its shares stopped trading on the Nasdaq for failing to maintain the $1-per-share minimum bid price required by the exchange.

USA Made: Bitcoin miner Bitdeer confirmed it’s going to begin manufacturing mining rigs in the U.S. this year. That news came as two of its competitors—Iris Energy and CleanSpark—have been hit with letters from U.S. customs asking for millions in tariffs on Chinese-manufactured rigs purchased in 2024.

Jerome Powell rate-cut hint jolts Ethereum price toward 2021 ATH territory

Jerome Powell rate-cut hint jolts Ethereum price toward 2021 ATH territory

by admin August 22, 2025

A wave of optimism from Jackson Hole swept through digital asset markets, with Ethereum price leading the charge. The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap surged over 14%, bringing its historical $4,891 all-time high firmly into view.

Summary

  • Ethereum surged over 14% to $4,820 after Fed Chair Jerome Powell hinted at potential rate cuts.
  • Trading volume jumped 95% in 24 hours, surpassing Bitcoin’s volume and pushing ETH close to its 2021 all-time high.
  • The move sparked broader crypto market optimism and institutional interest, reflected in ETFs and equity-linked shares.

According to crypto.news data, Ethereum (ETH) surged over 14% on August 22, jumping from a daily low of $4,205 to trade as high as $4,820 as of press time, a mere 1.5% away from its all-time high price of $4,891, set four years ago.

The token’s trading volume jumped 95% in the last 24 hours to top $68.22 billion, dwarfing Bitcoin’s (BTC) $79.86 billion during the same period. The original cryptocurrency gained 4% on Friday to exchange hands at $116,640 at the time of writing.

ETH’s stunning rally alongside a broader crypto market rebound came as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, during his keynote in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, signaled a potential pivot in monetary policy, stating that the current “shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance.”

“This is bullish for the front end of the yield curve and risk assets, where bitcoin is a fast horse in the race. A dovish tilt could supercharge BTC’s narrative as a hedge against fiat uncertainty, accelerating institutional accumulation and liquidity. While the mid and long end of the curve remain uncertain, bitcoin’s sensitivity to macro signals means it’s poised to ride any wave of optimism from rate cut expectations.” Jessy Gilger, investment Advisor at Bitcoin financial services firm Unchained, said.

Fed signals must meet Ethereum fundamentals

According to Marcin Kazmierczak, Co-founder of RedStone, a measured Fed easing cycle could be the final catalyst required for ETH to shatter the $4,800-$5,000 resistance barrier and chart a course toward new all-time highs. However, he cautions that Powell’s deliberately careful tone is a reminder that sustainable growth cannot rely on monetary policy speculation alone.

Kazmierczak argues that any lasting rally must be anchored by continued fundamental adoption, specifically pointing to robust institutional flows via spot ETFs and a resurgence in decentralized finance network activity. These fundamentals, rather than fleeting Fed sentiment, provide the necessary bedrock for a true breakout.

“The convergence of institutional flows, DeFi activity, and potential Fed accommodation creates a compelling setup for ETH to potentially reach the $5,000-$6,000 range that analysts have been targeting for 2025,” Kazmierczak said in a statement obtained by crypto.news.

This bullish technical and fundamental setup has encouraged strikingly optimistic predictions. Arthur Hayes, chief investment officer at Maelstrom, has projected that Ethereum’s momentum could propel it to a staggering $20,000 by the cycle’s end.

In a recent interview on Crypto Banter, Hayes stated, “The chart says it’s going higher, you can’t fight the market. I think [Ethereum] goes to $10,000, $20,000, before the end of the cycle.” This audacious forecast, while speculative, captures the intensely optimistic sentiment building around Ethereum’s potential.

Public markets respond to ETH price surge

The Ethereum price surge euphoria bled into public equity markets, offering a proxy for institutional Ethereum exposure. Companies with significant ether treasuries, which had been battered earlier in the week amid a tech sector sell-off, ripped higher in tandem with the coin’s price. Bitmine Immersion and SharpLink Gaming saw their shares jump 14% and 12%, respectively, according to CNBC data.

Still, the outlook remains layered. Ether-focused ETFs, which snapped a four-day streak of outflows with $287.6 million in inflows on Thursday, remain on pace for their worst week since May. That divergence highlights the tension between short-term speculation and long-term allocation, leaving open the question of how much institutional appetite will continue if the Fed’s policy path stays uncertain.

Trump’s World Liberty Scoops Up $5M in Ethereum at $4,670

by admin August 22, 2025

Ethereum is experiencing a sharp surge as Trump-linked World Liberty Financial makes headlines with new purchases. According to blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain, World Liberty recently spent 5.025 million USDC to acquire 1,076 ETH at $4,670.

Source: X

The project, which is linked to President Trump’s Family, is coming back after selling thousands of ETH at a high loss. Lookonchain reported that a wallet tied to World Liberty sold 5,471 ETH for $8.01 million at $1,465 per token.

This came after the entity had spent nearly $210 million to accumulate 67,498 ETH at an average of $3,259. Consequently, the position is now sitting on a loss of about $125 million.

Coinbase Expands Token Roadmap

The purchase comes just a day after Coinbase added World Liberty Financial USD (USD1), the Trump-backed stablecoin, to its listing roadmap. Coinbase is trying to diversify assets across Ethereum, Base, and Solana networks with this move.

In addition, tokens like QCAD, Dolomite, and SPX6900 have made their way onto the Ethereum review list. AWE Network and Flock are now being considered on Base, while Solayer has been added for Solana.

Eric Trump, who serves as the Vice President of Trump Media Group and is also a co-founder of World Liberty, shared the news about the roadmap on X. He teased that more announcements are on the way, keeping the project in the limelight.

USD1 is officially on @Coinbase!!!

More @worldlibertyfi news to come very soon! https://t.co/GaDxpHAlH3

— Eric Trump (@EricTrump) August 21, 2025

Bitcoin OG Shifts Into Ethereum

Moreover, blockchain trackers flagged unusual activity from a long-dormant Bitcoin whale. The wallet, which received 100,784 BTC seven years ago, turned into 62,914 ETH worth $270 million.

Additionally, it established a 135,265 ETH derivatives long position valued at $580 million. Lookonchain noted that the same entity may control multiple wallets following similar strategies.

Ethereum’s market reaction to these is identifiable. As of writing, ETH trades at $4,765, up 13.07% in the past 24 hours, with volumes exceeding $59 billion.

Ethereum’s rally is getting interest from political projects and Bitcoin whales, one of them being the OG. Coinbase’s roadmap update further fuels the momentum.

Coinbase, Strategy Lead Crypto Stock Rebound as Bitcoin and Ethereum Soar

by admin August 22, 2025

In brief

  • Shares of crypto companies rose in price alongside digital assets and major stock indices.
  • The price surge comes after Federal Reserve Jerome Powell indicated that the central bank could cut rates next month.
  • Bitcoin and Ethereum were also trading higher on Friday, with ETH and altcoins leading the charge.

Crypto-focused company stocks rose Friday alongside digital coins following a more dovish-than-expected speech from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

Nasdaq-listed Coinbase (COIN) spiked and was recently trading more than 6% higher on the day at $319. Meanwhile, Bitcoin treasury and software firm Strategy—MSTR—was up by nearly 65 to $354. Both had been trading down in recent days, but COIN is now in the green over the past week while MSTR remains slightly down during the span.

And Circle, which debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in May in a blockbuster IPO, jumped higher. The stablecoin giant was recently priced 6% higher over the past day, currently at $140, but had shown a 9% leap earlier in the morning.

Elsewhere, leading Bitcoin miners, CleanSpark (CLSK) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) rose by 5% and nearly 9% on the day, respectively, to nearly $10 and above $13.

Crypto treasuries like SharpLink and BitMine Immersion—which focus on buying and holding Ethereum, the second biggest digital coin—both jumped by more than 12%, hitting nearly $20 and $54.

Broadly, stocks are up on the day, with The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing higher by 880 points, or nearly 2%, touching a new high. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 climbed 1.45%, and the Nasdaq rose by 1.6%.

The rise in equities comes as leading cryptocurrencies Bitcoin and Ethereum also jump. Bitcoin was recently priced at $116,318, up 3% in the hour after Jerome Powell spoke, CoinGecko data shows. Ethereum spiked higher by nearly 8% in one hour. The coin was recently trading for $4,740, about $130 away from its all-time high mark from 2021.

Over the past day, Bitcoin and Ethereum were up 3% and nearly 12%, respectively.

An interest rate cut would likely help cryptocurrency and tech stocks. Both assets have typically done well in the past in a low interest rate environment, as traders are more drawn to risk assets.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressuring Powell to cut rates, frequently insulting the Fed chair on Truth Social and even threatening to fire or even sue him.

The Fed started aggressively raising rates in 2022 in an attempt to control 40-year high inflation brought on by COVID-19. The central bank then started cutting borrowing costs again last year as the economy cooled.

Ethereum, Bitcoin Spike After Powell Signals Interest Rate Cut

by admin August 22, 2025

In brief

  • The Federal Reserve has left the interest rate unchanged at its last five meetings.
  • In a speech at an annual gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Powell said that conditions had changed.
  • The Fed meets again in September.

The price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rose on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signaled the possibility of an interest rate cut in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Within 15 minutes of Powell’s speech starting, Bitcoin jumped above $114,700 from $112,000, a nearly 2.5% gain, while Ethereum surged to $4,600 from $4,300, an almost 7% increase, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. Both cryptocurrencies remained down 2.9% and 1.4%, respectively, over the past week.

By the time Powell was done with his remarks, altcoins were soaring. XRP and Solana had both surged more than 6% in less than an hour, with XRP regaining the $3 threshold for the first time since Tuesday. Dogecoin leapt more than 7% for the same time frame. However, most altcoins tracked by CoinGecko were still slightly in the red on the week, a sign of investors’ earlier angst about the Fed’s path forward.

An interest rate cut would likely buoy cryptocurrency and other risk-on assets by boosting liquidity for investment. U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressuring Powell relentlessly to slash rates amid concerns that the economy is slowing.

In a Myriad Linea market, 87% of respondents expect the Fed to change the interest rate, up from closer to 70% earlier this week.

Powell was steadfast in his assessment that the central bank faces elevated inflation risks compared to the labor market, but he said that the central bank is prepared to adjust its policy stance if its dual mandate of full employment and stable prices is in conflict.

Caveating that the central bank is not on any preset course, Powell said “the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance,” indicating that the central bank may lower interest rates at its September meeting.

Still, Powell warned that inflation from Trump’s tariffs has not been fully reflected in economic data, and it could be that way for months.

“It will continue to take more time for tariff increases to work their way through supply chains and distribution networks,” he said. “Come what may, we will not allow a one-time increase in the price level to become an ongoing inflation problem.”

Analysts say that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were falling earlier this week in anticipation of Powell’s eighth and final speech in Jackson Hole as Fed chair. With markets positioned for easing in September, they said “cautiously hawkish” remarks could disappoint investors.

Bitwise Senior Investment Strategist Juan Leon told Decrypt on Thursday that he expected Powell to focus on sticky inflation and tariff uncertainty, while avoiding any pre-commitment to a rate cut in September and potentially pressuring risk-on assets with a firmer tone.

Powell looked back on the COVID-19 pandemic in defending his tenure as Fed chair. The central bank took drastic measures to stabilize markets and stimulate growth as the U.S. economy ground to a halt nearly overnight. And as a red-hot economy roared back from pandemic-related pressures, inflation peaked at a four-decade high of 9.1% in June 2022.
