Charles Hoskinson Issues Epic Response to Latest Coinbase vs. SEC Legal Feud

Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano (ADA), has reacted to the new lawsuit between Coinbase and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In a post on X, Hoskinson expressed sarcasm at the requirement by the regulatory body for crypto entities to register.

For context, former SEC Chair Gary Gensler, while in office, constantly told crypto companies to “Just come in and register.” Gensler insisted that exchanges and crypto projects need to register and comply with securities law.

Hoskinson, referencing a post from Paul Grewal, Coinbase’s Chief Legal Officer, has called out the SEC for not following its own rules. Notably, Grewal alleged that the SEC under Gensler destroyed some internal memos that would have been useful in their legal proceedings.

According to Grewal, Coinbase is seeking expedited discovery and sanctions, as well as the production of any remaining communications that could aid their case.

As per Hoskinson, it is hypocrisy for the SEC to fine crypto firms billions of dollars for not keeping records, yet they violate the same rules. In his words, “I’m sure Gary can come in and register.”

The Cardano founder is sarcastically suggesting that since the regulatory body is violating record-keeping laws, then maybe Gensler should also come to register for accountability.

At the end of July, Paul Grewal had submitted a legal brief challenging the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). This was to counter the FDIC’s move to dismiss Coinbase’s lawsuit, which accused the agency of trying to push crypto firms out of the financial space.

Meanwhile, in Oregon, Coinbase is also arguing that the state has no legal authority to enforce crypto regulations independent of U.S. federal laws.

Coinbase insists all its legal battles are to provide regulatory clarity to the crypto sector.

Solana Hits 7-Month High Price as Bitwise Exec Foresees ‘Epic End-of-Year Run’

Solana is getting hot again—and may be primed for an “epic end-of-year run,” according to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan. 

The sixth-largest crypto asset by market cap is up more than 4% in the last 24 hours to $223, and earlier Wednesday hit $224.95—a mark it hasn’t held since February 1. Solana has risen 25% over the last 30 days, making it the largest gainer among the top 10 assets by market cap.

“For the last 18 months, the recipe for strong returns in crypto has been clear: Take one part exchange traded products (ETP) inflows, add strong corporate treasury purchases, and voilà—you get big returns,” Hougan wrote in his weekly memo. “Solana has the conditions to follow this path.”

“All the ingredients are there for an epic end-of-year run for Solana,” he added.



At least one part of that equation is already underway for Solana. 

Digital asset treasuries centered on Solana have been snatching up SOL all year, with publicly traded firms like Upexi and DeFi Development Corp. having accumulated more than $400 million worth of the asset apiece since the year began. 

An even bigger treasury may be established soon. On Monday, Forward Industries announced a $1.65 billion private investment in public equity (PIPE) raise, with the proceeds planned to build its Solana treasury, enabling it to create the largest publicly traded SOL treasury on the books if it uses just more than 25% of the proceeds. The firm will be led by early Solana investor and Multicoin Capital co-founder, Kyle Samani. 

Solana ETFs might be just around the corner, too. 

Approval decisions are looming from the SEC regarding previously filed spot ETFs from multiple issuers, including Bitwise, Canary Funds, and 21Shares. While approvals are not guaranteed, analysts previously told Decrypt that Solana, XRP, and Dogecoin ETF approvals are “near locks” in 2025. 

While Hougan said that an approved spot ETF and treasury firm accumulation is not a guarantee of success for SOL, the relative size of the asset when compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum means that inflows will have a bigger impact on the price. 

“Scaled for the size of the blockchain, a relatively small amount of flows into Solana could significantly impact prices,” he said. “For instance, Forward Industries’ $1.6 billion purchase of Solana shares would be the equivalent of $33 billion in Bitcoin purchases.”

Predictors on Myriad Markets are coming around on Solana as well, with odds of a new all-time high in 2025 shifting around 23% in favor in the last 2 weeks. Users now give it a 57% chance by the end of the year. (Disclaimer: Myriad is a product of Decrypt’s parent company, DASTAN.)

SOL currently sits around 24% off its January all-time high of $293.31, per CoinGecko.

Epic finally revokes fraudulent V-Buck purchases on Xbox, but a “malfunctioning” refund system only causes more confusion

Epic Games has sped up repercussions for Fortnite players who used V-Bucks and refunded them through an exploit on Xbox, essentially getting the in-game currency for free.

As we moved into the weekend, the studio said it had now “fixed a delay” and would be claiming back any items that were bought through currency that had been refunded on Xbox or previously gifted from fraudulent accounts.

Acknowledging the system it uses to revoke items on Xbox between December 2024 and July 2025 “malfunctioned”, the company warned some players “may now see a message that their payment was reversed or refunded and see recent items have been removed, even from transactions from several months ago”.

It comes after some Xbox players abused an exploit through which they could buy V-Bucks through Microsoft, apply them to their accounts, and then refund them.

After clarifying this “does not affect regular purchases on Xbox or any other platform that weren’t refunded”, the Fortnite Status X/Twitter account added:

“Ordinarily, when a player receives a refund of a real-money Fortnite purchase, the purchased items are removed from their account,” Epic explained. “When V-Bucks are purchased, spent, and refunded, causing the player’s V-Bucks balance to go negative, items most recently purchased and gifted with the refunded V-Bucks are removed from the player’s account and the gift recipient’s account.

“Unfortunately, the system we built for this malfunctioned on Xbox between December 2024 and July 2025. During this time, players were receiving refunds, but the refunded V-Bucks and items purchased with refunded V-Bucks remained in the player’s account and gift recipient accounts.”

While Epic accepts that over this period most players “continued using purchasing and refunding in good faith as usual”, some “exploited the situation to make large numbers of purchases, often with many accounts. Some even set up shops to accept payments from players and gifted them items purchased with refunded V-Bucks”.

It’s taken so long to sort the issue, however, that when Epic began processing back-dated refund requests on Xbox on 4th September and confusing players, it’s now “making a correction to distinguish between accounts that made ordinary refund requests, and accounts exploiting the refund system”.

“We’re restoring the items that were removed earlier this week for players who made less than 7 refunds since Dec 2024. It was our fault that we didn’t update the V-Bucks balance in their account immediately as we should have. This will take a few days,” Epic conceded.

“The removed items will stay removed for anyone who received 7 or more refunds, and for items received through gifting from players who made 7 or more refunds during this time. This is the ordinary approach to refunds from our terms of service, and these item purchases were taking advantage of an exploit with the V-Bucks refund system.”

Epic Games recently claimed the return of Fortnite to iOS in the UK is “uncertain” as it’s been unable to bring the Epic Games Store to iOS this year, “if ever”, after the CMA – the UK’s competition regulator – has “deprioritised store competition entirely”, following the lengthy legal battle between Epic and Apple.

Reddit Erupts After Epic Games Belatedly Claws Back “Fraudulent” Fortnite Purchases

The Fortnite Battle Royale subreddit caught fire Thursday night as many people reported that they were greeted with a pretty upsetting prompt when they logged into Fortnite, with the game telling them they’d had cosmetic items and/or V-Bucks revoked from their accounts. It was an unusual situation because it happened to so many different people at once, and in some cases removed items that the player had for months. When Epic Games finally commented about the situation on Friday morning, it said the revocations were correct and that there was a bug on Xbox specifically that prevented them from making this fix before now.

The situation sparked dozens of Reddit threads on Thursday night and Friday morning before Epic publicly acknowledged what was going on. There are still others in these threads and in the replies to that tweet claiming innocence, or that they lost items and currency that they purchased legitimately on other platforms like PlayStation or PC. So it’s possible that this enforcement sweep has caught more players than it should have.

There are a few different scenarios in which Epic will claw back purchased items or V-Bucks, the most obvious being when a person buys V-Bucks and then refunds the purchase either through their credit card company or the platform holder–items they may have bought with those V-Bucks should be removed when the money is charged back, along with the V-Bucks themselves. Apparently, a bug caused some players to keep those V-Bucks even after they refunded them, and that’s one thing Epic is correcting now.

Other things that folks have reported doing to earn Epic’s ire include buying an account loaded with V-Bucks in order to gift items to their main account, changing their Xbox region to take advantage of lower prices in other parts of the world, and buying V-Bucks cards from grey market sellers. With Epic seemingly taking enforcement action against a lot of different people at once over months of infractions, there are many different explanations involved.

Fortnite’s FOMO-based item shop makes this situation even more awkward, because it may not possible for someone who lost some cosmetics to simply re-purchase them legitimately, since most items only appear in the shop for a few weeks per year.

Epic CEO blames Unreal Engine 5 issues on developers, but more support incoming

Epic CEO Time Sweeney has blamed developers for issues with games made in Unreal Engine 5, stating the “main cause is the order of development”.


A number of games developed with UE5 released recently have had issues with performance, including the likes of Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater (out today!) and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, but ever since the engine’s release there have been games with stuttering and poor frame rates.


Now, speaking to media at the Unreal Fest in South Korea (thanks Clawsomegamer), Sweeney put the onus on developers and the need for better education.


“The main cause is the order of development,” he said. “Many studios build for top-tier hardware first and leave optimisation and low-spec testing for the end. Ideally, optimisation should begin early – before full content build-out. We’re doing two things: strengthening engine support with more automated optimisation across devices, and expanding developer education so ‘optimise early’ becomes standard practice. If needed, our engineers can step in.


“Game complexity is much higher than 10 years ago, so it’s hard to solve purely at the engine level; engine makers and game teams need to collaborate. We’re also bringing Fortnite optimisation learnings into Unreal Engine, so titles run better on low-spec PCs.”


Essentially, developers are too focused on high-end gaming PCs and consoles, meaning those on the lower end are suffering.


That’s all well and good for the biggest developers, but for smaller indies optimisation can be a huge challenge. Arguably, Epic needs to build on those education efforts further to help studios get the most out of the engine.

Put down your trowel, stop smelling the roses, and listen to me for a second. Strange Horticulture, a narrative puzzler about running a plant shop that also happens to be one of the best detective games around, is free to keep on Epic this week.

Originally released in 2022, Strange Horticulture puts players in the role of a plant shop owner newly arrived at the alt-history Lake District town Undermere. Each in-game day, numerous customers will enter your store and ask you for a particular plant, though they can usually only provide a partial description of it. Using a magnifying glass and the world’s weirdest horticultural textbook, you must identify the plants in your shop and match them to the right customers.

Through this simple yet ingenious mechanic, a dark and eerie tale unfolds. Your clientele grow weirder, the plants you discover more esoteric, and the secrets of Undermere slowly begin to reveal themselves. Moreover, by learning about the qualities of each plant, which range from remedial herbs to deadly poisonous mushrooms, you can influence the trajectory of the story for good or ill.

The story behind Strange Horticulture is equally fascinating. Its developers, John and Rob Donkin, spent a decade designing Flash games for sites like Newgrounds before designing their detective masterpiece, inspired by a botanical text called Breverton’s Complete Herbal: A Book of Remarkable Plants and Their Uses.

“We just found this in a library one day and were like, gosh, how good is this?” John Donkin told PC Gamer’s Jody Macgregor. “It’s got all these cool plants and they’ve all got these amazing weird properties and uses. Some for I guess witchy things, others more as medicinal things. It’s just so inspiring. We just thought, well, let’s do that, but make them a bit more magical.”

Strange Horticulture is free until August 28. Now is a great time to play it too. A sequel, Strange Antiquities, is coming in September. It likewise takes place in Undermere, but switches your plant shop for an antique store, while also promising substantially more involved investigation techniques.

Way of the Sword might be a more forgiving kind of samurai epic

Capcom’s Onimusha series has been on a long hiatus. Combining Resident Evil-style rendered backgrounds with more agile characters, adding in demons, magic and a feudal Japan setting, the series span multiple sequels — and consoles — til the fourth entry in 2006.

Roughly two decades (and console eras) later, Capcom has returned to the series, even getting the definitive samurai actor, Tom Cruise Mifune Toshiro, to play the hero, the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. At Gamescom, the company is now demoing an early slice of Way of the Sword, which covers most (but not all) of the game shown at SGF 2025 just a few months ago.

It’s an interesting time to return to the samurai-meets-demonic-threat universe of Onimusha, following a sudden boom in games tapping into feudal Japan. Most recently, the latest Assassin’s Creed was set there, while, Sony’s upcoming Ghost of Yotei (not to mention its predecessor) both tap bushido and swordplay in historical Japan.

While I played through the demo, I made a lot of mental comparisons to Sekiro – a game that’s now several years old and still unbeaten by me. Onimusha draws together similar themes of demon forces run amok, but has a more forgiving approach. Gameplay centers around blocks and parries, plus weak and strong attacks, all while pulling in orbs dropped by dying enemies that act as the game’s currency. (Health orbs are also dropped by certain foes.)

The Oni gauntlet that absorbs these souls can also be used to see invisible demons and unlock areas that are spiritually blocked. It’ll also act like a sort-of demonic movie projector, showing what happened during the demon invasion in the area.

Early enemies were predictably sluggish demon swordsmen and archers, getting me back up to speed with how Onimusha fights play out. Even if it predictably looks lightyears ahead of its predecessors, Way of the Sword doesn’t reinvent how you cut up these demon hordes.

In comparison to other action games, guarding seems very forgiving. You can hold the guard button down, and it’ll block basic projectiles and melee attacks from all directions I spent some time leaning into exhausting stamina gauges, timing parries for one-hit Issen critical attack and batting away arrows back where they came from.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s satisfying and fun, but I’m itching to see how the series will build on what’s pretty basic attack flow. Musashi had acccess to a dual-short sword special attack, Two Celestials, that barrages the enemy with attacks and tops up his health levels.

This suggests more special attacks and magical flourishes should open up later in the game. The preview during SGF 2025 also showed ways to utilize the environment for defensive attacks, holding up wooden boards to block arrows, for instance, although that didn’t trigger during my playthrough.

The highlight of the demo was a confrontation with Musashi’s rival, Ganryu Sasaki. He’s great villain fodder — and has also been somehow gifted his own Oni gauntlet. The duel was the only time I felt under threat during the demo, and even then, I didn’t die once. There’s enough of a health meter to test yourself against Sasaki’s lavish sword attacks and lunges. Once you wear down more powerful enemies, you can make a single, concentrated attack to either glean more orbs from them or hit for heavy-duty damage.

The early taste of Way of the Sword is a fun, easy romp, so I’m curious to see how Capcom evolves the formula of Onimusha — and where the true challenges might lie.

Dante’s epic poem La Divina Commedia is getting turned into a videogame again

Enotria: The Last Song developers Jyamma Games are making a new action-RPG inspired by and named after Dante Alighieri’s 14th century epic poem La Divina Commedia, aka the Divine Comedy.

Like the poem, it sees you descending through the circles of Hell, each the geological manifestation of a particular Sin. Unlike the poem, it features a set of combat classes, a choice of protagonist genders, a narrative alignment system, procedurally generated extraction dungeons, and customisable weapons and armour. As the poet himself might say: in the middle of the journey of our life I came to myself within a dark wood where I had to grind for crafting materials.

The games industry has not been mega gentle with poor old Dante, whose monumental work helped establish the Tuscan language and influenced a brace of English writers, from Blake to Beckett. The best-known video game adaptation is probably still Visceral’s cheeseball 2010 action-adventure Dante’s Inferno, which is often more interested in aping God Of War. A cynical man or snob (hello!) might look at the below, hacky-slashy trailer for Jyamma’s adaptation and consider it to be another act of wanton literary desecration. Terza rima isn’t supposed to be a three-hit combo, you blistering philistines!

Still, this isn’t quite another exercise in crafting boobwalls for the circle of Lust or punching organs out of bodies. Enotria was pretty metaphysical for a Soulslike, building a universe and combat system around the practice of stagecraft, and Jyamma’s take on the La Divina Commedia is similarly dreamy – it turns Dante’s poem into a kind of overarching mythology.

“In this new adventure, the studio presents an epic journey set in a world where The Divine Comedy has supplanted the old faith, bringing about a golden age of righteousness among humanity,” explains a press release. “When dark forces subvert the promises of the poem, order collapses and the world is thrust into chaos. The player will take on the role of a warrior-poet trapped in the infernal depths, called to descend through the circles of Hell, face increasingly powerful demons, and redeem a sinful past.”

Sounds quite involved. Still, I’m not sure where the procgen extraction dungeons fit in, exactly. The idea of mining hell for loot and progression materials is the kind of videogame conceit I’d love to lay before an actual 14th century theologian. I’m sure the humour of the situation would be well worth the inconvenience of being burned at the stake. Anyway, there’s no release date yet for La Divina Commedia. The poem took about 12 years to write – hopefully, Jyamma will turn their version around a little sooner.
