OpenAI’s New Sora App Lets You Deepfake Yourself for Entertainment

by admin October 2, 2025

On Tuesday, OpenAI released an AI video app called Sora. The platform is powered by OpenAI’s latest video generation model, Sora 2, and revolves around a TikTok-like For You page of user-generated clips. This is the first product release from OpenAI that adds AI-generated sounds to videos. For now, it’s available only on iOS and requires an invite code to join.

“You are about to enter a creative world of AI-generated content,” reads an advisory page displayed during the app sign-up process. “Some videos may depict people you recognize, but the actions and events shown are not real.”

OpenAI is betting that creating and sharing AI deepfakes will become a popular form of entertainment. Whether it’s your friends, influencers, or random strangers online, Sora frames generating deepfake videos as a form of scrollable fun. The app’s main feed is an endless serving of bite-size AI slop featuring human faces.

During the set-up process, users are given the option to create a digital likeness of themselves by saying a few numbers aloud and turning their head around as the app records. “The team worked very hard on character consistency,” wrote OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a blog about Sora’s release.

People have the ability to choose who can use their digital likeness in Sora videos. It can be set to everyone or limited to just yourself, those you approve, or mutual connections on the app. Whenever someone generates a video using your likeness, even if it’s just sitting in their drafts, you can see the full clip from your account’s page.

First Impressions

Many of the most-liked videos on my For You feed on Tuesday afternoon featured Altman’s likeness. One AI-generated clip depicted the OpenAI CEO stealing a graphics processing unit from Target. When the character gets caught, a voice that sounds like Altman’s pleads with a security guard to let him keep the GPU so that he can build AI tools.

Many of the videos generated during WIRED’s testing included rough edges and other errors. But Sora makes it incredibly seamless to create personalized deepfakes that often look and sound convincingly real.

To incorporate the likenesses of people in your videos, just tap on their faces on Sora’s generation page and add them as “cameos.” Then, enter a simple prompt, like “fight in the office over a WIRED story.”

UKIE launches Interactive Entertainment Scotland

by admin September 18, 2025

UKIE has launched Interactive Entertainment Scotland (IES), a new, dedicated Scottish body designed to “champion the country’s rapidly growing games sector.”

Announced on September 17, 2025, the IES will serve as the “primary voice” for Scottish game companies, working directly with the Scottish government and local stakeholders to advocate for policies that support the continued growth of the country’s game industry.

As part of UKIE, IES members will benefit from Scotland-specific expertise and access to the body’s full range of services and advocacy efforts.

“Scotland has always been a vital part of the UK’s games success story,” said Nick Poole, CEO of UKIE.

“The launch of Interactive Entertainment Scotland recognises the sector’s maturity and importance north of the border. IES will provide the focused, local representation that Scottish studios deserve while maintaining the collective strength that comes from being part of the UK’s broader games ecosystem.”

IES will focus on supporting business growth, attracting investment to Scotland, and developing talent pipelines through partnerships with universities and colleges.

“The formation of a dedicated trade body to champion and collaborate across Scotland’s globally renowned games sector is both timely and important,” said Scotland’s minister for business and employment, Richard Lochhead.

“As the birthplace of globally significant titles from Lemmings to Grand Theft Auto and home to companies involved in globally significant titles such as Minecraft, the games industry in Scotland has undergone meteoric growth.

“It now comprises of 130 computer game enterprises, compared to just 15 in 2010, while the number of people working in the industry has doubled from 1,045 in 2015 to 2,125 in 2023.

“I look forward to working closely with Interactive Entertainment Scotland to build even further on these remarkable achievements.”

Meta Horizon TV is an entertainment hub for VR headsets

by admin September 18, 2025

After revealing his company’s latest augmented reality and smart glasses at Meta Connect this year, Mark Zuckerberg has introduced a new entertainment hub for its Quest headsets called Horizon TV. Zuckerberg said Meta believes watching video content is going to be a huge category for both virtual reality headsets and glasses in the future. Meta has already teamed up with several major streaming services to provide shows and movies you can enjoy in VR. One of those partners is Disney+, which will give users access to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on their headsets, as well as to content from ESPN and Hulu.

Based on the interface Zuckerberg showed on the event, which had a lineup of streaming apps that will be available on the hub, Meta also teamed up with Prime Video, Spotify, Peacock and Twitch. That will allow you to watch shows, such as The Boys and Fallout on your virtual reality devices. Meta also partnered with Universal Pictures and iconic horror company Blumhouse, so that you can watch horror flicks like M3GAN and The Black Phone on your Quest “with immersive special effects you won’t find anywhere else.”

The Horizon TV hub supports Dolby Atmos for immersive sounds, with Dolby Vision arriving later this year for richer colors and crisper details. For a limited time, you’ll be able to watch an exclusive 3D clip of Avatar: Fire and Ash on Horizon TV, as well, as part of Meta’s partnership with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision.

How AREA15 Is Evolving Immersive Entertainment With Universal Horror Unleashed and More

by admin September 13, 2025

Las Vegas immersive entertainment hub AREA15 is turning five in a big way, celebrating the arrival of its second phase of development on September 17. Zone 2’s main attraction, Universal Horror Unleashed, opened its doors over the summer to attract seasonal tourists, but the rest of the offerings are following suit as the year draws out.

After io9’s invited visit to Universal Horror Unleashed, io9 chatted with Mark Stutzman, AREA15’s chief technology officer, about the new way to experience Vegas through futuristic visions of participatory entertainment. And it all really started with rave culture.

“The original idea was, ‘Let’s use it for festival grounds.’” Stutzman shared, “We decided it was too hot, and we put up a warehouse, and we said, ‘Let’s do festivals in the warehouse.’ And then we said, ‘Well, shoot, why don’t we kind of start creating this immersive destination?’ And that’s where it all started, and Zone One has just been insanely successful for us.”

Meow Wolf, the raconteur of interactive art portals that have sprung up across the country, was only the beginning as Zone One’s first anchor.

“Everyone who’s coming to AREA15 is coming [for] immersive experiences, right? Like, that’s their whole goal. And so obviously on the Zone One side, Meow Wolf is our anchor tenant and they’ve done a great job of continuing to drive traffic,” he said.

Zone One features a buffet of AR and VR games and visual walkthroughs among its neon-powered music, dining, and shopping selections. Stutzman continued, “We have 80 acres here to develop, and Universal is our anchor tenant in Zone Two out of a five-phase project. The entire district will be immersive experiences—it’ll be sports and entertainment; it’ll be great restaurants and all that good stuff. The thing that we’ve been leading into most recently is these kinds of IP-based immersive experiences because you get kind of the brand recognition—the emotional connection—and then we bring not only the experience of building immersive experiences that are engaging.”

Area15 is carving its own tech-forward frontier that’s more attractive to Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z than big E-ticket-esque major IP hubs. Universal Horror Unleashed, like Meow Wolf, leans into AREA15’s fun parallel dimension to the Strip’s casino nostalgia. Meow Wolf’s premise is that it’s a portal to other realms beyond its sci-fi-tinged grocery storefront; you have to look beyond for ways to break through and discover its genre-mashing labyrinths of cosmic and fantasy adventure.

Similarly, Universal’s desert warehouse of horrors acts like a storage facility of the studio’s lore that, because it was placed on AREA15’s dimensional rift-inspired land, brings the monsters to life in their wheelhouse of terrors. Stutzman elaborated, “We built a lot of these experiences and we leaned heavily into AR and VR and all this other cool tech but it’s really tech that should be the enabler. What should be most forward are the performances and the experience and the story and the emotional connectivity to the content, which is why we’re leaning more into the IP now. It just really works well and Universal is a testament to that. I mean, [it owns] some of the strongest IP in horror.”

The alternate universe thread is more for those who seek it out with Easter eggs in zone one that speak to it but the retailers within aren’t necessarily going to crossover with each other; it’s just a delightful nugget of lore that brings a sort of otherworldly, futuristic, multi-dimensional edge to the space.

“We’ll have similar in Three and Four and Five, but we’ll have other cool stuff that we launched, like The John Wick Experience, which is a partnership with Lionsgate, another incredibly strong IP owner. John Wick has been insanely successful, kind of beyond our models,” he said of the Continental Las Vegas. You can’t stay there because, well, things get hairy as soon as you try to check in—since you arrive at the same time as John during one of his tiffs against the high table.

“We love kind of doing over the top and Zone Two is going to be crazy with all the different experiences,” Stutzman said of the ongoing development. It will include an interdimensional creature carousel, a drop ride, and a hollowed-out plane with its own fake universe airline concept. But a big thing for the CTO is that at the heart of the tech there are still artists at work.

“Art has obviously always been a big part of who we are so we really wanted to tie into it and we’ll we’ll actually have art tours. And we don’t want to lean into it in a cheesy way. We want to lean into it in a serious way because it’s quite an impressive collection.”

He also noted that AREA15 seeks to cultivate Las Vegas’ art scene through community art events in addition to festival installations surrounding the outdoor plane areas. “We’ll have lots of musicians under there just entertaining and then we’re also going to throw raves but it’s really going to be an amazing space.”

NetEase has shut down T-Minus Zero Entertainment

by admin September 3, 2025

NetEase has shut down Austin-based studio T-Minus Zero Entertainment.

T-Minus Zero Entertainment studio head and co-founder, Rich Vogel, confirmed the closure to Game Developer just days after Vogel announced the studio’s partnership with NetEase was “coming to an end.”

Vogel announced the end of the studio’s partnership with NetEase on August 26, 2025, in a post from T-Minus Zero Entertainment’s LinkedIn account.

“Every journey has its twists and turns, and ours with NetEase is coming to an end,” Vogel wrote in the post.

“We deeply appreciate NetEase for providing us with both ample runway and support – from helping us find potential investors to giving us the time and budget to develop our game into a fully playable hands-on demo. It has generated a lot of interest.

“However, despite this progress, current market conditions have prevented us from securing the funding we need at this time.”

NetEase launched T-Minus Zero Entertainment in August 2023, revealing that, alongside BioWare Austin co-founder Vogel, the team would include a host of seasoned developers from BioWare and Bethesda, including Mark Tucker, Jeff Dobson, and Scott Malone.

The team’s debut title was set to be a third-person online multiplayer action game based on a new sci-fi IP.

“Our studio’s mission is to create epic, immersive worlds where players from around the globe can play together, forming vibrant and passionate communities,” Vogel said at launch.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in September 2023, a month after T-Minus Zero Entertainment’s launch, Vogel acknowledged the potential challenges of developing an online game in the current landscape.

“We’re doing games-as-a-service and that’s not trivial,” Vogel said. “There’s a lot of money that has to go up front, to get the servers online and get everything structured globally before launch and go to market.

“So that to me is why I didn’t want [go through funding rounds]. The process just leads to demo modes and chasing everything. I want to build a great game. Again, there’s always risk. This is the entertainment industry. This is a journey. We may be successful, we may not. But we learn a lot along the way.”

In the LinkedIn post, Vogel said the studio now recognises that “now may not be the best time to seek funding given today’s climate,” but that the team’s playable demo proves its “potential to develop something fresh and exciting that will resonate with players for years.”

“We take pride in the solid foundation we’ve built together,” he continued.

In a statement to Game Developer, NetEase confirmed it has made the “difficult decision” to shut down the studio.

“This decision was made with careful consideration, as we have been inspired by our partnership with the studio and their bold vision,” NetEase told the publication.

“However, we have had to reassess our business priorities and are now working closely with the studio to provide support and explore next steps.”

GamesIndustry.biz has contacted NetEase for comment on this story.
